CHAPTER 13

THE REBOUND

As Abhi reached home from the hospital, he seemed to be in a trance, which never broke when Aakash asked him if daadi was fine. He mechanically replied, she was and went away. Aakash stared at him as he walked away, and for a moment considered asking him what was wrong, but today was a very busy day for him, the pre-wedding preparations were going on full swing, so someone called him and he had to go.

Abhi reached his bedroom to see Tanu come out of their dresser, decked up for the afternoons ceremony. She saw him and was saying something, but he never heard her. Instead he cut across her mid-way.

Abhi - Tanu, how important is this marriage for you?

Tanu - Huh? What---hmm..it is very important Abhi, why do you ask?

Abhi - I want your time, more of it - you think you can manage that?

Tanu looked at Abhi curiously and read his sombre face. She realized, whatever this was about, it was very serious. So without taking any risk, she managed to say a yes'.

Abhi - Tanu, it is high time, I want a baby. And I want it soon, not after a few years.

Tanu - Abhi do you realize what you're saying? I mean respecting daadi's wishes are one thing and taking it to this new level is different. A baby? Are you serious? Look at me Abhi! I am a super model! Not some sluggish bodied woman whose aim in life is motherhood!

Abhi - I just want to hear a yes' or a no'.

Tanu was infuriated at the proposal and to top it, was Abhi's insistence. He was never like this, he always ended up agreeing to Tanu's whims. She couldn't see why he was being so persistent! Maybe it was daadi who had brain washed him thought a loathsome Tanu. But in no way was she going to give in to this pressure and that was for sure!

Abhi on the other hand didn't even know why he made such a demand. He hadn't even thought of babies until today morning, and he knew it that Tanu wouldn't be ready. He wasn't even sure if he was, but ever since he heard the doctor congratulate chashmish, his head wasn't functioning right! He felt cheated, he felt alone, he wanted to be at par with chashmish, if she can move on with that double battery and forget him so easily than even he can!

Tanu - That's it Mr. Abhishek Prem Mehra, that is it! I have listened and paid heed to your daadi's random whims so far! She wanted you to get married, and in spite of having a super successful career, I had to cancel a few exorbitantly pricey contracts to marry you. My fame fell consistently. I never got that movie break that was just round the corner. You know why? Because I was married! Did you hear me complain? No, I didn't, I respected your daadi's choice. Then after the wedding, your daadi had a problem with me endorsing lingerie, hence I stopped that, again I lost a few contracts there, I struggled without complaining, and now when I got to sign the contract with such a big MNC for being their brand ambassador, you want me to dishonour that too and become a mother? Come what may Abhi, I am not doing that!

Abhi looked at Tanu calmly. Whatever she said had no impact on him whatsoever. It was partially because, he knew, Tanu hadn't really made those compromises she mentioned and partly because right now he wasn't even interested. His demand was not out of love for Tanu or interest in the marriage; hence her rejection didn't bother him. With a heavy heart he just realized, his marriage with Tanu wasn't going to work anymore, their time was up - it was up long back, but he had no reason to call it off - he wasn't sure if he had a reason even now, but still he couldn't take it any further.

Abhi - Very well Tanu. In that case, I will not hinder your career any further. You are free to take up whatever contract you want. You can endorse as many lingerie brands you want, you needn't have a baby, BUT, you can do all this after our divorce verdict is out. Yes Tanu, this is it, I want to call this off.

As Abhi walked out of the room leaving a stupefied Tanu behind, he heard her call his name behind him. Abhi ignored it and walked away. He realized, maybe Pragya was capable of forgetting him because to her he was a good friend, but even Abhi didn't know from when, but Pragya was much more that a friend to him. He liked her, craved for her and yes intensely loved her.

