CHAPTER 12
MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL
WHO'S THE PRETTIEST OF THEM ALL?
Tanu had been noticing ever since Rachna's engagement that Abhi seemed more and more disinterested in her. She wondered why? He was the same Abhi who kept whining about how she didn't have time for him, he was the same Abhi who would keep trying to make time for her, to surprise her, make her laugh. But take the whole last week for example, Tanu was home early every single day - but Abhi had locked himself in his studio. What had happened? She remembered how longingly Abhi was looking at that Rachna's bhabi Pragya the other day, she also remembered how easily he had trusted that Pragya even over his own sister - was there something to worry about? She was a little disturbed. Her logic told her she should worry but her ego told her, it must be something else. She was super model Tanu, she was every man's dream. So, the man for whom she was reality, how on earth can his attention waver from her?
Tanu had called Aaliya and explained her worries. Aaliya had just shrugged it off saying, Tanu was late in noticing, but her bhai's lack of interest in her life wasn't new anymore. Abhi had tried for the first whole year and had slowly given up after that - he showed no interest in her - but Tanu was so busy, she didn't notice it until now. Tanu relaxed a little, at least it had nothing to do with the beheji bhabi of Rachna's. But still, Tanu instinctively didn't like Pragya.
CAUGHT OFF GUARD
The other night when Suresh came home so late from Aakash's bachelors, Pragya was surprised. She was even more surprised to see him so drunk. She had tried to guide him to the bedroom, but Suresh was in no mood to sleep. He sat on their bed and spoke to Pragya.
Suresh - You know that Abhi? He is not such a bad guy.
Pragya stood still in her spot. She was completely taken off guard.
Pragya - I thought you hated him.
Suresh - Well, not anymore. We spoke for a long while, over drinks today. He is nice. And yes he loves his wife, that super model. Today he was telling me how they met, he sounded like his relationship with her is not going well. He seems to be in a dilemma, he doesn't know whether to hold on to her or let her go.
Pragya was still standing there still as iron; She knew not why her eyes were filled till the brim. Abhi still loved Tanu. He still missed her, this made her heart ache, and she immediately told herself she was feeling bad for him that's why. But some deep corner of her heart knew why she was aching within.
Suresh - Pragya, what is the real reason for you not wanting the baby right now? Am I too late?
Pragya slowly turned to face Suresh. She knew he had seen through her carefully knitted mesh of lies. She considered for a second whether she will carry on the lie or not, then she said, "Not tonight Suresh. Goodnight".
DESTINY'S MISCHIEF
Abhi woke up in the morning to see three missed calls from daadi's doctor. He was alarmed, why was he calling him so urgently? Was something wrong with his daadi's health? He hurriedly called back to find out the doctor had called to inform that he hadn't seen Mrs. Mehra's medical report this month at all, he called to remind them to bring it. Abhi was puzzled. Hadn't he told Aakash to take them to the doctor? He called for Aakash immediately. On arrival, Aakash scratched his head for a bit and then remembered. He told Abhi that the day he had gone to the doctors, that was the day when he met Rachna there and ---- after that it had completely escaped his mind. He apologized for it and offered to take the reports that day again. But Abhi said, he would take care of it, and Aakash should just take care of Rachna for the time being as today was their wedding day and he wouldn't want her stressed out. Aakash smiled and left.
Abhi went to the hospital with his daadi's report. Being a V.I.P he never needed to wait, but as fate had it, the doctor was on an emergency call. He was due in fifteen minutes. Hence Abhi decided to wait in the separate room allotted to him by the administrative staff to give him privacy. It was basically an open chamber where he waited. Abhi was sitting and absent mindedly staring at the door opposite, it was a gynaecologist's chamber. Suddenly he saw a familiar looking woman come out from that chamber. She was wearing a lime coloured anarkali suit and was holding a file in her hand, as she smiled radiantly. Chashmish' Abhi muttered as his stomach did an unhealthy twist. Pragya didn't see him, and as she was coming out, Abhi heard the doctor call from inside, "Don't worry Mrs. Mehra, the baby is fine! And Congratulations once again!"
Abhi dropped his files from his hand, they landed on the floor with a soft thud. Pragya turned around to locate the source of the noise and she saw him.
Pragya - Abhi? What are you doing here?
Abhi could look up at her at that moment. It was too much for him. No he couldn't look into the eyes of the mother of Suresh's child. At that spilt second whatever he felt, no words could ever capture. He was shocked, hurt, angered, jealous, sad, shattered, broken and devastated to name a few. And from that anger came a response he regretted the moment it escaped his mouth.
Abhi responded while collecting his files and not looking up - Hi chashmish! I came here to meet the gynaecologist. You know Tanu and I have decided to have a baby finally. So just came with her reports. Wish me luck!
Pragya's mouth dried. He remembered Suresh's word from last night, he was facing indecision with Tanu, seems like he had made the decision after all - of holding on to her, because he loved her so much. But these didn't go well with Pragya. She was suddenly very agitated. She hated the smell of medicine hovering around her in the hospital for instance, she also hated the pale green colour of the walls in the hospitals, the nurses looked unfriendly and it was so hot in here! She suddenly realized she had tears in her eyes and she hated Tanu more than anyone she had ever hated in her life.
As she stood there silent, time flew by but neither she nor Abhi realized it. Both were trying to recover from their private shock. Finally Pragya mustered herself together and responded.
Pragya - Oh Congrats Abhi! Daadi will be very happy for you.
Abhi - And you?
Pragya - Me? I - I really have to rush.
