PART IV

Sanjay and Nirmal's residence

Around 11.10 p.m.

It was a new moon night, Raj noticed. Standing in front of the window of the room, overlooking the verandah, he noticed that it was dark all around, the only light coming from a scatter of houses located at a distance. He could hear the sound of horses neighing as a cart or two trundled around, carrying passengers. But nothing registered in his mind. All his thoughts were concentrated on one person in the world right then, who was lying injured in the next room.

It was nearly two hours that he had arrived at Sanjay and Nirmal's peaceful abode with his injured wife. The two hours seemed like years as Sanjay searched for a reliable Doctor, who would not hobnob with the Britishers. Finally, Kranti's deteriorating situation forced Sanjay to lie to an aged Doctor, who agreed to visit their house only when Sanjay mentioned that his cousin had been suddenly hit by a bullet while passing through an area known to be the stronghold of the freedom fighters. It was an unfortunate accident. But the family was afraid to report the incident to the Police as they feared that they would unnecessarily be dragged into the mud.

He had been sitting beside Kranti on the bed, still holding her hand, when Sanjay arrived with the Doctor. Nirmal had then gently coaxed him out of the room, assuring him that she would be with Kranti throughout. A reluctant Rajbir had left the room and had come and stood in front of the window about forty minutes ago. He was still standing there when Sanjay came upto him, a cup of tea in his hand.

'Raj' he said softly 'you need to relax. Drink this, it will help you.'

Raj shook his head, refusing the cup.

'No Sanjay, I can't drink anything right now. I need to know first that Kranti is alright. That she will be fine.'

Sanjay kept the cup on the table and looked ahead. Clapping Raj's shoulder, he said

'Of course Raj, she will be fine.'

Shaking his head in disbelief, Raj sat down on the chair nearby. Running his fingers through his hair, he nearly whispered

'Sanjay, I will never forget the sight all my life. Kranti lying injured in that tunnel, bleeding profusely. At that goddamn moment, a realization struck me. That I had to keep her alive, not for her sake, but for my own selfish motives. I realized that I couldn't live without her. All the days of bickering and driving each other insane were like a haze – they had no shape, no sound, no meaning. Though we were away from each other for so long, yet it's like an unknown bind that we share. I have always known deep inside my heart that she is there for me, maybe not with me, but definitely with me. So the idea of her being away ... '

Getting up from his seat, Raj started pacing frantically,

'I can't let her get away from me Sanjay. I haven't given her anything at all. Even our marriage was a sham. We got married to get even with each other. Look where it has brought us. I couldn't even protect my wife.'

Overcome with anger, Raj violently hit the wall with his fist. Sanjay was startled, but before he could say anything, the door to the bedroom opened and the Doctor stepped out, followed by Nirmal. He was directing certain necessities to her. Hearing an impatient sigh from across the room, he looked across and his eyes rested on Raj. He walked towards him and said

'Young man, your wife's out of danger for time being. So no need to fret. But she needs good care.'

'Of course Doctor' Nirmal chimed in. 'We will take good care of Sanjay's cousin.'

His gaze still fixed on Raj's face, the Doctor continued

'But you are mighty lucky Son. A few inches south and the bullet wouldn't have left anything for me to do.'

Rajbir shuddered visibly, taking in the meaning of the Doctor's words. He, however, managed to mumble a feeble 'Thank You' to the Doctor, before trying to make his way towards the room. Only to be stopped by the Doctor.

'Son, I know you are impatient. But I think you still need to change your blood-soiled dress, I don't want anything dirty near her, don't want the wound to be septic, you see.'

Raj turned towards the Doctor with incredulity. With twinkling eyes, the Doctor further said

'She's precious. I hope you know what I mean.'

And that, he was gone, being gently escorted out by Sanjay towards his car.

A quarter of an hour later, Rajbir entered the room. Freshly bathed and dressed in Sanjay's clothes, which were a bit too snug for him, his hair still wet and tousled, Raj made a beeline towards Kranti, who was now sleeping peacefully under the influence of medicines. Pain and fatigue was clearly marked on her face.

He knelt down on the floor, on the side she was facing, his eyes searching for hers, which were now closed, carefully guarded by her eyelashes, resting on her cheeks. Not believing his luck, he traced his finger lightly across her right cheek, almost expecting her to flinch. Tears welled up in his eyes as he felt the warmth seeping through her skin. It was as if his prayer had been answered.

Sanjay and Nirmal stood near the doorway, taking in the scene in front of them. After a few brief minutes, Sanjay pulled Nirmal away. It was like intruding on someone's personal moment.

aww very nice but will comment in detail when am a bit less overwhelmed.......with emotion .. how i miss my raj...and ofcourse kranti too as there is no raj without kranti and viceversa...
