Chapter Seven
Prem and Heer sat staring at each other, hearts beating wildly as the words of the doctor sunk in.
Doctor Gupta, used to these reactions, smiled and pointed to the screen, 'If you look here, you can almost make out the shapes of the babies...'
Prem, finally having regained feeling in his body, gathered the courage to speak and cleared his throat. His eyes followed the image the doctor outlined with her fingers. 'You mean these two peanut shaped things?' he asked pointing to the screen.
Heer nudged him in the stomach and flashed him a glare, already protective about her babies.
The doctor gave a little laugh. 'Yes, these two little peanut shaped things are your babies.'
Heer smiled as she met Prem's gaze and he grinned down at her.
She looked back at the screen. 'Wow,' was all that she could muster.
The doctor gave them a detailed tour of their unborn children, whilst they looked in awe at the sight in front of them. Heer kept her hand over her mouth, unable to stop the tears that flowed from her eyes. Prem smiled at her, gently wiping away her tears and squeezing her hand.
The ultrasound was completely nerve-wracking but such a beautiful sight. It was an amazingly new awakening for them to see the image of their babies. Their babies looked like a little peanuts but they were their little peanuts- they were beautiful, and Prem and Heer loved every little thing about them. The reality of the situation dawned on them- they were actually becoming parents, and not just to one baby, but two! Suddenly their happiness doubled, alongside their anxieties. At that moment, their heads were spinning with a thousand thoughts.
'From what I see, you are just over three months pregnant, so around 14 weeks pregnant. And you don't need to worry, I don't see any huge problems at the moment- yet your weight is bothering me slightly considering you are having two babies. I would like to see an improvement on that for the next time I see you,' said Doctor Gupta, whilst giving Heer a reassuring smile.
'I'll make sure of that,' said Prem, not letting his gaze stray from Nakusha.
Heer turned her head sideways to look at him, and he brought his hand up to caress her cheek. She closed her eyes and continued to cry tears of joy. Hearing the heartbeat of their babies and hearing the doctor tell them that the babies were healthy was the best news she could have ever hoped for. And having Prem by her side made the moment more beautiful.
'It's quite early to find out the sexes of the babies, so hopefully after a few weeks we will be able to discover that,' said the doctor.
The ultrasound made them feel closer to their babies, made it all so real, so Heer sighed sadly when the doctor turned off the machine and she could no longer see the image of her babies. Luckily, Doctor Gupta kindly printed off a picture of their twins from the ultrasound and arranged another appointment before letting them go.
Prem and Heer left the office, lovingly stared at the picture, unable to snatch their eyes away from it. They were having twins- it was happening and it was real. Prem reached down and laced his fingers with Heer's. She closed her eyes momentarily and smiled, not looking up at him. They walked towards the car in a blissful silence.
When they arrived home, Heer asked Prem if she could go for an ultrasound everyday and he laughed at her. Heer pouted at him, failing to understand what was so funny about her question.
~
Prem had already commenced the role of Heer's carer, taking care of her every little need, and stopping her from doing even the most simplest jobs of the house. Although behind his back, Heer would continue to cook and clean, refusing to let her pregnancy make her feel incapable of working.
After the dinner, Heer took the dishes to the kitchen and began washing up. Suddenly she felt Prem's warm hands over her soapy hands. 'Why are you doing this?' he said sternly looking down at her.
Heer, unwillingly, put her hand lovingly up to his cheek, forgetting that her hands were covered in washing up soap bubbles. 'Oops, sorry!!' she said while laughing.
Prem wiped the soap off his cheek and cheekily brushed it on Heer's nose with his index finger. Heer squinted as she looked down at the soap on her nose, causing Prem to laugh. She herself ended up laughing with him.
The way her eyes lit up had his heart slamming in his chest.
~
That night Heer lay in her bed staring at the ceiling, smiling mindlessly. She was unable to get out of the state of ecstasy that was brought by the news of them having twins.
Prem sat on the couch on the other end of the room, watching her as she caressed her stomach. She had this radiance in her that had his heart melting every time he looked at her.
'Prem...?' Heer suddenly spoke.
'Hmmm?' he urged.
Heer paused for a moment before continuing. 'How are we going to handle two babies?' she asked.
Prem grinned and got up to walk towards her bed. Heer's pulse accelerated with each step he took towards her. She sat up abruptly.
The mattress sunk as Prem sat down beside her. He looked down at her with a smile.
'Go to sleep,' he whispered.
Heer obeyed and lay back down. She pulled the covers up to her neck, closing her eyes. Prem gently stroked her forehead, lulling her to sleep. When he was convinced she had fallen asleep, he slowly crawled back into the little couch that was his bed.
Strangely, Heer dreamt of Prem running around in a garden, landing on the grass as two little boys jumped excitedly on top of him. Heer snuggled against her pillow as she reveled in the sight of Prem's smile.
~
The next morning Heer awoke to a surprise; the morning newspaper. Tears welled in her eyes as she read the lines across the page. Not giving herself time to let it all sink in, she rushed to the living room and threw the newspaper on the coffee table in front of where Prem sat. 'What is this?!' she cried.
Prem looked at her in shock and then at the newspaper. Wordlessly he picked up the paper and read the news that Nakusha had just read moments ago.
'Prem Juneja moves in with mystery woman'
, the headline read.
Surprise mixed with anger bubbled to the surface. He crushed the paper and tossed it across to the other side of the room.
