Creative heads and senior artistes talk to Riya V Anandwala about the new faces on 'K' television today Ipsita Deb, Creative Head I see Pallavi Subhash as the next Tulsi or Parvati. She's a classic Balaji heroine. In fact, I think Pallavi's the best among the new lot of actresses. Apara Mehta The way things stand on television, it seems like anyone can become an actor. But Pallavi's a pretty good performer and I attribute that to her theatre background. Nivedita Basu Pulkit's character, Lakshya, is a very simple and lovable boy and he's become very popular among the youth. Hiten Tejwani, co-star Pulkit Samrat certainly has the poten- tial, that's how he bagged Kyunkii.. in the first place. Nivedita Basu, Senior Creative Head Jay Bhanushali is popular because of his chocolate- boy image. He can't play mature characters for a while. Ronit Roy Jay is affable. He has grown into his character, Neev and is doing full justice to it. But he needs experience before getting into other roles. Nivedita Basu The audience can connect with Shubhangi because she has a very mid- dle-class look. I think she's on her way to becoming another Prerana. Rupa Ganguly, co-star Shubhangi is a quick learner. She's got a very expressive face and her dialogue delivery is good as well. Nivedita Basu Panchi Bora is quite popular with the teens because of her young, fresh looks. It's a little too soon to talk about her future, but I don't think she will be able to do aggressive roles. Ronit Roy, co-star Panchi's performance doesn't come across as practised or forced. She's soft- spoken and her dialogue delivery is very natural. Experience and time will make her a better performer.

Inner strength

Need time off: Prriya Ary
With two soaps (Kasturi and Left Right Left) in her kitty plus a cameo in Kasamh Se, Prriya Ary is left with very little time for herself.

Due to her hectic schedules, Prriya doesn't get time to meditate which is a must-do on her list for peace of mind.

"Off late, I haven't been getting time to meditate. I intend to take time out for at least 30 a day and devote it to meditation.

It gives me inner strength," says Prriya.

You were pretty excited when you joined Kasturi , so why this decision to quit it?

l I am still excited while giving each shot, as I have been given complete freedom to develop the character as I please, which is rare. That's what makes working with Ekta Kapoor's prodution house a treat.

Trouble is that the story is not what had been narrated to me initially, which I guess often happens in dailies, due to which my dates are not being adequately and consistently used.

What does Ekta Kapoor have to say about your decision?

She's cool about it, I guess. I haven't really faced any trouble getting a positive reply to my resignation. Also, I tried to get in touch with her regarding this, but it seems like she is busy. However, Nivedita Basu, on her behalf seemed to synpathise with me.

She said she realises how frustrated I might be feeling. Besides, I had informed Nivedita of my intentions a very long time back, way before I formally put in my papers on July 23, in which I clearly stated that it was a pleasure working with them and that I would render my services till whenever needed as per my contract so as not to jeopardise smooth proceedings. I'll be shooting for Kasturi till August 23.

Aren't you worried that you'll be in Ekta's bad books?

Look, I'm sure Ekta isn't one of the country's most powerful media personalities for nothing. I'm sure she can identify professionalism, talent and honesty. And besides, before this decision we have been on excellent terms with each other, so I hope things are seen in the right perspective.

Also this channel has a deal with Ekta where actors quitting her serials do not get any other shows?

Now, wait a minute! How can you suppress the fragrance of an open perfume bottle... you shut the doors the fragrance will ooze out... that's what an actor is like or any artist for that matter. There will always be some platform available for me to act.

And why would anybody ban me in the first place? For being absolutely professional, for being good looking or for being a good actor?

(laughs). On a more serious note, I have stood up to the occassion whenever any channel or producer has demanded it even if it meant staying in the vanity van for a couple of days for Kesar when there were telecast issues.

So when there is hardcore meaningful work people do realise who to count on and who not to.

So, what are your future plans?

Sure, I am looking at some exciting scripts. I am heading for Goa after my Kasturi commitments to shoot for a swimwear brand for a friend where I can unveil my six-pack that I have been desperately wanting to do (laughs).

Also on the cards is helping my fiancee Neha with her new trouseau sleepwear line which she plans to launch here and abroad.

When is the wedding?

Neha and I are getting married on December 5.

When acting happened by chance!

Mumbai, the city of dreams, beckons all. While some chase their dreams, there are others whom dreams chase. We spoke to a few television artistes to whom acting happened by chance and brought them name and fame.

Achint Kaur: Plays Vedika in Sony's Virrudh
Well, it is a very long story and I don't want to bore you with the details. I always wanted to be an achiever. I was preparing for the Indian Police Services when I got married. Even in those days, I used to crave for fame. I experimented a lot, like in designing. But acting came to me on a platter. Someone offered me a role and I thought of giving it a try. So frankly speaking, I never dreamt of getting into the television industry. It was a total fluke.

