Shah Rukh Khan gets personal with Compaq

By Businessofcinema.com Team
28 February 2007, 05:30 PM

MUMBAI: With Compaq creating innovative brand integrations on Star Plus' Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) host and Compaq brand ambassador Shah Rukh Khan has made the (branded) computer, the central character on the show.

While adding a regional flavour to the show by terming Compaq as Compaq Dada or Compaq Garu, depending on the origin of the participant, SRK has personified the computer - around whom the entire show revolves.

Khan says, "There's no room for kuccha-kuccha about the fact that the PC is today an integral part of our lives, empowering us to succeed. I am glad to be associated with the Compaq campaign that aims to empower the masses. As a techno-freak myself, the PC to me is a virtual extension of myself, and my best friend with whom I not only work but also play and entertain."

Hewlett-Packard India head of marketing, personal systems group Shuchi Sarkar adds, "The Compaq 'Kal Tumhara Hai' campaign has been conceptualized on the strong belief that the PC empowers users to achieve their dreams. While in a TV one can see other's dreams happen, the PC enables the user to realize his dreams. The target is to make the PC the second or the third durable in every household. We are leveraging the association to leverage SRK's charisma and mass popularity to educate consumers on the proposition of empowering people with their PCs."

The company is focusing on strengthening its "Kal Tumhara Hai" consumer education programme through non-traditional platforms such as brand integration shows, online communities, school contact events and viral campaigns.

Hewlett-Packard India is also launching a special ad "Compaq Chowdhury" with Shah Rukh Khan for Compaq. The new ad will personify the computer to enhance the personal connect in a regional flavour for its "Kal Tumhara Hai" brand campaign.

The new ad to be launched across the country will be customized in the local lingo of the region. "We will continue to create interesting brand integration around KBC, while also spawning other similar initiatives to drive the mass appeal for the brand through Shah Rukh Khan," Sarkar says.

SRK FEELS KNOWLEDGE CAN BE FUN

Friday, March 02, 2007 10:1:40 IST

Shah Rukh Khan seems to be on an experimenting mode. After dancing to his tune for the music video for promoting his new show KBC

Shah Rukh Khan seems to be on an experimenting mode. After dancing to his tune for the music video for promoting his new show KBC, Shah Rukh Khan has once again danced to his favorite choreographer Ganesh Hegde's tune for the new T Series album Karle Karle Koi Dhamaal directed, conceptualized, choreographed and sung by Ganesh Hegde, with music by Vishal Shekhar, lyrics by R D Telang, Shabbir Ahmed, Kumaar Gill and Asif Baig.

Ganesh Hegde is pretty excited with his association with SRK after his earlier association with Big B. Exclaims Shah Rukh "The thought behind the song is really nice, since it encourages queries and questions in a fun way, not like an exam. It says knowledge can be fun. For the first time, Ganesh has lent his voice for playback and I think I am thankful he has done it with me. The conceptualization to present me in a different way was completely Ganesh's idea. Vishal -Shekhar came up with the tune in a minute when they heard what Ganesh was planning.

I think between the three of them Karle Karle has turned out to be an interesting mix of foot tapping way of encouraging the quest for knowledge". With Shah Rukh Khan donning the cap of the new KBC host, it is not surprising that he is encouraging the quest for knowledge. Isn't it?

I'm a softie when it comes to KBC: Shah Rukh

New Delhi, March 2: Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, the new superstar host of quiz show "Kaun Banega Crorepati" (KBC), says his prime concern is not so much TV ratings but to keep contestants happy.

Shah Rukh, who faced a lot of scepticism after taking over from Amitabh Bachchan as the host of KBC, also says he knows from the audience reaction that he is doing a good job.

"I want everyone to win from here. Apart from being a superstar here, I feel they should win some money and they should feel proud of their achievements," Shah Rukh told CNN-IBN in an interview about the show on STAR Plus.

"They are hungry, as some of them have tried for years to make it here. I would like them to go back with the feeling that having the hunger for knowledge and success has its benefits when you come to KBC.

