Character Meta's Kumkum Bhagya

So, I know it hasn't been long since I've joined this fandom, but I've been seeing a lot of what I believe is misdirected hate and censure flying around in regards to the characters and character development. Since, I am one of those people who has a really hard time keeping my opinions to myself and of course since I have an assignment deadline looming (which is always when the writing bug bites) I figured I'd share some of my thoughts.

Now I warn you, these are going to be long winded and not everyone is going to like everything I have to say about all the characters. I have zero issues with civil debates though, so if you want to engage please feel free, but let's keep the language clean okay?

Let's take a quick peek at our possible upcoming Character Meta's -

1. Abhi

2. Pragya

3. Suresh

4. Bulbul

5. Purav (still not sure if I'll do this one, the character kind of grates on my nerves)

6. Sarla Aunty

7. Tanu

8. Aliya

9. Daadiji

Now, since I'm a writer and all writers are closet sadists, I'm probably going to want to reserve the top two for the very end. (Aren't I a darling?)

Anyway, ready?

Let's party like a rockstar people!

____________________________________________________________________________

1. Suresh

The wide eyed, nerdy Ekta version of Urkel (google him if you're a millennium-ite who doesn't know who he is) is easily the most unfortunate character on entire show.

No seriously. Unfortunate, unlucky, atrocious timing - you name it.

From the very first episode we see Suresh as an unlikely hero. He's Pragya's knight in shining armor - her best friend, her confidante and man she thinks she's fallen in love with.

Now, notice I say, thinks' instead of is'. I'll go more in depth about this in my Pragya Meta, but for now, I'll just briefly say that Suresh is simply one of those people who is easy to love, especially on part of a realist like Pragya who sees him as the day to day hero that he is.

He's the guy who will stick up for the stranger on the street who was being harassed by a bunch of street thugs, he's the by the book, rule following ex-army officer who came home and kept fighting the good fight, be it against corrupt council men or greedy relatives - he is simply put a good guy.

His only fault being that he fell for the wrong sister.

I mean seriously, ask yourselves -what has Suresh actually ever done that you can hold against him?

He's not the one who went into a rage and took advantage of Pragya's feelings for him, he's not the one who leapt to erroneous conclusions and threw a tantrum - the poor man has quite literally done nothing wrong!

I mean if I absolutely had to say something bad about him I suppose the worst thing I'd say was that he's over-involved and has a bit of a hero complex.

The reason I'd call him over-involved - is simply put because Suresh seriously needs to butt out at times. (cue police station situations). His over involvement is triggered mostly from a sense of guilt - You see, while Suresh never consciously courted Pragya or even knew that she had feelings for him, he still feels responsible, for what her almost-second marriage which ultimately led to her current predicament. For a man who goes around fixing everyone's problems, the injustice that he believes he has basically introduced to his best friends life eats at him. Couple that with the fact that Suresh is still madly in love with her baby sister, and has gone from being the much adored neighbor/son-like person to the person the entire family (with the exception of Pragya) hates with a vengeance that rivals that of the fires of Mordor, and you have one very confused - still trying to do the right this, almost hero.

Faisal Rashid, who currently portrays Suresh is IMO doing a great job, given that he is currently one of the best characters on the show. I mean he's the guy I want to like, but I can't and at the same time he's the guy I want to hate but ...I can't do that either.

For now, this is Advena signing out from the universe of KKB. I hope you've enjoyed the read, as always thoughts are welcome, I will hopefully see you guys soon with another Character Meta. How about I let you guys decide who I should do next...Sound off below!

Love,
A

😆. You can't keep your opinions to yourself. And you have a deadline looming, and you are here 😆. What are you - my long-lost twin or something?

And since you have been brave (or foolish?) enough to ask for our vote/opinion, and since i cannot keep my opinions to myself either (though... i have learnt the hard way to ... at least be more diplomatic about 'em, especially on IF): as far as i am concerned, you can skip #s 4, 5 and 7 with my blessings. Perhaps even #6 - though Sarla has potential which peeps through once in a while. Daadiji now - which one did you mean? Abhi's Daadi or Pragya's? You should do both. The older ladies are atom bombs here 😊. And now you know my vote - hands down - Aliya. She is the most complex, most layered and hence the most interesting character in this show.

Suresh now. Ekta probably did see Family Matters and base him on Urkel. He even looks like him.

Yep, you nailed him. Suresh is not quite Col Brandon (my most fav char in the novel, which btw was a hard one to like after P&P). But he shares some of the Colonel's most honorable characteristics. And he is the everyday hero. Who suffers from both a hero complex and a severe inferiority complex at the same time.

My 2 cents (and as usual, i differ from over 90% of the audience), its Bulbul who does not deserve Suresh. She has no depth. She may be pretty and bright - like a moth. But she does not have the depth of character some one like Suresh needs long-term. (I am no fan of BB's as you can tell. She is no Marianne. But i don't even see her becoming one in the show. No potential in this one).

But - love is blind. And stupid. And Suresh will continue to wallow in it. Continue to make a greater fool of himself. Continue to make himself into the enemy of the very family he yearns to belong to.

👏 👏 👏 You've said it. Finally I'm not the only one who isn't impressed with her. She's no Marianne for sure. She had some potential to be an interesting character, but the writers never really worked on her that much.

