Q You had auditioned for Kasturi but ended up making your debut in Kasauti. Do you think you were at the right place at the right time because the show you had originally auditioned for finally came your way?

Absolutely. Though I had auditioned for Kasturi I was selected to play Sanchi in Kyunki. But the role didn't happen and I was asked to play Palchin in Kasauti which was a very important character. But one-and-half months later I had to quit Kasauti to play the main protagonist in Kasturi. I guess patience pays. Being at the right place at the right time also makes a lot of difference.

Q Which serial do you like more, Kasauti or Kasturi?

Both are good shows. Kasauti is an old serial and is also very popular whereas Kasturi is only eight weeks old. But I can relate to my role in Kasturi because I am very much like Kasturi, simple, middle class upbringing and believe in family values. What works for Kasturi is the contrast between the middle class and super rich which creates all the drama.

Q The simple middle class girl has fallen in love with a brat rock star Robbie Sabharwal. Where is the love story headed now?

I wouldn't know because changes take place everyday. Right now the love story is being played out but I am not sure where the story is headed. However, having fallen in love with a rich guy Kasturi has realised the class difference between her and Robbie. I don't think life is going to be easy for her.

Q Being a newcomer how difficult was it for you to play the role?

I found acting quite difficult in the beginning when I was doing Kasauti. But Shweta (Tiwari) and my director helped me a lot in getting my shots right. Since I had already worked for Kasauti for six weeks it wasn't all that difficult for me to play this role. However, working for Kasturi has been hectic. I didn't go home during the first eight days and even fainted twice on the sets because of stress. Now things have settled down.

Q How is your husband reacting to your star status? Are you able to give enough time to him and your baby?

I must admit that I am quite short on time. But I bring my baby on the sets for a few hours. My husband also visits the set some times. He is supportive and guides me on how to conduct myself.

Priya wants to quit Left Right Left

She loves her role of a tough and strict warden Subedar Maj. Lolita Sen in Left Right Left. "It's a nice Bengali woman's character who acts very tough with the cadets but is actually a softie and I love playing the role," says Priya Arya. But the reason behind her wanting to quit the show is her outright negative role in Kasturi. "Alka is the backbone of the show and she will go to any length to make Kasturi unhappy. It's the main negative lead character in the serial and I want to give it my best," says Priya who feels guilty for not paying enough attention to her role in Left Right Left. "Because of me they are going through a mess. Either I make them relieve me early or they have to cancel my scenes and rewrite the script. I don't want my producer to go through more problems. I am quite emotionally attached to the show but I think I better be little more practical. I got Kasturi because of Left Right Left. Ekta liked my performance and offered me this meaty role and therefore Kasturi is very important to me." In daily soaps, in her opinion, only the main female protagonist and the main negative character get the best scenes, dialogues and maximum screen space. "Kasturi is my first break in a major negative character and I want to give it my best." (A.L.C)

She has produced one of the most successful films of the year (read Shootout at Lokhandwala) but Ekta Kapoor is more excited about her TV series Khwahish, the first Indian serial that is being legally shown in Pakistan.

"To me the big Sony event at the moment is Khwahish, a soap that we produced in Dubai for the Middle Eastern market. We shot it on neutral land since we didn't want any legal or political repercussions".

"It's already been aired in Pakistan," Ekta told IANS.

"So far our shows were being shown illegally in Pakistan. Our Kasautii Zindagii Kay is huge in Pakistan. Now we've given them the first official Balaji soap and they love it," she added.

The Pakistanis are really keen to meet Ekta and she's planning a trip to Karachi and Lahore very soon.

"My creative director Nivedita Basu had gone to Pakistan. And she got a very warm welcome. We held a talent hunt for Khwahish there. The principal male lead is from Pakistan. And now Khwahish will start to air on Sony in a fortnight."

She is also going to produce a reality show for Sony Entertainment. For that she teams up with Sanjay Gupta with whom Ekta produced the successful thriller Shootout At Lokhandwala.

"We've just got a confirmation letter. It's going to be the biggest reality show ever in the country. I can't give out more details right now," said Ekta.

"But it's like nothing that has been done so far. I've waited so long to do a reality show. Sanjay and I wanted to get it right before getting it on the road," she added.

The Ekta-Gupta reality show starts in January 2008. One of Ekta's old serials Kya Haadsa Kya Haqueeqat is also resuming on Sony.

Ekta's latest alliance with STAR for the daily soap Kasturi is a big success.

"It's mom's favourite and therefore my favourite," said Ekta. "We've made sure it's got some worthwhile talent. We got the Punjabi stage and film actress Sheeba Chadha to play one of the leads. She didn't want to do television. But we made it worth her while. See how classy she is!

