Shveta won't part with her money!
By: Vickey Lalwani
October 23, 2006

Shveta Salve with Longinus Fernandes
Shveta Salve has a 50-50 chance of taking home the Rs 50 lakh prize money in the Sony's dance show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.

The final is on Friday, but will she be kind enough to part with a lakh or two for her choreographer Longi, who has played a key role in bringing her to the final?

In the initial stage of the contest, contestants were unaware that the winner would get such a huge amount of money. But once it became known, they mutually decided that the winner should give Rs 2 lakh from the prize to his/her choreographer.

Sharing the loot

So, the contestants had a meeting amongst themselves. Everyone, except Salve, was willing to endorse the noble gesture.

A source says, "All contestants felt they were well off in life compared to the choreographers. So it would be only fair to share a small amount from their prize with their choreographer. But Shveta resisted. She was not happy to learn that she would have to forfeit Rs 2 lakh."

The usually loud-mouthed Akashh Deep Saigal refused to confirm. He said, "Ab main kya bolu? Main jo bhi bolta hoon, log usko alag level pe le jaate hain. So I am going to be diplomatic and decline to comment."

Rati Agnihotri claimed that she was unaware of such a meeting. Ajay Jadeja brushed it off. But the frank and fearless Pooja Bedi, who has always called spade a spade, confirmed, "Yes, we all met and said that whoever wins, will give Rs 2 lakh to our choreographer. We all sat down together before the first episode began.

In fact, Mahesh (Manjrekar) and Ajay called all of us and we all agreed. In a minute, we all said yes. But Shveta had million questions to ask: 'What? How? What about the tax-deduction?' In the end, she never committed to it."

It's personal

We called Shveta to find out why she had issues with giving Rs 2 lakh to Longi. She said, "I don't want to comment on this. I discussed this
with Mona (Singh) and she too hasn't heard about this.

In the past three months, Longi and I have worked very hard. If I win, I would like to give something to him, but I don't want to disclose it. It's a very personal thing. For me, Longi means more than anybody right now."

Mona or Shveta: The Jhalak verdict

Pooja Bedi: The format of the show is that non-dancers become dancers. So it's very unfair to have a professional dancer winning the contest. Anybody can make out that Shveta is a seasoned dancer.

On the merit of dancing abilities, Shveta should win. But on moral and ethical grounds, it should be Mona. Plus, Mona is a far better human being. Look at her growth curve from the first episode. It's tremendous. I want Mona to win.

Rati Agnihotri: I connected with Mona very well. We used to be there for rehearsals around the same time. She is a very warm girl. I did connect with Shveta too, but less than I did with Mona. An extra yard for Mona. Shveta is a born dancer anyway.

Mahesh Manjrekar: I really can't differentiate. I was there for the longest period of time, compared to the other contestants, so I share an equal friendship with both of them.

Akashh Deep Saigal: I will vote for both Mona and Shveta.

Ajay Jadeja: If I were to cast one vote, I would cast it for Mona. Shveta is a skilled dancer.
So let's support the underdog.

Sanjeev Kapoor is abroad and hence couldn't be contacted.

Shveta's lucky charms

Shveta Salve and Aparna Tilak

She's made it to the finale of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa with her graceful moves. But Shveta also has something else to thank for getting there. The actress has been getting good luck charms in the form of soft toys from her friend and Left Right Left co-star Aparna Tilak. What started as a friendly gesture has now become a weekly ritual.

Slow and steady

Talking about it, Shveta says, "I think it's very sweet of Aparna. I believe in positive energy and love hanging around those who radiate it. I have been taking these toys from Aparna from the first week and I believe they have played a role in getting me ahead in the competition. Along with the endless hours of rehearsals Longi and I have dedicated, I think Aparna's goodwill has also worked in my favour."

Aparna, who is popularly known as Dr Shalini, says, "I remember the first toy I gave her was a tortoise, because it represents 'slow and steady wins the race'. After that, each week I have made it a point to give her the lucky charm on the day of her performance."

Aparna says that despite her shooting schedules, it is important for her to make sure that Shveta gets her furry friends. "I believe luck has a lot to do with getting what you desire. I was the most nervous when Mahesh,
Mona and Shveta were in the danger zone. I remember telling her she's going to make it."

Go green

The results for Jhalak will be out on Friday, so this time Aparna has something special made for Shveta. "I do lot of crotchet work. I have made her a green-and-white pouch in which I will give her the offerings I make to the gods in my house. I think green is going to be a lucky colour for her and she should try and wear it on the result day."

Supporting Shveta, she says, "I think she deserves to win because the show is all about dance. The best dancer should win. You may be popular with the audience, but at the end of the day it's the amount of hard work that matters. I am sure Shveta will emerge victorious on Friday night."

