i wouldn't say karna was not a warrior... he was a great warrior.. there is no doubt about it... karna knew dharma... yes indeed... he had supreme knowledge of dharma... but did he follow dharma?? no... similarly bheeshma pitamah... guru drona.. though they knew dharma they were all bounded by their vows and burdens...
when karna said to kunti.. that either way her 5 sons will remain ... at that time only it showed karna knew pandavas will win... and he will die.. as he is on thhe wrong side... pandavas win was not possible without karna's death as he wouldn''t let anyone to harm duryodhan... and till the time dury is there war would continue... and at the end for her 5 sons to remain he would have to die...maybe karna was the greatest archer... had the knowledge of greatest weopans... but still he didn't used them for right purpose... and that is why arjuna is known as greatest archer... because he too had knowledge of all weopans and archery ... but he never went aginst dharma to use them... for the sole purpose to show someone or prove to someone...karna could have easily defeated arjuna... but could not.. because he was on adharma's side... that is why lord krishna used all his tactics to bring him on side of dharma...
from my understanding ... every character in Mahabharat had their own dharam, they defined dharam in their own terms ... and somewhere down the line they justified it ...
it may be a completely different story from a 3rd persons view however!
Pitama Bhishma, Guru Drona and Karan's dharam was to live up to the vows they made come what may, ... they gave their lives to honour their loyalties and promises they had once made ... for them dharam was been true to their vows. In their minds and hearts they knew where true righteous lay ...that is why Bhishma gave the victory blessing to Yudhishthir and not Duryodhan, Drona didn't give Ashwatthama a victory blessing instead he told Ashwatthama to fight on his own strength not by a blessing ... and Karan didn't seek any victory blessing
1) Pitama Bhishma - vow was to protect who ever sat on the crown, he would see his father's shadow in the King and protect him under any circumstance no questions asked
2) Drona's dharam was being loyal to Hastinapur, coz Hastinapur sheltered him when he needed ... so he couldn't go against the salt he had eaten
3) Karan dharam was his loyalty to his friend ...
defining dharam and being righteous were not exactly the same
I also remember in one of the recent episodes ... when Lord Krishna is talking to Balram... he says the problem lies in the fact that people are so dedicated to their promises that they cannot see the pain of a 3rd person ... karooma sookh gayi hai (no place left for compassion) ... Lord Krishna says that if a vow has to be broken for true compassion ... then it MUST BE BROKEN ... defining that compassion is the highest form of Dharam ...
for Karan I don't think it was about winning at all ... winning for him meant only 3 things his ... 3 wishes ...
1) to be loyal to his friend Duryodhan
2) kill Arjun coz he wanted to prove a point that your ability lies in your strength and not your caste
3) to die with dignity before Duryodhan
I truly believe that Mahabharat is not about defending characters ... it about learning from them ... peace out
