The other question - how could Shantanu grant a boon of ichcha-mrityu, where Bheeshma could only die when he wanted to?

Yeah right?
How could Shantanu, who went crazed and mooney eyed behind fishergirls and fishgirls, grant icchaa mrtyu? Does this have anything to do with the fact that he could heal people by touch?

But wasn't he cursed to live a long life anyway from previous life? Also what was the point of amba revenge when bheeshma could choose his time to die anyway?

There are 2 things that strike me as odd - the conditions of the deaths of Bheeshma & Drona
Amba wanted to kill Bheeshma, and after several births, ended up as Shikhandi. Then why was he unable to kill Bheeshma himself? Granted, Bheeshma wouldn't shoot at him due to him being Shikandini and Amba previously, but that never stopped Shikandi from attacking him. So why couldn't Shikandi have, in fact on day 1 itself, attacked Bheeshma and taken advantage of the fact that he wouldn't attack her, and finish him off? Why were his arrows unable to penetrate Bheeshma? In fact, Bheeshma did wrong Amba and deserved to die - I don't agree w/ the Mahabharata characters who seem to hold Bheeshma blameless.

The other case - Dhrishtadyumna. His father obtained him in the yagna b'cos he wanted a son who'd kill Drona, but Dhrishtadyumna never won a battle against Drona. In fact, in the war, he was constantly defeated by Drona, Ashwatthama and Kripacharya. So what was the point in the gods giving him to Drupad via that yagna? In fact, how was he even the best warrior to command the Pandava army? Since it wasn't gonna be Arjun, it should have gone to Satyaki, who after Arjun & Bhima, was the most effective warrior in the Pandava army.

I mean, Arjun could have gone into battle w/ even an unchanged Shikhandini in his chariot, w/ the same result - Shikhandi didn't need to become a man. Similarly, the Pandavas could have lied to Drona, and then Drupada, had he survived, could himself have gone ahead and beheaded Drona - why do a yagna for Dhrishtadyumna if that was the way it was gonna happen?

The author had a tough time keeping his stories straight - just look at Mahabharata vs Shrimad Bhagvatam, for starters.
Another question - Parashurama was well known for his blind hatred of Kshatriyas - even when he confronted Rama, it was more hostile than not. Later, he cursed Karna for lying to him, and suspected that he was a Kshatriya. Given all that, why did he agree to teach Devrath, given that the latter too was a Kshatriya? Did Ganga cut any deals w/ him - you may not bathe in me unless you tutor Devrath? 😆

I hope someone will help me..
I wanted to know is Karna married ?If so who was his wife & in which scripture it is mentioned?
I have read that Karna's secrete birth was known to Five; they were Krishna, Kunti, Suryadev,Duryodhana, and Sahadeva.I now Sahadeva is regarded as "trikala jnani" and owing to this he might have known about Karna's janma rahasya...but I wanted to know is there a particular incident where it is described?

The secret of Karna's birth was known only to 3 people - Kunti, Krishna & Bheeshma. No one else. Duryodhan & Sahadev had no such idea. In Sahadev's case, had he known, there's no way he'd have kept that a secret from Yudhisthir. The whole story would have been different had he known. As for Duryodhan, chances are likely that he'd have insulted Kunti even more for having an illegitimate son, and thrown Karna into his enemies list.

Karna's wives - in the main Vyasa Mahabharata, they are not named, although in Stri Parva, Gandhari points out to Krishna among other women Karna's widow & Vrishasena's mother mourning over the deaths of her husband & son.

In Janameya's MB, Karna's wives are named. The first is Vrushali, who committed Sati on Karna's pyre. The second is Supriya, a friend of Duryodhan's wife Bhanumati. Vrushali was probably the mother of Vrishasena, while Supriya was probably the mother of Vrishaketu, the son of Karna who survived, according to this account.

Thanks for your reply...
About Karna's birth secrete I read it in Gadayuddha(a kannada version) written by Ranna that once when Duryodhana and Karna were in the jungle they were very tired and went to a rishi's kuthira Suryadev in the rishi avatar first welcomed karna then duryodhana 'when karna went duryodhana questioned Surya about his behavior to which Surya said he would answer him only if he promises that it would be a secrete.when Duryodhana promised, Surya explained the truth without revealing his true identity..and owing to his promise he never shared this incident even with Karna and Ranna had given no info regardig Sahadev's case...If you don't mind will you please explain the incident where Bheeshma came to know about this?
