Diala & swathi, you both are logical. But, I'm confused for the below reasons as I pondered more.
1. Kavacha/Varma are the words used for Karna's armour in MB. Both of these words mean something that covers a whole body/a divine amulet which is to be tied at wrist or waist/an invisible protection made up of Mantras. out of 3 only first one seems to be applicable for Karna. Even in English also armour is NOT something which covers only chest/trunk (though it is not always like that). Generally it is understood as covering whole body and even a helmet is one its many parts.
2. There is a specific word used for the piece of armor consisting of breastplate and backplate fastened together, leaving the four limbs free, which in Sanskrit is known as Urashchada (CUIRASS). Now that word is never used in Mahabharata (I've never came across is more correct) for Karna's armour. If Karna's armour was only a chest piece, it is impossible that the Vyasa who never uses a word without a purpose, did not use Urashchada at all (not even at a single instance)! So Karna's armour must have protected his whole body. That makes a little sense because Karna's armour was born with his body, made of Amrita not made with any metal as it appear to be...
3. There are two narrations of this incident and both differ from each other. In the one being narrated by Karna, he blames Indra for trying to kill him for the sake of his own son. (how inappropriate is that considering Karna's character). In the Shanti Parva version, Karna speaks no such things. And there the worm (Alarka) is some demon with a story of another curse, not Indra. Both narrations are different & inconsistent. So it is possible that the 'curse' part of the story is a later addition.
4. I've checked 3 Sanskrit dictionaries to know what exactly an Alarka is - it is either a dog infected with rabies or a hog-like animal with eight legs.😲 There it is not described as a worm. I hardly can believe a rabies dog attacked Karna. The hog-like animal having eight legs doesn't seem to be a small one. So how come Karna did not see such an animal, when he was awaken? Isn't it like he was not sleeping there?
5. And the cursing words of Parashurama itself seems contradictory- Unto the cheerless and trembling Karna, prostrated with joined hands upon earth, that foremost one of Bhrigu's race, smiling though filled with wrath, answered, 'Since thou hast, from avarice of weapons, behaved here with falsehood, therefore, O wretch, this Brahma weapon shalt not dwell in thy remembrance since thou art not a Brahmana, truly this Brahma weapon shall not, up to the time of thy death, dwell in thee when thou shalt be engaged with a warrior equal to thyself! Go hence, this is no place for a person of such false behaviour as thou! On earth, no Kshatriya will be thy equal in battle.' Thus addressed by Rama, Karna came away, having duty taken his leave.. Here Rama tells him he will forget it before his death, but specifies the time- when he fights with a warrior equal to him. And then he tells there exists no Kshatriya equal to Karna in battle! Aren't these both contradictory?😆 What did Veda Vyasa think about Arjuna? That he was nowhere a Kshatriya or he was not as stronger as Karna?😆 But Arjuna clearly was a Kshatriya. And as per the definition of P.Rama's curse, no Kshatriya equals Karna! Then how could Karna have forgetten Brahmastra?😆

I know I'm having the infection of confusions.😆 But can someone give me the link to other narration of Karna's curse, said by Karna himself. I wanna dissect that too.🤣

I think Karna's Kavacha was surely not something like an armour of other men. The word Kavacha simply means 'a protective covering' which is not always necessarily be something like a conventional armour. Being born with his body itself, this Kavacha might have been something that was flexible, skin like and grown over his skin only. Why can't it be an extra protein layer over his skin? Animals do have many kinds of protein layers- transparent, protective, shining, flexible, skin like etc. And today we can add, mix and delete genes from a DNA, create an elephant which shines in nights! (Possible, I'm not joking) Why wouldn't Karna have had something like that? Our hairs are also proteins and a single hair is many times stronger than a steel wire of same dimensions! Since it was natural, it is also possible that Karna's kavacha was absent around his external orifices. There are so many things in our body that are not equally present everywhere! I know I sound too much 'logical'...🤣 Let me stop before you people plan to send me some mental asylum.😆

OH!! Jamy only one person can clear ur doubt ..he is Karna😆 so by ur theory the place (thigh ) where the insect bite him was something like transparent..or thin..flimsy..

After reading Jamy's post I too tend to give it a thought. The question Dhivya asked was if not cursed how did he forget his Brahmastra. But in the version I have read it is said that Karna did fire the Brahmastra which made Arjun faint and then he again tried to lift the wheel. So the curse dint seem to work.Is there anything like that in KMG or CE?

@Bold: Hey Bhagwan Jamy 😲 protein layers, hair, gene, DNA and MB 😳.. you have a natural endowment when it comes this ..

Now., I am thinking the ⭐️version of graphic Kavacha offers an excellent answer to ur doubts 😳 It was no conventional armour.. It was always inside him and appears only when he is at peril..

And., if u had watched closely., the Kavacha only appeared when Karna knew he was in danger., or more appropriately when he wanted it to appear and he stretched open his arms .. So., it didnot appear when the bug bit him., bcos he dint want it to appear., it would have disturbd Rama's sleep..

I'm guessing one of CV's would have thought along these lines and thus solved the mystery with modern version of Kavacha 😎
