Part 8
Kabir had been randomly throwing stones into the lake for the past one hour. He had driven off in anger soon after the Talent Search event had begun. He just could not comprehend that his Nisha had to stoop so low just for getting his attention when she could have just plainly said to him that she wanted him back. Why so many lies and such elaborate play acting? Now she had forced even him, his Bade Bhaiyya and Ahaana also to act.
His conscience started pricking him as soon as he thought about how he and Ahaana were also play acting to make her realize her love for him and say NO' to the divorce. His conscience spoke to him, "Why are you reacting so badly? If she lied to get your love, care and attention, you too lied to her to stop this divorce? If you think she stooped too low and is being selfish and self-centered, then what are you? Wouldn't she feel the same way as you are feeling now if she comes to know that all this was a drama to elicit her confession?"
Kabir had no answers to any of these questions asked by his conscience. Just like that he suddenly remembered the words of his mother. Both she and he were reading Shakespeare's Othello together. It had been prescribed as the Supplementary Reader for his first year at college.
She began, "How strange is tragedy, isn't it? True tragedy happens only when a right person is placed in a very wrong situation which they cannot handle. Just imagine if Othello was in the place of Hamlet, and Hamlet was in the place of Othello, there would have been no tragedy in both of these Shakespearian plays.
Hamlet would have thought deeply and realized that his wife or his closest friend could never have committed adultery. If Othello was in Hamlet's place also there would have been no tragedy. He would have acted decisively and killed his father's murderer immediately without pondering over the pros and cons of his action. Neither would he have lost his love Ophelia, his mother Gertrude, nor his own life.
An indecisive person was placed in a situation which called for decisive action, while situation which required a deeply introspective person had a person who acted on the spur of the moment and let his heart overrule his brain. It often happens in our daily life too. We should not judge people or their actions too deeply. They might have been like that due to their past experiences.
You remember that fable of the boy who called wolf. The first two times, he was just testing if his father would really come if the wolf attacked him. The third time when the wolf really came, his father did not come even though the boy kept on screaming WOLF' WOLF' and lost his life. What if the father had not been prejudiced or judgmental the third time also? The boy would not have lost his life. What if the father had trusted wrongly even the third time? Only his trust would have been broken. But this time since he did not listen to his child's cries, he lost him forever!"
Kabir got up hastily. He had got his answer. He said softly to himself, "Thank you Mom for showing me the right path even when you're not here!" Just then he saw Nisha before his eyes. She was walking away from him. He called out to her at the top of his voice but she kept on walking until she just vanished into the thin air.
Something was not at all right. His heart was unconsciously becoming heavier and heavier. It felt as though someone had tied a stone around his neck and he was drowning in the deep waters of the ocean little by little. It felt as if his very breath was being withdrawn from his lungs. He just did not feel like breathing anymore. He looked up at his phone and found six missed calls from Nisha and ten more from Viraj. Now he knew that something very bad had happened to her in his absence. He could feel it in his very bones. But still his heart was still unwilling to acknowledge it. Why had he deserted her like that?
Kabir called back Viraj who just asked him to come to the City Hospital as fast as he could. He had asked, "WHY?" But there was a complete and deadly silence to this question of his from the other end. He then asked, "WHO?" to which he heard his Bade Bhaiyya break down crying and telling him in between his sobs, "Don't ask me anything! You just come here. I can't tell you anything more on phone."
Kabir had instinctively got his answers but he was unwilling to believe them. He rushed at break-neck speed to the City Hospital. He saw everyone, his Viraj Bhai, her cousins, her entire family and even Ahaana there, except her. What did this mean? He went to his Bade Bhaiyya and shook him asking where Nisha was. He just pointed his finger towards the ICU and said, "She's in coma. The doctors have given up all hope. She is not listening to any of us..."
Kabir rushed in without even heeding the words of any of the doctors and nurses. Viraj requested the doctors to leave Kabir and Nisha alone. After all that was the last hope they had. They had anyhow given up all hope and treatment. They could at least allow him to be with her in those last few moments.
