NiBir SS: Let's Football !
Chapter1
I was impatiently waiting for a bus from past 25 minutes to take me to my college. I had my project presentation today and my scooty had left me disappointed in morning . Having no other option, I was waiting at bus stop near my residence stopping every bus and asking about whether it goes via the route of my college...actually not every bus...because some buses escaped without even paying attention at their dear customer swaying hands up in air.
This was watched by the children waiting for their vehicle and I could hear their intermittent laughter. At last, I diverted my gaze to them. They clamped their hands at their mouth pretending not to laugh but failed eventually. I reached to them with a distraught face "Why are you laughing haan?"
And their erupted another one. I flared my nostrils tight lipped and warned "Ab hase naa to" and swayed my palm to and fro indicating a slap.
"Didi aapki bus" a boy pointed at my back. I hurriedly revolved only to find nothing of that sort and inviting more laughter. These little devils!
I looked at them angrily but couldn't say anything as their school van had reached till then. Thanking God in a hope to get some peace then, I swirled back. In no time I saw another bus approaching me. I again swayed my hands up and down and this time the bus did stop.
The conductor was continuously blabbering "Ashoka nagar paarijatak chouraha Amer garden kyaasideep"
As I found a place name near my college I quickly stepped in.
I gulped not finding a place to sit...forget about sitting there wasn't enough place to stand comfortably.
"Chadho chadho aage badho" the conductor beckoned me while he himself stood at the entrance projecting outwards. I somehow managed to stand just behind him at an elevated level holding a rod.
"Aage badho behenji"the conductor spoke again.
Now do I walk over people or what?
"Jagah kaha hai bhaiya?"I snapped in disgust.
"Arey jagah to ban jaegi ashoka nagar paarijatak chouraha Amer garden kyaasideep kyaasideep" his blabbering started again hanging out of the gate.
I ignored him and didn't budge. After some time ashoka nagar arrived.I looked at my wrist watch and found out that it took just 5 minutes to reach the mentioned place whereas I used to take fifteen minutes via my scooty for the same...so the bus was flying!
I was happy that at least I wouldn't be late but my happiness was short-lived.
"Aaa!" I winced in pain as a very fat lady carrying a child stomped my foot while getting down the bus. Only one lady got down and three people got up the overloaded bus.The bus zoomed on again after stopping momentarily.
"Badhte chalo bhadhte chalo" the conductor kookoed again.
"Aage chalo na!" A lady with a shrill voice roared.
I was going to retort but was cut in by conductor "madam aage jaiye please"
Owing to the 'please' which didn't sounded as it should be I manoeuvred.
I very well knew about pick pockters so I was all attentive. I got pushes and pulls as people swarmed in and out. Inertia played its role as well whenever the bus stopped.
I stood in middle of the bus after half of distance to my college was covered. The bus had just crossed paarijatak chouraha. My mobile buzzed and I didn't want to take it out apprehensive of theft. The constant buzzing of it was irritating me intially but bringing in worst anticipations in mind later. So, I decided to just have a look at it. As I dug my hand in my pocket, I was jolted forwarded out of the blue.
I had closed my eyes involuntarily but I realised instantly that I hadn't fallen down but collided with the person who would have been standing before me. I opened my eyes which met hazel brown orbs. The bus zoomed all of a sudden and I was swayed backwards losing my balance. The boy who stood before me holding the hangers strongly clasped my arm saving me to fall backwards.
Immediately, I took out my hand from my pocket. I indicated him to leave me as I held one of the hangers.
"Pehli baar bus me safar kar rahi ho?" He asked politely.
I nodded because I was really 'suffering'.
"Ticket...ticket...ticket ho gya?" Another conductor questioned us. The boy gave him a fifty Rupee note and said "Ek kyaasideep ka banaana"
"Aur aapka madam ?"
"Mera bhi kyaasideep"
"Behenji aap inhe pacchees rupay de dena...ticket...ticket... aage bolo" the conductor went behind us.
I dug my hand in my pocket again and I got a shock. Where is the money? Oh God! Theft?
I hastily dug my another hand in other pocket. Phew! My mobile was still there.
And I landed on the boy's chest this time due to sudden application of brakes. The boy made me stand properly as I took my hands out.
"Sorry" I blurted out.
"It's okay. Give me the money once we get down" he smiled.
"Thanks" I acknowledged.
"Kyaasideep...kyaasideep wale utaro" conductor shouted.