"My Kasturi hero and heroine played supporting roles in other Balaji roles. I was discouraged from taking them on. But I'm willing to take on new talent even if I see potential in a peon at Balaji. In that sense I'm very much like Ram Gopal Varma."

Ekta rubbishes all rumours that her large-screen gangster satire C Company is a take-off on Varma.

"The film has nothing to do with Ramu. I love his cinema. C Company has no spoof on Ramu's cinema. In fact, it will do a take-off on our company Balaji Telefilms."

Amita Chandekar is dating her Kasturi co-star Karan Patel

SHE IS THE ONE: Karan Patel
Amita Chandekar (Pooja of Kasturi) formerly seen in Sony's CID and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, is dating her Kasturi co-star Karan Patel.

Sources reveal that love blossomed on the sets and the two have been dating for over a month now.

A friend of Amita reveals, "Yes, there's definitely something cooking between Amita and Karan.

They enjoy each other's company and are seen dancing at parties."

Interestingly, eyewitness accounts report that at Gouri Tonkk's birthday bash last month the two were even seen smooching.

IS IT HIM? Amita Chandekar
Since then, both Karan and Amita have been meeting off the sets and are in touch regularly.

When contacted Chandekar doesn't deny that she is fond of Karan and says, "Of course he's a very dear friend. But I wouldn't want to discuss my private life."

However, she prefers talking about her work. "I am happy with Kasturi and that the show is doing well."

Amita's co-actors in Kasturi reveal that "its very clear that they are in love.

Karan has even spoken to some of his close friends about it." Karan was unavailable for comment.

Bad boys have all the fun
13 Jul, 2007 l 0000 hrs ISTlSurbhi Gupta/TNN

On television, increasingly male negative leads are making their mark. AT gets behind the scenes...

While telly vamps Komolikas and Jigyasas have gained instant fame, slowly the small screen's male villains are also gaining popularity . Unlike Bollywood, negative characters on television have become synonymous with women on television. This is essentially because the small screen's loyal followers are mostly the fairer sex.

Says Ismail Ubarkhan, who's directing the daily soap Banoo Main Teri Dulhann, "Our audiences, a huge chunk of who are women, love women vamps. Also, they love to follow the vamps' styles in costumes and accessories." It also has to do with the fact that women rule kitchen politics , feels actor Rajiv Paul, who's played various negative characters, including one in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. He elaborates, "In a saas bahu soap, there's more politics among the women, which, frankly, is just a reflection of the society. It leaves little scope for men."

Given a choice, most male actors prefer playing negative roles on television. Sample this, some of television's bigger stars are having a great time being bad - Aman Verma (Virasaat), Ronit Roy (Kasamh se), Hiten Tejwani (Kasauti Zindagi Kay), Akashdeep Saigal, Salil Acharya (Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi), Chetan Hansraj (Virruddh), Nikhil Arya (Kasturi) and Manoje Bidvai (Meri Awaz Ko Mil Gayee Roshni).

"Positive male characters are just like furniture in soaps. All the ideal, good deeds are done by women only. Good men just stand by their women. So men can show off their acting prowess only if they play negative characters ," says actor Anupam Bhattacharya, aka Aseem Shrivastava in Durgesh Nandinii.

Paul adds that he doesn't want to play positive roles, for, "they are very boring. Negative roles have more layers to them."

Playing the bad guy also means one runs the risk of being typecast, but it is still the better option. Chetan Hansraj who has played the bad guy earlier in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and is the negative lead in Virruddh , find these roles more interesting. "They provide more scope to perform, enable the story to move forward, can be very powerful, and if done properly bring instant recognition," he says.

Probably, this is why even rank newcomers are taking the 'negative' route on television . Romit Raj, who plays Yuvraj in Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann, says that it's been "awesome" playing a bad guy. "After the creative heads showed their faith in me, I decided to go ahead with it. And it was very interesting to do the wrong things the right way. As I don't gamble , smoke or drink in real life, I got a chance to portray a completely different character on screen, which made me discover my dark side." As for getting typecast, he says, "I've already started working on my second serial, where I play a nice guy, So, I guess, it's all about proving your talent."

So do our women vamps feel comfortable now that the men are about to steal some of their thunder ? "Why not?" asks actress Kamya Punjabi, who's played many negative characters , adding, "The audience should also be given something new and different . In the end, it's only the performance that matters."

Close Up

Karan Patel
Friday, July 13, 2007 12:3:17 IST
Actor

Did you plan to become an actor?
I always wanted to become an actor. I did a formal acting course at Kishore Namit Kapoor Acting Lab.

Which was your first serial?
My first serial was 'Kahani', followed by other K serials.

Are you happy being called the Balaji boy?
I have no reasons to be unhappy about it. It is a reputed production house where all newcomers would love to work with.