"I should go out of here thinking - life well spent because I got to meet so may people and I am very emotional about that part. I have been tough all my life, but yes, I am a softie when it comes to KBC."

He refused to comment on the ratings of KBC saying he didn't understand the business aspect of either his films or his television show.

"To be really honest I am not from this business. As close as TV business is to my film business, genuinely, for the past 17 years, I have never looked at the collections of my films. These are things that are not in my control and I don't think I have a right to comment on them because I am not a trade analyst.

"I wouldn't like to talk about television because I have even less knowledge about it. I've been told that the TRPs are awful, I've been told that the TRPs are picking up, I've been told that they are steady now and I've even been told that we are the leading show on television right now."

He said the numbers can get bad again, but he, producer Siddharth Basu and Sameer Nair, who conceptualised KBC, were making sure that the entertainment aspect of the show remained intact.

"We'll see through making sure that we don't slip on the entertainment aspect. I have a great time, which I think is quite apparent in the way I conduct the show."

The superstar also added that he didn't have to look at the figures to understand the performance on his show.

"I can feel it for I have worked long enough in the business of entertainment to know when something works. I can see it on the faces of 500 people who come here, I can see it on the faces of the contestants and I can even see it on the faces of the people who are watching television at home."

But, he added, screaming headlines made it difficult to ignore anything about KBC.

"It's difficult not knowing the numbers because all the news channels are showing it. The whole day and night they are telling you about it. KBC was even in the newspapers and their headlines, which is amazing because if it makes it to the headlines, it means it is an important show."

He admitted that he didn't mind leading his contestants on when they were unsure of the answer.

"I believe in telepathy and I think it really works. There was a guy who I really liked and who was very intelligent. He was doing very well on the show and he came to a question where he thought it was not going to happen. I started thinking and I putting it to his mind that this is the answer. I wanted him to get the right answer."

KBC News - It's all for a good cause, say Preity and Rani

Rani and Preity are happy to win on KBC for their respective causes.

It's 8 AM and two of Bollywood's most beautiful actresses, are busy getting ready in their respective trailer vans for the KBC shoot that is scheduled to begin soon. Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherji have been invited to share the stage with their close friend and colleague, Shah Rukh Khan, for the Holi Special.

Rani says she has had no time to prepare but still wants to win big as all the money she earns from the episode will be donated to a cause close to her heart. "I just had a little niece some months back and she is my life. And she was born at Holy Family Hospital and one of the doctors their told me that there are a lot of babies – premature and otherwise- who are born with heart problems. But sadly the hospital doesn't have a ward to treat them. Therefore I plan to donate all my winnings here to build this special ward at Holy Family Hospital."

Preity has equally charitable plans up her sleeve too. She says she plans to win every penny available on the show for the Red Cross Himachal. "Everything I earn today I want to give to the Red Cross Himachal. Everyone has heard of the Red Cross but this is their division in Himachal which needs funds," says the actress who has lately been involved in numerous social causes.

Looking nervous at the start of the episode, the duo surely and steadily moved up the winning ladder. At the end of play each of them was happy with the amount each of them would be donating. "I am very happy. Preity and I had an opportunity to come and play with Shah Rukh which in itself was brilliant. We had so much fun. And more importantly we both will be able to give a decent sum of money to both our causes. What else can we ask for?" Touch!

KBC News - I can't ever say no to Shah, says Rani

Rani gets candid about her views on SRK, Holi and KBC.

Rani Mukherji is infamous for always being politically correct. You can't stop this Bengali bombshell from crossing her ts and dotting her is. But this time we sit her down to ask some very pointed questions on the sets of KBC where she is recording for the Holi Special which will be aired tonight. We had just one rule and that is she couldn't be diplomatic in her replies!

Below is an excerpt from an interview with Rani Mukherji.

Your friendship with Shah Rukh is often written about. Tell us about it.

