😆 Same here. Krishna is my favorite character of mb and love to see him in any form.. A hero or villain. I enjoy both.
MB characters are not linear and hence invoke different reactions in different people based on their past experience as well as beliefs, values. This I think is the greatest strength of MB.

Ramayana for that matter does not hold my interest. Rama was considered the perfect model avatar, an obedient child, brave warrior, charismatic leader, ideal master, upholder of dharma, a just king who gives great sacrifices.. After a while, I had to reach for ENO as too much goodness leads to indigestion. We have a perfect wife, perfect Daasyabhakti by hanuman, a perfect brotherhood..

A garden is not appealing when it is tidy, orderly, uniform with all fallen twigs carefully removed but when it is allowed to grow wild with varied landscapes. This is where the appeal of MB lies. Nothing perfect. Even Krishna, who is considered a poornavatar is a grey character.
Arjuna is no perfect friend nor surrenders completely to krishna, fiery rebellion drau is a far cry from model sita. These characters look real, resemble our day today commoners and yet are far above them... This aspect allures me.

Anu, I have heard great deal of MT but unfortunately do not understand malayalam. I will check the movie and see if it has subtitles. You pointed out very interesting perspective on mt which you have closely felt while reading his work first hand.

I just finished Krishna the God Who Lived as Man. It has a nice lyrical quality to it, but unfortunately can also be easily termed chick lit😆. How is that for sexist?😆

I have also been reading Aryavarta Chronicles lately which makes for uncomfortable reading, if you are the religious type.

What amazes me about MB is how easily non-conventional actions and relationships are explained away. Society must have been a lot more accepting in those times, if we are to go by some of the stories. Wish we would learn something from those 'ancients'

n b4 any of u jump on me i pray u question urselves..y wd famous ppl like karna bheeshma vidhur remain silent if draupadi was really disrobed?y do d versions vary at places or lack in consistency when talking abt d VH?sum places say d dress slipped sum say pulled sum says disrobed if krishna was realy a real char nt a figment of imagination then y in d 1st place wd he nt cum at that very instant when dushshasan even gt hold of draupadi?if krishna provided cloths to draupadi really so d ppl saw miracle infront their eyes..wdnt they hv understood its divine doing?hw cd even then drona bheesma vidhur nt speak out or reanounce thr services to d royal court?who gv yudhisthir right to bet on his bros n d common wife as if they were his property to gamble away?if 4 d sake of winning d war a supposedly truthful yudhisthir cd lie that ashathama is dead then cdnt he hv lied at other times too?a lie told willingly n knowing d facts is more sinful than a lie told at d blurt of d moment isnt it?so if a man to serve his purpose disarm a man by his well planned lie then cnt we ask hw much wd u really bliv in yudhisthir in real life?also d fact that pandavas were never pandus son..bt gods blessings..so hw can their right to d throne arise?even technically pandu ws given d throne as dhriti was blind bt d moment dhriti had son sdnt d legacy of d throne b returned to his blood line?sdnt duri b d legal n only automatic successor to d throne?evn if my pt is over ruled here then duri dnt gt d throne bt neither sd hv yudi as karna was d eldest son..what if kunti didnt remain a silent mute bt revealed all that karna ws d eldest n say karna inherited d throne then what?what if karna handed over d kingship to duri of his own will wd yudi still cd hv gt d throne?isnt their a possibility that arjun being married to subhodra gave an advantage to d pandavas as krishna bcums relative to arjun n 2 protect his sister's interest he being clever n hving foresightednes made better efficient war strategies ?plz cast aside d divine angle n think it as a battle of strategies n then u might b able to get what i mean to say..if kauravas were wiped out..pandavas won..cdnt they hv told historians to rewrite stories glorifying thr tales n struggles?we know when new ministers come they write down their own glorifying achievements so cdnt yudhisthir on bcuming d king ordered that d real records of kauravas b destroyed n manipulate a new story justifying their own actions alone..that they were d righteous one n d kauravas wrong doers?
ya d question may arise then y wd they glorify bheesma karna etc if they were rewriting fabricated facts..bt may b bcoz they had to show that they won against epic soldiers of d stature of karna bheesma drona so that they cd say look we defeated d gr8 warriors so they sang few praises for them too?also d fact that not one writer wrote down mahabharat bt there were many proves that they were building a myth nt recording down facts..
mahabharat fascinates me bcoz like a coin u can see 4m either side of d coin as head or tail..hw u c it is upto u to decide..whether u continue to bliv it like our elders bliv blindly or whether u question d conflicts n scrutinize d details n delve into d logic is upto d individual..all i bliv is a war against adharma cannot make u follow adharma too..then hw do u differentiate ?if kauravas were adharmis n they used tricks to win means krishna n pandavas wd follow d same?an eye 4 an eye policy?that itself is adharma..no evil can b won by equal plotting n cunningnes..i am nt convinced..i see thru mahabharat greedy weak ppl who tries to justify thr actions..tell me some thing if u dont bliv in god n dont pray bt u never sinned or wronged can god punish u?n what wd b ur crime?that u didnt bow down to god?bt arents gods above fury jealousy love lust etc?who is a god?one who dont show any human like qualitys of weakness...bt krishna showed partiality he gave gyan to all y didnt he just walk to kunti n give her d gyan to speak d truth b4 karnas death?y didnt he go n tell kunti to confess yudi ws d=nt d heir to d throne bt karna is n sd b if kauravas r 2 b denied then making karna king might hv solved d issue?duri loved karna..may b he wdnt hv resisted karna as much as he wd hv resisted yudi?so many innocent lives of common men cd hv been saved then..isnt it?also tell me y draupadi rejected karna ?can krishna if he was god advice draupadi to reject karna on basis of caste?can god indulge in casteism?all r equal for him isnt it?n arjun too kept talking of cast..bt duri is d only person who showed he didnt bliv in casteism by making karna a king of a small place..y?sum may say bcoz enemys enemy is frnd..bt even then duri showed he dnt bliv in caste system bt abilitys..much that i hate n condemn duri 4 VH bt still i respect him 4 showing that he honoured quality of a person above caste..

