In S1 I heard that he turned out to be a Casanova...so it was definitely not only the sex he missed.
Though I can't imagine him as this person who was obsessed with Sonakshi given how he behaves now and how attached he is to his mother till date. I will watch the first two seasons to see that phase... only if they give him a proper redemption in this season.
Actually, it's the other way around for Kuch Rang viewers. It's very hard to imagine him as this person who neglects Sonakshi. It is very hard to imagine that he forgets his anniversary and jokes about which husband will pay attention to his wife after 10 years. It's simply not who Dev is.
Here is the thing about earlier seasons: Ishwari is obsessed with her son and is very possessive about him. Dev has inherited those exact traits from her. And in his case, he focuses them on Sona. He is obsessed with her and extremely possessive of her. Sona knows it also. He doesn't forget her at all for the 7 years they were apart, she is constantly in his mind.
Also, by post-leap S1, Dev has acquired the ability to see that his mother also makes mistakes and he has finally gotten the ability to confront her about it. And he does. He does call her out. So, now reversing his character development, the makers are showing that he is back to agreeing with whatever she says. That is actually quite jarring and conflicting.
Without Sonakshi, Dev isn't quite himself. He loses grip over his own self and more importantly, he completely ignores Ishwari. Ishwari understands how important Sona was to him and if he has to be her darling son, listening to whatever nonsense she spouts, Sona has to be in his life, anchoring him.
So, it's the greatest irony that Dev needed Sona in his life, only then he could perform as the devoted, dutiful son, prioritizing his mother over Sona.
