Chapter Eighteen – Run Away
"Madhubala Malik!"
Madhu's mother called her name with such a tone that it even managed to frighten me. I noticed Madhu grimace slightly by my side and then she began walking forwards. As soon as she went to stand in front of her mother, I heard the sound of her mother's hand crossing her face. I wanted to step forwards, to hold Madhu in my arms, to comfort her and make sure her face wasn't aching too much…but I couldn't. I stood still, watching the love my life get slapped not once, but twice.
"MA!"
"Trishna, leave."
I didn't even notice Trishna standing behind her mother until that moment. Trishna had a hand to her mouth but refused to leave. Her eyes met mine for a second, as though pleading me silently to help Madhu, but I was helpless. If I even so much as attempted to help…I'd make matters worse for Madhu.
"This is why you were so adamant. This is why you wanted him to stay?!"
"N…no….ma…"
"Shut up! Listen to me young lady. If your father finds out you've been seeing this homeless man, he won't be happy. So before he finds out, I want you to kick this man out of our home."
"What? No, I can't…n…"
"Now."
I stood stunned. The parents that had dragged her away from me, had not changed one bit. I guess she was being protective though…I probably wouldn't be happy if I had a daughter and caught her kissing a man I assumed was homeless. But that still didn't give her the right to force her daughter to kick me out.
I walked towards my bag and zipped it up as I felt multiple pairs of eyes on me. I picked up my bag, turned towards them, and spoke sternly.
"I'll go myself. Thank you Madhu and Trishna, for giving me a place to stay when I needed one."
"Clearly one of my daughters gave you more than just a place to stay."
"I know I probably shouldn't be speaking now, but I want you to know that this was the first time we were close. Before this, your daughter refused to even speak to me."
"What changed so much that she went from not speaking to you, to kissing you?"
I looked towards Madhu and saw her slowly shake her head no, telling me not to tell her mother the truth.
"I guess that's something you'll never find out."
And with that, I walked out of the room. I was running down the stairs and towards the door when I heard my name from behind.
"RK!"
"MADHUBALA!"
I stopped, turned around, and saw Madhu running away from her mother. My eyes widened but before I could say anything, she grabbed my arm and made us bolt through the main doors. She unlocked her car and as soon as we both sat in, she drove off with no destination in mind. I stared at her, shocked. She looked back with a huge smile on my face.
"That was amazing."
"You're going to get us killed Madhu!"
She shrugged.
"I don't mind dying by your side."
"Don't say that. You're honestly crazy."
"I know. But you love me and that's all that matters."
She smiled as I noticed the redness of her cheek. I gently caressed the side of her face as she drove in an unknown direction. Then I replied passionately to what she had said.
"I do."
