thanks a lot for the article

truly he was defeated by the curses more than anything else i guess some people are born with ill fate

regarding Karna's KK daan and getting shakti in return even if we go by the detailed version in KMG where in Karna himself asks for the shakti there are two points i want to state

1)Surya dev teels karna about indra's intention and not to give away KK which karna clealry refuses to do here karna is not talking about getting anything in return he just says that he will give away even his life if its asked for

Kama replied, 'Surely, this itself is highly fortunate for me that the god himself of splendour addresses me today, seeking my welfare. Listen, however, to these words of mine! May it please thee, O bestower of boons, it is only from affection that I tell thee this! If I am dear to thee, I should not be dissuaded from the observance of my vow! O thou that are possessed of the wealth of effulgence, the whole world knoweth this to be my vow that, of a verity, I am prepared to give away life itself unto superior Brahmanas! If, O best of all rangers of the sky, Sakra cometh to me, disguised as a Brahmana, to beg for the benefit of the sons of Pandu, I will, O chief of the celestials, give him the ear-rings and the excellent mail, so that my fame which hath spread over the three worlds may not suffer any diminution! For persons like us, it is not fit to save life by a blame-worthy act. On the contrary, it is even proper for us to meet death with the approbation of the world and under circumstances bringing fame. Therefore, will I bestow upon Indra the ear-rings with my coat of mail! If the slayer himself of Vala and Vritra cometh to ask for the ear-rings for the benefit of the sons of Pandu, that will conduce to my fame, leading at the same time to his infamy! O thou possessed of splendour, I wish for fame in this world, even if it is to be purchased with life itself, for they that have fame enjoy the celestial regions, while they that are destitute of it are lost. Fame keepeth people alive in this world even like a mother, while infamy killeth men even though they may move about with bodies undestroyed. O lord of the worlds, O thou possessed of the wealth of effulgence, that fame is the life of men is evidenced by an ancient sloka sung by the Creator himself,--In the next world it is fame that is the chief support of a person, while in this world pure fame lengthens life. Therefore, by giving away my ear-rings and mail with both of which I was born I will win eternal fame! And by duly giving away the same to Brahmanas according to the ordinance, by offering up my body (as a gift to the gods) in the sacrifice of war, by achieving feats difficult of performance, and by conquering my foes in fight, I will acquire nothing but renown. And by dispelling on the field of battle the fears of the affrighted that may beg for their lives, and relieving old men and boys and Brahmanas from terror and anxiety, I will win excellent fame and the highest heaven. My fame is to be protected with the sacrifice of even my life. Even this, know thou, is my vow! By giving away such a valuable gift to Maghavan disguised as a Brahmana, I

'As thou, O lord of splendour, knowest me for thy worshipper, so also thou knowest that there is nothing which I cannot give away in charity, O thou of fiery rays! Neither my wives, nor my sons, nor my own self, nor my friends, are so dear to me as thou, on account of the veneration I feel for thee, O lord of splendour! Thou knowest, O maker of light, that high-souled persons bear a loving regard for their dear worshippers. Karna revereth me and is dear to me. He knoweth no other deity in heaven,--thinking this thou hast, O lord, said unto me what is for my benefit. Yet, O thou of bright rays, again do I beseech thee with bended head, again do I place myself in thy hands. I will repeat the answer I have already given. It behoveth thee to forgive me! Death itself is not fraught with such terrors for me as untruth! As regards especially the Brahmanas, again, I do not hesitate to yield up my life even for them! And, O divine one, respecting what thou hast said unto me of Phalguna, the son of Pandu, let thy grief born of thy anxiety of heart, O lord of splendour, be dispelled touching him and myself; for I shall surely conquer Arjuna in battle! Thou knowest, O deity, that I have great strength of weapons obtained from Jamadagnya and the high-souled Drona. Permit me now, O foremost of celestials, to observe my vow, so that unto him of the thunderbolt coming to beg of me, I may give away even my life!'