I love Shah Rukh whether that is as my friend in my real life or as my hero in reel life. He is a great person and I admire him for that. I have learnt so much from him throughout my career and still continue to do so every day. When he asked me to come onto the show I ensured I made it here. That's just the way my relationship with him is – if he asks me for something there is no way I can ever tell him a no!

What do you think of KBC as a show?

I think this is a great show. It's the perfect way to get the family to sit together and interact. When we all watch it at home, you can't help but get involved and have mini competitions in your house. And I think that's a great way. Also, at the same time kids get to learn so much. So yes, I think this a great great show.

How do you think Shah Rukh is fairing as the Host?

For everyone who knows Shah, they will all agree he is a people's person. The Shah Rukh you see on your screen here on KBC is exactly how he is in real life too. And therefore I think this is the perfect show for him. He makes the contestants feel so comfortable and good about themselves. Personally if you ask me, I think Shah can do anything and I'll love him in everything he does.

Are you fond of playing Holi?

If you personally ask me I think day by day, Holi is only getting dirtier. As a kid I loved playing it but over time the whole festival is losing its charm. It doesn't feel like Holi anymore. You only end up hearing of people getting hurt with all those egg balloons and mud being thrown. Holi used to be a whole lot of fun but it doesn't feel like that anymore.

So why did you agree to participate in the Holi Special then?

Like I said, Shah asked me to come and I can never say 'No' to him. But also more importantly this is a great opportunity for me to earn some money for a cause I am supporting.

All the money I win today will be donated to the Holy Family Hospital. My niece was born there and one of the doctors there drew my attention to the fact there isn't any facility for new born babies that may have a heart condition. So therefore all the money I win here tonight will be given to the hospital to help them with building this ward.

A huge dig at Shah Rukh and 'Kaun Banega Crorepati'?

by Debasis Jana

As if a forefather was not bad enough, Shah Rukh Khan now has a half-sister too. To celebrate its first anniversary, Filmy has launched 'Kaun Banega Champu' (Sunday 7.30 pm, repeat Saturday 2.30 pm), a dig at 'Kaun Banega Crorepati', of course. The show has Ruk Ruk Khan (Sunil Grover) inviting celebrity (spoof) guests to come and play the fun game show. Instead of the hotseat they take the potseat (a classy silver commode), the lifeline often leads to a wrong number and the audience voting meter is actually the remote control for the studio air-conditioner with freezing results or otherwise… the best part is the prize. "We are not giving any fake money," Filmy marketing and content head Shailesh Kapoor tells. "Instead, it will be jumma ka chumma, kholi no. 420, maa ka aashirwad…as the contestant slowly goes up the ladder of success." And in case you are wondering what champu means, the answer is 'idiot'. No lifeline there.

I use telepathy on KBC: SRK

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, the new superstar host of quiz show "Kaun Banega Crorepati" (KBC), says his prime concern is not so much TV ratings but to keep contestants happy.

Shah Rukh, who faced a lot of scepticism after taking over from Amitabh Bachchan as the host of KBC, also says he knows from the audience reaction that he is doing a good job.

I'm not asexual, I'm just shy: Shah Rukh Khan

Born a Muslim and brought up as a Hindu, Shah Rukh Khan is very sad to see the happenings in the Islamic world. The reigning star of Bollywood says he "needs to be standing for the goodness of Islam".

Stating that he is "truly" an ambassador for Islam, Shah Rukh says his childhood fascination with the Ram Lila hasn't changed. "But as I've grown older, and I see what's happening to Islam around the world, I think it's important that even without full knowledge of Islam, I need to be very clearly standing for the goodness of Islam."

In an interview with the weekly newsmagazine Tehelka, the star who is married to a Hindu and whose children are being brought up by the tenets of religions, says he stands for what a modern Muslim should be.

"I'd like people to know that Islam is not only about being a fanatic, or radically different, angered person, or one who only does jehad. I'd like people to know that the actual meaning of jehad is to overcome one's own violence and weakness. If need be, overcome it violently," says Shah Rukh.

