An idiosyncratic analysis of 10/7

Hi there. Here's another one 😊

First things first.... when i see the trailer, the colour of the disgusting liquid is blue (horrible shade) and yesterday in the episode, it was green (equally horribe shade!).... now, i dont think they shot the whole thing scene twice :).... probably played around with the shades on a computer.... but makes me wonder.... if one can play around with colour and light to this extent, how much of the good looks that we go ga ga over are computer generated?.... ab mujhe serious doubts ho rahe hai :) :)

Well the episode began with capt. Rajveer being taken to the infirmary while Abhimanyu almost leaves but returns to finish and win the game.... a continuation of yesterday's scene.... usual and competent.... and when it was announced that Abhimanyu had won, there was a look of determination and a 'i've done it'....but there wasnt any joy.... i missed that.... Gaurav sir ab waapas intense mode pe chale gaye hai.... and i miss the old, less intense Abhimanyu.... kya karun mera toh dil hi kuch aisa hai!

Then of course there was the realisation that something had been deliberately done to get Capt. Rajveer out of the competition.... competent job.... i liked the fact that he makes this tokenistic salute before he goes out, a slaute which is completely devoid of any kind of respect.

Also, i had once had a long debate on this forum about camera and light angles.... and how much they contribute to the way a character works.... for the past two or three days Gaurav is being shot much better.... looks better (computer again?! 😉 😆).... and the camera lingers on his eye movements etc which makes it simpler to appreciate the acting.

Then there was the scene where the various members of the faculty unwind... i will leave the oohing and aahing over Gaurav to people who'll do it much better than me :)... again, i wish they had let us hear the music.... but what i do want to talk about is this.... he is definitely being established repeatedly as an object of a sexual gaze.... which is not unusual in itself, rather is an essential part of acting... but here what i find interesting is that within the show there is no one who directs that gaze on him.... i.e. within the show, he is not an object of anyone's affection.... (even today, the sole viewer is Aalekh -- this show is definitely full of homoerotic spaces).... but to come back, the point i am trying to make is this: the gaze that the creative team is catering to lies outside the show and not within it.... this erotic charge given to Abhimanyu is solely for the camera and those beyond it, i.e. the viewers.... this erotic charge is not for any female character within the show.... and thats what makes it relatively different from sexualised representations of male characters on television.... Abhimanyu's eroticism is an indulgence for the audience, tangential to the plot but very helpful in establishing possibilities for the character and for winning over an audience.

His next major scene today was the one in which he tells Capt. Rajveer that he shall compete with him 'fair and square'.... by the way, i like it when people use idioms, i think they are dying out otherwise, so good work Mr. dialogue writer :).... to come back to the scene, there was a relative lack of expression on his face.... i wondered if it was deliberate.... esepcially since Gaurav has gone off into the intense mode and throwing a challenge is something that can be done in more visibly dramatic ways.... but i liked the restraint.... since it showed that this is still new to Abhimanyu, its still awkward for him being this person.... and it also established that somewhere this is a closed topic.... he's not going to change his mind about this issue.... whether right or wrong, this is how he is going to do it.

Finally, the show was also good today... gripping and fast paced.... is this a new director?.... (i remember reading a post which said that the earlier director was leaving).... if yes, he/she's doing a good job.... if he/she is the same, well, congrats, your mind is back.... 😛

Well thats it for today... see ya all tomo.

I liked the way they let Abhi break into an impromptu dance and not any stupid dance routine....that too when its raining....its usually the females who get to dance in rain in a predictably non-sensual-song &dance routine.

But this one seemed sorta different....and 4 a change it wasn't the hero ogling(thunderstruck) at the rain drenched heronie but poor😉 aalekh and that too @ abhi

And like u said, there is not much of verbal communic these days as nonvbl...esp ppl seem to say a LOT wit their eyes: Raj&Naina.... ofcourse abhi....Yudi(he conveys so much encouragement 2 shalini) and shalini herself of course.... Nair(brooding triumphant villain)

an improvement ovr the shaadi and shoutings that characterized it until a few weeks ago...

Hi, thanks for responding. 😊

Hmmmm.... yes the heroine, usually in a sari, getting drenched in the rain, is a staple of Indian cinema and television.... though in the last decade men to have been represented very sensually, as objects of sexual fantasy.... an example that comes immediately to my mind is of Hrithik in Ek Pal ka Jeena.... for a debut film, he was very deliberately packaged sexually in this song...

As for non verbal communication, that seems to follow Gaurav wherever he goes.... though i agree that in this show its not restricted to him alone.... almost everyone is being given situations that challenge their acting abilities....

I dont quite agree about Nair, though today i thought he was a tad better than yesterday.... and yes this is a definite improvement over the happenings of the previous week. Hope that continues!

hmm i like gaurav more and more nowadays. he is not goodlooking but has an attractive face. those good looks r due that hairstyle. and the guy speaks a lot thru his facial expressions. there is grace in his body moments especially when he is in front of seniors - ah the royal touch i guess. finally the dance - very sensual rarely see male actors being shot in such type of dances - he dances very well. he finds relaxation in music. i don't blame him if he is labelled as a sex symbol - he has all the makings of one - watch the dance carefully and u will see what i mean.

but the best part is he is not villain. and he has now the courage to stand up for himself and raj. he too like raj will not compromise on friendship. as far as the test is concerned abhi thinks raj is the best competitor for him that's why he did not take part in the third test. he will compete with the best to be the best.

I agree that he is not conventionally good looking but once you start finding him attractive, you're done for! 😊 I have been saying from day one that the guy speaks best when not saying anything... thats how i became a believer! 😊

As for male actors being presented sexually, I feel that has been happening for quite some time now.... but yes to do it through a dance is rare.... usually on tv its done through the way a character walks, talks, the entry scene etc etc.... but we do not see it as a sexualised presentation because it is channelised as power, authority (think of how business magnates are usually introduced in shows).... and usually it is tamer, less visible..... but with Gaurav doing it, how would it ever be tame?!

As for sex symbol, can i please add a rider to it... in a very done to death way, want to tag him 'the thinking woman's sex symbol'.... the compliment therefore is not just to him but to the people who like him! Seriously speaking though, i think he can be a sex symbol at both obvious and non-obvious levels.... give him the role of a cop/hitman/assasination agent a la the Munich team, keep him dressed in formals throughout (ie covered up) and he would be even more of a sex symbol than he is here.

As for him not being villain, i repeat that with this show, you never know... but Abhimanyu's unpredictability makes him all the more exciting, so works for him.
