Rahman's tune sets world record as most downloaded: Airtel

Indore, Oct. 13 (PTI): The signature tune composed by noted musician A R Rehman for Airtel has been acquired from the Internet by over 80 lakh persons so far and would soon be notified as a world record as the most downloaded jingle by cell-phone users.

"The tune has been downloaded by over 80 lakh persons so far. This is a record in the world as no other tune was downloaded by cellphone users in such a large number," Airtel's Chief Operating Officer (COO) Sunil Goyal told reporters here today on the occasion of the launch of 'festive handset bundle offer' targeted at rural customers.

For the festive offer Airtel has tied up with Motorola and LG for handsets, he said.

Under the offer, by paying just Rs 1,499 customers would get a handset, an Airtel sim card worth Rs 100, talktime worth Rs 1,499 and incoming facility of one year worth at least Rs 1,800, he said, adding that effectively a customer by paying Rs 1,499 would get benefits of more than Rs 4,898.

Referring to the company's sales performance, Goyal said the company was selling more than 72,000 connections per month for the past two months and hoped the figure would double during the festive season.

Airtel, at present has 8.25 lakh subscribers in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh Circle.

Vasundhara Das about ARR

Your playback career really took off with your very first song Shakalaka Baby with Rahman, and since then you have had many hits to your credit, with films like Kal ho Na Ho, Main Hoon Na, Salaam Namaste. You have also collaborated with Rahman and the 150 member music group fro Miami University. How has it been working with him?

I think Rahman is not just a great musician, he is also a great technician. He is one of the big reasons that the music industry in India has risen above itself. He has raised the bar quite high. He is born with the soul of a great musician. That is something you cannot buy or learn. It is from within. He was also generous enough to let me bring my own influences on the table, whether they were Latin, Arab or whatever and that made me feel that the song I sang was truly my own.

Global Rhythms is amazing. These are students from different ethnic groups and they sang all of Rahman's songs without looking at any paper and with such joy. To get 150 people on stage together who don't know the language and sing his songs in Tamil and Hindi was quite something.

A file photo of Rahman receiving an award
RAHMANIACS, which is what A R Rahman fans call themselves across the world wide web are absolutely clicked by the fact that his new soundtrack is being released today. If you view the Guru trailer on http://www.guru-themovie.com/, you would be too. This combination has doggedly delivered hits — Mani Ratnam and A R Rahman — one master gave the other his lease to filmdom. But then you know the story of how the composer roused Ratnam's curiosity after his jingle for a famous coffee brand down south caught on and went onto to make a big bang debut with the film Roja.
The music of Guru (whatever little we've heard of it), sounds very inspired. Here Rahman discusses his soundtrack for the Abhishek-Aishwarya starrer and his 9th project with Ratnam.
Stills from the yet-to-be-released Guru
You've known Mani Ratnam for over a decade now. Is it easier to reach a common point creatively now?
It's never easy. The more we work together, the more difficult it is to find a common point. But we keep trying to rekindle a different area every time.

Do you have more creative independence because you're A R Rahman?
You're working as a team. So I can't say this is what I want and fit it in the film. All of us would like to work towards a product that appeals the most.

What's the toughest score that you've done with Mani Ratnam till date?
Thiruda Thiruda.

Tell us about Guru music.
It has seven tracks. I worked on it for about 11 months. There's some Gujarati influence (the film's makers recently admitted it's based on the life of Dhirubhai Ambani). I've sung some songs too.

You were very reluctant to sing earlier, but you've been singing more often now. So do enjoy singing?
I'm reluctant now too. Mostly, I get suggestions from the director. It's also a question of being careful as a singer. For me, Maa Tujhe Salaam was the biggest challenge as a singer and the song got accepted. More recently, singing in English was a bigger challenge – the anti-poverty anthem for UN 'Pray for Me Brother' should release in a few months, and I'll know how people take it.

Who do you think your voice suits best?
Me (laughs). It's mostly the director who decides these things.

