PART 7
The police station was filled with different kinds of people. Drunk men were being pushed into lock-ups and several other criminals guilty of various crimes irrespective of their sizes were already in for the punishment. Constable officers were rushing here and there.
Dayawanti strolled through the crowd and made her way to the lock up area. She asked the warden to let her meet the two people who got arrested so and so and he easily agreed. Dayawanti was all ready to bribe him but he was too easy for her. She ignored that thinking he was intimidated by THE Dayawanti Mehta which was her second mistake today. As they say criminals do leave one or two loopholes behind.
The area where the two men were kept was dark but the silhouettes of people were visible and away from the hullaballoo of the main hall of the station.
"Tum dono! Kaan kholke sunlo. Agar kisiko bhi, khaas karke IPS officer Neil Khanna ko kuch bhi bata diya toh mujhse bura koi nahi hoga. Tum dono maro hi maroge. Aur saath mein tere biwi bacche bhi marenge."
Dayawanti wasted no time to force them to keep their mouth shut from giving out any evidence against her.
"Wah Madam Wah. Aap galati kare aur hum akele sazaa bukhte? Aise nahi chalega. Hum ne toh faisla karr liya. Hum sab kuch sach sach Police waalon ko bataa denge." One of the two men spoke up. Dayawanti heated up though she cooled herself down as she realized the place and time she was in right now.
"Yeh lo!" She threw a bag full of money at them. "Jitna chaahe utna lelo. Poore 1 lac hai issme. Mere paas itna hi hai abhi. Moo band rakne ke keemath hai yeh." Both the men exchanged glance before breaking into fits of laughter.
"Madam, agar aapke paas hume dhene ke liye acchi kaasi rakam nahi hai toh phir aise waise kaam kyun karaate ho? Insaan ko okaath mein rehena chahiye madam" They continued their laughter.
Dayawanti's anger reached a limit and now she was no less than a fuming chemical in a science laboratory. She tried hard not to yell as this might alert the warden and other officers outside.
"Okaath toh mein tum sab ko yaad dilaungi . Tum logo ko.. Uss ladki ko. Voh Avni meri zindagi ka ek kaata hai jisse nikaal ke phekdhena chahiye. Kher, mein jaa rahi hoon. Bool karr bhi kisiko yeh math kehena ki usska accident maine karvaai hai. Varna anjaam accha nahi hoga."
"Kis anjaam ki baat karrahi ho daadiji? Neil's voice came from just behind Dayawanti and she was shocked. Neil smiled at her immediately and she let
out a sigh of relief.
"Mein yahaa in logon ko sabak sikaane aayi thi Neil. Tumne mujhe daadi kahaa toh meri bhi kuch farz banti hai ki nahi?" Dayawanti faked a smile and was about touch Neil's cheeks when he turned facing away from her.
"Aapka farz? MERI BIWI KO MAARNA AAPKA FARZ HAI?" The smile on her face faded away as soon as it appeard. Neil's anger filled voice echoed in the dim lighted corridor.
"Aap ko kya laga? Sirf aap hi shaathir ho? huh Mrs. Dayawanti mehta, moo kholne se pehele ek baar jagah aur log, dono ko acche se dhek lena chahiye. I am very disappointed with you daadiji. Yeh ummeedh nahi thi mujhe aapse."
Neil's sarcasm left Dayawanti speechless. She was puzzled and trying to absorb everything that was unfolding infront of her right now.
Her gaze fell on to Ketan whos hands were cuffed. DD pushed him inside the lock up before locking the door.
"Ketan! Kya hai yeh sab? Ho kya raha hai yahaa!" She shouted.
"Mein bata tha hoon na daadi oops... Mrs.Dayawanti Mehta. Itni bhi kya jaldi hai?" Neil walked around Dayawanti slightly playing with his phone in circles. He snapped his phone close to her face making her scream a low but loud voice.
"Neil, beta yeh drama khatam karo. Inn logon ko toh mein jaanti tak nahi. Inn ko inn ki sazaa dho." Dayawanti didn't realize what she was saying and what she was not. Ketan tried signalling her about Neil's exposure to the truth but she cut him off everytime ordering him not to open his useless mouth.
"Sahi kaha daadi. Aap inn ko nahi jaante. Aaiye mein introduce karvaa dheta hoon. Yeh hai Constable Param aur yeh hai Constable Suresh. Aur yeh hai Mrs. Dayawanti Mehta, humaara shikaar." Dayawanti took a few steps back shaking her head in a denial. Ketan tried to talk but she cut him off again.
"Chup! Ek dum chup. Kuch math bol ketan. Varna tera ghala ghot dhungi."
Neil who was witnessing all this drama between the mother-son dua spoke up again astonishing Dayawanti with another epic line of him.
"Ahh ahh ahh Mrs.Mehta, Control! Aap ghussa kyun ho rahi hai? Ghalati toh aapne kee hai." Dayawanti knew that she was badly trapped this time. It was true. She shouldn't have trusted anyone. Without involving Ketan, she should have personally gone to meet the goons. If she had, she would have recognized them. But no! That's another loop hole she missed to bury. Destiny was tired of helping her now that it turned totally against her.
Dayawanti was about to deny all the facts when one of the constables who had dressed up as the goons handed over a phone to Neil. It had everything recorded. The whole conversation without fail. "Here's your evidence sir. You have got smart brains." Saying this they moved out from the lock up area along with DD.
Neil was alone with Dayawanti infront of him and Ketan locked up inside.
Dayawanti was furious. She didn't know how to react. She couldn't believe her game was over. Neil double crossed her and over-smarted her. Anger was a small word for what was raging inside her. A few days back something Ketan said echoed in her ears. "Aapke plans itne chote kabse ho gaye maa?" She eyed Ketan as if she would burn him with her eyes. Some lady constables came and pushed Dayawanti into another lock up with much diffculty. She was a hard nut to crack unless the nutcracker was someone as intelligent as Neil.
Before storming out of the corridor, Neil stopped infront of her on the other side of the steel bars. "Abhi yeh khatam nahi hua Mrs.Mehta. Intezaar karna. Avni ka."
He left the two wounded prey behind instructing DD to especially look upon them.
His car headed straight to the hospital where a beautiful soul was waiting for him. His eyes moistened when he remembered the happenings of last night.
Ali was alone when Neil reached the ICU entrance. He was texting Neela who he sent home after several pleadings and nagging about the same thing over and over again. "No improvement." Those words had started to become too familiar to them that they question the very existence of such a word.
Neil asked Ali to go home and he didn't refuse this time. He understood Neil's condition as he himself felt terrible. He patted Neil's shoulder and took one glance at Avni through the small glass pane before heading out of the hospital
Slowly, Neil opened the door and slipped inside the intensive care unit. The emotions that he had suppressed started to pour out seeing his beloved wifey breathing with the help of a life supporting system. The girl who once had the most radiating smiles of all had no will to even fake a smile right now. That ached his heart. Still he mustered up courage to go and sit beside her.
"Wifey, I just got you the best gift you ever wanted. Want to know? Then wake up! It's my birthday today. If your husband orders you for a birthday gift, it's the wife's ultimate religion to obey him and gift him what he wants. I am not making it up, it's written in the scriptures okay?" Tears welled up in his eyes. He held her hand ever so gently and planted a kiss.
"I don't even know if you can hear me or not, but I'll never stop bugging you until you open your eyes and call my name."