Then surya tells him that if he is so determined to give away KK then at least he must ask Indra for something which will secure his victory in some way and the he suggests karna to ask for the dart to kill arjuna. This all happens before virat war karna stil doesn't know the truth and arjuna is his enemy so if he can get some weapon that will ensure arjuna' death don't see anything wrong in it.After all don't people all the time do 'tapsaya' and all to get divine weapons. This was Karna's tapsaya only what he gave away in tapsaya was much more than what he got

2)Shakti could only be used once only after karna had exhausted all his weapons and was at his more deaparate moment in no way is this equal to what KK would have done for him

i wouldn't say karna was not a warrior... he was a great warrior.. there is no doubt about it... karna knew dharma... yes indeed... he had supreme knowledge of dharma... but did he follow dharma?? no... similarly bheeshma pitamah... guru drona.. though they knew dharma they were all bounded by their vows and burdens...
when karna said to kunti.. that either way her 5 sons will remain ... at that time only it showed karna knew pandavas will win... and he will die.. as he is on thhe wrong side... pandavas win was not possible without karna's death as he wouldn''t let anyone to harm duryodhan... and till the time dury is there war would continue... and at the end for her 5 sons to remain he would have to die...
maybe karna was the greatest archer... had the knowledge of greatest weopans... but still he didn't used them for right purpose... and that is why arjuna is known as greatest archer... because he too had knowledge of all weopans and archery ... but he never went aginst dharma to use them... for the sole purpose to show someone or prove to someone...
karna could have easily defeated arjuna... but could not.. because he was on adharma's side... that is why lord krishna used all his tactics to bring him on side of dharma...

thanks for your thoughts...I get your point but there is always a flip side to everything ... it's just putting yourself in their shoes ... I know it's extremely difficult to empathize it is often easier to sympathize with them

from my understanding ... every character in Mahabharat had their own dharam, they defined dharam in their own terms ... and somewhere down the line they justified it ...

it may be a completely different story from a 3rd persons view however!

Pitama Bhishma, Guru Drona and Karan's dharam was to live up to the vows they made come what may, ... they gave their lives to honour their loyalties and promises they had once made ... for them dharam was been true to their vows. In their minds and hearts they knew where true righteous lay ...that is why Bhishma gave the victory blessing to Yudhishthir and not Duryodhan, Drona didn't give Ashwatthama a victory blessing instead he told Ashwatthama to fight on his own strength not by a blessing ... and Karan didn't seek any victory blessing

1) Pitama Bhishma - vow was to protect who ever sat on the crown, he would see his father's shadow in the King and protect him under any circumstance no questions asked

2) Drona's dharam was being loyal to Hastinapur, coz Hastinapur sheltered him when he needed ... so he couldn't go against the salt he had eaten

3) Karan dharam was his loyalty to his friend ...

defining dharam and being righteous were not exactly the same

I also remember in one of the recent episodes ... when Lord Krishna is talking to Balram... he says the problem lies in the fact that people are so dedicated to their promises that they cannot see the pain of a 3rd person ... karooma sookh gayi hai (no place left for compassion) ... Lord Krishna says that if a vow has to be broken for true compassion ... then it MUST BE BROKEN ... defining that compassion is the highest form of Dharam ...

for Karan I don't think it was about winning at all ... winning for him meant only 3 things his ... 3 wishes ...

1) to be loyal to his friend Duryodhan

2) kill Arjun coz he wanted to prove a point that your ability lies in your strength and not your caste

3) to die with dignity before Duryodhan

The shalya thing was completely because of their own foolishness and penchant for trickery. Seriously, why would you trick someone and his large army to fight for you when he wants to be part of the opposition? good for them shalya didn instruct his army to kill kaurav soldiers instead of harming the opposition -- someone else in his position today would not be forgiving and would be fueled by vindictive feelings to do who knows what? And then you go and make him a charioteer when he clearly objects to it ...

TFS :)

I'm not a karna fan in Mahabharat but i do not hate him either. his charecter has suffered the ultimate in the mahabharat.

i wanted to add one point here..

wen Karna has been slained by Arjun on 16th day and he was taking his last breath den Lord sun and Indra started quarelling whose son is the bestt and den Govind enters the scene to prove and disguises himself as a brahmin.

He asks for a Daan from Karna and he replies i do not have anythng to give not even his saans but again he remembers dat he has a golden tooth and takes his knife and cuts it and give it to the brahmin.

Brahmin says dat is a jhoota, i cant touch it and asks karna to wash it and den give it to him. Karna even in that state does the same and den gives it to him..

Den Krishna says see he is a true warrior and a daanveer. noone can question about the same.