Gaurav Khanna: Plays Ruhaan in Zee TV's show Meri Doli Tere Angana
I came to Mumbai in July 2003 for reasons no way related to acting. I came here to do my MBA and after completing it, I worked as a marketing manager in a firm for nine months. Acting was never on the cards. One day, I was exercising at the gym when a person, taking me for a professional model, approached me with an advertisement offer. I took it up and then continued in the same line. Till now, I have done over a dozen advertisements and also walked many ramps.

Payel Sarkar: Plays Shruti in SAB TV's show Love Story
I'm from Bengal and I had never thought that I would become an actress. I was doing my graduation and working when I started getting offers from the film industry so I thought of giving it a try.

Shubhangi Atre: Plays Kasturi in Star Plus's show Kasturi.
I was a dancer when I landed a few advertisement offers. After that, a photographer friend of mine urged me to try my luck at the auditions of Balaji in Pune. Though I auditioned for Kasturi, I was given a role in Kasautii…. It's only last night that I was told about being selected to play the lead in Kasturi.

Rati Pandey: Plays Prarthana in Zee TV's show Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai
I was always interested in business since I have studied commerce. I came to Mumbai to try my luck in the glamour world. Somehow, Ajay Sinha saw my pictures and called me for auditions. Unfortunately, that project got shelved, but I stayed back in the city and tried in other production houses. Within 15 days, I started getting offers. So this is how it all began.

Mishal Raheja: Plays Akash in SAB TV's show Love Story.

I'm a Mumbai boy and I did my graduation from HR College. Then I went to America for further studies. I also worked in New York for sometime but I was not getting the mental satisfaction I was looking for. I always felt that I should go back to India and fulfill my dreams. And ultimately that's what I did. I came back to India and here I'm, acting.

Pariva Pranati: Lead in Sunjoy Wadhwa's yet-to-be-titled show.
I did my college from Delhi and like many other girls, I wanted to enter the glamour world. Thus, I came to Mumbai to get into the television industry. I got my portfolio done before starting out in acting.

Nikkhil Arya quits Kasturi

Nikkhil Arya, after quitting Balaji's soap, Kesar, was back to be part of their new show Kasturi in a negative role. But now he has quit that serial too. He says "the role wasn't turning out the way it was narrated. I play a villain. He is the epitome of evil and gradually various interesting layers of my character were to be revealed but it seems to be stuck in a rut for now," says Nikkhil, who was recently seen as Aseem in Kyunki. "When I told Ekta about my problem she understood." He claims, "I want powerful roles that drive the story. I will shoot for Kasturi till August 23 by then they will decide what to do with the role."

But isn't he scared to leave Ekta? "I respect Ekta. She is a powerful producer but she is also very professional and frank. I am on good terms with her so I am fine." What are your other options? "I want to anchor shows and also try my hand at comedy. And if films happen why not?" For now he will be spending time with fiancee Neha and shopping for her trousseau. Nikhil will also help her launch a sleepwear line in India and abroad. The duo will get married in December.

Why are Karan and Amita not rehearsing for 'Nach Baliye' together?

Posted: Sept 11th 2007 by Ruhi Tandon

Karan Patel AKA Robbie with his 'Nach Baliye 3' partner Amita Chandekar

There seems to be clash between Karan and Amita. It you are expecting some break-up rumor; Well, I am sorry to break it to you but, there's no clash with their personalities but, it happens to be a conflict with their hectic shooting schedule that's keeping the two star contestants from rehearsing together for their upcoming 'Nach Baliye 3'.

Robbie's character is central and Karan has to put in long hours on the sets of 'Kasturi' and this barely leaves any open time for dance rehearsals. However; what works to Karan's advantage is that he has been with Shiamak for years and he is able to pick steps in a snap but, Amita has a though time matching his energy so she instead is busy rehearsing.

At Shiamak's, Karan was a close buddy of Shahid Kapoor as the two would rehearse for hours, so let's wait and watch if Shahid comes to promote Karan and cheers for his 'Nach Buddy'.

Mixing business with… business!
Making A Scene: Udita Goswami, Karan Patel and Tusshar Kapoor on the sets of Kasturi
Ekta Kapoor incorporated brother Tusshar's film Aggar in her TV show Kasturi over the weekend. Tusshar, along with co-stars Udita Goswami and Shreyas Talpade had shot for a special episode.

The plot of the episode went thus: Robbie (Karan Patel) is rehearsing alone in his studio and thoughts of Kasturi's are playing on his mind.

At one point while drumming intensely, he loses control of the sticks and they fly out of his hands. As he moves to retrieve them, he sees a movie shoot in a rehearsal studio nearby.

In the scene, Tusshar demands to know why Udita wants to leave him and go back to her husband. Robbie imagines Kasturi and himself in the actors' place and butts into the scene. He pushes Tusshar away, holds Udita and yells, 'Kasturi, are you okay?'

Tusshar then rebukes him for ruining the scene and Robbie comes to his senses and apologises. Such drama, we tell you!
