I know why Drona sided w/ the Kauravas - he wanted an opportunity to fight Arjun, and on top of that, Ashwatthama envied Arjun for being his father's favorite. But Drona got carried away and slaughtered the entire Panchala and other armies that backed the Pandavas (which is incidentally why I don't think much about Arjun's capabilities, since he couldn't protect his armies, despite his own vanity and all the hype about his prowess)

But I've never found any pratigya Bheeshma made other than the Brahmachari one. There is a reference in MB about Duryodhan expecting Drona & Kripa to join them b'cos he had Ashwatthama's support - essentially, the tail wagging the dog. But I've never figured out why Bheeshma didn't, for instance, stay neutral like Vidura.

shruti what ur view abt below except! it says dury approached bheeshma to fight for him
Duryodhan began to worry that so many voices
speaking against him and his own father worried
to death, the reconciliation with Pandavas may
result. He also wanted elders such as Bhishm,
Drona and Kripa committed. He got up and said,
"O King, your worries are baseless and far
fetched. We are very capable of winning in a
battle. Sometime ago, I had approached Bhishm,
Drona, Kripa with their support and advice and
they affirmed that they will fight for us and said
that 'Let anyone come. We will surely curb their
pride and bring them down. We are incapable of
defeat in a battle'. They have declared their
support to us. Who can defeat Bhishm, the
disciple of Parashuram, whose father granted
him the boon of death by self-choice? He had
defeated all the kings at Kashi. Do the Pandavas
really believe that they can overcome him? No
one could kill him. If he declared his intention
to fight with all his heart, then all was not lost."

also this dialog of dhrit about bheeshma being duty bound to support him
"Alas! Destiny is too powerful. I can clearly see the death of all my sons and I am unable to prevent it. Perhaps our only hope now lies in the support of our three aged, wise heroes -Bhishm, Drona and Kripa. They will doubtlessly repay the support and kindness we have given them by coming out for battle against the Pandavas. Even though the sons of Kunti are as dear to them as my sons, they will not avoid their duty. It seems to me, O Sanjay, that knowledge does not destroy woe; rather, distress destroys knowledge. As I contemplate the impending destruction of the Kurus, grief bewilders my senses and confounds my mind. I cannot let go of my attachment for my sons, the kingdom, my wife, my grandsons, and a thousand other things. Such blind attachment leads only to suffering."

It was Bhishma's Kshatriya dharma to fight for the Kauravas. But I seriously doubt that he considered this particular dharma then.

It's clear that why the other men sided with the Kauravas. Bheeshma, his case is truly unusual and way too tough to understand.

I don't think kshatriya dharm was the reason.

Bhishma might have been asked to back out due to the two conditions laid by him. He wouldn't have been able to fulfil his Kshatriya dharma then. So this Kshatriya dharma point gets disregarded, becomes invalid here.
