She was sleeping. And suddenly, several things seemed to happen at a time. Somebody started shaking her violently and she got up with a jolt. Her head banged into somebody else's making her eyes water. Her yelp of 'ow' accompanied the swearing of the person she banged into. The whole commotion ended with her saying, 'Dev' in a reprimanding tone. 'What? I was trying to wake you up. It's getting late,' he said. Her head whipped around to see the table clock read 6 am. She heaved a sigh of relief and exasperation. She looked back to find her husband almost fully dressed to go to office. 'It is just 6 am, Dev. We have an hour more to rest. And what is with you getting ready so fast?' she asked, blinking her eyes rapidly, still adjusting to the blinding light of the room's tubelight. 'Are you insane? We will get late! Get up fast and get going,' he said dragging her out of the bed. 'You should have proper work ethics. Do you want to be late on the first day back at work?' That had her raising her eyebrows high. 'The rate at which we are going, we'll end up being at work 2 hours earlier than necessary. And before you doubt my work ethics, let me remind you, you go to work at 9 am everyday,' she finished viciously. 'I am different. I am the boss. You are not. We don't want to be late. Go,' he said, almost pushing her into the washroom.
Today was a special day for her. She was getting back to the place she loved the most, her workplace. She was going back to work at the very place fom where she was suspended for her low work ethics by her loving husband. But that was all in the past. Now, she was darn excited and a tad bit nervous about getting back to work. She was feeling very much like she had felt on the first day of her first job. Nervous and ecstatic. But someone seemed to be even more excited than her. Ever since she announced she was getting back to work, Dev was getting even more excited than her. Yesterday night too, he seemed very fidgety and was hardly able to sit down. He also made around a hundred calls, to whom, she didn't know.
Sonakshi came out of the washroom, wearing her favourite orange salwar kameez to find Dev waiting there, looking at her epectantly. Okay. Now enough. He was behaving real weird. And it was creeping her out. 'What?' she asked him. 'What took you so long? Leave it. You need help?' he asked her. 'First of all, I am no Edward Cullen. I can't do things in a flash. Next, I am almost ready, Dev! What do you think I'd need help with?' she inquired, drying her hair. 'I don't know. I just want you to make it fast. Otherwise you'll make it late for me,' he said. 'Make you late for what, Dev?' she asked rolling her eyes. 'Just because I've asked you to drop me to work, you don't have to boss me over like this. Let me get ready. If you are really getting late, I am sorry. Calm down. I'll make it super fast. Give me five minutes, okay?' 'I can do your hair,' he offered. She gave him an are-you-on-the-run-from-an-asylum look which had him sprinting out of the room.
Dev was tapping his foot impatiently, stuffing his toast into his mouth, waiting for Sonakshi. She was being extra slow today, it seemed to him. She'll ruin his surprise for her, he sulked. His musings were brought to a stop when he saw Sonakshi descending the stairs, wearing his and her favourite orange suit, her hair braided in a French plait. There she was, his Dr. Bose, all ready for work. A fond smile crept up his face.
However, Sonakshi's face held an expression of incredulity. What was wrong with Dev. He was stuffing his food with a haste which had her thinking whether he'd eaten for days. Shaking her head hopelessly, she made her way to the dining table.
'Breakfast time,' she muttered to herself, poring herself a glass of juice.
'I already had breakfast,' Dev said.
'I know you did,' Sonakshi said.
'Okay, so let us leave,' he said.
A pause.
'What about me having breakfast?' she asked.
'Can't you skip it today?'
'Are you mental? Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You end your fast of nearly 10 hours. If you don't have breakfast, you might end up having to suffer from-' she ranted on and on, the nutrionist in her coming to full force.
'But you have it everyday!' Dev said and regretted it as soon as he said it.
Her beautiful eyes narrowing menacingly, she jabbed a finger into his chest. 'Are you crazy? First of all you behave like a savage and eat YOUR breakfast as if you hadn't been in sight of food for YEARS and then you stop me from having MY breakfast?'
'We'll grab a coffee from Starbucks. It's on the way.'
'Drinking coffee in the very morning-' she was saying when she was cut off mid sentence by Dev, who kissed her, effectively making her shut up about the ill-effects of having coffee.
'Perfect,' he thought, 'Should've done it before.'
