Chapter Seventeen - Caught Red-Handed
"Wh...What did you just call me?"
She pulled out of the embrace slowly and placed her palm on the side of my face as tears rolled down her face.
"Rishabh. My Rishabh."
You'd expect me to be ecstatic...but I was more shocked. I stood there, still as a statue as she pushed herself into my arms once again.
"You know...?"
"Since this morning."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
She pulled out of the embrace again and stepped away slightly. She walked towards the window and pulled open the blinds. I watched her from behind, waiting for an answer to escape her mouth. She stood still for a moment, but then finally spoke.
"I was angry."
That didn't surprise me. I had been expecting anger from her end.
"When you called me Midhi, I thought I was hearing things. But by the time you had stepped outside the studio, everything had clicked. Your name, your long lost friend, everything. So I followed behind you, using your watch as an excuse to see you. As you turned to stare at me, I became even angrier. I wanted to yell, I wanted to ask why you hid it from me."
"But your job held you back, didn't it? You didn't want to make a scene?"
I heard a low, sarcastic laugh escape her mouth as she stood with her back towards me. She had her arms crossed as she gazed at the outdoors through the window.
"You saw a terrible side to me, didn't you?"
"I've seen your good side too."
"That's a lie RK. I haven't had a good side since I lost you."
There was silence in the air for a moment. I knew she was tearing up, trying to control her emotions. I wanted to comfort her, but before doing so, I needed answers.
"Why didn't you yell at me?"
"You stopped me."
"I did?"
"Not directly. I stopped myself. I told myself you had a reason. Why else would you not want me to know who you are? I knew there was a reason for you to hide such a thing."
"And?"
"When you walked up the stairs today, to go pack, I sat in my room, wondering how I could make you stay. I considered taking you up as a lead opposite me in the film, which would make papa have to let you stay. After all, if there's no lead in a film, there's no film, and there's no studio...which means he'd make no money. That's when it hit me. Your promise."
She turned around and walked towards me with tears built up in her eyes. She cupped my face in her hands and smiled.
"You weren't going to tell me who you were until you made it big."
I felt a warm feeling inside, knowing she had figured everything out on her own.
"My Midhi was always the smart one."
I smiled as she smiled back.
"I'm coming with you RK."
"Madhu, that's not a good idea. Won't your parents suspect something? I mean, you leaving at the same time as me."
"I don't give a damn about what they think. You're my Rishabh and nothing can stop me from being with you. They separated us once but I won't let it happen again."
"I only have enough for one month though."
"One month is more than enough time to convince my parents to let you come back."
"Are you sure Madhu?"
"I've never been more sure in my entire life."
Staring down into her beautiful brown eyes made me fall weak. As she smiled up at me, I wrapped my arms around her waist.
"Leaving everything behind for me eh?"
"I love you. I always have and I always will. I know you're probably disappointed in me. Seeing the side to me, which you have. I apologize for that, but I want you to know that I won't disappoint you anymore."
"Madhu, I love you just the way you are."
And with that, I gently placed my lips down on hers. Finally being able to kiss Madhu and have her kiss me back consciously without it being for a film, felt good. It felt real for once. That special feeling everyone gets on their first kiss is something I experienced all over again. I kissed her soft, moist lips ever so lightly, not wanting to get carried away when we had so little time to begin with. I felt her tongue make contact with mine when suddenly a crashing noise interrupted us from behind. Madhu and I instantly pulled free from each other and turned around to face the door. There stood Madhu's mother, with a glass cup lying shattered on the ground around her feet.
