As for characters, that's how I had seen them. And that's how I projected them.

Yeah, I also like the first part. It encompasses all emotions becos I never saw it more than a single all-embodied part.

I just loved reading this part.....

He knelt down on the floor, on the side she was facing, his eyes searching for hers, which were now closed, carefully guarded by her eyelashes, resting on her cheeks. Not believing his luck, he traced his finger lightly across her right cheek, almost expecting her to flinch. Tears welled up in his eyes as he felt the warmth seeping through her skin. It was as if his prayer had been answered.

Three days later

It was early dawn, Kranti could make out. She could hear the birds twittering and also feel the cool breeze blowing in the room. Nirmal Didi must have kept the window open. She had recognized her sister while flitting in and out of her consciousness. But there was someone else too! She tried hard to think but her head hurt. Not only her head, her entire body hurt, especially her left shoulder. She tried to fight the drowsiness but it was of no avail. She slipped into a fatigued sleep as Rajbir stepped inside the room.

He tiptoed towards her bed, not wanting to wake her up. It was a strange dichotomy because all that his heart really wanted was for her to be awake. Raj sat down on the chair nearby and looked intently. She was in deep slumber. He noticed that the quilt covering her was thrown away sideways and realized that she had regained consciousness in between. He gently covered her with the quilt again, taking care not to touch her bandaged shoulder. She had regained some color but was still pale, too pale for his liking. Nirmal and he had been taking turns since the past three days to stay with Kranti in the room, keeping a watch on her constantly.

Sanjay had brought the Doctor again to the house for checkup a night before, and the Doctor was pleased with Kranti's recovery. The wound was fast healing though he cautioned that she would take some more time to heal, since she was too weak due to excessive loss of blood.

A slight breeze blew inside the room and unknowing to him, Raj dozed off, the tension of the past few days taking its toll on him finally.

…

The tunnel was dark as she made her way towards its rear end. She could hear the voices of her co-patriots at a distance. A few more steps and there they were – all huddled together. She knew it was something important. They were happy to see her and welcomed her to the meeting. They were in deep conversation when they heard a gunshot. Before they could react, there were more gunshots and she was slumping down on the ground. The last thing she remembered was Rahim Chacha shoving her away behind the barrels as she fell unconscious. A piercing pain ripped her through her left shoulder; she was dying … there were more gunshots all around her …

'Rajbir!' she screamed.

He jumped up from the chair and rushed to her. She was thrashing around, sweating profusely. He realized that it was a nightmare; he held her right hand firmly, giving her the support that she craved for.

He looked towards the door as Nirmal entered.

'What happened Jijaji?' she asked. 'I heard her scream.'

Raj shook his head.

'I think it's a nightmare. Don't worry. I got her.'

Nirmal glanced at the intertwined fingers and left the room. She needed to wake Sanjay up.

……

Kranti slowly opened her eyes, they seemed heavy. She did not want to sleep any more, but she couldn't keep her eyes open, it seemed. She tried to move her hand, but she couldn't. Looking down, she saw her hand entwined with someone else's. Slowly, she turned her head towards her right side. She nearly swooned when she found Raj sitting beside her, holding her hand.

Certain events of the past few days rushed through her mind – the meeting with the krantikaaris, the sudden attack by the police, her getting hit by a bullet … followed by darkness.

As she stared at her husband, Kranti realized that he was the person that she had been unknowingly seeking for all along. She guessed that it was he who had carried her out of that tunnel and brought her back to safety. And all along she had been so wrong to think that he would never come back for her after he left for Lahore, promising her that he would return in a week or so. She had waited patiently for him for over a month but when he did not return, she had nursed her broken heart and tried to make herself useful to her country. She had believed that she would never see him again.

She closed her eyes, fearing that it was all a dream, fearing that he would fade away like an apparition.

Seeing the myriad of emotions flit across her face, Raj huddled closer and cradled her palm in his two hands.

'Kranti it's me' he whispered. 'I did come back.'

As she opened her eyes again, almost disbelieving the voice she heard, the flood of tears brimmed over.

Raj gently wiped the tears away with his free hand, and then bent down and kissed her forehead. Kranti closed her eyes, letting the feeling of being loved soak into her soul.

So kranti does call for Raj in the tunnel.....................
