Shveta grooves and turns blue!

What price did sultry actor Shveta Salve have to pay for putting in so much of hard work for Sony's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa? A bruised knee!

Recently when Shveta was practicing non-stop on her Rumba number for the upcoming episode, she tripped because of some certain moves and hurt her knee. "It's swollen and my skin has turned blue," she says. But this sassy dancer is still practicing as she puts it, "No pain, no gain" and she attributes her grace to her genes, "I come from the Kolhi family and probably dancing is in my blood!"

We can already envisage her grand mum and mom jiving away to hee pori konachi!

Bereaved' Shveta rocks the party

Shveta Salve
A bitchy co-star from the sets of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa had this to say about the extremely popular Shveta Salve.

On Thursday's episode of the Sony dance show, Salve told the judges that she performed under great stress as her fianc Rodney Barnes had lost his father barely two days ago.

Says the star, "Understandably, Jhalak had to go on. But I was shocked to see Shveta and Rodney at the Sony dandiya party on Thursday night having such a blast.

Anybody who has just lost his dad would not behave like this! So then why did Shveta make that statement on air? For sympathy votes?"

A case of sour grapes? Hmmmm!

When Mehedi Hassan lay down a condition for Ravi Gosain

...it left the TV actor flustered! So what did the ghazal maestro ask for?

GITA HARI

How would you feel if an internationallyacclaimed person put a condition when ask for an autograph? Ask TV actor Ravi Gosain, who recently had an encounter with ghazal samrat Mehedi Hassan at Mumbai airport. Ravi was with his sister-in-law, who spotted the Pakistani vocalist with his family and being a great fan of the singer, she insisted that they get his autograph and picture clicked. Apprehensive about his reaction, Ravi reluctantly approached the ghazal samrat with his request and was startled when Hassan immediately agreed but on a condition –— only if Ravi agreed to click pictures with not only Hassan but also his accompanying family members!
The actor recounts, "Before I could collect my composure, the ghazal maestro told me that my character as Nigodha in Amaanat made me a household name in Pakistan." Ravi mingled with the singer's family and that's when Hassan's son Arif and he decided to join hands professionally as well. "Arif is producing a play, which is the first Indo-Pak venture in the theatre world and I have been cast to act in it," says Ravi excitedly.
His acting assignments apart, not many know that Ravi who trained under a German ballet instructor has been a champion in western dancing and that he had actually set out to be a choreographer or dancer, but he says, "I used to conduct ballet and acting workshops in Osho Ashram in Pune, but as fate would have it, I met with a road accident and broke my leg. I was on crutches for more than a year. Since then I stopped dancing and took to acting." As they say, Que Sera Sera!

Vikas goes left, right and further...

"You are a complete package, handsome and a fabulous actor!" these are the compliments that Vikas Manaktala receives on a day-today basis. From modeling to theatre to TV serials, this Delhite has indeed come a long way in realizing his dreams with 'Left Right Left' (Sab).

With aspirations of becoming a scientist as a kid, then sports after having played in the National level for soccer and basket ball. But deep down, Vikas knew that his first love is modeling and he also hoped to enter the world of acting.

This Jat hunk has no qualms in admitting that he is aware of his popularity among women. It's no wonder then that he gets linked to his co-star Priyanka Bassi who incidentally is also a Delhite. Quiz him about this link up and he brushes it off saying, "That's not true. We are good friends and that chemistry reflects on screen." Ask him why girls find him hot and snap comes the answer, "My eyes and my smile."

Tell him that a majority of the audience watches 'Left Right Left' because of Rajeev Khandelval and he shoots back, "One man cannot hold responsibility for people watching a show. In fact, my fans do call me up and tell me that they watch the show for me. It is a team work, a complete package and credit cannot be given to one person." On a lighter note he adds, "Rajeev is a very friendly and cheerful person. And, of course, he is a good actor too."

This young actor is aiming high and has no desire of doing another serial. He dreams of entering into movies once he is done with 'Left Right Left'. Ask him who he wishes to work with and he rattles off the best names in the industry, "Sanjay Leela Bansali, Rakesh Omprakash Mehra, Pooja Bhatt." Time permitting, Vikas also intends to get back to his first love, modeling.

Sushmita Sen in her flowing chiffon in Main Hoon Na and (inset) Shweta Salve in a similar number in Left Right Left

Seen it before?

