MUDDY FUN
![]()
The next day, Little Archu trotted off at lunchtime, looking for her new friend who had saved her the previous day. She felt frustrated as she sucked her lollypop and looked for him in the big playground, up and down on the swings and near the sand box.
She found him at last. He was playing marbles with his friends. Hesitatingly, she stood at a distance, thinking that he might get angry if she came too close, like yesterday.

Very soon however the game broke up. One of the boys- a big fat roly poly one- had cheated. He was frowning, and had brown hair which fell on his face in the form of curls.
"Everyone cheats in games," he said, sulking. "There's nothing new in it. You people would have cheated too, if you had been in my place. I don't like you all."
"But this is not right." Protested Little Manav. "Bcos of you, I lost the game!" he simpered.
The roly poly boy snorted royally. He collected the marbles and ran away. All the boys ran after him shouting. Little Manav too tried to run, but he saw Little Archu who was standing in a corner, her lips green today.
"Hello Little Archu!" he said, flashing his two gaps. "What brought you here?"
"Hello Little Manav!" she said shyly, tugging at the two ends of her hanky which had a little pink dolphin on it. "I've thought of a nickname for you."
"Really?" said Little Manav excitedly. "What??"
"Mannu"
Little Manav's face turned pale. "Its not nice!" he said, annoyed.
Little Archu felt sad. "I thought about it all night." She said gloomily. "It will suit you I think- Little Mannu!"
"My friends will tease me!" he said, horrified. "Little Dharmu will laugh the most."
"Who is Little Dharmu?" asked Little Archu. Little Manav pointed to the roly poly boy who was huffing and puffing after all the running. She made a face. "I don't like him. He cheated you of your marbles. Don't play with him."
"Everyone listens to him cos he has got more marbles, chocolates and stickers." Said Little Manav sadly. Little Archu was touched. "Leave that fatty," she said. "Let's go and play alone in our secret place. I have lollypops today also."
"Okie Dokie!!" said Little Manav. They walked hand in hand behind the mulberry bush. Little Manav started arranging marbles and Little Archu wondered what to do with them. Very soon however, she got an idea. She started making little spheres of the wet soil nearby and placed them next to the marbles.
"Eeeks!!!" squealed Little Manav. "What are you doing?" he asked.
"I am making laddoos like my Aai." Said Little Archu proudly. "We need plates. Go and get bigger leaves."
Poor Little Manav was nonplussed. What would they do with leaves, he thought. Were these the silly girlish games his friends had warned him against? He thought of running away.
"What are you staring at?" said Little Archu, mud on her face now, as she tried to push back her fringe and her two little braids. "Go and get more leaves. After this I'll feed you like my Aai feeds me at home, with her own two hands."
Little Manav thought it was best to run away. He got up and ran, glancing back at Little Archu, who was cooking happily, calling out all her friends to her tea-party. He did not know when he bumped into someone.
Little Shravani!!!
Little Manav looked pensive and scared. She had a frown on her forehead, with a fountain on the top of her head, dressed in similar school uniform. She rolled her eyes. "Where were you Little Manao? I looked a lot for you yesterday. Did you skip school?" she asked.
"I.. actually.. me.." stuttered poor Little Manav. He looked back at Little Archu. She was still making ladoos of mud. I can't go back to my bush! Now where to hide?- he thought.
"Hey Little Shravani!" Little Archu called out. "I and Little Manav are having a party, and all my friends will be coming. Do come along." She said.
Little Shravani got angry. "Little Manao made all these things? He did?" she asked.
Little Manav felt trapped. Oh Bappa!!- two-two silly girls. Now what to do?
"You never played kitchen set with me Little Manao!" said Little Shravani angrily. "Answer me now!!"
"I don't like kitchen set," said Little Manav in a small voice. He tried to run.
"Stop Stop!" shouted Little Shravani, chasing him around the playground. Little Archu stood confused, muddy hands on hip, making her little skirt look even more dirty.
"Hello Little Archu!" said Little Dharmu, bending down to pick Little Manav's marbles.
"Don't!!" shouted Little Archu. "You fatty! Don't take the marbles. I'll hit you if you do!!!"
Little Dharmu found it funny to see a little girl challenging him. He bent down again. "Its Little Manav's fault since he left them here in this manner. Jisko mila uska..!!!"
"Don't do it." Said Little Archu, pushing him away with her little muddy hands, destroying his clean blue uniform.
"You and your silly games!" laughed Little Dharmu, separating the marbles from the ladoos, throwing the latter aside. Little Archu felt angry. With all her might, she pushed him into the mud.
Little Dharmu looked a sorry sight as everyone stood laughing at him. "Momma!!" he wailed. "This is not fair!!!"
"Serves you right!" said Little Piya.
"Hahahaha!!" said Little Niki.
"Interesting!" said Little TB.
"Not fair!" said Little Gauri. "She shouldn't be making ladoos out of mud in the first place!!"
The class bell rang and the children made way to their lines. Little Archu sat and wept (as usual). Her tea party was destroyed.
"Finally got rid of Little Shravani." Said Little Manav, very relieved. He was surprised to see Little Archu crying.
"What happened Little Archu?" he asked. She shove him aside, with her little muddy hands. "Go away! I don't wanna talk!"
"But what happened?"
"See what happened!" she said, indicating the mess. "Little Dharmu tried to steal your marbles. I tried to save but my laddoos are gone now. I made them especially for you. Why weren't you here?"
Little Manav didn't know whether to feel upset or happy. He had saved himself from Little Shravani, but poor Little Archu was crying badly.
He looked around nervously. The lines were slowly making way to their respective classes. Here Little Archu continued sobbing, "Oh Bappa! My laddoos all gone! No Prasad for you today!! Boo hoo hoo!!" she blew her nose in her hanky.
Little Manav felt uncomfortable. "Don't cry Little Archu. If you stop crying, then I will show you something interesting."
Little Archu stopped crying almost immediately. She wiped her tears, looking cute with her muddy face and plump white cheeks. "What?" she asked in a small voice.
"This. Don't tell anybody." Little Manav took out a big matchbox from his pocket which had holes on the sides. Little Archu watched, intrigued.
"This is Kittu." He said, revealing a big caterpillar, eating a leaf. "This is my nice, new friend, and I will take care of it now."
Little Archu gave a little squeal. "You boys are dirty!!" she said horrified, forgetting her own muddy hands and face.
"It doesn't do anything, Little Archu," called out Little Manav. "I am taking it home to care for it, since it seems to have no Aai-Baba."
"Really?" asked Little Archu, feeling sorry for the caterpillar. Both the children stood looking at the little creature, who was munching the green leaves happily.
It was then that Little Archu had a brainwave. "I will be his Aai." She said, jumping up and down happily. "I will feed him and bathe him, like Aai bathes Baby Vaishu at home. We will give him leaves and play with it, and sing it lullabies to sleep. And we will make a proper little house for it. This house is too small. You, go and get a bigger box for it. And more leaves. We will paint the box with my crayons. Oh wow!! This is better than playing doll-doll."
Little Manav was horrified. Why did this girl have to insert her brains into everything? But at least she had stopped crying.
"Later, later." He said, closing the box carefully. "But now, we must return to class. Tomorrow, we will think of what to do with Little Dharmu who destroyed your tea party."
Little Archu nodded happily, and both the muddy children walked back to class. One can well imagine the round of firing they got from the bewildered teacher when they got back.
