Why Mahabharat continues to fascinate

I believe the core story must have happened. The story is too complex and the characters too nuanced for it to be otherwise. I thought I would share some of my thoughts on why it holds me and invite you to share yours.

This epic fascinates me so much that since I have been able to read, I have found nothing at all to surpass it. Is it the larger than life heroes? Mostly Arjun, the handsome archer. The strong Bheem? Is it the feminist in me longing to take a swing yes, at Dusshasan but mostly at Yudhishtir? Is it confusion I feel about the role of Krishna in this? Why was he there? What were his motivations? Is my fascination to do with Panchali, born in a time when women were not even seen let alone heard? She stood stripped in a sabha full of men and dared to question society and its traditions? I do wonder if the fact that it was told to Arjun and Subhadra's grandson, colored the narrative; after all Parikshit would have been the patron for the brahmins who told him the story. I wonder if these people knew their words would be told and retold to generation after generation. Duryodhan's 'suyi ke ...' line and Yudhishtirs 'Ashwatthama (the elephant)' line. More than 5000 years after their death these people hold my imagination. I went through many interpretations to make some sense of some of their actions.

I look at a map of Aryavarta and see a fascinating change set in motion by the royals. It is civilizational change at a rapid pace, set on paper for future generations. I see the loss of knowledge that happened with the big war. The nobles died out and took their culture and education with them. Its my belief that who we call the Nagas were actually royals of the snake banner. I see Kishkinda as a kingdom of the monkey banner. Was the loss of awareness in the society after Kurukshetra so total that the sub-continent plunged into intellectual darkness about even these minute things?

Fellow IFers, please share what fascinates you most about the epic, outside of the divine aspects of it

Or feel free to dismiss this as a post made by a half-asleep person engaging in useless conjecture😆

Mahabharat does stand out as the most complex narrative ever! Every character here has a story of its own to recite and a situtation of its own making to present. The complexities of each character is so fabricated that it makes you question every move they took. Talk about Paanchali- a fire born maiden who was vocal about her rights and dared to openly reject men who didn't trod her expectation line. Think of Karna who rebelled against the set norms of those times!!

Think of Yudisthir who salvaged himself for the path of Dharma...all of it seems a bit far fetched but then stands on a firm foot when it comes to land of logic. No other tale or retelling has captured my interest the way Mahabharat has. Think of Krishna who is both a benovelant teacher and a shear cunning strategist in Kurukshetra...his role can be very well question and answered with equally confusing statements!

Beside this tale talks stuff that has traversed all time constraints and barrier. Paanchali's plight is the plight of every woman who tries to make a stand of her own...there are so many Karna who are forced to abandon the gifts they are born with...so many like Arjun who at times have to battle with their own kin! Why should we only be restricted to characters out of this epic...the situations and crisis talked about are too relevant here...

Wars are always fought with one side being the righteous one and the other tooting a horn of the wrong...the way the war and war mechanism is written about...it strikes a direct ring with the modern era! The Bramhastra seems to be our modern day nuke weapons...

This epic surpasses all time limits and maybe that's pretty much the reason why it continues to be a favorite!!

What fascinates me about Mahabharata is we are still witnessing everything portrayed in it in our day today lives at one or the other turn. Except a Krishna, every single person of Mahabharata are living around us through many persons. It is a big wonder that nothing has changed much even after the war that claimed to have restored Dharma. For me personally, the most complicated character is Krishna. But until unless I read the book and understand him upto some reasonable extent, I can't say anything about him than he fascinates me a lot, he raises so many questions inside me.

Nice post.As others have said, what is more fascinating is the fact that pick any story in this vast saga of 5000 years ago and you will find them existing so much around us or even within us at times. Basic aspects of human emotions remain same.. Just situations sometime change ..but essence remains same. How true each of Krishna teachings seems .. How we still see Karna struggling to make a mark on his own defying his birth status .. how a draupadi sometime is still helpless victim seeking justice in here... how a young brave son abhimanyu of land died fighting with so many ..in honor of his nation.. for sake of his kartavya.. how parents are still blinded in love of their children like dritrashtra n gandhari and even drona.. there is so much relevance in present era... every story exists around us.. It is fascinating to think that a genius wrote this all in single epic saga...story of humanity.. !