The dj vu is not hallucinatory. It's just television directors running short of ideas. Be it sets, costumes or scenes, different frames in serials mirror popular film sequences. Evidently, the resemblance is not coincidental…

Kasautii Zindagii Kay begins as the love story of Prerna and Anurag, but turns into Devdas somewhere along the way. Cezanne Khan aka Anurag Basu is recognisable as the handsome, soft-spoken son of a rich father, while Shweta Tiwari aka Prerna is Paro, who gets married into a rich family and a husband she never loved. Yes, her much older husband has three children from his previous marriage, quite like in Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel.

The Barjatyas draw from their own, and their friends', films. Their serial Pyaar Ke Do Naam-Ek Radha Ek Shyaam mirrors films like Hum Apke Hain Kaun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge et al. Pyaar… shows wedding sequences, complete with sangeet and antakshari ceremonies, that characterise Rajshri productions. Recently, the lead pair Indraneil Sengupta and Barkha Bisht unabashedly put on a Shah Rukh-Kajol (and sometimes a Salman-Madhuri) act.

Shweta Salve of Left Right Left is the middle-class man's Sushmita Sen. Be it the way she uses her eyes or her flowing chiffon saris, psychiatrist Dr Ritu Mishra's character takes up from where Sushmita Sen left off in Main Hoon Na. The serial is a take on life of cadets at a premier military academy, and Shweta plays the muse for the young students just like Sush did so in Main Hoon Na.

Sushama's belt costs sau ki patti
By: Kanika Parab
September 28, 2006

Sushama Reddy, actor
Bargain buy: A metallic, woven gold belt.
From: Roadside shop opposite Elco Arcade, just outside a store called Choice Centre, Hill Road, Bandra
It's a steal because: "The multitude Bangkok maal stores in Bandra stock these metallic belts priced at Rs 1,000. I got it for just Rs 100!" says the model-turned-actor.
I love it because: "It allows me to mix and match my bargain buys with designer clothes. In the picture, my cream trousers are a gift from my sister, Sameera, and the pink top is from New York, again a gift from my other sister, Meghna. Although the belt costs just Rs 100, it adds zing to an otherwise plain outfit," she says.

Shruti Seth, television anchor /actor
Bargain buy:
See-through, black chiffon kurti with dull silver and bronze sequin work
From: A tiny hole-in-the-wall shop located at First Cross Lane, Lokhandwala Market, next to Lokhandwala Chemist, Lokhandwala
It's a steal because: When Shruti was shopping for a friend's sangeet party, she saw similar kurtis at all the big Indian stores. "And they costed nothing less than Rs 2,500," informs the Shararat actor. "This cost me just Rs 500," she says proudly.
I love it because: "When teemed with a pair of formal black pants, you've got yourself a smashing Indo-Western outfit."

Pia Trivedi
, model
Bargain buy:
Silver Kolhapuri slippers
From: Roadside shoe stall opposite Shoebiz, Linking Road, Bandra
It's a steal because: There was a time when Pia travelled abroad, and saw Kolhapuris being sold for an exorbitant sum. "Although they were fancier and mounted on platforms, the basic idea was the same," she points out. So, naturally, when she spotted a funky silver pair for just Rs 50, the model couldn't resist buying it. "They turned out to be quite sturdy too."
I love them because: "They are a chilled-out pair of chappals that don't look out of place on any occasion."
Shveta Salve
, Television actor
Bargain buy:
Beaded earrings with seaside charms (sea horses, crabs, fish and sequins)
From: A jewellery stall in the lane opposite Bandra Book Centre, Linking Road, Bandra
It's a steal because: "First of all, they cost just Rs 40," says the Left Right Left actor. "Secondly, they don't look tacky. In fact, people always ask which store I picked them up from," she says.
I love them because: "They've earned me loads of compliments," smiles Shveta. In fact, she is so fond of the pair that she even sported them on the second round of Sony's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa dance show. "I wore them during my Cha Cha dance."
Dolly Thakore
, Theatre personality
Bargain buy:
A pair of cotton shorts from Versace
From: Fashion Street, Dhobi Talao
It's a steal because: "I got a designer pair of shorts (they are usually original export quality) for just Rs 40. Besides, I wouldn't want to pay too much for something I wear around the house. So, these were perfect," says Dolly.
I love them because: Dolly insists that the label has nothing to do with why she loves the pair. "The cut and fabric make them super comfy to lounge around at home in," she says.
Sagarika Mukherjee
, singer
Bargain buy:
Beaded choker
From: A garage sale organised by Namrata Barua, at Bandra
It's a steal because: "I know my friend Suchitra (Pillai) paid a lot of money for it abroad, and was selling it at the jumble sale for fun. I paid just Rs 50!"
I love it because: "It can lift a plain dress or a regular top, and give it a formal look" says the singer.

