Actually, it's the other way around for Kuch Rang viewers. It's very hard to imagine him as this person who neglects Sonakshi. It is very hard to imagine that he forgets his anniversary and jokes about which husband will pay attention to his wife after 10 years. It's simply not who Dev is.

Here is the thing about earlier seasons: Ishwari is obsessed with her son and is very possessive about him. Dev has inherited those exact traits from her. And in his case, he focuses them on Sona. He is obsessed with her and extremely possessive of her. Sona knows it also. He doesn't forget her at all for the 7 years they were apart, she is constantly in his mind.

Also, by post-leap S1, Dev has acquired the ability to see that his mother also makes mistakes and he has finally gotten the ability to confront her about it. And he does. He does call her out. So, now reversing his character development, the makers are showing that he is back to agreeing with whatever she says. That is actually quite jarring and conflicting.

Without Sonakshi, Dev isn't quite himself. He loses grip over his own self and more importantly, he completely ignores Ishwari. Ishwari understands how important Sona was to him and if he has to be her darling son, listening to whatever nonsense she spouts, Sona has to be in his life, anchoring him.

So, it's the greatest irony that Dev needed Sona in his life, only then he could perform as the devoted, dutiful son, prioritizing his mother over Sona.

Exactly this ! He is overtly dependant on Sona emotionally and not on Ishwari. Sona is his sounding board. He needs her to mother him and craves her attention always . I think I said it yesterday , Dev is not a partner but fourth baby for Sona and an extremely clingy and needy baby .

Right.

Viewers tend to think Dev is dependent on Ishwari. However, I don't think that is the case.

Dev is in a suffocating relationship with Ishwari and emotionally dependent on Sona to get a few breaths of air of relief.

I think initially she didn't exactly "love" him all that much. She was hero worshipping him...or like someone said, she was infatuated with the glossy cover.

The uncomfortable reality started showing when they started dating. They had arguments over many things....& Ultimately break up because Dev assumed Ishwari tried to commit suicide due to his relation with Sonakshi. He made it very clear that apart from his Mom, no one else mattered to him. I think by this time Sonakshi truly understood him & realised how he is totally under his Mom's control. She was heartbroken & very pissed at him. She refused to marry him when he came jumping back to her after his Mother gave him "permission" to marry Sonakshi. But ultimately Ishwari successfully brainwashed Asha, who in turn scolded Sonakshi into marrying Dev as apparently Dev did nothing wrong & Sonakshi was unnecessarily bitter & vengeful towards him.

After marriage....well....she tried to fix the problematic things..... She tried to simultaneously win over Ishwari + make Dev independent. She tried to teach him stuffs that an adult individual should be doing himself....But well.... Ishwari got offended & started meddling not just in Dev's life but also in Devakshi's bedroom stuffs, their marital life etc & Dev all the time was like Maa yeh chahti hai, Maa yeh bola hai, Maa ke liye ye karna hai etc etc + Maa aur Main sabse alag hai, tum kabhi nahi samjhogi. And if season 3 is anything to go by, that's how it's still going on 🤪

Honestly speaking, I too don't understand why the hell she came back to this psycho house after the 7 years separation. For the first 2 times I think she was just young & gullible.... she was newly in love & thought she could fix all the problems with her love & care... And everyone, including her own mother, expected her to give in, bend & adjust at every freaking step. So she didn't have a supportive guide either.....but after 7 years, experienced & wise from past experience, I don't know why did she sign up for the same crap again.🙄 The 3rd time just doesn't make sense. Especially since Dev didn't even say a proper sorry to her or her family!

Thanks for the summary. Dev has always been like this then.... indecisive.

His emotional dependence on Sona is far more than that on ishwari, because again ishwari's love for Dev is same as Dev's love for Sona . Want unilateral attention and devotion but won't return the same . He's upset that she's not giving him attention but himself makes no effort to notice the stark unhappiness on her face

Well hopefully the therapy will give some happiness to both of them.

Basically both maa beta need her then...yet don't take a moment to belittle her or her views. Sonakshi is rightfully thinking about her position in that household then.

What a perfect analysis. No matter what he says about his mother being his dil or dhadkan or whatever, Dev needs Sona like he needs to breathe. He is incredibly dismissive of her this season, she is the wind that gives him flight. It's jarringly evident how bothered he is when around, he gets restless and uneasy. In season 1 when she was angry at him, he couldn't function till he ensured she accepted that phone (and his apology), similarly this season when she is upset and leaves to her father's house, he simply has to go fetch her that same night. It wasn't for the kids, the kids had already been put to bed, he just has to bring her back- there's no reason, he just has to.

You put it so well when you said he isn't himself without her. When you follow from season 1, you see a hopeful man grow in love. This season, we just see a weak man with mommy issues beyond measure.

They do. Ishwari needs Dev and Dev needs Sonakshi. That is the gist of the matter.

Ishwari has understood now, how much he needs her. And that's why, after Ayush's name-change, when she didn't come home, Ishwari was ready to go beg her to come back. Ishwari has already begged her to come back to Dev two times, because her Dev was pretty much a lost case without Sona.