The news made public Heer's pregnancy, going as far as digging up details about her personal life and her supposed secret meetings with Prem. He cursed himself, knowing that he should have been expecting this and should have prevented it from happening. Prem looked up at Heer and stood up to hold her shoulders.
'Hey, what's this? I thought you were stronger than this...why the tears?' he asked her.
Heer looked at him helplessly and sniffed.
How adorable she looked, Prem thought to himself. He smiled and moved his hand to place it under her chin.
'Stop crying now Heer ...it's nothing to worry about,' he said soothingly, '...people had to find out sooner or later...I guess it had to be sooner.'
'I don't like this at all...people scrutinizing us, meddling in things that are personal. They don't know anything about me, but now after my pregnancy being out in the open...'
Prem sighed. Having news printed about him was not a new thing, but now Heer's life was linked to his, and he understood that she was not accustomed to entering this sort of lifestyle.
'Yes, they don't know anything about you, and possibly they'll have misconceptions after this. Which is why maybe it's time to introduce you to the people I know?' Prem suggested.
'Huh?' Heer asked in confusion.
'I wanted to throw a party anyway, to celebrate the news about the babies. What better way to introduce you to everyone?'
'Introduce me? As whom...the girl you got pregnant? I'm sure that'll go down well with everyone!' Heer looked away, harshly brushing away her tears.
Prem grabbed her chin and made her look back at him. His silence made her realize that he hadn't enjoyed listening to what she had just said. His dark eyes stared at her fiercely.
Heer looked up and met his gaze, deliberating for a moment. 'I don't know...it just doesn't seem like a good idea,' she shrugged, 'I mean...I feel very uncomfortable in these kinds of parties'.
'What is there to be uncomfortable about when I'll be there by your side?' Prem said, his fingers giving a light touch to her cheek. '...holding your hand,' he added, looking down and cheekily linking his fingers with her.
She bit back a smile and looked at their entwined hands. His captivating eyes made it very difficult to refuse. 'Fine, but a small party,' Heer accepted defeated, still slightly anxious about the whole thing.
The sound of Prem's phone ringing interrupted her train of thoughts.
Prem reached down his pocket for his phone and answered it. 'Hel...' before he could continue the sentence he heard yelling on the other end of the line and held the phone a meter away from his ear. 'I know...I know...I'm sorry...!!' he spluttered as he placed the phone back against his ear. 'I know it's been days...okay, I said I'm sorry'I'll come tonight I promise'I promised didn't I'?'
Heer sat down on the sofa and rested her head back against the soft cushions. A small smile crept upon her face as she listened to his voice. She loved the way it sounded, melodic to her ears.
'...I'm alright...yes I'm eating properly, honest! I know, I'll see you tonight...yes, I love you too...bye,' Prem finished.
Heer's eyes flew open at the last words and she stared at the ceiling for a moment as the meaning of the words hit her. She sat up abruptly to look at him, watching him smiling as he put the phone back in his trouser pocket. She mentally hit herself for being so silly, for thinking that there was no one else in his life. Heer sat reeling from those three little words, her head spinning. Why was she feeling jealous? So what if he had a girlfriend? He had the right to be happy too.
Then why was just the thought of him with another woman hurting her so much?
Prem turned to look at her and noticed the distress that lined her face. He leaned on the floor in front of her. 'What's wrong Heer?'
Heer looked down at him and plastered a smile across her face. 'Nothing's wrong'. She stood up and was about to leave when she felt his hand clasp her wrist, stopping her. Her breath caught in her throat and she looked back helplessly at him, holding back the tears.
'Sit,' Prem ordered.
She sat back down meekly, staring at her hands settled on her lap.
Prem frowned at her sudden change of mood, watching as she played with her fingers nervously.
Finally Heer spoke. 'What's her name?' she asked in a soft whisper, the tears threatening to spill.
'Who's name?' Prem asked, confused.
'Girlfriend was it?' Heer continued. She paused for a moment, taking a deep breath. 'I bet she must be really pretty,' she mumbled, more to herself than to him.
Prem furrowed his eyebrows as he tried to comprehend what she was talking about. Suddenly recalling his phone call he looked at Heer and bit back the urge to laugh. Jealousy, huh? A mischievous grin spread across his face as he decided to play with her a little. 'Oh...uh...girlfriend? Yes, she is my girlfriend...in a way.'
Heer longed for the earth to open and swallow her up at that moment. She abruptly stood back up and looked down at him.
'I'm quite tired, I think I need some sleep,' she lied.
Prem felt a pang at his heart when he noticed the glistening tears forming at her eyes. He then realized that he had taken his teasing a tad too far.
Heer brushed past him and was almost towards the door when Prem's hand quickly caught her arm to pull her back to face him.
'Why do you take everything so seriously?' he asked as he ran a thumb under her eyes, wiping away the tears.
Heer looked away. 'It's my hormones,' she muttered and Prem laughed.
'That excuse stopped working a long time ago!' he joked.
Heer's shoulders slumped.
'If you must know, her name's Gayatri, she's extremely gorgeous, and...'
'And...?' Heer asked fearfully, looking up at him with her vulnerable teary eyes.
'...and she's my fifty-two year old mother,' Prem completed the sentence.
'Huh?' was Heer's response.
Prem grinned. 'My mother...,' he repeated. '...the mother who I would like you to meet tonight.'
'Tonight?' Heer asked him in shock.
