Did they ever explain what it is about Bulbul that Suresh loves? Obviously she's the prettier and more vocal sister, but are those the only reasons? Because she doesn't really have much going about with her. Even with Purab, Bulbul's main concern is her sister. (And funny enough, when Bulbul was recovering from her drowning, said sister was more upset that her husband wasn't helping her out of the pool)

Agreed, he is a bit of a fall guy, although, you have to admit he is a bit too nosey for his own good as well.

Hahahaha, that was a bit of bad writing on part of the writer IMO, Bulbul isn't just concerned about her sister, she is kind of concerned about everything being pretty and perfect in her bubblegum world. Even her sacrifices seem so contrived, I honestly can't get behind this character just yet, which makes me ask the same question in regards to why Suresh fell for her and the answer I land on is because at the end of the day Suresh is Katie Holmes, dying to date Tom Cruise, unaware of what a nut he is. Well until she married him but yeah. Suresh is shallow too - is the moral of the story.

As for Suresh, I started off with a gentle dislike and now I just hate the character.

It stems from the fact that he can't be trusted. There is an inherent trait he possesses that he can't be trusted even if he is doing 'the right thing'. To me, he's a more dangerous friend than enemy.

He's not able to fight for himself nor defend himself. He uses the wrong words at the wrong times and after the drunken rambling incident, he dug himself deeper.

His character is an interesting one however and Faisal is wonderful playing it. He is just too slimy however and I want him to stay away from both sisters, though I know it ain't happening anytime soon 😆

Aww, thank you deefan!

Hahaha, gentle dislike to a roiling distaste. Gotcha.

I think I kind of get what you mean, I don't think he's untrustworthy, but more that he is unpredictable at times, like Aliya is predictable in her bitchiness as is Tanu, Pragya predictable in her Martyr Syndrome, Suresh really is unpredictable you never know with him. Lol as for the slimy bit, I get you he does have a bit of a pedo-face. Sigh. Sad to say, but true. Esp because of the way he went for Bulbul instead of Pragya.

Ok so let me get to the topic...Suresh. Btw just warning that I for some reason like ranting on about Suresh. So bear with me😆

I still remember that I was like "Who in the world is he" when I first saw him in KKB. I thought I would never like him, but after a week or so he started to grow on me. I adored SurYa's friendship, it was so cute. But then aroud the second SurYa marriage, I started to get annoyed at him. But now, I still like his character.

Why?

Well what has he really done wrong? I mean look at the while Arora family praising Abhi like he's some hero, when in reality, he has also done some bad stuff as well to them. On the other hand, Suresh has done a lot. Sure, his timing is quite bad and he isn't perfect. Nor is he eye candy. But tbh, most of the characters aren't that great either. Actually, I feel Suresh is among the better characters.

It's sad to see Suresh being used as then thrown away when not needed. He's not a puppet, but a human being with feelings.

Maybe I'm supposed to be hating him, but honestly I can't. Not saying that I LOVE him, because I don't. I haven't seen his character around much to really love his character. I really don't how to describe how I like Suresh as a character. For me it's almost like, "like" and "empathy" being mixed together.

I probably would be able to really like his character of she was around more. But like Mina Di said,"...the writers only care about AbhiGya, everything else is an afterthought."LOL

Aww, thank you Trish! I'm glad you've enjoyed the Meta, - Sigh It seems we are ties with Purab and Aliya, I'll probably do Purab 3rd since I have nothing good to say about him yet. Sigh. As for your Suresh dilemma YES YES YES - I so agree!! <3

2. Aaliya

Let's be honest KKB isn't the most - layered, deep or profound program. It's a soap opera, a daily none the less which of course means we have insanely stretched out storyline and characters who border on nonsensical at the best of times.

However having said that each show, usually does have that one character that is pretty consistent -well as consistent as you can get on an Ekta show I suppose, and for KKB it's Aaliya.

Aaliya - The Brat - Mehra is the epitome of an Ekta villainess.

She's rich, adored by the oblivious hero and is the baby of the family.

She is also psychotic.

Yep. Cuckooo.

