Dhurandhar collected a mighty 27 crore on its first day which is way above the 15 to 18 crore estimates many trade experts were whispering only a day earlier. It is also Ranveer’s first out and out solo release in more than two and a half years which makes this victory extra satisfying.

The film also arrives during a period when some wondered whether Ranveer’s box office charm had slowed down. Clearly it has not. The actor seems to have flipped a cinematic switch and the timing could not be more perfect. If early momentum continues, Dhurandhar might also threaten his biggest lifetime grossers but that answer will unfold over the coming weeks.

The second position belongs to the grand Sanjay Leela Bhansali spectacle that turned Ranveer into one of the most magnetic antagonists of the decade. His hattrick with both Bhansali and Deepika Padukone, Padmaavat opened with a huge 24 crore that included a chunky 5 crore from paid previews. The film had walked into cinemas surrounded by headlines, chatter and some intense conversations but none of it stopped audiences from turning up in remarkable numbers.

Ranveer’s fierce interpretation of Alauddin Khilji quickly became legendary and many still regard this role as one of the boldest choices of his career. The opening day proved that even a villainous Ranveer can pull crowds like a bonafide hero.

3. Simmba - Rs 20.72 crore

In third place comes the electric team up between Ranveer and filmmaker Rohit Shetty. Simmba introduced a more playful cop persona who mixed swagger with heartfelt emotion. The film arrived with strong curiosity, clever marketing and a feeling that something loud and entertaining was on the way. Viewers responded instantly and the film opened at a superb 20.72 crore.

Simmba eventually became a giant success and turned into one of those party films that people love rewatching. Many fans still quote Simmba lines with mischievous pride.

The pre release excitement around its music and the emotional punch of the trailer helped Gully Boy hit the ground running. The opening also proved that Ranveer could lead films with entirely different tones and still pull in huge day one numbers.

5. Gunday - Rs 16.12 crore

To find the fifth spot we travel back about 11 years to the Yash Raj action drama Gunday. Starring Arjun Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and the late Irrfan Khan, the film opened at a strong 16.12 crore. At that stage of his career, Ranveer was still building his star power and this opening helped cement his potential as a dependable leading man.

Curiously, the romantic saga Goliyon Ki Raas Leela Ram Leela just missed out with 16.05 crore which shows how tight the margins were in those early days of Ranveer’s rise.

As things stand, Dhurandhar now sits comfortably at the top, waving a giant flag that announces Ranveer is back in his strongest form. Whether the film goes on to outgross Padmaavat in total collection is a question everyone will enjoy debating.

For the moment though, the superstar gets to celebrate his best day one ever and audiences get to enjoy yet another unforgettable Ranveer Singh moment on the big screen.
