Vijay’s Rs 500-crore film Jana Nayagan pushed back, January 9 launch called off

Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan has been postponed in India just days before its scheduled theatrical release. The film was earlier set to arrive in cinemas on January 9, but the makers have now halted the release amid certification issues. The update was officially confirmed by production house KVN Productions, putting a sudden pause on one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

Sharing the announcement on X, the makers issued a statement expressing disappointment over the delay. “It is with a heavy heart that we share this update with our valued stakeholders and audiences. The release of Jana Nayagan, eagerly awaited on January 9, has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control,” the statement read.

The note further added that the decision was difficult for the entire team. “We deeply understand the anticipation, excitement, and emotions surrounding this film, and this decision has not been an easy one for any of us. The new release date will be announced at the earliest. Until then, we humbly request your patience and continued love,” the makers stated.

The postponement is linked to an ongoing certification dispute. On Wednesday, the Madras High Court reserved its order on the film’s release and directed the Central Board of Film Certification to form a fresh committee to re examine Jana Nayagan. The producers had moved the court after the film did not receive its censor certificate despite submission over a month ago.

According to reports, the CBFC had earlier suggested certain cuts and muted dialogues on December 19, but final approval remains pending. The delay has also affected overseas plans. Distributors in markets such as the UK, North America, Canada, and Malaysia have confirmed that the film will not release as scheduled.

Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, and Narain. The film has been promoted as Vijay’s final on screen appearance before his planned entry into politics. With a reported budget of Rs 500 crore, the film now awaits certification clearance and a revised release date.

Fans now await clarity as the legal process continues and producers prepare to announce steps.