Nutty as Trail-mix.

She is also, quite an unpleasant psycho-bitch. You see, there are two kinds of psycho - the psycho you feel bad for, and the psycho you want to slap so hard their teeth fall out.

Aaliya is the later kind of Psycho. The reason, this particular brand of psychosis is SO aggravating is because, these particular individuals have the unique ability to not only be crazy, but they tend to also justify their crazy in their own little ways.

Aaliya's justification and really the root of her wonderfully pleasant behavior (Note the sarcasm) - starts and ends with one thing - Pride.

Now, since KKB is a Jane Austen adaptation let's go back to Austen for a character reference. Remember Lady Catherine De Bourgh? The crazy Aunt? Aaliya is a cross between Lady C and Mr.Rochester's(Jane Eyre) also delightfully insane wife. She is haughty and proud and expects everything to go her way simply because she decrees it. She is also the, set the house on fire kind of bonkers.

Now, if I had written this character analysis a few episodes ago, I would perhaps tone down my use of the word crazy' and it's synonyms, given recent events however, I feel the need to stress the word.

Aaliya is abso-fracking-lutely insane.

Let's take a detour however and go back to the beginning. Aaliya's very first episode, in fact her very first scene in the show, laid down the groundwork for Aaliya's role in Abhi's life and in the Family itself. In stopping Abhi, from giving Aakash a well deserved beating Aaliya establishes that for all her miniskirts and thigh-length dresses Aaliya Mehra is a typical my-beta-can-do-no-wrong Indian stereotype. Notice how the very first thing she does is not only defend Aakash, but she goes a step further and tries to absolve him of blame, a very traditional and very common s**t-shaming' technique, that is only a step removed from the women ask for rape mentality'. It isn't however this facet of Aaliya's character that is so important in this particular scene though - what is important is the effect it had on her Brother - Abhi.

For all her obvious bias, and for all her self-centered - Regina George attitude, Aaliya is also, as this episode clearly establishes, a key figure in the Mehra household - even if it is only because she is the darling baby sister. Fact of the matter is - her words carry weight.

Maybe not with everyone. But with Abhi. And for that reason alone, she is pandered to.

Now it is impossible to truly delve into this Brother-Sister bond without taking a peek into Abhi's soul as well.

Abhi in a word is starved. He is a Rockstar who is loved by millions and is not loved at all. He is adored by fans and yet he does not know what true adoration is. He is an icon, and yet at the end of the day he does not know what he stands for other than money. He has everything and yet he is moe alone than he has ever been before, because the truth is he is lost and confused. He is a scared little boy who doesn't know who to turn to for help. He is a man who is starved for constants for no matter how famous, and rich and bara' he becomes, Abhi's only constants, are his Daadi, Aaliya and Purab.

Daadi - the woman who raised him. Who took him in. Who took his family in.

Aaliya - His only family. The only bit of his parents he has left to hold on to.

And , Purab - His only confidant. His only friend.

Abhi's bond with Aaliya, goes beyond the simple brother -sister relationship. Aaliya is someone Abhi depends upon, she is quite probably the reason he fought tooth and nail to get where he is - at a place where he could give her everything. Aaliya is Abhi's person. Or at least he thinks she is.

While Abhi sees Aliya as quite possibly the axis of his world, Aaliya herself, either over time or from the beginning chooses ensure that the only axis, orbit and even planet in her little galaxy is her own self.

For you see Ladies and Gentlemen, Aaliya is unrepentantly selfish. Now, maybe her selfishness grew as a defense tactic, to survive the tough times Abhi says they went through, maybe it was always like that - but the fact remains, her single most defining feature is her ruthlessness to ensure she is always protected. And the reason I say she is so consistently written as a character, is because this is a fact that is highlighted very subtly over and over again, during the show - no one is exempt, not her brother, not her best friend, not her daadi. In Aaliya's world the only person who matters is Aaliya - it is what makes her so dangerous, she has no Achilles heel - even her Purab-issues center more around her not getting him, than they do around her actually having any feelings for him. Aaliya Mehra my dear - is the symbolic representation of all those people we know in real life who shamelessly put themselves first - always. They are the people who will make a grab for the biggest slice of cake and the only life-jacket on a sinking ship.

