Whenever there is inter family marriage, especially in immediate family like cousin marriages there are chances that the babies born won't be healthy. Researchers have proven this scientifically. Even the Parsi community is facing the same problem since they were forbidden by the King to spread Zoroastrianism when they had arrived at India.

Communities in South India do have such practices but that is also pretty rare. In North India we have the gotra system as mentioned...its as ancient as time itself and scientific so getting married in different gotras does not cause the issues I stated above.

Also we have various festivals like Raksha Bandhan and Bhai Dooj where we celebrate the bond between a brother and sister; the brother vows to protect his sister from evil and promises he will be there for her always while the sister prays for his long health. I do not have siblings but I have many cousins and celebrate with them. Thus cousin marriages are unimaginable to us. Whether it is first or third cousin, we feel uncomfortable with the notion.

So scientifically or religiously, it is wrong for us. And we don't look at our cousins with that neutral perspective, they are always 'bhaiya' (brother) or 'behen' (sister). That line's etched.

The movie that you are talking about would be wrong at so many levels, that the parents and the step siblings would both be a couple. This isn't cousin marriage at all so a line is drawn necessarily.

Thank you for joining the discussion @Ashley. 😊

I don't think there's any other society which forbids marriage for those relatives from the 7th grandfather except in north India. Even science say that till the 2nd grandfather there's a posibility to have genetic problems if the relatives get married. But from the 3rd grandfather this possibility becomes very rare.

I agree that the continuas cousin marriage in the same family is affecting the children's health. I hope every couple take a test before they get married to avoid spreeding genetic deseases.😊 I hope Pakistani dramas start showing such problems insteed of their normal saas bahu dramas. 🥱

There are genetic reasons behind some cases of sterility. I saw it in a part of my family. Also my husband's uncle was married to a woman from a family in which many women were childless.

May God bless all the couples with healthy children who are still childless. There are many advantages and disadvantages to marrying a cousin. A woman's life is incomplete without having children🥺

Its not forbidden after a couple of generation but its not adviced either. Its something most of us chose not to do. Like I said we have cultural and religious significance when it comes to siblings and cousins bonds.

I have seen a lot of Pakistani shows focussing on cousins who fall in love and getting married but I watch it with an open mind. Although it would be nice to see other relationships as well, not just cousin marriage.

Can i chip in... May God bless couples with healthy kids, THOSE WHO DESIRE FOR CHILDREN.

Also, a woman's life being complete has nothing to do with a man or a child. This age old notion/social conditioning that has been fed into our minds need to change. Most Women in our subcontinent do not know that whether or not to have a child is a CHOICE, not the mandatory next step that follows wedding. It is okay and quite normal for some women to not feel maternal, not wanting to have kids. With this constant pressure from society to make babies from the night of the wedding needs to stop.

Also as a side note - a mother doesn't have to sacrifice her career, her choices, her freedom, her happiness for her children by default. The over sacrificial, selfless mother image needs to change too, in this day and age.

In fact my late aunt was childless, but she enjoyed her life, as she had less responsibilities. Sadly her husband had a second marriage and had children. He lived in another country with his new family.. but she was a strong woman..never once I found her mouring or crying over her bad luck. She used to consider us , and our children as her own. 😃 I make duas for her till now. May Allah grant her jannat.

I'd love to discuss these points in a new thread. It is a very important topic. Specially nowadays where many girls stay unmarried, or don't want to have children after marriage because they have many other interesting things in their lives.😃

AMEEN SUMMA AMEEN ❤️indeed we belong to ALLAH ,and indeed to him we will return.Your aunt was a great woman. It is not easy for a woman to live in a society without a husband and children. When will you create a new thread? We need a new DOTW thread for further discussion😃

I am hearing that for the first time. All cousin marriages in my family had healthy babies.

I heard adoption is not permitted in Islam
