Isn't that a good thing? It's been a few years of talking and dissecting MB and I haven't been able to stop 😆

it fascinates me because it is an unique blend of all sorts of spices we crave for in a story! All the characters are multi-layered and wear one of the million shades of grey!
And that is one of the major reasons I hate StarMB too, all the characters here are either white or black, which is an impossible and very boring proposition IMHO.

If MB is ever made on a huge scale, I mean a spectacular scale in which the Western TV shows are made and they try to keep it as dark and as complex as the Epic: am sure it would outshine all Western shows. When I watch Game of Thrones, it appears not even 1% as intriguing as Mahabharat!😊

Wow. Great discussion going on guys. I loved reading every reply posted here. Here are my two cents.

I don't know much about how good ruler Yudhishtira was. But Duryodhana was not a bad ruler. Of course he was a nightmare to Pandavas, but he was very kind and caring towards his subjects. That is why he managed to get eleven akhauhini troups for the war, unlike what did they show in the show.

There is this incident that once severe drought affected the kingdom, which was followed by severe poverty. And Duryodhan did spend even the last penny he had to make sure that no one sleeps hungry in his kingdom. Also he managed to visit every single house to make sure that no one is worried. I don't know how much of this is true. My dad has told me this story. But he also cited the illicit means in which Duryodhana tried to satisfy his greed for the throne. He also said that the ration system for supplying daily needed food etc for everyone, organised by civil supplies department of Kerala State has loosely adopted this idea of Duryodhana. And still, Kerala is the no.1 state in all over India in case food security for past 50-60 years...

Except for his treatment towards Pandavas, Dury was a good person. I've no idea about Yudhi.

Yayy...I knew it my Dury can't be the evil one as he is depicted in popular culture...😊 Right from my childhood, whenever I read or heard of any version of MB, my heart always cried for this character. I always strongly vouch for his claim to the throne...because in those days the right to throne only came through inheritance and he was the eldest "biological heir" of Vichitravirya...😊 My Dury rocks...😃

@Riti- yeah. In some parts of Kerala, Dury is still considered with love and devotion because he was never a nightmare for his subjects.

@JustMySelf- yeah. Dury was a man unlike what we've heard. Almost all of us have heard only stories about his worst side. Apart from his rivalry with Pandavas, he was a great man. If you read Urubhanga (means the breaking of thigh), a Sanskrit text written on Duryodhana's death, by the most famous Sanskrit play writer Bhasa who is considered to be lived sometime around Veda Vyasa himself, his both sides are explained very beautifully.

@amritat- I've already stated I don't know how much of it is authentic. But when a system founded by him got adopted by a State Goverment and it is still functioning very well, we can't completely discard it also. Only that I meant.

@Neutral2- I've heard about the Malanada Duryodhana temple and kaurava temples you mentioned.😃

beautiful thread with wonderful replies ... 👏

Mahabharat is undoubtedly one of the greatest works ever ... it's legendary ... the more we read, the more we love and the more we want to read ... its like a never ending process!!

the widest and the deepest of various emotions intertwined so articulately ... it boggles you, it fascinates you, it teaches you ... no word from the epic seems outdated ... i believe that's where it's charm lies ... in short i love it for its PRACTICAL WISDOM !!!

Great discussion Anu

There is no doubt that MB is one of the most fascinating and engaging epics ever written. I still can't get enough of it- any version-even if a bit distorted.

I give maximum credit to it's primary author- Mr. Ved Vyas. I think it's his brilliant writing, his well etched out characters, descriptions and lessons imparted via every track or character that appeal to so many even after 5000 years.

How many authors can boast of writing an epic where every character is grey but still iconic and some even revered to this day?

One can find an archetype of every personality in this book..

Thx Sangeeta

Thats why I think of Veda Vyas to be narrator than an author. All characters, including Krishna, have some deep shades of grey. And the events are so strange and so complex, they have to be based on fact at least at the core, in my opinion

Hmm, I find VH to be the defining incident in the epic. Or at least the turning point. I too, have grown up hearing that Syyodhan was actually a good king. I have some sympathy for Karna. None at all for Dushy.

But for their part in VH, I cannot find much in these characters to dislike. That is why I dislike Yudhishtir almost as much as Dushy (may be even more). Wagering on your wife and brothers, like they were your cats or dogs!😲. I liked the ending of Parva, where Bheem tells Krishna that he and Arjun are going to be the rulers while Yudhi remains the figurehead.