Now selfishness, while annoying is not really that bad a flaw to have, unless of course you pair it with a lack of a conscious, which Aaliya and Tanu both seem to share. Aaliya once a moderately passive nutbar, has recently begun to devolve into a pretty calm, occasionally emotional psychotic person with no fear of consequences. From murder, to acid, to burning people in fire Aaliya is indeed a quickly devolving character not unlike the many Un-Sub's of Criminal Minds. The only question the truly remains is how far she will be able to continue her farce before she is finally called out on current a la mode psychotic nature.

Apologies for the delay and the lack of in-depth discussion, tbh I've been put off of Aaliya quite a bit in recent days, her devolution has been more than slightly annoying. I mean, I was okay with her being psycho, but the acid throwing, murdering spree's have been a bit much, I wish they played around with that a bit making her disagree and then having her conclude it's the only option... anyhow, once again loves, this is Advena signing out from the universe of KKB. I hope you've enjoyed the read, I know for a fact I have adored reading you posts and thoughts which, as always, are very welcome.

I will hopefully see you guys soon with another Character Meta. Don't forget to mention who you want to see discussed' down below!

Love,
A

Alright, I meant to write about Suresh and failed after my laptop and ipad ate my almost finished posts in my two attempts respectively. This time trying on phone, so hopefully I succeed.

You all have covered a bunch of things. I want to focus on Suresh's complexes.

For a first thought- Suresh is the good samaritan kind of guy. No doubt!

But if we look at his personal life, there are complexities.

First of all his love for BB- He claims to love her all along but never expresses it to her. He gets agitated when he has to marry Pragya but he does not take the chance to express the intensity of his emotions to BB, when he gets caught and his marriage to Pragya breaks. Nor does he do anything about letting BB know of his sentiments later on and does nothing about realizing she loves Purab. Why?
Does he feel he is not handsome, rich and young enough for BB? Does he have inferiority complex? (It did show in his drunk speech at Abhi's house during RaBul wedding announcement). Because Suresh never stops from speaking his heart otherwise.

Then, when it comes to Pragya, he wants to be her 'saviour', although he knows he can't be. First he wants to marry her so that she is not hurt/out of gratitude and he wants to marry again during MMS fiasco to save her reputation. In both scenarios he could have played her support at his authority as her bestie. But he displays some level of Messaih complex.

And then comes his issues with Abhi. So Abhi stands for everything Suresh believes as wrong. Yet, Abhi achieves adulation from women, the Aroras and perhaps the whole youth. When it has come to Sarla Maa and Rockstar Daadi, Abhi has received a lot more recognition and love than Suresh although Suresh was more sincere in his efforts.

Naturally, Suresh would feel bad but he does more than that.

Suresh shows his disgrunt about Abhi's concert openly when BB wants to attend it.

Suresh wants to tell Abhi several times that he is lucky to have Pragya.

Seems like Suresh believes Abhi does not deserve Pragya (which is true but Suresh did not know AbhiGya issues initially). But it seemed like Suresh was never happy that a guy like Abhi who does not have 'the good' values ends up being the lucky one.

The peeping through the window act by Suresh at AbhiGya pag phere always intrigued me. It IS creepy. But then Suresh did not seem to be stealing glances at a newly wed romance. But it perhaps again his disbelief that Abhi attained Pragya!

When Abhi gets into drunk-drive case, Suresh crosses Pragya and tries to put Abhi behind the bars. No best friend would do that to his/her bestie's hubby. Again, it is personal for Suresh.

Suresh finds the need to tell Abhi that he could have saved the marriage hall in a different way. He perhaps does not even know that the beating up/jail happened because of corporator's ugly remarks, yet he wants to say something to Abhi.

