Rehman?s Ten Best Songs

If almost all songs are favorites it?s difficult to choose the very best or most favorites. I have tried to explore Rehman?s songs which are very good and remain with a lesser attention by the most of people. Let?s see how many after reading this review go and get these songs and then comment on this review.

1. ?Mil Hi Gae? from the movie KABHI NA KABHI sung by Alka & Kumar Sanu. I think this was the first and last time Rehman works with Kumar Sanu. But the work done is excellent. It?s a master

piece why it is not so popular I could not understand from the very start I like this particular song and the song is having such melody that it comes from a heart and strikes the other?s heart straight away. (Year?1997)

2. ?Nazroon Kay Milnae Say? from the movie ?Vishwvidhata? Classical piece of softness and humbleness in the tune and the soothing music to accompany with makes this song to rule the hearts of people for end life. I know many of people have not listened the song but I assure you that it is one of the best songs of my life it is really a sweetest melody ever created plus very good lyrics by Mehboob. (Year?1997)

3. ?Tararum pum Tararumpum? from the movie DOLI SAJAKE RAKHNA sung by Babul. The is truly very good and and the orchestration makes the song joyful and unforgettable. Above all the picturization in the movie is great. The song is different and very techno trans music in it. Rehman?s arrangements for this song are commendable. (Year?1998)

4. ?Nahin Samne Tu? from TAAL sung by Hariharan. The slow number and it is also one of the best works of Rehman. The ingredients for a slow track are followed and the ting of experimentation produced this song. It?s really very well composed song. (Year?1999)

5. ?Khamosh Raat? from the movie THAKSHAK sung by Roop Kumar Rathod. When ever I write any review about Rehman I always include this song. A song for your natural mood and it is so beautiful and extraordinary that I just love this song. The use of guitar is superb and a memorable song.(Year-2000)

6. ?Kho Gae Hain Sau Gae hain Dil ke Afsanay? from the movie ZUBEIDAA and sung by none other that Lata gi. The song is touching and the treatment it got, takes you to the heavens. The song has chorus in such a manner that they actually tend you toward the reality of Life & Death. 4 years after this song is on-air today I do like the song. Although the song is in sad mood but it is really soulful. It makes you believe that what music can do to your mood. Exclusive. (Year?2001)

7. ?Chalo Chalin Mitwa? from the movie NAYAK. Now what I say the flute used in the song is out of the world. Only Rehman has the quality to produce this kind of composition. Udit and Kavita sung the song and they have done an excellent work here. I am sure that you will also like this song. Finally in the movie it was picturized so well that you will stick to it. (Year?2001)

8. ?Mitwa? from the movie LAGAAN sung by Alka & Udit. This is the song which makes sure that there is no match for Rehman when it comes to soft and Melodious numbers. The contents of the song are simple amazing again flute work is superb with the alaaps in the middle of the song are excellent. Its really one of the best songs from Rehman. (Year?2001)

9. ?Saathiya? from the movie SAATHIYA dung by Sonu Nigam. The lyrics are not impressive but you take the music and you will be stunned. The very good tune for this song and it?s a excellent style with which nothing much remaining for the singer to do when you have tune like this and the grand orchestra inculcate the power of music. Finally Sonu done a well job in singing part and the song became another gem. (Year?2002)

10. ?Hum Hain Is pal Yahan? from the movie KISNA. No need to tell about this song but I would say that its one of the best song of Rehman featuring with some excellent orchestra work and singers. From this song Rehman reminds people that he is still here and he is the legend. (Year?2004-05)

There is still a long list but it is impossible to put that list here. I notify here that the Themes like BOMBAY Theme from BOMBAY, O! HUMDUM SUNIYO RE from SAATHIYA & KISNA Themes from KISNA are not included but they are master pieces.

A R Rahman is a Music Messiah. A living legend. I feel that there are not enough words in vocabulary that can give total justice to his work. Although there are many songs of Rahman that will be always there on my life's soundtrack, I will try to list my most favorite 11 (I couldn't eliminate any song out of this list and ended up with 11!) songs in random order.

> Please note that this list is totally my personal choice. I am not trying to 'judge' any of these songs; all choices are made out of my personal experience

with these songs.

- O Paalanhare [Lagaan]: I usually wake up at 6:00 am in the morning and often start my day with this soulful & divine song. Lata has sung this song wonderfully. I also loved the way Udit starts the line Jo suno, to kahen.. (roughly translates as I will ask you if you are willing to listen , this particular tune comes from Lagaan theme music). A masterpiece.

- E Ajnabi [Dil Se..]: A pining, heart-melting melody. When I listen to the violin interlude (after the first stanza), I can feel the music diluting in my heart, my mind... there is so much pain and yearning in this song that if often leaves me whimpering. Hats off to Rahman's music and Udit's singing.

- Vellai Pookal [Kannathil Muthamittal]: Even though I don't understand Tamil, this is one of my favorite songs of all time. Music needs no language; in fact Music itself is a language. Soothing sound of guitar and wonderful rendition by Rahman. I tried to understand the lyrics with some help from my Tamil friend, and it sounds like Vairamuthu did a great job here.