The boy started for the bus entrance automatically making the way for me. As we got down, he asked "Money?"
Oh no! My money got robbed. How would I pay him now? I took a bus ride first in lifetime and I was regretting it.
"Hello?" He waved his hands in front of my face.
"Erm...can I give it to you tomorrow?"
He gave a confused look.
"Actually my money just got theft" I clarified.
"How much?" He asked dazed.
I sounded reluctant hence he changed his question"You had kept it in your pocket?"
And I still stood silent.
"Err...it's...it's okay. Give me tomorrow"
I nodded and he left.
Next morning I unwillingly had to take the bus so as to return the money. And as expected the bus ride was not comfortable. I immediately started finding the boy once inside bus. I crawled whole way inside the bus manoeuvring looking at people to find a familiar face. I caught a glimpse of a brown jacket. The boy wore same jacket yesterday thus I directed my walk towards him. Finally I reached him after some sorrys as I obliviously stomped on many people on my way.I called him out "Excuse me here's your money"
The guy swiveled and I stood dejected since he wasn't the one I was finding.
"I'm not the conductor" the guy said irked.
"No... I mean sorry... I thought you're someone else"
Soon the conductor reached and I bought ticket. I was extra alert with the money this time. Even after having a bad experience in bus yesterday, I was present in the same bus just to return his money. And what I get to know? That the person for whom all this is endured is missing. He just is no where. Argh! I would murder him. No, I won't...because I am not going to meet him ever...no more annoying bus rides.
I stepped out of bus at my college bus stop.
I felt jittery as I got inside college. It never looked so deserted. Am I so late today? But still how doesn't there's not a single creature? I heard footsteps approaching me and I swirled with my heart beats shot up in fear.
Phew! Kirti!
"Kirti you scared me" I stated
"I?" She laughed
"Yup...aaj college bhoot bangla kyu dikh raha hai? "
"You don't remember? " She asked astonished.
And the reason dawned on my brain. Arey yaar! Sports championship starts today. My face crumpled in utmost irritation.
"Mujhe nahi laga tha ki tu aayegi " she smiled.
I was least interested in sports since childhood and screaming senselessly sitting as audience is not my cup of tea.
"You're absolutely right Kirti" I smiled cheekily and surpassed her.
"Hey Nisha kaha chali" she held my shoulder.
"Ghar " I replied coolly.
"Kya ghar huh? Tu kya college ki shakal dekhne aayi thi?"
"Nahi teri shakal dekhne, dekhli to vapas jaa rahi hu" I chuckled.
She glared at me.
"Kirti yaar you know I don't like sports"
"So why did you come?"
"That's a long story"
"Whatever! Jab aa hi gayi hai to chal na aaj football match hai finals" She expressed her excitement.
"Final? Aaj to start hui na inter college championship" I asked out of confusion.
"Tu naa books me hi ghusi rahe "
"Kirti bata naa "
"Championship to last week se chal rahi hai, aaj aur kal classes suspended hai because finals hai football, basketball aur shotput ke"
"Accha aisa"
"Ha aur football finale me to apna college bhi hai, sab cheer karne gaye hai tu bhi chal na mere saath please"
"Tujhe finale dekhna hai ya ladke?" I smirked.
"Nisha yaar" she hid her smile.
"Aww... seedha seedha bol na Riteish ko dekhna hai" I teased.
"Nishu chal" she dragged me smiling.
"Baap re! Itne saare log" I asked dazed looking at the spectators that hid the football ground.
"Ha ek tu hi hai gadhi" she chortled.
I glared,"89% aaye hai mujhe last sem me aur tu mujhe gadhi keh rahi hai "
"Arey I meant ladko k mamle me gadhi" she giggled.
"Mai chali ghar" I snapped.
"Arey arey sorry ruk na" she pleaded.
"Hmm ab thik hai "I said pompously.
"Chal udhar chalte hai vaha se acche se dikhega" she smiled.
"Okay" I smiled back.
We reached the spot specified by Kirti.
A wave of happiness struck the audience. Whistles and claps could be heard.
"Yay!" Kirti jumped.
"Err...What happened Kirti?"
"Riteish ne kia goal see"
I looked at the players who were patting Riteish's back.
"Oh"
"So the team have equal no. Of goals now and time is up"
"To draw ho gaya match?"
"Nahi Nisha ab to aur maza aayega"
"Kya matlab?"
