Congratulations, Varaali, for launching this thread. And thanks Minakshi for including links of past threads that were created in DBSK.
My first question here - can anyone narrate the story of how Ganga was cursed to be born on earth, as well as the curse of the Vasus, and how they ended up born to her?

Ganga was not cursed to be born a woman. It was her choice. The Vasus once attacked Vaishtha's cow (was it Nandini or Subala?) without realizing whose it was. Vaisishtha (as all rishis are wont to do, no surprises there) cursed them to be born on Earth.

The Vasus fell @ his feet and begged forgiveness. Vasishtha modified his curse and said 7 of them would be redeemed soon after birth, but the one who actually dared to touch and drag Nandini / Subala will have to live his life out on Earth.

The Vasus them approached Ganga who taking pity on them, allowed them to take birth through her and assured them she would relieve them of their curse as soon as they are born.

The condition that she imposed on Shantanu was due to the fact that once the eighth Vasu was born, she had no further role to play and hence her relationship with Shantanu became meaningless.

I have a question about the organization of the Mahabharata.
Why is the first chapter - Adi Parva - so huge? It covers everything from prehistoric Mahabharata right up to the destruction of Khandavaprastha. Instead, like the latter chapters are split by the Kaurava commanders, this one could have been split like below:

Adi Parva (for Janamejaya's yagna/Parikshit's death)
Shantanu Parva (birth of Bheeshma, marriage to Satyavati)
Vichitravirya Parva (abduction of AAA, death of Vichitravirya)
Pandu Parva (AA giving birth up to death of Pandu & return of Pandavas & Satyavati & AA retiring to the forest)
Dhritarashtra Parva (until the destruction of Khandavprastha)

That would have been more managable to read & search

I guess its classed as background information before war breaks out? Unless there's another logical reason behind it.

According to Markendeya purana Draupadi was shuchi, the wife of Indra?

DRAUPADI'S FIVE HUSBANDS

The birds say- Frightened by the severe penance of Trishira, Indra killed him to protect his authority and power. But the sin of killing a Brahmin took away Indra's radiance. Trishira was the son of Twashta. Twashta became furious at his son's death. He plucked one strand of hair from his hair-lock and offered it in the sacrificial fire. This resulted into the creation of a formidable and strong demon named Vritrasur. This demon was created with the objective of killing Indra.

Learning about the birth of Vritrasur, Indra sent Saptarishis as emissaries to work out a pact with the demon. The Saptarishis effected a friendship between Indra and Vritrasur. But Indra had other ideas. He took Vritrasur by surprise and killed him. This deceitful action of Indra further enraged the clans of the demons. Soon the atrocities of the demons increased to unbearable limits. Even Prithvi felt unable to bear the burden of their atrocities. She approached the deities and requested them to get her rid of the burden.

Thus, to relieve Prithvi of her burden, the deities began to take incarnation on earth. Dharma and Vayu implanted Indra's radiance in the womb of Kunti. This resulted in the birth of Yudhishthir and Bheema. Then Indra himself produced Arjuna from Kunti. Nakul and Sahadev were born because of Indra's radiance implanted by Ashwini kumars in the womb of Madri. Thus all the five Pandavas originated from the same source even though they appeared as distinct entities, whereas Draupadi was none other than Shuchi, the wife of Indra, produced from the altar in Drupad's palace. In human incarnation, Draupadi got five Pandavas as her husband.
