Just observe the difference between him and the others now. Taking their defeat/slaughter as a reference. The slaughter of warriors like Drona, Karna was engineered by Krishna. But he didn't 'plan' anything in Bhishma's case. Since he couldn't be killed, he had to be eliminated. So Krishna didn't plan Bhishma's elimination even when he was well aware of Shikhandi's birth purpose. Why the difference? There are a lot more incidents.

the lord who wiped off all the kshatriya men effortlessly wid the speed of mind, could nt overcome Bhishma and got defeated. So he was the greatest warrior..and highly skilled in other fields also.

Apart from being the greatest warrior, he was also the most knowledgeable man then, having studied under sages like Vasishtha, Brihaspati, Markandeya etc. In fact, he was termed as the 'Second Markandeya' by Krishna.
Such a devoted, pure and noble soul can't side with evil unless there's a strong footing.

the most common belief is that, he had given a pledge to his father. But it isn't in the texts.

I used to believe in this tale. But when I read the pratigya part in KMG, I didn't find it anywhere.

Since Bhishma was the greatest, noblest and purest warrior, and also the most knowledgeable man, him siding with the evil teaches a very important lesson. Virtue can't be conquered by an immoral conduct, regardless of the man who attempts to execute it.

Nobody except the supreme can be behind this teaching, Bhishma was the way to prove it. So I believe that Krishna wanted him to side with the evil.