Could you tell us a little about filmmakers you've worked with?
Everyone obviously has a different approach to music.
The best thing is that all of them understand music. There's no rule that they should like a certain type of music. The way I work is that I give them a couple of ideas – sometimes it's bang on and sometimes they come back and I give them 10 or 20 other options. For instance, Ashutosh knows the basics and is all for maintaining tradition in today's world. I too want to compose classical music in my films' soundtracks, so it works well for both of us.
And taking Rang De Basanti as an example, I only had the groove of Paathshala on the phone and told Rakesh to hear it out and started building the song. It's a process of creativity.
I don't compose a song with the thought that I have to please a certain filmmaker.

How was it working with Gulzar?
It never feels like work. You never feel strained with him. It's like some mushaira session is on.

How did the Bappi Lahiri song in Guru turn out?
He's sung Bolo Guru, the bhang song. Initially we thought that Abhishek Bachchan should sing it. Later, I had heard Bappida in Dubai and told Mani Ratnam that he's an amazing singer, so we decided on him. Bappida came down and finished it in a day.

Is it like Rang Barse from Silsila?
I haven't heard Rang Barse, so I don't know.

Have you introduced any new singers in this soundtrack?
Ya, there's a Toronto-based singer caller Mariam Taller who's sung a track called Mayya Mayya. There's an Arabic feel to her voice. She had also done background vocals for Rang De Basanti.

What's your favourite track from Guru?
Tere Bina. You have to listen to it. I don't want to give away too much now.

Guru's soundtrack is typical Rahman

In this reviewer's humble opinion, there is a fine line between having your own sound and being repetitive.

A R Rahman is one of the few music directors in Bollywood -- or for that matter anywhere -- who can tread that line with 'lan.

And the soundtrack of Guru -- Mani Ratnam's upcoming film which features a Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Madhavan, Mithun Chakraborty and Mallika Sherawat -- has A R Rahman written all over it in all caps.

As you listen through the soundtrack, you get the feeling that some songs you don't like too much might grow on you. And you also get the feeling that once you see the film, you might want to revisit the soundtrack.

Guru is generating buzz for a number of reasons. It is rumoured to be inspired by the villager to tycoon story of Dhirubhai Ambani. And the movie sees Rahman reunite with Ratnam, a duo that has given us memorable soundtracks like Roja.

The album of Guru kicks off with Barso Re, a peppy rain song sung by Shreya Ghosal and Uday Mazumdar. It is sparse, Rahman style, and injected with intelligent loops and percussion staccatos. But it does not tug at your heart-strings.

Which cannot be said about Tere Bina. This is Rahman at what he does best: ballads. The heart-warming song also bears testimony to the fact that the composer has evolved from a shy singer to a confident vocalist, never mind that his voice is not what most experts will go ga ga over. Tere Bina -- marked as a tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan -- is one of the two best songs of Guru.

Next up is Ek Lo Ek Muft, a bhang number sung by none other than Bappi Lahiri. His accent almost disguised, Bappida seems to be enjoying the song, which sounds like a tribal chant at times. So-so, is the verdict.

Then comes Ms Sherawat's belly dance moment. Mayya, with its sensual sibilance and speaker-phone vocals, is very Middle Eastern. The singer's accent is a bit of a put off but I don't think anyone will be bothering about her accent with Ms Sherawat's accentuated curves hugging the screen.

Track number five is Ay Hairathe, sung nicely by Hariharan and Alka Yagnik. The smooth transition from what is almost a ghazal to a Scottish highland interlude and back demonstrates the composer's ease with both Western and Eastern music.

Up next is the techno-beat-meets-Udit Narayan's-voice offering called Baazi Laga. A tad pedestrian, but you never know with the right moves on screen.

The finale is the goose-flesh moment, undoubtedly the best song of the seven-number soundtrack, Jaage Hain. The orchestra rises and the strings swell to conjure up visions of a great beyond. A song full of cinematic promise.

The bottom line: If you want an album to play at a party, give Guru a miss. If you want to ponder over life's deeper questions and listen to music that tugs at your heart, buy it just for Tere Bina and Jaage Hain.

Rediff Rating:

Welcome back Doly!

Nice review.😊