Yes! Such a big yes... if I'm going to be absolutely honest Bulbul's character seems like a bit of an Amy - I'm referencing Little Women here I know, but that's the best way I can describe her, I'll get more into her later, but she is indeed exceedingly shallow. What's worse is she isn't necessarily a mean kind of shallow, she is just shallow. She doesn't see Suresh as good enough for her sister initially but when her sister has to walk away from her first marriage then she's suddenly all in favor.

I think what shines through here is Bulbul's inconsistency - which is partially a mark of her immaturity, and lack of actual depth, and partially a nod to how much of a marked difference there is between the sisters. In her own less psychotic way Bulbul is just as petty as Aliya or Tanu - the only difference being in the lines in the sand they've drawn for themselves.

Hello advena!😃
Pretty interesting! First of all thanks for this post! Enjoyed reading it. Will contribute to this as we continue. I am glad that you can't keep your opinions to your self.😆

As Kat mentioned I am also waiting to see your meta post on Aaliyah, the most.

Okay, Coming to Suresh, I must say I liked his character very much in the beginning. He was kind of eccentric, boring character but still there was something in his character which made him quite strong IMO. But after AbhiGya marriage may be coz we didn't get to see him as much, or may be coz he was always coming in the way of the much loved hero Abhi, I began to get kind of annoyed. It continued to grow till I saw his drunken confession few days ago.

He is always known for his saying the wrong things at a wrong time trait and this was one such occasion. But what made this different, was the fact that there was no inhibitions this time. It revealed a lot about the character.

However, I must admit that I don't ship SuBul. Well, at least not till day.

Advena I look forward to read about the other characters. 😛

Diah

Suresh is definitely one of the most underrated character in the show. He's like the puppet who's there only when someone needs his help and left forgotten at a corner when they don't need him. And he is also one of the most disliked character in this show and that's a sad thing. I mean just because he gives importance to being just and right? And also because he speaks his mind and isn't an eye-candy??? He definitely made mistakes along the way and so have other characters. But I find it extremely unfair that Bulbul pinpoint him for not marrying her sister. I get why she finds it wrong to like him. I mean her sister had feelings for him. But she needs to move on from that, because Pragya clearly has.

Interesting thoughts, advena. I think I might just have opposite opinions from yours on just about everything related to KKB, but you express your opinions so compellingly that I'm happy to read them.

As for Suresh - wow oh wow, did I ever get a different sense from him, from the beginning. I get what you mean about Suresh being the everyday hero - he's definitely supposed to be the model citizen, an upstanding and righteous man, etc etc. Did you ever read Georgette Heyer? He's like Venetia's "worthy" suitor - which both is and isn't a compliment.

But from the beginning I've viewed Suresh with dislike and mistrust, in relation to Pragya. Rather than a white night, I saw him as a potential traitor - he was so close to Pragya, which meant he was in a perfect position to hurt her, whether he meant to or not. I never wanted them to get together, and his suppressed longing for Bulbul - which was at first shown ambiguously, so that viewers would think he wanted Pragya - made me suspicious of him.

I have to disagree with you that he's never done anything we can hold against him - going along with his initial engagement to Pragya was a huge mistake. A man of sense would've been honest with his best friend about the misunderstanding. In this case an excess of sensibility - as regards doing the right thing and not causing problems - kept him silent and pretending for far too long.

He's a caring friend and he never meant to hurt Pragya, I'll give him that. But for all that he can fight whatever social justice cause comes his way, and for all that he's willing to butt into others' lives to set things right, he severely lacks courage on his own behalf. What would have me swooning for him would be a stoic and honest confession to Bulbul - I love you, I know you don't want me, but I'll keep loving you, and the choice of what to do with your heart is yours - instead of lurking around her family and hiding his feelings and nursing hurt in his heart in a slimy passive-aggressive way.

I think the writers have been inconsistent with Suresh (well, with everybody, but we're talking about Suresh right now); the way he went along with Abhi's second-marriage farce made no sense to me. I want to ship SuBul or even a refreshed Suresh-Pragya friendship where Pragya could draw strength from her sensible friend, but I'm not finding Suresh interesting or likable now. I don't know how he could recover in my eyes - I've lost respect for him.

And all that being said...I don't dislike him. I want to like him, but as you said...something just makes it so I can't.

My vote is, let's do Purab next. He grates on my nerves too, so maybe between us we can set out all his flaws and come up with what would make him better 😉.

Correct me if I am wrong but Bulbul never really liked Suresh even before the whole marriage drama with Pragya. He too is vain in a way, he fell for Bulbul the pretty sister instead of the good hearted one.
Suresh though is not afraid to speak up, I loved it how he told Abhi off after the mms fiasco.

He is a good guy but not perfect. Though I think he is the better guy than Abhi.

My only big complain about him is the love he helds for the beautiful sister Bulbul. He just proved like alll the other guys he too choses beauty over a beautiful heart but than again he is a man.

finally a post that I like!! I agree with almost everything you said.
Suresh is indeed most underrated character in KKB and I liked him from the start because he's normal citizen when compared with everybody else. His dialogues in the beginning were great. I still like him more than other main leads, for some reason Purab just hasnt been able to impress me yet!🤔
Mina I think reason behind your feelings is because CVs rather than developing his character, have used him as a puppet to be included wherever they need a bit of drama or drag the story. When do we ever get to see normal everyday scenes with suresh? He only appears when hes needed and mostly in the horrible situation which makes us question our likeness of him. And writers have been horrible in writing his dialogues as well, perhaps they only care about other two couples and their love stories!😆

But hey I still like him, call me an idiot for this, but if i like someone from the first day, i tend to stick with them throughout! 😊