All of them were watching through the glass windows as Kabir was doing the craziest things they had ever seen to wake her up. He called up on her phone and answered her call by himself and held it close to her ear as if she was hearing all this. He then told her that they would go to the chaat centre and eat the hottest and spiciest chaat there, so much so that her eyes would start watering. He then told her that they would share a single ice cream together after she woke up.
Yes! Kabir literally felt that she was just sleeping peacefully as he had often seen her nights and nights together during their contract marriage days admiring her sleeping beauty. He sat down on his knees catching hold of his ears and then got up saying "Sorry! ...Sorry!" a hundred times, but she refused to budge. He was getting frustrated and slapped her to wake her up but in vain. The doctor and nurse gave a disturbed look at Kabir and just started removed her oxygen mask, her tubes and wires.
Kabir gave a disbelieving look when he saw the doctor's expression which said that it was all over. How could it be over when he was alive and when his heart was still beating perfectly in his chest? He took her in his arms and started dancing. Nisha's family were about to stop him, but Viraj just pleaded them to let his brother be with her those last few minutes and not snatch even them away from him. He placed her lifeless feet on his feet and held her as carefully as one would hold an infant child in their arms and started gliding around with her. There were countless number of times when he and she had danced with each other to share their joy and happiness.
But today they were dancing one last time to share their togetherness in life and death. His tears were falling on her cheeks. So close they both were! He just could not believe that she was going away from him and that she was DEAD. He was saying, "Wifey, mat jao! Main aagaya! Tum kya kehti thi? Nalayak! Duffer! Dumbo! Idiot! Aur...yes! Gadha! Dekh main kya haal karti hoon tera! Utto na! Ab utkar dekho na kya haal kardiya hai tumne mera! Hamesha kehti hi, Kabir mat jao, aur khud hi jane ki tayyari kar rahi ho? Wifey, tum sabse badi cheater ho! I believed that you'd stand beside me for life, but you deserted me all alone in just a few months?" (Wifey, don't go! See, I've come! What did you often say? Useless! Duffer! Dumbo! Idiot! And ...yes! Donkey! See what I do to you! Get up! Now get up and see what a condition you have left me in! You always used to say to me, Kabir don't go, and now you are yourself trying to go away from me? Wifey, you are the biggest cheater ever! I believed that you'd stand beside me for life, but you deserted me all alone in just a few months?)
At these words, Kabir felt a soft slap on his cheeks and a low voice muttering to him, "Don't you ever dare call Mrs. Nisha Kabir Kumar a cheater. I've never deserted you anytime, nor will I do it! Got it you Nalayak! Duffer! Dumbo! Idiot! Aur...yes! Gadha! I'm not going anywhere! Got it! And don't you dare to marry anyone. You're mine, just mine. Got it! Especially that Ahaana!"
Kabir started smiling between his tears, "How much more silly can you get, Nisha? I was never going to marry Ahaana in the first place. She is your Jethani and my Bhabhi."
Nisha looked shocked, "What?"
He continued, "I too was shocked when I heard it first! Ahaana was already engaged to Vivan at that time. Her marriage was also due in a couple of weeks. But then she told me how she had realized that her first decision to marry Vivan was not correct. Viraj Bhai also told me how he had actually begun liking and loving her a lot but did not confess as he did not know what was in her heart.
So finally I decided that when Miya and Biwi are razi kya karega Kazi' and convinced both of them for a register marriage before there could be any more confusion, entry of villains, or emotional blackmailing by family. You too know how experienced I am in this matter of marriages. One Samuhik Vivah and the other a Contract Marriage turned True Marriage!
Now even Ahaana's parents have forgiven her and accepted her marriage with Bade Bhaiyya. So don't worry about anything! Just get well soon! London is waiting for both of us, my London School of Dance and your London School of Archery and Shooting. Together we have to fulfill both of our dreams. Are you ready?"
Nisha replied by hitting him on the head, "Yes, of course! Nalayak! Duffer! Dumbo! Idiot! Aur...yes! Gadha!"