In a deeply personal interview that gives a rare insight not only into his identity as a Muslim but also a husband, father, son and brother, Shah Rukh says of his elder sister: "My sister reminds me everyday that I cannot have a life like my father's."

The superstar, who has often spoken of his anguish at his parent's early death - his father when he was 15 and his mother when he was just 25 - speaks at length about his sister who "suffered a lot from their death".

"And I had a sister who was not well at all. Lala. She's much better now, but she'll never be fully well. Beautiful girl - physically and mentally, again an MA, LLB (like his father). But no good. After my father died, she got very shocked. Psychiatry wasn't so big then, it took us about four or five years to find help. Then it took five - six years for her to get very close to her mom, and then her mom died, so she was really shattered.

"Medically termed, she had a potassium imbalance. Physically, she started going very wrong."

By the time she came to Mumbai, she was really unwell, says Shah Rukh. "It took time for me to earn enough - during 'Dilwale Dulhaniya...' I took her to a doctor in London. Now, she's all right. Matlab, she'll never be fully all right, but she's better than what she was. She lives with me."

When he prays, the actor says, the closest he comes to a face are his mother and father - and his dogs! "I love my dog - Chewbacca. Is that blasphemous?"

And for those who have often wondered why Shah Rukh Khan talks so much about his son Aryan and so little of his daughter Suhana, here's the answer: "It's not that I'm not proud of her. In fact, I'm more proud of her in a certain way than even my son perhaps. But I'm shy of women.

"It's very shocking, but even with her friends, I can't play for too long. I think girls should be left on their own. And I've got this thing - I've never seen the inside of my wife's cupboard, or her handbag, or her drawers, or whatever. I've been married since '91, and I can't do it. I think a woman should have a lot of privacy. I'm like that even with my daughter."

He admits that most of his closest friends are women - Farah Khan, Juhi Chawla and Kajol - and most his male friends like Karan Johar are not very macho either.

About his much discussed "asexuality": "Its not asexuality. I'm just shy of women. I wouldn't know how to pick up a lover. If that's the right word to use."

"Sometimes girls say they like me. I don't know what to say, so before she thinks I'm foolish or asexual, I just say something funny. The best way to kill romance is to joke. And, again it's that conservative thing - I can't make the first move..."

Often castigated for dancing in marriages for money, Shah Rukh answers why and how: "I do perform at weddings. But it is very difficult to afford what I demand. You have to do it like a show, it has to be in an area where nobody drinks and eats, it will start at 9 p.m. and end at 11.30 p.m., the stage will be 30 by 40 feet, we will make our entries, we will not chat with anyone, we will not eat your food, we will not take pictures with your daughter or daughter-in-law, unless we personally want to. We will come, perform, and we will go away."

Discussing films, he says he simply that he doesn't watch them. "I get corrupted. When I see a good film and it doesn't do well, or I see a bad film, and it does well, it confuses me. I saw 'Rang De Basanti'. It was very well done. I was supposed to do a part in it. It was lying with me for about a year. I was shocked by the fact that I couldn't read into the script. I just didn't see any of it."

Shah Rukh also admits that he didn't like close friend Aditya Chopra's hit film "Dhoom 2" because it lacked sensibility.

"It's not true that Salman has asked me to ……," SRK!

by Debasis Jana

SRK has a heart of gold. Recently on a KBC show, he has given away a very expensive branded watch to a contestant. There is rumour that Shah Rukh did so after Salman goaded him to do so. But when we asked SRK, he smiled mysteriously and said, "No, it's not true that Salman asked me to give it, though I must admit that I was inspired by him and Sanju who are always giving away expensive watches to their friends and fans. I felt very bad for this guy who lost on my show. I just wanted to make him happy. And it feels good doing that."

Shah Rukh is not a big star only but a big-hearted man also.

I want everyone to win from KBC: Shah Rukh Khan

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan , the new superstar host of quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), says his prime concern is not so much TV ratings but to keep contestants happy.