Wonderful post Anu!
Am in a bit of a rush but couldn't resist this discussion! Most of the fascinating things have been mentioned here so just to add I would say the most intriguing thing about MB for me is the sheer cosmic scale of the story and the role unseen forces play in driving it forward. There is constant strife not just between two individuals but also between an individual and a Force of Fate greater and mightier than him. Where this Force almost seems like a character in the story, which achieves the destined purpose by any means. And this PURPOSE is what I like to explore and understand. I am sharing an excerpt from an essay I recently read which I think carries the essence of what I am attempting to express:

All have been moving inevitably towards the catastrophe of Kurukshetra. Men did not know it; those who would have done everything possible to avert the calamity, helped its coming by their action or inaction; those who had a glimpse of it strove in vain to stop the wheels of Fate; Sri Krishna Himself as the karmayogin who does His duty without regard to results, went on that hopeless embassy to Hastinapura; but the Zeitgeist overbore all. It was only afterwards that men saw how like rivers speeding towards the sea, like moths winging towards the lighted flame, all that splendid, powerful and arrogant Indian world with its clans of kings and its weapons and its chariots and its gigantic armies were rushing towards the open mouths of the Destroyer to be lost in His mighty jaws, to be mangled between His gnashing teeth.

This inevitability of events and the certainty of a calamity continues to fascinate me as I try and make sense of the pawns by the names of individuals who played their parts in this great epic. And then I have a favorite character too understanding whom also keeps me occupied, but that I think is not for this thread😊

Great article...
Mahabharat will continue to fascinate us...
For the next 10 years, this star plus serial will have an impact on the minds of the novice viwers, until
another is remade.
We will go on debating on the famous controversies in epic, without coming to any conclusion.
People hardly learn from the epic, although there's so much to learn...
Still we have women getting raped n other people, including women accusing the victim rather than the rapists...
Even today, a man dating many girls is casually called a casanova, but a woman flirting with many men aris called s**t, with contempt. We accept polygyny easily but loathe the idea of polyandry.
Even today, there r people struggling to succeed,by going beyond their backgrounds...
Young mothers helplessly giving up their children, in shame, thanks to the hypocritical society...

We have not really learnt anything frpm the epic, and the teachings of the Lord...

Anyway, very thought provoking post...

why mb fascinates me? I think its fascinating fkr me not only because of high caliber astra or powerful warriors or only epic battle, it is appealing for ne as reading it I can imagine a fantasy world woven with every type of raw human or inhuman emotions or aspects. it represent light in dark and dark in light.its complex, as its really tough to fathom its characters actions and thoughts.many times we are left wondering why he or she would do that thing? it gives an opportunity to explore possibities and create our own view regarding that character! it doesnot bind u to view character as pentagonist or antagonist . this text lets ur imagination run free, and u will b able to relate to characters because all type of human traits are present in the characters of mb.