THE PROFESSOR WHO KNEW

Pragya reached an empty house and she was glad. It was Rachna's wedding that evening, Suresh must be in the wedding hall arranging and preparing, and her mother-in-law must have taken Rachna for some rituals. She was glad she was alone. Her head was pounding. How could Abhi plan a baby? Wasn't he unhappy with Tanu? How could he want a child in their already non-functional marriage! Why involve a child and make the child suffer? What was Abhi thinking? From whatever she knew of Tanu, she wouldn't be interested in having a child so soon then how did Abhi convince her? Was everything all right between them? And if that was so, why was she upset? This was what she always wanted right? A tiny voice in her head asked a sly question, why was she agitated? Was it really for the welfare of the child, or was it because, it will bring Abhi to Tanu in such a way that he will be very very distant from her. To her dismay, Pragya found tears in her eyes and this further irritated her. She was sick of all this, a husband who didn't love her but wanted to have a family with her, who would in all probability never love her, but will feign that he does for the rest of her life, a friend who was her constant source of happiness, but because of a weak moment between them, was distant from her, the friend who was soon going to have a baby and be so distant from her, a sister who was blissfully unaware of her (Pragya's) husband's feelings for her (BB). Why was her life so complicated? She wished she could run away from all this, but she was answerable to her mother too, hence she couldn't afford that luxury. As Pragya sat on the couch thinking all this, Suresh walked into the apartment.

Suresh - Arre Pragya, you have returned? Did you invite the doctor and show her Rachcho's latest report?

Pragya - Yes. The doctor said the baby is fine and healthy, she changed one medicine and also noted the soon to be change in Rachna's marital status, so that in the child's birth certificate, it mentions Mrs. Rachna Mehra and not Ms. Rachna Rastogi in the space provided for mother's name.

Suresh - Great, finally my Raccho's life is settled. She found the love of her life, and she will be happy.

Pragya was quiet, she didn't respond. Suresh sighed.

Suresh - Pragya, are you okay? Is something wrong?

Pragya - I am fine.

Suresh - See Pragya, this is the distance between us I fear. After that night's incident, I seem to have lost the friend in you too. This is why I wanted a child Pragya, the child would help us rebuild our bond Pragya.

The mention of her and Suresh's child struck Pragya on the last chord, she struck back this time, with uncanny coldness.

Pragya - Ah, the baby. But before that, lets order in lunch today? Will you order in my favourite food?

Suresh was taken aback, but he recovered.

Suresh - uh..sure Pragya, tell me what your favourite food is, I will order.

Pragya - Arre, the same as BB

Suresh - Aah butter paneer and kaali daal. Okay, I will order.

Pragya - Order it from my favourite restaurant too?

Suresh - Which is?

Pragya - Ditto BB.

Suresh laughed and placed the call. While on the call,

Suresh - Would you like jal jeera with a dash of pudina in it too like BB?

Pragya came close to Suresh, took the phone from him and cancelled the entire order. Suresh looked startled. Pragya sat on the couch next to him, she was calm and composed.

Pragya - My favourite food is daal bati and I like lassi, this is not even my favourite restaurant.

Suresh - Then why did you say you like what BB does? She doesn't like all this?

Pragya - Precisely my point. I am married to you for more than two years now, and you don't know these small details about me? You don't know your wives favourite dishes, in spite of the fact that she was your best friend for the longest period of life, yet you know BB's taste by heart? As far as I remember, she never even shared one meal with you! You see Suresh, that is love, you needn't have spent enough time with the person but you crave to know, you like knowing about his/her likes and dislikes, you remember them. Suresh you still love BB. You have wasted my life, why do you want to have a child in this comprised relationship? The child will have a loveless childhood, because his father loves his maasi----

Suresh - ----and his mother loves a reckless rockstar!

Pragya went limp. She lost track of her thoughts. Suresh had said what she didn't dare allow herself to even think. He said she loved him. There was stunned silence between them for what seemed like an hour. Slowly Pragya realized that whatever there was between Abhi and her, even though it wasn't purposely hidden from Suresh, but it was hidden all the same. And now Suresh has come to know about it. Her head told her she should be guilty, but her heart refused to feel so. Suresh continued.