'Greedy and me? What rubbish!'-Shweta

Shveta Salve reacts to rumours that she doesn't want to share her prize money with choreographer Longi

Shveta Salve, who is very excited over the approaching finale of Jhalak Dikhhlaja was stunned when she heard accusation that she didn't want to share her prize money with her choreographer Longi. "Greedy and me? What rubbish," fumes Shveta. "People probably don't know that 20 per cent cash prize has to go to the choreographer. After that, what I want to give him is my business. It more about the kind of equation that I have with Longi than anything else," says Shveta. So, is she ready to part with her booty. "Why just just 20 per cent? I believe that they deserve 50 per cent of the cash prize as they have worked equally hard to make us dance." Shveta says that she doesn't want to talk about the money because she hasn't won the contest yet. "I haven't won the contest, so how can I talk about my plans? Right now, I am concentrating on my dance. I don't want to build castles in the air. What if it doesn't happen?" she says. But have the rumours affected her equation with Longi? Shveta says, "Longi was equally shocked when he got to hear of these things. I don't know what people are going to achieve creating trouble now, when the contest is ending." Shveta is also upset that some of her co-contestants have said that dancing is easier for Shveta than it is for Mona Singh and hence the latter deserves to win. "I may be complimented on my natural ability to dance, but believe me it's not as easy as it looks. I haven't had a complete eight-hour sleep for the past few months. My co-contestants haven't seen me slogging. If I was a trained dancer they wouldn't have chosen me for the show. Should I under-perform just to keep others happy?" questions Shveta. Shveta says that though she was troubled with these rumours she has now got back to practising for her next performance. The actor is now ready to move to the beats again.

Rajeev stands in Shweta's support

Rajeev Khandelwal is all there when it comes to his friends. And his friend circle has the dusky beauty Shweta Salve as the latest entry. Since her dance show Jhalak.. is near it's finale, Rajeev has already started making the most of his popularity to make her win. "Shweta is an excellent dancer and an amazing performer. I watch Jhalak.. to see her dancing. Jhalak... fever is so high on her that I too get some dancing lessons on LRL sets!! That motivates me even more to vote for her and make her win."

Shweta's opinion

Sultry Shweta!!

"Both Rajeev and Aparna and many other friends of mine from this industry have supported me a lot. They have ecouraged me to do better but at the same time their hopes develop the fear of disappointing them in me. Laughing at this Rajeev told me that day Mujhe koi fark nahi padta tum jeeto ya haaro, rahogi to Shweta he naa! That matters. Such words really boost my confidence." Exclaims the actress.

Aparna Tilak

In a time when co-stars compete against each other, are bothered only about completing their scenes and leaving the sets, Rajeev Khandelwal has set a new example on the sets of SAB's Left Right Left.

For a scene, the cadets were supposed to dress like members of a Punjabi family and speak the language. Rajeev whose mother tongue is Punjabi, helped his co-star Maharastrian Aparna Tilak (Dr Shalini) with her lines.

Diction dilemma

Talking about Rajeev's generous act, Aparna says, "I had two to three pages of lines where I had to speak to some one on the phone in a heavy Punjabi accent. I can speak Hindi fluently, but I found it difficult to manage the north Indian accent. Rajeev was around and volunteered to help me out with the lines. I was quite impressed because he was done for the day, and could've left the shoot but he stayed back to help me out."

'He's not like that'

Rajeev Khandelwal

After Rajeev's tips on the right pronounciation and tone, Aparna breezed through her dialogues. She adds, "Some people may find Rajeev arrogant and interfering. But I think it's completely untrue. He works in the interest of the show and every one else."

Talking about another misconception, Aparna says that people believe that she is a doctor off screen as well. She explains that her husband Amod runs his private clinic, but she has nothing to do with the medical profession, "It's quite funny because every where I am called Dr Shalini.

Spot boys and crew members come to me and ask for medical advice." Aparna believes that playing a doctor is a big responsibility and feels she has to live upto her on screen image, "Recently a cadet fainted on the sets and I immediately rushed her to the hospital."

Can you treat me for hairloss?

That's just one of the questions Aparna Tilak has had to face

HARSHADA REGE

From playing a doctor on TV to doing the same off it, Aparna Tilak has done it all. Though the actor isn't a doctor, she often consults her husband with problems that members in the unit of Left Right Left on Set Max come up with. "Recently, a unit member came up to me to ask whether I suggest any treatment for hairloss. And the other day a girl in the unit wanted me to give her a diet that she could follow to lose weight," says Aparna. But why does she have to field such questions? "That's because my husband is a doctor. And when someone asks me something, I call him up to help me out. Now, a lot of the unit members think that I am a doctor like my character in the serial," laughs Aparna.
Aparna recently helped Priyanka Bassi, aka Naina Singh, who complained of pain while shooting for a scene where she had to workout. "When I came on the sets, I saw that she was crying in pain. We took her to the hospital. She was suffering from muscle strain," says Aparna.
And though Aparna has been helping out people in real life, she is looking forward to playing a negative character in Lucky on Star Plus. "They approached me for a positive role, but I really liked the negative one. I have some great stunt scenes in this and I am really looking forward to have people hating me," she says. Aparna says that for any hero to succeed there has to be a villain who's equally good. Aparna says, "But I have never got to play a negative role. I am happy to do one now."