now u can pounce on me 😆..bt i hv no intentions to hurt any1 i just wish nt to gulp down a story handed down thru generations..i want to reanalyze n hunt tit bit facts n understand human reactions..this post is nt with intentions to maligh or hurt any1 bt to enlighten myself as a person..😊

Ur post is very logical dear... Kudos for penning it down so well.
U r ryt Mahabharata is actually looking at both sides of the coin... Kinda gamble... Kinda toss... Either head or tail... Both of them justified in their own way... It was a gamble indeed the game of dice which actually took away everything from pandavas. It was a game that made them lose themselves.

Coming to ur next point that didn't pandavas took the way of adharma to establish dharma???
Quite tricky... Well answer is quite easy... Pandavas were humans kauravas were humans... Imagine urself in the shoes of pandavas... If someone ridiculed u for no fault of urs what would u do??? Not once but time and again...what would u do??? Seek justice... Go to the court... Ryt??? But at that time there was no better judge than the king... N here the king was blind his obsession for the throne was unimaginable...hence for the good of his sons he took refuge under adharma... Pandavas always sought their rights which were denied... Since the court was rajyasabha and judge himself blind in his obsession there was no fair decision... The only way they could adopt was war... N not to forget this crucial step came when their wife was disrobed and insulted... This holds true even today... Not to forget the Delhi gangrape nirbhaya... The protest that took place at janpath pleading the govt to do something... Well was this adharma then???? You would say no cz this is something that the whole nation saw with naked eyes. All I want to say through this is we haven't witnessed the reality through our own eyes... So v r certainly unsure about the intensity of the situation... Pandavas waged a war to establish dharma... What else could they have done??? Cz the court n the judge were busy saving their pride...
Now the last one if krishna was god why didn't he stop all this??? Well let's not forget though he was an incarnation of lord Vishnu he was in the Human form... Yes he could foresee the future... Maybe this was bound to happen... This was meant to be a lesson for all... It was a trailer of what would happen in kaliyug... N yeah its not wrong v r seeing this everything- sibling rivalry, gender bias, property disputes, rapes, blind politics, power games...

Now u can throw me if u want to 😆

Wonderful thread dear...
There r many things that y Mahabharata continues to fascinate even today...
Its more of human nature behaviour emotions n complexities...
Its more of the mistakes committed by all even lord krishna...
That might be- satyavati ki mahatvakanksha, bheeshma pratigya, kunti ka putra tyag, gandhari ka ajeevan andhatva ka pran, dhritrashtra ka moha, shakuni ka pratishod, drupad ka panchali k liye bhavishya ki iccha, kunti ka daan baatne ka aadesh, yudhistir ka khel me sabko daanv par lagana n the list is endless...

N one more reason that y I love mahabharata is cz it gave us the holy bhagwadgita...
I haven't read it yet but yes it has answers to all the problems of a human which the world cannot tell him... It definitely gives peace to human mind...
I ges that's the beauty if kurukshetra war invoked fear helplessness, darkness, unrighteousness then bhagwadgita made peace, showed right direction and enlightened the minds.
