Ok now for some serious stuff and fun stuff. Some of you may be wondering what is so special about Benaras (Balaji Telefilms serials favourite haunt ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) and why are you seeing so much of people, activity and worship over there. Though as usual BT has its own version of the reality. ๐Ÿ˜†.....never mind...So here is a lowdown. Have summarised certain key points for you. If you find it interesting please read....it also forms the backdrop for my next instalment ๐Ÿ˜‰

What is Benaras?

Varanasi also commonly known as Benares or Banaras is a city situated on the banks of the river Ganga (Ganges) in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (northern India). Alternately known as Kashi, it is regarded holy by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains, and is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. The author Mark Twain once said: "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together". ๐Ÿ˜† Hindus believe that one who is graced to die on the land of Varanasi would attain salvation and freedom from the cycle of birth and re-birth.

Benaras is of course famous for its "Ghats" (this is what you see mostly picturised in Kasturi), numbering a 100. A ghat is essentially a series of well-paved steps that lead to the water. A ghat in Benaras usually has small temples built into its side, while the larger structures, housing the powerful gods and goddesses from the Hindu religion, form a formidable backdrop to the serene beauty of the meandering Ganges river. For centuries, the Hindus considered it very auspicious to bathe at the ghats of Benaras. Everyday at dawn thousands of pilgrims can be seen offering salutations to the Sun God in waist-deep water, secure in their conviction that the waters of the Ganges will wash away all the accumulated sins of their life. The oil lamps (diyas) and flowers set afloat on the river at dusk make a fascinating sight. (This is what Kasturi was doing some days back)

The city is famous for its various temples. Kashi Vishwanath Mandir is considered the most important Jyotirlinga (shrine associated with Lord Shiva) in India.

Although Benaras is famous as a Hindu pilgrimage center, it also has a distinct Muslim heritage. The powerful Sultans of Delhi and later the Mughal emperors (notably Aurangzeb) were instrumental in constructing several mosques, and this predominantly Hindu city gradually attained a degree of cosmopolitanism. The great mosque of Benaras, Gyanvyapi Masjid, has minarets towering 71 m above the Ganges and is an integral part of the city's skyline.

The city has been the seat of learning since time immemorial. Tulsi Das (a Hindu saint poet) composed Ram Charit Manas in Benaras. Banaras Hindu University, popularly called BHU, is perhaps the largest residential University in India.

Benaras has been a cultural and religious center in northern India for several years. Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath near Kashi.A particular style of classical Hindustani music developed in Varanasi since centuries ago. Many prominent Indian philosophers, poets, writers, and musicians resided or reside in Varanasi. They include Kabir, Ravi Das, Munshi Premchand (famous Hindi author), Jaishankar Prasad, Acharya Ram Chandra Shukla, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Hariprasad Chaurasia, and Ustad Bismillah Khan.

Varanasi is a noted centre for embroidery work, silk weaving and brassware. Fine silks and brocaded fabrics, exquisite saris, brassware, jewellery, woodcraft, carpets, wall hangings, lamp shades and masks of Hindu and Buddhist deities are some of its shopping attractions. The city is also renowned for its musical instruments such as Sitar, Tabla and Shehnai. And yes, last but not the least any discussion on Banaras cannot be complete without mentioning the mouth-watering mithais (sweets) and Paan (betel leaf). ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Krishi

Haan yaar ๐Ÿ˜ ...paan with supari shavings and lots of that Gulkand ๐Ÿ˜› ...hai paapi pet and personal greed for success ke liye hum kya kuch chod aaye hain ๐Ÿ˜ญ ..Krishi, you know just eating a simple pani-puri/ gol-gappa at the streetside and we used to maska marofy the pani-puri wala for extra water in the end ๐Ÿ˜† or shayad tune khaye honge...ice-golas, uspe kala khatta mixture ๐Ÿ˜† and noisily slurp away to glory ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ....hai those were the days ๐Ÿ˜ณ ...To quote Anupam Kher from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (hope I got the dialogue correctly ๐Ÿ˜† )..."Jo Chenab river mein baat hai woh Thames river mein kahaan "๐Ÿ˜†

I wrote that cause there are many here who may not know why forever there is a puja happening in Benaras or why people really go there...Mujhe bhi thoda info pata tha aur thoda search karna pada๐Ÿ˜Š...but it felt nice to read about some of the good things like the various noted musicians, scholars associated with it ๐Ÿ˜ณ and the universities.

Chal later on the spoof lihti hun ๐Ÿ˜‰

take care yaar

PS : Krishi, as an aside and back to the serial, did you see Kasturi walking on glass pretending it is coal and that too barefoot ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ...Thank God they didnt call it Sita ki Agni Pariksha or Draupadi ka Thaipusam wala walk... ๐Ÿ˜† That would have been too much๐Ÿคฃ....But sab maaf coz the rockstar smiled yesterday ......yeahhhhhhhh......muahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh โค๏ธ ...it reminded me once again why I am still sticking on watching this Yeh meri kahaani hai ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜†