After Abhi halts PraSu marriage, Suresh is more interested in telling Abhi that he is a nautanki and he will never make Pragya happy. He does not recognize that Abhi did something that he should have done- that is fighting for the truth and standing by Pragya. Nor does he realize Abhi brought his own sister down and also admitted his mistake. But Suresh is rather unhappy that the marriage didn't happen.
Why does Suresh not want a happy life for Pragya with Abhi knowing she loves him? Seems like he is more absorbed in his disgrunt for Abhi than Pragya's happiness. Makes more sense why he would talk to Abhi about 'Pragya's feelings' for him than for Abhi during MMS beat up.

So Suresh has some sort of jealosy or disgrunt complex regarding Abhi.

Suresh to me is an interesting character with complexities and complexes! If only the CVs gave space to the fabulous actor Faisal is!!

Hope this time I can post this long write up, I surely missed some pointers compared to my earlier attempts. Oh well!

Advena loved you take on Aliyah and agree shes getting evil day by day in her obsession...her psychotic behaviour is out of control...but with friends like Tanu who needs an enemy...Instead of helping her she puts oil to the fire..instigates her...

Am not saying all that she has done is good or right...but I do get where she is coming from...The proverb "Hell Hath No Fury as a Woman Scorned" and she was very badly scorned by Purab...

Some women deal with hurt by crying...going in to depression...or with the help of family and friends move on in time...without resentment or even anger...They are ready to Forgive and Forget...

But some do not let go easily...they are not ready to "Forgive or Forget" , they want their pound of flesh to feel vindicated. This kind of behaviour is more pronounced in the person who are emotionally stunted...or under developed...maybe the cause is the way she dealt with the loss of her parents at a very young age...

As fro her taking Akash's side in the beginning...many sisters or family memebers do that even if they are not evil...seeing no wrong in their own family member behaviour and always ready to blame the outsider...

I don't know if I even made sense but...Aliyah needs help..shes crying out for it with her actions...but in our Indian serials...they will never explore Human Behaviour the way it can be explored...they keep on changing the characters personality with the need of the Drama...

They have shown her as head strong stubborn..but not every one who acts or comes of as strong truly is where it matters...Emotionally or Mentally...

First of all - thank you K! I'm so glad you've taken the time to go through and explore the character meta.
Having said that however, for the first time I don't think I agree. I mean once, upon a time - pre all of Alaiya's 'murder' is not an object track - I would have agreed whole heartedly and said yes Aaliya is indeed crying out for help.

But not anymore.

Aaliya doesn't want help. You said it yourself Aaliya wants vindication. She wants to have everything her way, because it is what would be convenient for her. Aaliya doesn't even care about her friends, much less her family. I'll bet if tomorrow all the fall out were to fall on Tanu by accident, she would cut her off in a second and claim she knew nothing.

You see, Aaliya doesn't forge connections, only people who forge/have connections actually reach out or call out for help. Aaliya's behaviour is very different - she is detached, uncaring and unfeeling. And up to this point I see no reasoning for her being the way she is - I get Mithali, I get Neel, hell I even get Tanu - but Aaliya is an enigma. I want to say something awful happened to her, that made her the way she is - but then I look at Abhi - and I am forced to admit that with the two of them being raised together, in the same circumstances, what would result in Aaliya not merely being so detached, but manipulative enough to mask her detachment with caring to get her way.

To a level, even that is excusable. But ever since the acid throwing episode, I am just done with her. So done. This girl display's all the symptoms of a sociopath and up to this point has not been shown to have a single redeeming quality I would forgive any of it for.

Trust me - I wanted Aaliya to have depth, the best villans always do - but Aaliya isn't a villain - she is a coward. She is a coward who is to scared to face the world on it's own terms. Being stubborn or pretending to be strong is great, it shows character depth and it tells me there is something more to her. But I can't remember ONE scene where Aaliya has genuinely been hurt - except that scene with Abhi, post the Almost-Suresh wedding.

That one scene - I loved. I loved the acting, the rawness of it - everything, but ever since instead of fleshing out the character the writers have been feeding us a steady diet of tripe that makes me want to smack Aaliya and tell her to learn to deal.

Sigh - i'm ranting again - sorry!! But this character had so much potential and is now so UGH - that I can't help it!
