Part 9
The engagement party was in full swing. Preet was dancing with Ash in the crowd, trying to rope his brothers in as well. Harman retreated to a corner, uncomfortable in his light brown sherwani. Prem was fidgeting in his cream-coloured sherwani, eyes flicking to the staircase every few moments. Ash reluctantly pulled away from Preet when she noticed Mahek frantically gesturing at her from the second floor. Preet admired the way her pale pink lehnga looked against her complexion as she made her way upstairs. He smirked, throwing one end of his dark blue dupatta over his shoulder.
"Hai, kya dikhti hai," he whistled softly. A sudden slap on his back stunned him, and he turned slowly. Shaurya raised an amused eyebrow.
"Kya keh rahey they?"
"Kuch – kuch nahin, bas," Preet shrugged slightly. "I was admiring the view."
Shaurya chuckled. "You have guts, my friend."
Preet gave a little bow. "Thank you."
"Ab chale?" Shaurya steered the blue sherwani clad young man to the rest of the family.
A hush fell over the crowd as all eyes turned to the staircase. A vision in cream was making her way down the stairs, her sisters by her side. There was colour in her cheeks, adding to her radiance. Prem could not hear anything but the beat of his heart and the strains of the song playing dimly in the background.
Ghoonghat Hi Banalo Roshini Se Noor Ke
She looked more beautiful than he had ever seen. Or maybe she had always been this beautiful, but he was only noticing now. Shaurya tugged on his maroon sherwani, suddenly feeling trapped, when her lips curved into a teasing smile as she said something to his sister, resulting in giggles all around. Her anarkali-churidaar, the same colour as his, fit her like a glove. He saw the sindoor in her parting with a quiet happiness, that she was his.
Saason Se Uljhi Rahi Meri Saasein
Meher was having a hard time in her lehnga, the blue fabric constantly tangling between her legs. It was only Ash's hiss of warning that kept her from running upstairs to change into something simpler. To distract herself, she observed her sister's in-laws. There was absolute adoration on Jiju's face as he gazed at Heer Didi. It was as though the rest of the world did not exist. Lalit Chacha and Gayatri Chachi looked happy, and she was certain there were tears in Chacha's eyes. Kul Di and Veera were smiling, thrilled at the new addition to their family. They made their way to the base of the staircase. Haman had rejoined his family, a complacent smile on his lips, and Meher's lips twitched when she saw the pencil he held in one hand and the napkin in the other. Preet – she blinked suddenly. It was not that he was not happy, it was evident that he was. But, she fought to keep the scowl from spreading across her face, they were matching.
Ghoonghat Hi Banalo Roshini Se Noor Ke
Veera grinned at Ash as she stood next to her, walking her Bhabhi to her Bhaiyya. Her green lehnga was pinned to give her the least trouble, but she still had to keep herself from fidgeting. She was more comfortable in jeans than this fabric, beautiful though it was. Her lips curled upwards as she saw Manmeet struggle with his dark green kurta. At least, she thought to herself, someone was more uncomfortable than her.
Saason Se Uljhi Rahi Meri Saasein
His eyes twinkled merrily as he saw Heer reach Prem, whose hand instantly curled around hers, eliciting a wolf-whistle from someone he assumed was Preet. As the song came to an end, he made his way to the door, before giving his signal. It was showtime.
Whistling filled the air as the lights went off. A spotlight fell on the entrance of the house, where a man stood, back facing everyone inside. He wore a hat, tilted such that the shadow fell across his face. Only the white of his suit jacket and pants could be seen. He began to sing.
"Apni Yaadon Ko Chhod Na Jaana,
Apne Vaadon Ko Tod Na Jaana."
He spun around as he sang the next line, the light reflecting on the satin material of his pink shirt. He danced his way to the stunned family.
"Jaana Main Hoon Tera Deewana, Deewana.
Aashiq Pehla Purana."
Mahek covered her grin with one hand as she recognised the singer. Her husband had a growing look of comprehension on his face and he made a move to call out. She quietly stopped him, silently begging him to just enjoy the show. They watched the man slowly face each member of the family, pointing to each one as he sang.
"Jaise Tune Toda Mera Dil,
Tera Dil Tutega."
Prem's heart would have sunk if he had believed the song, but the completely bewildered look on Heer's face, and the reassuring weight of her hand in his told him that this was just a prank. His suspicions were confirmed when the man stopped in front of an amused Meher, repeating his lines.
"Jaise Tune Toda Mera Dil,
Tera Dil Tutega."
He pulled her against him. Meher's hand automatically clutched his shoulder, and he danced her across the room as he sang.
"Tera Haathon Se Bhi Kisi Ka, Daaman Chutega."
He dipped her, and she giggled when he pulled her back up, singing the next line. The ridiculousness of the song was evident to only the few that recognised the singer.
"Yaad Rakhna, Oh Bekadar, Bekhabar, Bewafa."
Letting go of Meher, he held out a hand to Mahek.