Suresh - You really think I wouldn't know Pragya? You think I am dumb? I don't know that Tanu doesn't drive a scooty? And I wouldn't notice that you do? I wouldn't bother finding out if you had visitors in my absence after knowing how big a bas***d Abhi is? You think I wouldn't know how he carried you back to our house when you were pitch drunk? You think I wont be told?

Pragya - You set people to spy on me Suresh? That is the faith you had?

Suresh - No Pragya I hadn't let people spy on you, and I regret not having done that. But after Aakash's bachelors eve with Abhi, I went back to our building security guards and back checked.

Pragya - You got the guards involved in all this?

Pragya was screaming in shock now. You are such a lowlife Suresh! You could have just asked me!

It was Suresh's turn to scream.

Suresh - Ask you what Pragya? Ask you whether you are sleeping around with someone else? Ask you how did you become so shameless? Ask you why were you cheating on me? No Pragya I couldn't stoop so low! In fact, instead of blaming you, I started rebuking myself! I thought I pushed you so far that you left me. I didn't blame you Pragya, in spite of your infidelity I didn't blame you. I found it in me to forgive you! I wanted the baby because I thought that was the only way left to consolidate the marriage! And all this while I wasn't thinking of BB Pragya! But you couldn't think of anyone but the rockstar! Here I was trying to save our marriage and there you were texting him that you didn't allow me in your bedroom! And when did you allow me in your bedroom? When Abhi convinced you to give this marriage a shot! Pragya are you that blind? You are trying to work this marriage because Abhi wanted you to, not because of you or me! And do you know why he wants you to work it? Because he would never leave super-model Tanu! She is his trophy wife, he will always be hers for society and all he wants from you is to share dirty bedroom secrets behind everyone's back - he wants you for a mistre---

But Suresh couldn't continue any further, Pragya had lost all restraint and landed a hard slap on his face. Pragya was in tears and strangely not guilty.

Pragya - So, Mr. Husband, you seem to know a lot, yet you know nothing! Yes we did meet in your absence, but it was nothing more than a coincidence, yes we met many times after that and spent quality time together. You know why? BECAUSE OUR RESPECTIVES PARTNERS HAD OTHER PRIORITIES IN LIFE. My husband loved my sister and his wife loved her career. We both were lonely. The world thought we both had a cosy lovely life, but reality was we both were burning under the sun in the desert of life without a drop of water or an inch of shade. Yes, we were close. We found a friendship that filled the hollow within us to a certain extent, but we knew out limits Suresh! And what did you know? I will tell you the truth! Yes there was a weak moment between us and we were close - No we didn't sleep with each other, but we kissed - but you know what Suresh? In spite of realizing we both have found the long lost happiness in our lives due to our respective spouses, we decided to part ways, so that we could work on our respective relationships. YES SURESH, IN SPITE OF LOVING ABHI, I CHOSE TO COMEBACK TO YOU! Fully knowing you will never love me, fully knowing my life wont get better, you know why? Because I am your wife - there lies my chastity. And you think you know MY Abhi? You think so dirty? You think he wants me as a mistress? No Suresh, he doesn't! In fact to ensure that he doesn't come in my life and hamper our relation, he has gone back to accept Tanu and you know what? They are planning a baby now! That is Abhi for you! It is me, I cannot imagine having a baby with you, and truly my primary reason is not because I love Abhi, but because I genuinely don't want to give birth and raise my child in such a loveless nest as ours.

What is the point of raising a child with me Suresh, it would be an incentive to be with me? Are you doing me a favour Suresh? Or is it because, since BB is already married, and she cannot ever be yours, you would rather compromise with me and make your life comfortable then live life alone? And don't look at me like that Suresh, what else do you think I should deduce after hearing all that you had to say? You are saying you were under the impression that I was sleeping around with Abhi and inspite of that you wanted to make love to me for a child all these nights? If you knew all this while I love him, not even for once you felt you're forcing yourself on me? Are you that desperate Suresh?

Suresh stood their while silent tears rolled down his eyes. He realized whatever Pragya had owned up before him today, until today she hadn't even owned these up before her ownself. Today probably for the first time she realized she loved Abhi, but it was too late. But even if it was too late, Suresh knew Pragya enough to know it was to late to reconcile their marriage too. He and Pragya both were late. He was late for Pragya and she was late for Abhi.

