I just watched today's episode.

I must say, even though the episode is stupid and fiction. I really enjoyed today's episode. I loved the Bheem and Hidimba scenes!!

The only issue i have is showing pandavas giving so much respect to karna .like you said they always reffered to him as sutputra and looked down upoun him which is why Karna became more bitter towards them .This hanst been shown at all in this epic

Its ok if they want to portray Karna as much a morally upright figure as Yudhishtir, but that would also require them to make lots of modifications during those episodes where Karna acted quite uncharitably, otherwise it would look completely out of place. (Its of course understandable that Karna is today seen as a tragic hero and there are more Karna fans than those of Arjun - more people today name their kids Karan than Arjun or any other character from the epic - and the CVs are going with the public mood.)

So far they have set no ground for Karna's extreme hostility towards pandavas or his general bitter and sharp tongued behaviour with the elders. From the beginning they have shown him as a soft-spoken man with strong sense of righteousness who gets teary-eyed before Kunti. Even if they are relying upon Draupadi's insult (which itself is questionable looking at current trends) to churn out his grey side, was it so intense that it could drive him to abandoning all his principles and having her stripped in the court?

I am being serious.

I think it's perhaps because I watched it without high expectations. I thought it will be total rubbish and therefore was impressed 😆

I actually quite liked the Bheem Hidimba eating thing, even thought it was silly and fictitious.

I also enjoyed Krishna's discourse.!

Hi Rehanism!

I posted there once or twice, but I doubt I posted there enough for anyone to remember who I was.

I was a regular on Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii forums before this and Jai Maa Durga.

Then I didn't really come on much here till Mahabharat came.

Nice to meet you though 😊

As far as I understand, Karna's knowledge of the fact that he was a discarded - possibly an illegitimate, bas***d - child that turned him into a cold and bitter youth. Also its due to this reason,I think, that he was obsessed with proving himself and outmatching Kshatriyas (esp Arjun, who was reputed to be the foremost warrior among Kshatriyas) so that no one ever dares to touch that weak spot of his. In this serial, neither is Karna aware of his adoption nor does he seem to be half as cold or ambitious. In fact he might well be the softest of all in the younger generation and often Yudhishtir appears to be more calculative and worldly wise before him. Nor does anyone, including his arch rival Arjun, ever derides him by calling him 'Sutputra' (perhaps to make Arjun appear more virtuous and less arrogant and casteist than he's supposed to be). That word has rarely been used so far. So I'm wondering how will they justify the central role Karna played in Draupadi's humiliation. Also Draupadi seems to be too saintly, ignorant of societal divisions and not someone who may start looking down upon lower castes in a matter of months. Either they have to show something drastic happening to his character between Draupadi's Swayamvar and the Dice game or they have to simply turn him into a helpless spectator to the events like Bhishma and Drona. Otherwise its absurd to think of Karna who's so teary eyed, polite and morally upright suddenly instigating a woman's molestation in public.

I think the adolescent Karna was closer to the character. The older one resembles Yudhishtir and Ram more than Karna.</font>

I acquiese. Particularly about the fact that he remains clueless about his parents, he's no longer the adolescent surely he would have been told by now. You were saying about pandavas not being shown to disrespect Karna but I do remember a scene with Karna, pandav n kunti and they were taunting him in a way thatvwas akin to bullying while Karna absorbs these remarks silently. Karna has yet to display that passion and vigour, instead his fragility is on show via the emotional scenes with kunti which there have been far too much of. Its going to negate from that emotional moment when they do meet up and Kunti reveals his birth identity to him.

But they haven't been using logic in their portrayals of Karna.

For instance, in the original story, Karna didn't get an opportunity to fight Arjun - by the time he was crowned, Adiratha greeted him & Bhima insulted him, it was sunset, and also, Kripa didn't allow a battle based on just a spur of the moment coronation. That partly fueled Karna's bitterness. Had he actually been given a chance to battle Arjun on that day itself, he'd have been a lot less bitter, since that was the very thing he wanted.

Yet, they showed him running into Kunti the very next day, and when the Pandavas joined them, he told Kunti in her face that her sons were his enemies. Yeah, it's fascinating to ponder how Kunti might have handled the situation, but certainly not this way. If Kunti had told Karna & the Pandavas that they were all in fact her sons, then Karna would still have been able to return Anga to Duryodhan & take his rightful place in the family - provided Adiratha & Radha released him.

I also disagree w/ you in the last page about Karna being aware that he was abandoned. It was Krishna who revealed that to him, and revealed who his parents were. Karna's issue was that in Drona's gurukul, where he actually was a shishya, he envied Arjun, and wanted to surpass him. The split came b'cos Drona only taught Arjun (and then Ashwatthama) the secret of the Brahmashira weapon. That's the one that Karna got from Parashurama, along w/ the curse that he'd forget it's mantra when he needed it the most.

But back to the portrayal - they have not portrayed Karna as a saint. Like in the fictitious concert where Arjun played the veena for Subhadra, Karna needlessly joined Duryodhan in insulting Arjun right in front of Kunti, and that one was unprovoked. Arjun was the one punished for this - had to wash Karna's feet. Which is ridiculous - in the real story, whenever there was a social occasion, it was Karna who was the outcast.
