Yeah, the last two shows that I did, Director's Special and Saat Phere, ended nearly a year ago. I kept myself busy in the interim with different work. I indulged in a lot of selfenhancement activities and spent time with my friends.
And you bought a house...
Yeah, I did. Actually, I hadn't taken a break from work to set up my house.
I thought I could make the most of this break by buying my dream pad and doing it up my way. I spent quality time picking up stuff for my house.
I went around seeing so many houses before choosing the one I wanted. I couldn't have done that while working.
Buzz is that you were expected to do a show called Taal for Cinevista as a lead.
Yeah, I was supposed to. I even shot a pilot for it. It was a very interesting project. Had it materialised, it would have been one of the finest shows on TV. I was playing a double role in it, but never mind! You auditioned for several roles.
What happened to them?
I hate the idea of auditioning for roles, especially when it's for channels and production houses with whom you've done 200-500 episodes, in a similar look and role. I don't understand what are they trying to find out about us through auditions. Perhaps, they want to find out if we can actually act. Seasoned actors shouldn't be auditioned.
Recently, a production house's casting team calls me and says, "Madam, come for the audition tomorrow. We have to lock the cast. Tell us if you're interested in auditioning though." All this, in a stern voice, sounds so humiliating.
Okay. So, how do you feel should actors be offered work?
They should be just offered work.
Here, they try to 'audition' us, which is not fair, given that we all have a body of work and a long association with the same people.
Did Colors audition you for the negative lead in Laagi Tujhse Lagan?
They didn't. I was surprised because I have never worked with them. They really treated me with respect. They welcomed me onboard with a lot of warmth. By auditioning, you show disrespect towards an actor who has been around and done so much work.
This is not the first time you're doing a negative lead, right? Technically, it is the first time, because when I did a grey character in Saat Phere, Kalika, she became positive subse quently. On this show, I play Kalavati who is a troublemaker in every one's life, from the word 'go'. She's a b**** who does everything in an unreasonable way. She's born a villain and she dies a villain.
I'm sure you had girl-next-door offers too.
Yeah, but for how long can you play those roles? I was fed up of being a good girl. I have done that throughout my shows. Even in Saat Phere, where I was fighting with my elder sister, Saloni, I became a girl-nextdoor at the end of it. The girl-nextdoor characters are sometimes very unreal. Rather move on.
Generally, when actresses take year-long breaks, they return engaged or married.
(Laughs) No, no! I haven't returned married or engaged. I'm still single in that respect. But if everything goes well, you never know, I could be married sometime soon.