Pragya sighed heavily, and after a few minutes said that it was time they parted ways. She realized she hadn't ever thought about her and Abhi in this way, but today when she did, she realized there was truth in what she said. Maybe Abhi had found his life with Tanu, but she had fallen in love with him, and she wouldn't continue with the burden of a dead relation when in her heart she had someone else. It was time to call off wifely duties with Suresh and move on. Maybe she will be alone, but Abhi will always remain in her heart.

Pragya - Suresh, after Rachna's wedding and her reception, I will move out of this house. You can tell Madhu ma that my mom isn't well I need to be with her for sometime. And post Rachna's delivery we will break it to them - the news of our separation.

BULBUL FINDS OUT

BB had just finished her lunch quickly; eager for the wedding in the evening when the door bell rang and Pragya came in. By one look at her di's face, BB feared the worst. Pragya looked like she could faint any moment - she repeatedly asked her sister what was wrong. Pragya was quiet - she quietly sat by BB on the couch as tears leaked down her eyes.

Pragya - BB, Suresh and I have called off our marriage. I will move out of his house after Rachna's reception.

BB was shocked beyond her wits.

BB - Di, what are you saying di? Why on earth would you do that? What happened di? You both were so much in love - there must be some misunderstanding between you two. Please don't take such rash---

Pragya - No, there is no misunderstanding between us. I love Abhi.

BB - What??? Di do you even know what you're saying? Di? Abhi? When? What? How? Di he is married! Di, you are married! Di this is absolutely unfair on jiju. Di, jiju loves you! He adores you, and you broke his heart? Di how did you become so ruthless! Does Abhi know? Di he is married to Tanu, I know their marriage is on the rocks, but you? Di what the hell is going on? Di, I wont let you do this to jiju...

Pragya - BB Abhi loves me yes, but doesn't want me. He is trying towork his marriage with Tanu. BB can I rest a little in your guest room? I will get ready from here and go for the wedding with you and Purab, is that fine?

BB stammered at this information - Ye---yes di, please take rest, we will talk about this later.

As Pragya left, BB stood transfixed. What had just happened? Her di loved Abhi? And knowing her di, hadn't this been absolutely genuine she would consider talking about it in the open or even breaking up her marriage! When did this happen? And Abhi? What did she mean Abhi loves him but wants to be with Tanu? She couldn't let Abhi's random whims dictate her sister's life! She was going to see to it that she gave Abhi a piece of her mind, she would let her di destroy an innocent man like her jiju's life.

When BB urgently called Purab and Abhi home post lunch, both were surprised. There was a wedding to attend in the evening, why was BB insisting that they both went to meet her right away. Did it have anything to do with Aaliya? They both rushed home to see a tear stricken BB looking accusingly at Abhi. Purab was startled.

BB - Why Abhi? Why my di? I considered you a brother! And you destroyed my sister's life?

Purab - BB what are you saying? Pragya di's life destroyed? Abhi did it? What is it.

BB narrated whatever Pragya had told her and looked threateningly at Abhi. But Abhi was too startled to answer them. Yes, he knew he loved chashmish - but since when did chashmish love him back? And if she did, how was she carrying double batteries baby? As irritation and anger boiled inside him at the mere thought, he realized BB and Purab were questioningly looking at him.

Abhi - Yes BB, I do love Pragya, but Pragya---

BB - Exactly, you love di, BUT di cannot be yours right? Because you are married to super model Tanu and however difficult she is to live with, she is a trophy wife you cant discard! She is your status symbol, your success symbol, how can my di replace her! Actually Abhi, I don't care why you want to work your relation with Tanu, but all I ask is why involve my sister in this mess? My di isn't so complicated Abhi, she has hopelessly fallen in love with you! She doesn't understand your dynamics, she doesn't realize your true intentions! She has broken up her marriage with my jiju for you.