Not getting any answer I turned my eyes to her and found her blushing. Anticipating the reason, I looked towards the ground. Riteish stood smiling towards Kirti near the fence and went after a while as a teammate called him.
"Ahaa " I nudged Kirti.
"Ae" she giggled.
"Shoot out started" Kirti jumped.
"What! Shoot out!" I exclaimed flabbergasted.
"Where?" I asked shocked.
"There" she pointed her finger towards the football ground.
"Are you mad Kirti? What are you saying? They're playing! "
"Yeah that's what I said"
"Don't lie okay ! You said shootout"
She hit her palm at her head,"Nisha seriously! Shootout means penalty shootout! 5 players of each team will try for goals. Whichever team scores more that will win"
"Oh,Match draw tha isliye? "I asked sheepishly.
"Ha"
"Accha"
The rival team scored four out of five. Then came our college team's chance. Four goals were hit successfully and the last one was left to decide. Though I never cared about games but still I wanted our team to win. I closed my eyes in prayer. Excitement bubbled beneath my skin each passing second.
And there erupted loud cheers and applause. I opened my eyes as Kirti pulled me in a hug overjoyed.
"We won!" She exclaimed breaking the hug.
"Great!"I grinned.
Then I heard the crowd rejoice shouting "Kabir! Kabir! Kabir!"
"Ye kabir kaun hai?" I asked Kirti.
"Usi ne to kia last goal! Dekh vo raha!" Kirti smiled wide.
I turned towards the ground to see many players carrying a guy merrily on their shoulders. And my heart skipped a beat to see the same boy who I was searching in the bus. He laughed as his mates tossed him in air.
Kirti said,"Kabir Riteish ka best friend hai aur na"
She paused for a while then continued "tu muskurate hue use ghoor kyu rahi hai?" She nudged me.
I instantly straightened my lips," Mai? Paagal hai kya? Mujhe to pata bhi nahi tha ki ye humaare college ka banda hai, kabhi dekha hi nahi ise "
"Books k alawa dekhegi to kuch dikhega na"she chortled.
"Kirti!"
"Ha vese classes me aata hi nahi hai lag bhag kyunki practice karta rehta hai football ki"
"Practice k liye gaayab rehta hai?"
"Ha state level player hai na Riteish k saath. Magar ab to national level player banne wala hai"
"Matlab?"
"Matlab Riteish told me that he's selected in national team. Riteish couldn't make it as he was injured that time so he would try next time."
"My God!" I stood dazed.
As our conversation ended we saw our team lift the trophy. We gave a loud applause. Then the crowd dispersed...some like Kirti went in others went out.
Kirti told me she's going to wish Riteish and we happily bid bye.
I looked once at Kabir who seemed on cloud nine clicking selfies with people. I shook my head smiling and spun.
"Kabir do you have any girlfriend? " I heard a female voice and out of curiosity spun again.
"No" he chuckled rubbing his neck.
"Will you be my"the girl was cut off by another,"I like you Kabir"
Third girl spoke "I have been liking you since you joined the college"
I saw Kabir displaying an awkward face and my laughter broke out. All flung their eyes to me but I continued as I couldn't control it.
Kabir smiled and walked to me. I saw the girls behind who seemed to kill me with their eyes. I diverted my eyes to Kabir.
"So?" He smirked.
I composed myself and drew my hand forward.
As he moved his hand forward, I showed him twenty five Rupees
"So here's your money"
His jaw dropped.
I quickly held his dropping hand and shook it smiling "Congratulations "
His lips slowly curved up.
"Thank you Nisha" he acknowledged.
"You know my name?" I enquired in bewilderment.
"89% wali ka naam to yaad reh hi jaata hai " he chuckled.
I shook my head.
He then folded my fingers to my palm securing the money in it.
"Tumhaare paise?" I asked.
"Nisha vo college k peeche chota sa cafe hai na vaha coffee twenty five ki milti hai" he smiled.
"So you're asking me for a coffee with you?"
"Yes miss intelligent" he winked.
"Kabir " and he interrupted stepping back "See you there at 6 bye" and swiveled.
Unconsciously I blushed and he called out my name again standing far.
"Nisha! "
I looked at him who gestured me
extending his thumb and little finger by the ear to indicate "Phone me" and left the place.
Phone him? But what's his number? I contemplated for a while then finding no suitable anwser I sighed. I kept the money back in my purse and the next moment I again took it out cheerfully.
"98765-----" a white chit was there along with the money.