Can you mention any advantage or disadvantage of being with Balaji ?
I dont find any reason to complain. Moreover, I am lucky to have started my career with Balaji.

What is your role in 'Kasturi' (Star TV)?
I play the role of Robbie Sabharval — a rich rock star, who leads a very easy—going life with no discipline whatsoever, until he meets Kasturi, when everything starts changing.

Are you happy working in 'Kasturi', which is a female- oriented show?
Yes. But I have my own personality and as far as misery for the females is concerned, males do have their own part to play.

What has been your experience working with Shubhangi?
Shubhangi is a fine co-star and a wonderful human being, so the comfort level is definitely there.

Any Bollywood offers?
Nothing in particular.

Would you like to work in Bollywood?
Definitely, provided I get proper offers.

Where would you place yourself two years from now?
As a successful actor, both on television and Bollywood.

A tough dance

Finalising couples for Nach Baliye 3 is getting harder. Some are demanding fatter pay packets while others are uncomfortable presenting themselves as a 'couple'

Sandipan Dalal and Ranjib Mazumder

Pooja Ghai and Vikas Kalantri
Thinking heads at Star One are busy finalising the line-up of celebrity couples for Nach Baliye's third season that goes on air this September. If sources are to be believed, this year has been the toughest in terms of getting telly couples to do the show. While most of the popular faces are busy with their respective soaps, a few 'out-of-work' couples have been demanding a bigger pay packet!
A reliable source from the channel informs, "They have been asking for unheard of money for the show. It's simply beyond our budget. We have had approached at least 20 couples."

Rakhi Sawant and Abhishek
Few couples, who have been secretly dating, were also not keen on coming out in public. Our sources say that a few had even taken offence when approached for the show. A source from the channel adds, "That's the biggest problem we faced this year. A few have kept their relationship under the wraps. They were extremely uncomfortable when we approached them for the show."

Trade pundits reveal that the hoopla surrounding the show (in the third season) has also died down. An actor on condition of anonymity says, "We need some new elements in the show otherwise it gets a little boring. We are expected to bring in a lot of melodrama just for the sake of it."

Kishwar and Hiten
The list so far reads, Rakhi Sawant and Abhishek Awasthi, Indraneil Sengupta and Barkha Bisht, Sandeep Baswana and Aslesha Sawant, Aamir Ali and Sanjeeda Shaikh, Kishwar Merchant and Hiten Paintal, Kiran Karmarkar and wife Rinku, Pooja Ghai and Vikas Kalantri, Kavita Kaushik and Karan Grover, Karan Patel and Amita Chandekar. The channel is yet to decide on another couple this week. Apparently, Rajshri Thakur and husband Sanjot Vaidya, Swetta Keswani and beau Alex O'Neil are in the run.

Says our source, "These eight celebrity couples have been finalised. This week we start signing the contract papers."

The channel, however, maintains a stoic silence over the show. Anil Jha from Star One says, "I have no information on Nach Baliye 3. We might not have a third season."

Indraneil and Barkha, Rinku and Kiran Karmarkar

NO WAY !

Here's a list of couples who have turned down the show:
• Iqbal Khan and wife Sneha
• Renuka Shahane and Ashutosh Rana
• Roshni Chopra and husband Siddharth Anand
• Smriti Irani and husband Zubin Irani
• Rajeev Khandelwal and Aamna Shariff
• Anita Hassanandani and Eijaz Khan

Aamir, Sanjeeda, Karan Patel, Amita

The New Balaji Boy

"Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki" was my first serial then I somehow landed myself in Kesar, from there I traveled on to Kasauti Zindagi Ki, then came Kavyanjali followed by Karam Apna Apna." says Karan Patel or better known as Robbie – The Rock Star of 'Kasturi', the new Ekta Kapoor serial on Star Plus about a middle class girl and her dreams and aspirations, which are so closely intertwined with her family.

After playing Cameos in almost all K-soaps, Karan at last finds his dream role in 'Kasturi'. Robbie Sabharwal is a famous singer and filthy rich. He is stylish, suave and completely spoilt brat. With many grey shades to his character, it seems that he is now mellowing down and falling in love. Mediacurry gives you a special dialogue with Karan Patel – on sets – 'Kasturi'- Lakhon Jaisi Par Lakhon Main Ek.

1 Robbie Sabharwal the Rockstar Vs Karan Patel

The only reason I opted to play such a grey character, besides the fact that he is the main protagonist, was that it is a very well sketched role. Give you lot of opportunity to showcase your talent. Besides talking of similarities, some things are similar some are not.

2 What are not? (We shoot)

Robbie is Naughty, Nasty & Wicked. (Laughs) I am Not.

3 What separates Kasturi from other K Serials like Kesar and Kusum

This is out–n–out a love story. It can never be similar to these soaps.