Sonakshi brought all her notepads, pens and other stuff in a cardboard box and put it in the back seat of the car. They sat in the car and Dev started driving her to the hospital. 'Put on your seat belt, Sonakshi,' he said. She ignored him. 'Did you overdose on your meds or something?' she asked him twisting around in her seat. 'You are on a sugar rush today. You sure, you are fine?' 'I am perfect. More than perfect, in fact. I am kicking!' he said grinning, making her smile as well. 'Something is so wrong with you. You are freaking me out. What's the matter?' she asked. 'Nothing, I didn't want us to make it late for everybody,' he said. 'Everybody who?' Sonakshi asked perplexed. Dev looked like a deer caught in lights. 'Everybody meaning my employees.' As she was about to pose any other question, he held up a hand. 'Stop with questions. You make it late in the first place and now these ceasesless questions,' he said. Her mouth fell open. 'You owe me an explanation. You made me acrifice my sleep and now you are rounding on me. Ek toh chori, upar se-' she stopped. She wasn't able to recollect the idiom.
'Seena zori? You still don't remember?' Dev said smiling.
'You remember I used it on you, the very first day we met?' She asked smiling, surprised he remembered.
'Not used it on me. TRIED to use it one me. And yes, I remember.' He said, smiling nostalgically.
'After all this time?'
'Always,'
'Hey,' said Sonakshi grinning,'that was the Harry Potter reference!' Thouroughly confused, Dev said, 'What was?' Sonakshi shook her head looking at him incredulously. 'You don't know the Harry Potter? Are you even-' '-human? Yeah. You've said that to me a 6537483 times. Now get down fast, we've reached.' He said.
They both got down and Dev carried her cardboard box for her. The hospital was quiet. Only the sweepers and the 24 hour working staff were seen. They've come way too early, Sonakshi thought. Now she'd have so many boring hours to wile till her working hours would start.
Dev and Sonakshi made their way to her cabin. It was locked and Sonakshi asked for the hospital staff to bring the keys. As they stood waiting, Sonakshi smiled happily looking at the closed doors. She felt so much at home. And Dev stood back, looking at her, hardly able to control his excitement.
Sonakshi opened the door and was welcomed by a loud chorus of 'Welcome, Dr. Bose'. Inside her room were around fifty people. Her patients, her ex colleagues and some of the hospital staff, she realized. They were all giving her warm, welcomig smiles. They had all come. After all this time, she realized, her eyes brimming with sudden and warm tears as a brigt smile made way to her lips. 'Woah!' She whispered. 'Wow! This is amazing! Thank you all, so, so much for being here.' She said. She knew who did this for her. Her face shinning with unfiltered happiness and pleasure, she turned around to find Dev leaning across the door smiling at her happiness.
Her patients, all of them came to her one by one, congratulating her for her marriage and welcoming her back to work. There was the woman who'd watched Dhara Singh's films during her pregnancy, nkw holding a baby in her arms and there was Mr. Kohli, who promised her he'd become as slim as her, only he doubled. And there were so many others.
Dev stood back his eyes tracing Sonakshi's every movement, his own eyes brimming with happiness, as he stood watching his wife interact with her patients. She was extremely, happy. He could tell that and he patted himself for carrying out the whole plan successfully. The idea struck him one night, when they were watching a cheesy rom-com on their bed, on Sonakshi's insistance. And only he knew how difficult it had been for him to gather all of her patients. Convincing them was not hard, though. All of them were pretty excited and ready to give their Dr. Bose a big welcome.
Sonakshi waded her way through the crowd in her room to Dev, holding a boy of around 5-6 years in her arms. 'Mr. Dixit, meet Mr. Chinu, my favourite patient,' she said. Dev looked at her and the boy. Sonakshi had a way with the kids too, Dev thought. He did not know if they'd have a baby of their own, ever. The thought pinched him. He should tell Sonakshi about her condition. He hated hiding things from her. Why was he going there now? He looked back at the boy. He was very cute.
'Doctor didi, where were you all these days?' asked the boy. 'You see this man here,' she saidd pointing at Dev, mockingly narrowing her eyes at him, 'he stopped your Doctor didi from coming back.' She pouted. She looked so adorable, Dev thought. Had no one been in the room, he'd have kissed her. 'Uncle, why did you do that to didi?' asked the little boy in her arms. 'Uncle? Aape aisa kyun kiya?' asked the boy. Suddenly, Sonakshi burst out into peals of laughter. 'Uncle,' she managed in between her laughter. 'He called you uncle and me didi,' she said, raising her imaginary collar. 'See, Mr. Dixit, you are becoming old.'
After sometime, all of Sonakshi's parents filed out of the room, closing the door behind them. Dev took out her cardboard box and started arraning things on Sonakshi's table. Sonakshi followed him, looking at her husband with a look of pure adoration and undiluted love. He had done so much. For her.