BB's reference to Suresh as her' jiju irritated Abhi, it felt like, it was BB's way of showing him how clode Suresh was to chashmish, he hated it. But BB continued.

BB - Abhi my jiju is a man of integrity. He loves di, his world will end if di leaves him. Why did you have to destroy my di's house Abhi? How did you make my di such a listless, heartless, characterless -----

Abhi - Just shut up BB, you can't talk about Pragya that way - she is your sister! She is not heartless or characterless - jeez how could you even think of her that way - you're her sister, the sister she can smilingly take death for!

BB - Exactly! That is how my di is, what have you done to her? She is so firmly standing to her decision of ruining my jiju's and her life! You and Pragya di don't have any right to destroy mu jiju's life like this - what did you think? You will convince her to rip apart jiju's life and then turn my di your mistre----

Abhi - BB one more word and I will forget you're Purab's wife or Pragya's sister.

Purab - Bhai what the hell! Where is BB wrong in this? If there is anyone wrong here, it is you and Pragya di! Not BB or Suresh bhai! Pragya di is an angel bhai, how did you convince her for such heinous thing?

Abhi had had enough. He tried digesting the fact that chashmish loved him, but that could wait! Here these people were tarring his chashmish's name and image, at the cost of sparing Suresh's heart? Did Suresh deserve this generosity? And how could chashmish break Suresh's heart, she never had it. Abhi initially thought he will protect Suresh's truth for chashmish's interest. But when all the blame was going to chashmish and she was held responsible for this mess, Abhi got infuriated. True in spite of all she said, he cared for BB, and didn't want to hurt her, but if that meant hurting chashmish, he wasn't up for it.

Abhi - Purab, BB, I don't want to play the blame game here. The fact lies that Pragya and I love each other and we are not at fault, we haven't harmed anybody's interest and Suresh is not a victim here.

BB - You have ruined my jiju's marriage and broken his heart and you think you and di are not at fault - --

Abhi had lost it at this point - Yes! In spite of that I think we are not at fault and Suresh deserved it, and if there is anyone at fault at all in all this it is Suresh himself and without realizing it yourself maybe even you BB!

Pragya had slowly come down to the hall hearing all the shouting and when she reached the hall she shrieked hearing Abhi's revelation.

Pragya - Abhi! NOOO.

There was stunned silence in the room. Purab looked confused, Pragya looked horrified, Abhi looked angry and one could see death in BB' eyes.

On repeated pleas of BB, Pragya had to eventually spill the beans and tell her about Suresh's feelings for BB. BB shrieked in pain, as she realized all this while as much as she avoided, she was the constant source of pain for her di. Purab looked outraged and Abhi looked at Pragya apologetically. Pragya just stood there faintly.

BB after learning everything, turned to Abhi - Abhi I don't know what you two did are right or wrong anymore. Yes you both are married so it maybe doesn't seem right. But you both were suffereing and both you're partners care so less about you that somewhere you are justified. I don't know what to say- I feel to shallow.

Then she turned to Pragya - Di, I am sorry di. I should have trusted you di. How could I think so vile things about you di? Di, I promise to stand by whatever decision you take. As far as Suresh is concerned, e deserves no one's sympathy. If he couldn't control his feelings than why did he marry you? Who gave him the right to destroy your life di? And for the last two years you have been taking all this silently just for me di? Why do you love me so much, di? Why? And that Suresh - I will kill him!

Purab - BB calm down, not now! It is late, we had promised to help daadi today for the wedding preparations nah? We have to go. Rachna and Aakash are no where at fault here, their wedding mustn't suffer. We must go before things start getting suspicious.

BB - But Purab, how can I leave di and go?

Purab- Don't worry for Pragya di anymore BB, my bhai will bring her to the venue once she is a little more sorted. BB having heard all this, from an objective point of view, there is no one better suited for my bhai in this world than you di and I guarantee you, if they decide to be together, bhai will be the best husband for your di. They are made for each other. Now let us not wait here. Let us leave and give them time to decide what they want from hereon. So when they walk out of this house, they know where their destiny lies.