Do Indian men make the best husbands?

Russia's leading feminist Maria Arbatova thinks so. But BT survey reveals only 52.3 per cent of Mumbai's women agree with her, while the rest beg to differ

ROSHNI OLIVERA Times News Network

Indians make the best husbands, believes Russia's leading feminist Maria Arbatova. Why? Because they are open and emotionally attached to their family. "Western culture worships the superman and for an Indian male it is not a shame to cry. They have an emotional relationship with the family," she said in an interview.
But what do Indian women have to say? As per BT poll (SMS-8888), where we asked women readers if they thought Indian men made the best husbands, 52.3 per cent agreed, while 47.7 per cent did not think Indian men made great husbands.

What goes in favour of the Indian man?
"An Indian man would probably make a better husband than a western man because of the Indian mentality where marriage's sacrosanct," says Nishidha Patkar, a marketing manager, as she adds, "He will try his best to make his marriage work because divorce is the last option. That's not the case with men abroad." Indian men are familyoriented, says Shola Mehta, a young housewife. "They've seen their father, grandfather devote time to their families. So they tend to imbibe that value."
Actor Aparna Tilak, who gives Indian men a thumbs up in this context, goes a step further: "Abroad, guys move out from homes at a very early age. With Indian guys, there's a lot of family influence, especially mother's influence. It actually depends largely on how the man's been brought up by his mother."

What goes against the Indian man?

Actor Swetta Keswani, who's dating US national Alexx O Neill, believes men, in general, are hypocrites. But it's worse with Indian men. "Initially they fall in love with you for what you are. Gradually, they want to change you completely because they are insecure." There's also a typical male mindset here in terms of sharing household chores or other responsibilities, she says. "Men expect their wives to do everything, even take their plates in. That's not the case with foreigners." Indian men are also perceived as chauvinistic compared to their western counterparts. "The men here tend to to be male chauvinists and can be extremely possessive," says socialite Ramona Narang, who has an Italian boyfriend. "Of course, Indian men make good husbands but that would depend on how they've been raised. If a man's been brought up well by his mother, he will not be chauvinistic."

Indian men also tend to be mamma's boys. That's another complaint women have. "Being a mamma's boy is fine. But when the mother's influence becomes too strong, there can be a negative impact on the marriage," says Tina Saigal, a businesswoman. "So in that context, I'd say, foreigners are better. They are a lot more independent."

Expertspeak:

Sociologist Nandini Sardesai analyses: "The western woman's expectations are different from the Indian woman. Fidelity, marriage and family are things that are not part of her culture. Therefore when she sees that in a man she appreciates it a lot more. This could be one of the reasons for Russian writer Maria Arbatova's reported statement. On the other hand, the Indian woman's expectations from her husband have always been few. She's been brought up like that. But things are changing. The woman of today who's well-educated and independent in her thinking expects certain support from the husband, not necessarily economic, but in the domestic sphere.
Western women, who've anyway been alienated from their families, do not see a mother-in-law as a threat as much as an Indian woman who's independent in her thinking. That apart, an Indian male who marries a foreigner probably makes more adjustments than one who marries an Indian."

The vegetarian actors in Left Right Left were forced to swallow raw eggs for a particular shot

Kunal M Shah

In their bid to be realistic, the director and the crew of Sony-Sab's Left Right Left is leaving no stone unturned. More recently, vegetarian actors were made to consume raw eggs in milk (egg nog) to make a particular shot look realistic. The shot had Rajesh Khera (Major Bhargava) inflicting punishment on his unit by making them drink egg nog.

Director Anusham Kishore Singh says, "Yes the entry of Rajesh Khera as the strict new Major has brought in many changes in the serial and we are trying to make the depictions very realistic. The first change that he brings about in the serial is he makes the cadets take a hair cut. Then he makes them carry cycles and walk on the mountains. Finally as a disciplinary punishment, he makes all of them including the vegetarian girls to take raw eggs with milk. We wanted it to look as real as possible and so all of them had to drink egg nog. Some of them did not want to be part of the scene for religious and other reasons, but we convinced them otherwise. All of them puked after the scene, but we got an authentic shot."

One such actor was Harshad Chopra who is a Jain but had to consume four eggs due to the retakes. Ghazal Rai too drink an egg only to throw up after the shot was canned. Arjun Bijlani is a non-vegetarian, but even he could not handle drinking egg nog.

Harshad says, "I am a Jain and although I complied with the directors' instructions, I freaked out. I could not believe I had successfully done the scene with four retakes. I started vomiting immediately. I thought I would never be able to execute the scene, but after watching Priyanka, Pooja and Arjun, I was motivated."

Arjun voiced a similar opinion, "I am a non-vegetarian but the taste was revolting. I was glad when the scene finally drew to an end. I wish I don't have to do this ever again in my career span."

Finally, the man behind this Rajesh Khera says, "Why not? I am shown as a strict disciplinarian and I had to do it as per the director instructed. I agree that some of them were uncomfortable but at the end of the day, it went on quite fine."