She kissed him, stopping his work mid way. She took him by surprise and clumsily held on to him, thanking for all he had done and for his love. He steadied her as he held her by her waist and kissed her back. Sonakshi's happiness knew no bounds. She fell in love with her husband, all over again. She kissed him more bringing his face closer.
'Easy, girl,' Dev said pulling back, 'we are at your wokplace.' ' I love you, Dev and thank you,' she said hugging him. 'Tell me something I don't know,' he said grinning rather arrogantly. 'Shut up, that was the moment you were supposed to profess your undying love for me,' Sonakshi said jutting out her lower lip. Dev bent down and kissed her saying, 'I thought you already knew I loved you,' he said. 'Of course I did, pretty boy,'she said ruffling his hair. 'Don't do that,' he said annoyed, ducking down. 'And don't 'pretty boy' me. Okay?' 'Not okay, pretty boy,' Sonakshi said grinning, ruffling his hair, yet gain. 'Sonakshi,' he said, warning her. 'What, pretty boy? What will you do?' 'I will do this,' Dev said, grabbing her by her waist and tickling her non-stop. Laughing, hardly able to catch her breath, Sonakshi said, 'Dev stop - ah - I can't breath, god, stop it.' Dev laughing along, pulled her closer.
'Mam, shit-' The door opened to reveal Sonakshi's flustered assistant looking down at the floor. Dev and Sonakshi broke apart immediately. 'Um, Pooja, what- what is it?' asked Sonakshi smoothing down her hair. 'Mam, Dr. Sinha is coming to meet you. Just came to inform you, I'll leave,' the assistant scurried away, still not looking up. Dev burst out laughing followed by Sonakshi. 'We scared the poor thing,' Sonakshi said, guiltily. 'That is why you are supposed to knock,' Dev added.
The very secong, they heard a knock on the door and they opened it to admit Dr. Sinha. Had it not been for him, she'd have never met Dev, Sonakshi thought. 'Welcome back, Dr. Sonakshi. We are all glad you are back,' he said, smiling. 'Thank you so much, Doctor.' 'I wanted to meet you earlier but I got late. Well, I have some very special news for you,' he said. 'Special news, Sir?' she asked, intrigued. Dev stood back waiting, simling hard. 'Yes, I've sent some of your articles on the importance of vegeterain food to Women's Health Magazine and they were impressed. They want you to do a piece for them on protein foods. Could you do it for them,?' he asked a stunned Sonakshi.
Sonakshi could hardly believe her ears. Was this all real? She looked back to find Dev grinning from ear to ear. Her eyes, yet again, filled with tears of jo. She thanked Dr. Sinha a million times and wrung his hand, shaking it. 'Don't thank me, you desreved it,' he said and left
Sonakshi smiled the brightest and the biggest smile of her life and hugged Dev as if her life depended on it. 'You knew all along?' she asked her voice muffled, as she hid her head in the crook of his neck. 'Yeah, I did. I hard a really hard time keeping it a secret from you,' he said stroking he hair. 'Thank you so, so much!' Sonakshi said, bursting into tears, tightening her hug, crushing him. 'Hey, hey calm down, love. You derserved it all. And why are you thanking me? Ae you mad?' he asked pulling back to wipe her tears. 'Today is one of the best days of my life, Dev. Thanks for this,' Sonakshi said. She didn't remember being this happy ever. 'What is with you thanking me non-stop? Okay, if you really want to thank me, yu come home fast today,' he said. 'Why?' 'Why?!' Dev said, agahst. 'Oh shit, sorry!' Sonakshi said, remebering. From a week he had been continuosuly hinting, well making it very evident, in other words, that he was planning somethig very huge for tonight. If all the innuendoes, which had her cheeks painted crimson permanently were to be taken as any clues, he knew what he had planned for them. This was something they both were going to enjoy very much.
'Thank god, you remember,' Dev said sarcasam dripping from his tone. She hugged him, again. Dev smiled. He noticed the tears still clinging to her long eyelashes. He hugged her tight, drawng slow circles on her back. 'Hey, Sona. I love you. And I am very proud of you.' He drew back and kissed her very hard on her cheek. 'Take care, okay?' 'You are being irresistible today,' she said. That made him grin hugely. 'Don't keep saying things like that. Otherwise I might end up doing something that will give your assistant a heart attack,' he said earning a chuckle from her. 'Bye,' she said.
As Dev drove to his office, he couldn't help but think this was the best day of his life. His loe was happy and so was he. And today was just not the day to let her know of her medical condition. Some other day, he'd surely tell her, he decided.