4 Balaji and Ekta

This is one production house that knows how to keep their people happy. I am very happy here and don't feel like venturing out. We usually have a picnic on the sets. This is the best star cast I have ever seen.

5 Reality shows

After watching Big Boss, I would never want to do any reality shows. Because believe me 'Fiction is bigger than reality'. In reality shows one gets stuck to their personal character, in serials you can expand. And after all how many names and faces do you remember from reality shows? (Got a point!)

6 Daily Soap Vs Weekly

I have never done a weekly so I don't know about it. But this keeps me happy though we work almost 25 days a month and 10 to 12 hours a day.

7 De-stressing factors.

Gyms are right here on the sets, besides I love horse-riding. Friends & socializing are always there.

8 Bollywood Dreams

As of now just dreams, I have aspirations to go in Bollywood. And it would happen soon. I am waiting for offers.

9 Leap Game

(Beams) There is nothing wrong with a generation leap if the script demands it. Any one who is a good actor shouldn't have issues with playing older roles. I can convincingly do it. Older characters have a right to be chic and stylish.

10 2 to 5 Years down the line

You tell me where is Shahrukh Khan today?
(He has 15 years behind him)
Then probably three levels below where he is. I try to will manage both Bolly and Telly.

11 Robbie as a Singer or Karan as a Singer

Robbies As A Singer – Rocking!
Karan As A Singer – Terrible!!

Put on your dancing shoes!
By: Tushar Joshi

In tandem: Rakhi Sawant and Abhishek Awasthi

The third season of Nach Baliye may be a few months away, but preparations for the reality show have begun. Sources report that several celebrity couples have been approached for the reality show. However, the emphasis this time around will be roping in couples where at least one half is famous (read: Hussain and his wife Tina. While the hubby is a well-known face on TV, Tina was unknown before she took the show by storm).

No major changes

A source working on the show reveals that it hasn't been easy finding 10 celebrity couples from tellywood. "There aren't that many actors who are dating or married to another celeb, so we are toying with options like roping in famous people from other walks of life. The basic idea of the show is going to remain the same — choosing the best dancing couple."

The source also adds that other elements like the judges and hosts are still being worked out, but chances are there won't be major changes. "We have already spoken to Shabbir Ahluwalia and Sangeeta Ghosh to return as the anchors. As far as the judges are concerned, they too will most likely remain the same."

As far as the couples are concerned, the biggest and the most interesting one so far is Rakhi Sawant and boyfriend Abhishek Awasthi. However, all those who have been approached or confirmed have been asked not to speak to the press. We contacted Ajay Vidyasagar, President — Content and New Media from Star One, but he remained unavailable for comment.

Couples approached for Nach Baliye 3

Indraneil and Barkha Bisht

Vikas Sethi and his wife Amita

Aamir Ali and Sanjeeda Shaikh

Rakhi Sawant and Abhishek Awasthi

Karan Patel and Amita Chandekar

Ram Kapoor and Gautami Gadgil

Eijaz Khan and Anita

Hiten Paintal and Kishwar Merchant

Another couple in Balaji camp
By: Vickey Lalwani

Priya Bathija and Jatin Shah insist they are 'just very good friends'

Kya Yahi Pyar Hai? Jatin Shah and Priya Bathija
Khwaish actress Priya Bathija and Jatin Shah (Raunak of Kasturi) are a couple. A friend of theirs reveals, "Priya and Jatin are head over heels in love.

When Priya left for Dubai to shoot Khwaish, Jatin was lonely and dejected. He misses her very much and ditto for Priya."

Fine blend

While Jatin gives the oft-repeated line that they are "just very good friends", Priya is forthcoming. Talking to HiTLIST from Dubai, she says, "I like everything about Jatin.

He respects me and we enjoy each other's company. We are not dating currently, but I don't know what tomorrow holds."

Priya met Jatin through a common friend. The source says, "After that, they met at model co-ordinator Umesh's party and exchanged numbers. The rest, as they say, is history."

Speaking about their second meeting, Priya says, "That was eight months ago. I've been in Dubai for the last five months and we haven't met up, but we are in touch."

Priya had done a blink-and-miss role in Kyunki, apart from Khwaish. "I played Mouni Roy's friend as was plump then.

After that I lost nine kilos by walking everyday for 45 minutes, I stopped eating rice and oily food and increased intake of water and vegetables. I started attending dance classes and even joined a gym," Priya says.

What's Khwaish about?
Khwaish is the tale of a young middle class girl named Afreen.

Being the eldest daughter, the family's responsibility falls on her shoulders when her father retires and her elder brother moves out.

She copes with these challenges without worrying about her own future.

The show has been shot entirely in the UAE.