Purab smiled encouragingly at Abhi and BB hugged Pragya and they left in a bit.

DESTINY'S CHILDREN

As BB locked the door behind her and left, Abhi turned to Pragya. She was looking stressed and very pale. Abhi's eyes reflexively found her stomach. Then he looked up to her eyes. She was tear stricken and tired. He reached her and gently held her hand.

Abhi - Sorry chashmish, I didn't want to stress you. I know stress is not good for you right now but when they accused you I lost my cool and told them about Suresh's feelings for---

Pragya - sshhh. Abhi, all that can wait, but not what I want to tell you. Abhi---

Abhi - Shoo chashmish! I want to say it first---

Pragya - Acha? You want to say it? What happened to your feelings when you went family planning with that bamboo stick?

Abhi half exasperated and half smiling - Bamboo stick? Honestly chashmish, a raisin like you complaining about a bamboo stick?

Pragya - That is not the point---

Abhi - But on a more serious note chashmish, I was lying. I couldn't bear to be left alone by you. I hadn't made any family planning with Tanu till then, but when I heard about your pregnancy there---

Pragya - But Abhi ---

Abhi - Please let me finish chashmish. Yes, when I heard about your pregnancy there, I lost control on myself and did go and ask Tanu if we could start a family. But as expected, she declined and started to count of all the so called sacrifices she made. With each mention of her so called "sacrifice" I realized how wrong Tanu was for me. We had different priorities in life, and she never valued my priorities. I couldn't continue to be with her chashmish. I called off our marriage only today. I didn't know whether you had feelings for me or not, but my feelings for you were enough to keep me away from her. And chashmish, I am sorry for over reacting that way and lying about my family planning with Tanu. It's just that when I heard you are pregnant, for sometime, and I will tell you this honestly, my world collapsed. I felt you have gone very far away from me. And I couldn't bear it. But chashmish, I promise I wont ask you under what circumstances you agreed to have his baby, but whatever be your reason, I am glad that you have conceived, in a strange way this baby got us closer. Chashmish if you call it quits with Suresh, I promise, I will give this baby my own name. For me, if the baby is only half yours, it is enough for me to love him/her, it doesn't matter who his/her biological father is, I am the father and the baby got you and me close. Chashmish, having said all that---

Pragya - Uff Abhi you talk a lot! Now listen - I love you. Hah. I said it before you!

Abhi stood there quietly as he saw an innocent childish grin spread across chasmish's face, as she laughed for beating him to saying it. He smiled and for once his whole being smiled together with him. With chashmish's hands in his he felt complete. No parts of him were missing now.

Abhi - Chashmish, you're the most beautiful woman in my world. I need no reason to love you, I love you because that's how my universe works. I was born to love you. Chashmish, will you and your junior rockstar be mine forever?

Pragya had tears in her eyes. Of course she wanted to be with the only person she truly fell in love with. But at that moment she truly mourned for not being pregnant. Abhi's attachment with the imaginary child was so overpowering that she almost didn't want to tell him that the junior rockstar didn't exist as of now!

Pragya - Abhi I promise to be yours forever, and whenever I do have a junior rockstar inside me, he will be yours forever too, but right now it is just me. I am not pregnant Abhi. I am guessing you deduced this from the doctors statement? Well, I had gone to the doctor to show her Rachna's latest report and also to inform her that Rachna's patient database name should be changed from Rachna Rastogi to Rachna Mehra, that was when the doctor asked me to pass on her message to Rachna, " Pragya please tell her I said, Don't worry Mrs. Mehra, the baby is fine! And Congrats once again!"

Abhi stared at Pragya in shock and once again those treacherous tears came pouring out. What surpised Abhi was that he wasn't teary in happiness hearing she wasn't pregnant, tears came because she isn't. In spite of the knowledge that the child would have been Suresh's, it was this child that had awoken them both from their weariness of walking out of their respective weddings and brought them closer. He was very attached to his phantom child! But he needn't be a phantom child for very long, if things were going to go the way Abhi and Pragya planned!