Street shopping ka funda

When actor Tanushree Dutta needs an outfit, all she has to do is call her stylist and specify the occasion. "She comes over to my location, complete with an outfit, shoes and accessories," says the actor. But that doesn't stop her from doing the occasional round up of Colaba Causeway. "I believe that there are two sides to buying stuff off the street:
Upside:
It's a lot of fun to go street shopping with friends.
It can be extremely satisfying to bargain for something, and get it at a rock bottom price.
Downside:
Raste ka maal isn't too big on quality.
It is good for one-time wear. I bought cheap junk jewellery from Colaba Causeway's jewellery store outside Caf Leopold. It looked great when I wore them, but in a few days the beads started falling out.

Swetta got phirang boyfriend to add an extra 'x' to his name

But now, she is planning to revert to her original spelling!

ROSHNI OLIVERA

Swetta Keswani added an extra 't' to her name some time ago, but she is now planning to revert to her original spelling. "It hasn't really helped," she says.
But her phirang boyfriend Alexx Oneill will continue to maintain the extra 'x' in his name. Did Swetta introduce Alexx to numerology? "Yes, in a way. He'd come along with me during my meeting with the numerologist and and he decided to do it as well," she says.
Swetta met Alexx two-and-half years ago and they've been going strong since then. So are there going to be wedding bells soon? "We plan to get engaged in February when his mom comes to India. We'll tie the knot some time later."
So, do they plan to shift abroad after that? "We haven't really planned anything. But, I think we'd like to stay here and pursue our careers. Alexx is into outsourcing. He's also modelling for ads and has also done a role in the movie Cheeni Kum. There's a good demand for foreigners in movies," she says, adding that he's trying to learn Hindi right now. "If he sees anything written on a board he attempts to to read it... even on autorickshaws," she laughs.
On the career front, Swetta's busy with an upcoming show Arranged Marriages. "Actually because of my dates for Arranged Marriages, I lost out on Left Right Left and Twinkle Beauty Parlour."
And films are very much on her mind too. "Let's see what works out," she says. About the famed casting couch, Swetta says, "Well, I haven't encountered it. I'm not meeting the casting couch type of directors I guess!"

Nine nights to rake in the moolah

From London to Lokhandwala, TV stars are the biggest draw at dandiya events.

MUMBAI: Dandiya organisers in the city operate on a simple mantra during Navratri —get celebrities at the venue, and the crowds will follow. No wonder then that starlets and TV actors are the busiest, hopping from one venue to another and raking in neat sums for their presence.

Actors Yukta Mookhey, Pallavi Joshi, Ishita Arun and Rakesh Berry along with singers Ila Arun and Kunal Ganjawala were some of the well-known faces participating in the EsselWorld revelry this year.

Industry watchers estimate that celebrities earn between Rs50,000 and Rs1.5 lakh per appearance. "Until a few years ago, film stars were much in demand at Navratri events," said event manager Jignesh Bhuta, who arranged for singers Preeti and Pinky to perform at the dandiya event at Raghuleela Megamall in Borivli. "But TV actors and music video artistes seem to have gained ground now."

So, watch out for the 'bahus' and 'daamaads' of tellydom at 'garbas' in and around the city. What's more, they will be seen at events across the country and abroad. Actors Mandira Bedi, Vikas Bhalla, Sangita Ghosh, Rajeev Khandelwal and Mona Singh, among others, are expected to sway to dandiya beats not only at Lokhandwala but also in London.
"The demand for celebrity performers is higher in other cities and foreign countries as against Mumbai," said item girl Shefali Jariwala. "Here we are hired only on weekends."

Sakshi Tanwar will be in the US and Canada while Hiten Tejwani and wife Gauri Pradhan are expected to be in London. And yes, it is more lucrative to perform abroad, say industry watchers. For instance, Tejwani is reportedly being paid Rs3 lakh per performance, and it is a package deal of Rs10 lakh if Pradhan performs with him.

Urvashi Dholakia and Sangita Ghosh, the star attractions at events in Mumbai, Surat, and Dubai, reportedly charge Rs10 lakh each for five days. Mona Singh makes nearly half of that for the same duration. Singers are also much in demand during Navratri and popular performers like Falguni Pathak, Sonu Nigam, or Daler Mehndi earn up to Rs10 lakh per concert, according to trade sources.

Bollywood too cashes in on the huge crowds that local dandiyas attract. "The shows are now being used to promote films that are coming up for release," said event manager Himanshu Jhunjhunwala. The 'Dandiya Dhoom 2006' at Rainbow Grounds, Andheri, where music composer Aadesh Shrivastav performs live, recently saw actress Koel Purie along with other cast members of her forthcoming film, Mera Dil Leke Dekho.