- Chale Chalo [Lagaan]: Whenever I feel down, whenever I feel like I need some boost, I listen to this song. This song is like an endless source of energy. Every time, after listening to this song, I feel as if some of the energy has been transferred into myself. The song was also picturized very well onscreen.

- Bombay Theme [Bombay]: Flute and violin. When listening to this tune, I feel like meditating, I feel like I am in the clouds, flying like a bird. Such a calming and relaxing melody. This song is like a treasure to me. Thanks Rahman, for giving us this (and many more) treasure!

- Chhaiya Chhaiya [Dil Se..]: A perfect balance between mass and class, between hindustani and sufi music, between art and masala. Sukhvinder rocks in this song. Superb lyrics by Gulzar. Taveez bana ke pehnu use aayat ki tarha mil jaaye kaheen ...( Come to me as a sign from God, and I will wear you as a locket )

- Dheeme Dheeme [1947 Earth]: This is my favourite song for humming! The pace of this song is so smooth that it grows on mind like some kind of Nasha . Great singing by Hariharan. Great lyrics by Javed Akhtar.

- Kismat Se [Pukar]: A very nice duet sung by Sonu Nigam and Anuradha Paudwal. It begins with a low note and then goes on a very high pitch in the mukhda /interludes. I particularly like this song because of the twists in the tune/tempo - especially the way they sing Teqdeeron ko.. and the way song reaches to Hosh mein chaahat ab aayee... ( Now my love has come to realization )

- Naina Milaike [Saathiya]: This is a Bihari style song. Three ladies sing a song about their lover, asking them to stay away from dishonesty - in an innocent coaxing metaphorical way. This song is kinda naughty and very cute. I specially liked the line Dil ki kachaharee..., dil ki kachaharee mukadama chalay hain…

- Piya Haji Ali [Fiza]: I can feel the utter zeal/passion for the Supreme Being in this song. The song has a haunting effect on me. Kadar Ghulam
Mustafa , Murtaza Ghulam Mustafa , Srinivas & Rahman himself have superbly sung this sufi song. I think this song doesn't have a universal effect, though. You have to like sufi style songs in order to like this song.

- Roja Janeman [Roja]: How can this list be complete without one song from Roja, huh? One of Rahman's best work ever. I don't think any other song starts with such a promising note. The harmony - sung by Mahalakshmi and accompanied by a heavy bass guitar - is simply awesome. Both Hariharan and SP versions are great, but I prefer the later.

Every time I listen to these (and many more) songs of mastero Rahman, I salute this man,, not literally, but you know what I mean!

Best of Both Worlds: A.R. Rahman on His Global Projects

By LISA TSERING
India-West Staff Reporter

A.R. Rahman may be considered India's leading "fusion" artist - he's equally adept working in Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu and English films, and he's composed the scores for two major stage musicals, "Bombay Dreams," which had three separate productions - and "Lord of the Rings," which opened in Toronto this March and will open in London in September of 2007. The 39-year-old composer feels his future lies not in fusion, but in the respectful compartmentalization of separate styles.

Upcoming projects include a video set to Rahman's "Pray for me, brother," a song he wrote and sung for the UN's Millennium Campaign: Voices Against Poverty. "We have to push our governments to do what they have to do for us," he says in a promotional video for the campaign. But there are no immediate plans for a U.S. tour. "The tour we'd planned to have is not going to happen. There are so many films we have to finish."

Excerpts from a recent freewheeling interview in Los Angeles follow:

Q: You've been trained in Western music and Indian. In your mind, is it a challenge to switch back and forth?

A: In the beginning, when I did compositions such as "Roja," I spent a huge amount of time trying to focus on one genre. People used to complain, 'Go to Rahman and he's going to take ages to do your music.' But all those things used to help me create a style. Ten years later, some of those songs are considered "textbook" songs today, which people want me to go back to over and over. "Bombay Dreams" was a huge shift again. I can't say that I'm comfortable yet, but I do have a little bit of focus and now I can compartmentalize it.

'Yahan Ke Hum Sikander'

By Taran Adarsh, November 9, 2006 - 08:42 IST

With FOOL AND FINAL slated for release on 26th January, 2007, choreographer-director Ahmed Khan has started work on his next venture. A sports-based theme, the film is titled YAHAN KE HUM SIKANDER and will star a galaxy of stars. Isn't it the same film that Ahmed was planning to start after LAKEER [it was titled MAZHAB then]? "That's true," Ahmed confirms, "But we've changed the title and also altered the script slightly. Also, MAZHAB was based on football, while YAHAN KE HUM SIKANDER might either be football or basketball."

Backed by Adlabs and produced by Silent Noise Productions, YAHAN KE HUM SIKANDER will star Nana Patekar [as the coach], Suniel Shetty, Arjun Rampal, Aftab Shivdasani, Sohail Khan and one more actor [under finalization]. Wait, the cast also includes Rimi Sen, Ayesha Takia and one more name [also undecided], besides a host of topnotch models/actors -- Shawar Ali, Zulfi Sayed, Jas Arora and Chetan Hansraj.

Ahmed describes YAHAN KE HUM SIKANDER as an emotional film, despite its sports-based theme. "It has several poignant moments," he says. Ironically, Anees Bazmee, who is associated with comedy films [NO ENTRY, WELCOME], is writing its script, while A.R. Rahman is composing the music.