dont beat me up 4 saying all these 😆 bt what fascinates me most is that there is a strong possibility that d actual facts of mahabharat cd hv been erased from real history n fabricated storys cd hv been made to record down so that d future generations can not question the legality of yudhisthir inheriting d throne.
n b4 any of u jump on me i pray u question urselves..y wd famous ppl like karna bheeshma vidhur remain silent if draupadi was really disrobed?y do d versions vary at places or lack in consistency when talking abt d VH?sum places say d dress slipped sum say pulled sum says disrobed if krishna was realy a real char nt a figment of imagination then y in d 1st place wd he nt cum at that very instant when dushshasan even gt hold of draupadi?if krishna provided cloths to draupadi really so d ppl saw miracle infront their eyes..wdnt they hv understood its divine doing?hw cd even then drona bheesma vidhur nt speak out or reanounce thr services to d royal court?who gv yudhisthir right to bet on his bros n d common wife as if they were his property to gamble away?if 4 d sake of winning d war a supposedly truthful yudhisthir cd lie that ashathama is dead then cdnt he hv lied at other times too?a lie told willingly n knowing d facts is more sinful than a lie told at d blurt of d moment isnt it?so if a man to serve his purpose disarm a man by his well planned lie then cnt we ask hw much wd u really bliv in yudhisthir in real life?also d fact that pandavas were never pandus son..bt gods blessings..so hw can their right to d throne arise?even technically pandu ws given d throne as dhriti was blind bt d moment dhriti had son sdnt d legacy of d throne b returned to his blood line?sdnt duri b d legal n only automatic successor to d throne?evn if my pt is over ruled here then duri dnt gt d throne bt neither sd hv yudi as karna was d eldest son..what if kunti didnt remain a silent mute bt revealed all that karna ws d eldest n say karna inherited d throne then what?what if karna handed over d kingship to duri of his own will wd yudi still cd hv gt d throne?isnt their a possibility that arjun being married to subhodra gave an advantage to d pandavas as krishna bcums relative to arjun n 2 protect his sister's interest he being clever n hving foresightednes made better efficient war strategies ?plz cast aside d divine angle n think it as a battle of strategies n then u might b able to get what i mean to say..if kauravas were wiped out..pandavas won..cdnt they hv told historians to rewrite stories glorifying thr tales n struggles?we know when new ministers come they write down their own glorifying achievements so cdnt yudhisthir on bcuming d king ordered that d real records of kauravas b destroyed n manipulate a new story justifying their own actions alone..that they were d righteous one n d kauravas wrong doers?
ya d question may arise then y wd they glorify bheesma karna etc if they were rewriting fabricated facts..bt may b bcoz they had to show that they won against epic soldiers of d stature of karna bheesma drona so that they cd say look we defeated d gr8 warriors so they sang few praises for them too?also d fact that not one writer wrote down mahabharat bt there were many proves that they were building a myth nt recording down facts..
mahabharat fascinates me bcoz like a coin u can see 4m either side of d coin as head or tail..hw u c it is upto u to decide..whether u continue to bliv it like our elders bliv blindly or whether u question d conflicts n scrutinize d details n delve into d logic is upto d individual..all i bliv is a war against adharma cannot make u follow adharma too..then hw do u differentiate ?if kauravas were adharmis n they used tricks to win means krishna n pandavas wd follow d same?an eye 4 an eye policy?that itself is adharma..no evil can b won by equal plotting n cunningnes..i am nt convinced..i see thru mahabharat greedy weak ppl who tries to justify thr actions..tell me some thing if u dont bliv in god n dont pray bt u never sinned or wronged can god punish u?n what wd b ur crime?that u didnt bow down to god?bt arents gods above fury jealousy love lust etc?who is a god?one who dont show any human like qualitys of weakness...bt krishna showed partiality he gave gyan to all y didnt he just walk to kunti n give her d gyan to speak d truth b4 karnas death?y didnt he go n tell kunti to confess yudi ws d=nt d heir to d throne bt karna is n sd b if kauravas r 2 b denied then making karna king might hv solved d issue?duri loved karna..may b he wdnt hv resisted karna as much as he wd hv resisted yudi?so many innocent lives of common men cd hv been saved then..isnt it?also tell me y draupadi rejected karna ?can krishna if he was god advice draupadi to reject karna on basis of caste?can god indulge in casteism?all r equal for him isnt it?n arjun too kept talking of cast..bt duri is d only person who showed he didnt bliv in casteism by making karna a king of a small place..y?sum may say bcoz enemys enemy is frnd..bt even then duri showed he dnt bliv in caste system bt abilitys..much that i hate n condemn duri 4 VH bt still i respect him 4 showing that he honoured quality of a person above caste..

now u can pounce on me 😆..bt i hv no intentions to hurt any1 i just wish nt to gulp down a story handed down thru generations..i want to reanalyze n hunt tit bit facts n understand human reactions..this post is nt with intentions to maligh or hurt any1 bt to enlighten myself as a person..😊

@JustMyself. There are so many questions raised by MB. Yours are just as valid.

Dont know that Yudhishtir led to this version of events, since he doesnt come off too well😆. My question is that since this was narrated to Parikshit, and since the gurus who did the narration were dependent on the king, wouldnt that have colored the narrative? As you said, ArSu was darned politically convenient for both sides. Some versions say that the 999 sarees never happened but VH did. Some say dharma rescued her, you can interpret that as you wish.

As I said, if you leave divinity aside, it is a fascinating read of the political strategy of the 2 sides. They even make the same moves. Trying to marry Draupadi to begin with, where Krishna intervened. Again with Subhadra, the same thing. Getting help from Narayani sena,

As almost everyone has said, what we seem to be doing is relating it to our lives today and seeing a helpless and not really helpless Draupadi or a conflicted Arjun or a struggling Karna or blinded Gandhari in what goes on around us. That may explain the popularity of MB

@justmyself interesting points! regarding ur question being mb written so that it whitewashes pandavas then I think then they were realy stupid people because their mistakes does glare from epic itself! because if it would have been me I would have removed even the account of chhal kapat! why in war or text even the good qualities of kaurava mentioned? just paint them black its not like anyone is going to come with a timemachine? why yudhishthir should b shown a gambling addict? why valor of enemy should b praised? one thing I agree with u is even if u think krishna as a god or not, an incarnation is bound in limits of human world. and krishna "never" asked drau to reject karna.it was drau choice he was nowhere involved. but wether he was a casteist or not that's a different matter altogether abt dury being refuting social boundaries and being a social reformist is something I don't agree on.
