Part 8
Days turned to weeks and weeks became months. Like that four months have passed since Avni's accident and she still showed no sign of life.
Neil on the other hand had completely changed. The usual soft-spoken person he was, was now an almost silent person. His daily routine consisted of waking up to Avni, forcefully attending work and coming back to Avni. The Neil who used to groom up well before was lost somewhere and now he was a messy man. He didn't care how he looked. He didn't bother to iron his wrinkled clothes. He almost everyday forgot that he needed food to survive. For him, he was alive by Avni's side. By continuously taking care of Avni, he forgot to take care of himself. But he still hasn't lost hope. The hope of Avni's return. The hope to live a happy life with his wifey and family.
Dayawanti and Ketan along with Diksha were now in Central jail. Dayawanti was jailed for killing both her son and daughter in law and also charges on trying to kill her granddaughter twice, Ketan for being his mother's literal partner in crime and Diksha for the murder of Neela's dad and also for invading government servers. Neil even though forgot to live life, he knew his responsibilities towards Avni and he fulfilled them with utmost determination.
With his hard work, he was able to prove all of them as criminals. He had faith that Avni would wake up and he didn't want her to meddle with the revenge game again. He didn't want to let her do anything that would take her away from him, again. Anyway, he considered it his own battle more than her's since the fateful day of her accident.
It was another usual day in Neil's life. Neil was asleep when the nurse on duty came to administer necessary injections to Avni. He slowly woke up at the sound of a rattling trolley.
N: Why didn't you wake me up?
The nurse was about to inject her when he spoke. She smiled and handed the injection to Neil and said "It has been four months and since then you never fail to do our job. You don't let us do anything." That was true. Injections were something he used to be the most scared of. But, he overcame his fear for his wife because he thought the nurses were too fast and careless, it would hurt Avni, and there was no way he would let her in pain.
Neil who finished the work handed it over to the nurse and smiled faintly but didn't say anything. The nurse walked away with the rattling trolley after checking the machines.
Neil looked at Avni. She looked so weak. He felt weak himself. He was tired of seeing her like this but never tired of taking care of her. Never tired of waiting for her. He caressed her hair which was neatly done. by him. Yes! He even learnt how to braid hair just for Avni. There was no way he would let anyone else take care of Avni. He fears even the smallest of things can cost him her life.
Slowly he closed his eyes and let out a sigh of relief. After several minutes of staying in the same posture, his tuneful voice filled the room.
Hey kaash, kaash yun hota
Har shaam saath tu hota
Chhup chaap dil na yun rotaa
Har shaam saath tu hota
He opened his eyes and stared at Avni. Tears sparkling in his eyes. "What did you think Avni, I cannot sing huh? bolo?" He continued in a low voice.
Guzaara ho tere bin guzaara ab muskil hai lagta
Nazaara ho tera hi nazaara ab har din hai lagta
He gently touched her cheeks.
Haal-e-dil tujhko sunaata
Dil agar yeh bol paata
Bakhuda tujhko hai chaahta jaan
He stopped for a few minutes before continuining the song, his pain evident in each line.
Tere sang jo pal bitaata
Waqt se main woh maang laata
Yaad karke muskuraata haan As he sang those lines, he remembered all those times they shared together. Their pillow fights, coffee fights and even the hug. Basically, everything flashed in front of his eyes.
Tu meri raah ka sitaara
Tere bina hoon main awaara
Jab bhi tanhai ne sataaya
Tujhko besaakhta pukaara He wasn't just singing. He was venting his heart out. He was telling her how he felt, how much void was there in his life without her. Neil Khanna anticipated the day his wifey would come and change him back to the person who he was. The real Neil khanna. Khwaabon ka kab tak loon sahara
Ab toh tu aa bhi jaa khudara
Meri yeh dono paagal aankhein
Har pal maange tera nazaara
Samjaun inko kis tarah
Inpe mera bas nahin chalta
It was as if the song was written on Neil's life. As if someone understood his pain. As if someone understood his heart. Listening to him sing those lines would melt anyone's heart. Neil took her hand in his and held on to it for several minutes and wiped his eyes afterwards. Before making his way out of the room, he placed a kiss on her forehead as usual.
Neela was watching from outside the whole time. She heard him sing as well. Tears unknowingly strolled down her cheeks. She was touched by his hurt voice and by the painful yet beautiful lyrics. Most of all she was touched by the fact that there was someone who unconditionally loves and cares for her daughter.
Neil stumbled onto Neela at the door. He smiled at her faintly but didn't bother to speak. It wasn't because he didn't want to. He just couldn't. Neela also understood him just like a friend. No wonder they were a happening Mother-in-law&Son-in-law duo. Before. The charm was lost somewhere right now and that saddens both of them. However Neela has full faith that her daughter will wake up and colour everyone's dull life. She would set everything right, but when?
Neil had to attend work today. He was assigned an important case from the headquarters. He was still the honest cop he was. Loyal and composed even if his life was scattered. It was just that sometimes his mental self diverts to a faraway land even if he was physically present.
"I am coming!" Neil said as soon as he received the call. Leaving in the middle of an important meeting with the head officers, he dashed out in to the parking lot and headed straight to his one and only destination. His heart raced and his breathing rate was beyond the count. As soon as his car came to a screeching halt in front of the hospital he zoomed inside forcing his legs to quickly take him to the ICU. When he reached, Neela was seated outside, her eyes wide and wet. The very second, Neil feared the next moments of his life.