"Saari Rasmo Ko Chhod Na Jaana,
Apni Kasmo Ko Tod Na Jaana."
She took his hand, tossing a look at her grinning husband. The man twirled her.
"Jaana Main Hoon Tera Deewana, Deewana.
Aashiq Pehla Purana."
He pulled away from Mahek, who went to stand by Heer. The smile on both Prem and Heer's faces told Mahek that Heer had figured out the singer's identity and had shared this information with Prem.
The singer continued to dance, pausing in front of Ash. She folded her arms across her chest as he looked her up and down. He shook his head, and moved on. Ash rolled her eyes. As he sang, he approached Teji. Even Ash could not contain her giggles.
"Mere Baad Ab Kis Ko Barbaad Karegi.
Mere Baad Ab Kis Ko Barbaad Karegi,
Meri Tarah Tu Bhi Ek Din Faryaad Karegi."
Before he moved away from her, Teji tugged his ear, playfully scolding him, even as he continued to sing.
"Yaad Rakhna, Oh Be-Adab, Be-Samaj Be-Imaan."
He put a hand on Shaurya's shoulder as he mournfully sang the next few lines. Mahek muffled an un-ladylike snort. Meher and Ash were holding each other up, helplessly laughing.
"Aise Apno Ko Chhod Na Jaana,
Mere Sapno Ko Thod Na Jaana."
It was of no surprise to the Maans' when Shaurya rather happily danced off with the singer as he continued his song. The audience could only giggle as the two men waltzed romantically.
"Jaana Main Hoon Tera Deewana, Deewana.
Aashiq Pehla Purana."
They ended to applause and wolf-whistles, amidst hearty chuckles and guffaws. The singer removed his hat and took a bow.
Veera clutched her sister's arm. "Ohmygod, that's Vayu Kapoor!"
Kul Di nodded. "I know!" she squealed.
Vayu met the family properly, getting scolded by Teji again, as well as Balraj, both for coming late, and for pulling such a stunt without informing anyone. They introduced him officially to the Junejas, who enthusiastically greeted him. Preet was a bit surprised to see him bypass Ash, both ignoring one another, to pull Meher into a tight hug. The beam on Meher's face was unlike any he had ever seen.
Prem and Heer exchanged rings as everyone looked on. There were smiles on all faces as they saw the obvious happiness the couple was experiencing. The food was then opened to the crowd. The adults began to mingle with guests. Harman, upon spotting Nisha, tugged Veera away, so that he could go and annoy her. Preet and Manmeet headed for the food, and Kulraj disappeared, trying to find her children.
Vayu looked at Prem. "You do realise what you are getting into, right?"
Heer made a face at his obvious gesture to her. Prem smiled, eyes never leaving Heer's face. She blushed.
Vayu paused. "You know, I don't think I've ever seen Heer this quiet. She's always so annoying. And that irritating way she yells," he trailed off.
"Va-yu!" Heer whined, crossing her arms across her chest.
"There is it!" Vayu exclaimed. "I knew it was too good to be true." She pouted.
Mahek smirked, deciding to jump on the bandwagon. "Prem, why are you standing so far away from Hee – I mean, us?"
"Haan," Vayu nodded. "Tumhari toh sagai ho chuki hai, ab thoda flirt-shirt karo. I mean, look at these two." He gestured at Shaurya and Mahek. "There's barely an inch between them."
Mahek, who had been leaning comfortably against her friend, jerked away, as he let go of her hastily as well. Muttering something about guests, Shaurya sped off. His wife glared at Vayu, completely embarrassed.
Vayu winced. "I should probably," he escaped before finishing his sentence. Mahek followed close behind, her annoyance evident.
Luckily for Vayu, Mahek was waylaid by guests. He made his way to the food. He stopped when he ran into Manmeet. The other man paused as well, looking rather nervous. Vayu had been informed of the situation by Shaurya, and having had time to think things over, he had come to the conclusion that Manmeet was one strong person to have left his family. Silently, he held out his hand for the other man to shake. Manmeet gripped it tightly, exchanging grins. Ashlesha approached, and slipped an arm through Manmeet's.
"Why are you befriending him?" she asked disdainfully.
Vayu smirked. "The better question, sweetheart, would be, why is he friends with you?"
Ash glared at Vayu. "Maybe because he has some brains, unlike some people." She sniffed. "And I'm nice." She stressed the last word.
Vayu took a step closer, looking at her intently. She faltered slightly under his intense stare. "Nice to look at, for sure," he said huskily. He smirked. "If you're blind."
Ash's mouth fell open in shock, and Vayu grinned at Manmeet before walking away. Manmeet chuckled at the offended squeak that escaped the woman next to him. She hit his arm. "Not funny."
Manmeet nodded, biting his lip and clutching his arm in pain.
New entry! Character sketch on page 4 has been edited. And people who are interested to know who plays who, just let me know. I was planning on adding photos, but now I'm too lazy to do that. I might make a credits video. Someday. 😆
