"Hi, Meher. Bahut dino se nahi mili hoon. Tum kaisi ho? Aur Preet?"

"Main toh bahut khush hoon. Preet ko abhi abhi nayi nokri mili hain. Robbie kahaan hain?"

"Acchha. Usse meri taraf se badhaai dedo. Robbie office gaya hain. Aaj ek nahi contract shuru karega."

"Par .. tum dono kaam kar rahe ho. Roshni ko kaun sambhalta hain?" inquired Meher.

"Somavaar aur mangalavaar, mein kaam karti hoon aur Robbie Roshni ke saath rehta hain. Budhvaar hum dono kaam karte hain, aur Roshni mummyji ke saath rehti hain. Gururvaar aur shukruvaar, Robbie office jaata hain, aur mein ghar pe rehti hoon. Shaniwaar aur rawivaar hum dono ki chooti hain. Robbie ki concert weekends ke waked hain, shaam ko. Toh usually, hum sab saath jaate hain, usse dekhne."

"Yeh acchha arrangement hain. Mujhe bilkool pasand nahi hain, jab ma-baap apne bacchhe ko seedhe nursery mein daalte hain. Acchha .. toh .. tum log Robbie ke concert dekhne jaate hain? Wow! Aur Roshni ko bilkool darr nahi lagta? Itne beer mein, aag aur woh flashing lights ke saath?"

"Bilkool nahin! Roshni ko abhi se sangeet ka bahut shokh hain. Raat ko, lohdi ke bagar sohti hi nahin hain! Aur jab bhi woh TV ya radio par gaana soonti hain, naachne lagti hain," answered Kasturi cheerfully.

"Aaja, Roshni, mama ke paas aaja.."

Knelt on the floor, Kasturi moved a few paces back, beckoning with her arms. One fist curled around Robbie's hand, Roshni tottered, tremulously, towards her. Finally, she managed to stumble into Kasturi's lap. Robbie and Kasturi clapped enthusiastically.

"Papa ki clever beti, hain na?" gushed Robbie, giving her a big kiss on her chubby cheek. Roshni screwed up her face and wiped it off. Kasturi giggled.

"Lagta hain Roshni ko papa ki kissy acchhe nahi lagte," she teased.

"Par tumhe toh acchhi lagta hain, na?" he rejoined, giving her a quick kiss on her cheek. She blushed deeply, protesting as usual.

Kasturi's eyes fluttered open as she felt something soft on her cheek.

"Meri pyaari biwi ko shaadi ki doosri saal gira per Mubarak. Happy Anniversary, Kasturi," said Robbie, presenting her with a single red rose.

"Tumhe yaad raha?"

"Tum bhi na, Kasturi. Mein apne zindagi ka sabse kushnaseeb din kaisa bhooloonga?"

"Woh baat sach hain. Acchha, ab tum aankhen band karlo."

"Kasturi, woh toh meri line hain. Acchha..theek hain. Karta hoon."

Kasturi squirted a drop of Hugo Boss into the air. Robbie smiled and opened his eyes.

"Wow, Kasturi, aftershave! Mujhe toh yeh bahut pasand hain."

"Jaanti hoon. Uss din, shopping centre mein tumne kitna waqt liya, dekh dekh kar. Isliye meine khareedhliya. Daresaal, mujhe bhi iski khushboo bahut pasand hain."

"Mmm..toh thoda aur pass aajao na."

"Robbie! Tum bhi na," she protested, pulling away.

"Acchha, par mazaak chod ke, thank you, Kasturi. Bahut hi acchha laga. Par tumhaare tofe ke liye tumhe thoda sa intezaar karna parega."

"Tum bhulgaye, Robbie?"

"Main kaise bhoolsakta? Par mein aur kuch nahi kahhonga. Chalo, tayaar hojao. Hum kahi jaayenge."

"Theek hain.."

"Bhaisaab, kuch acchhi si, mehngi si sari dikhaado. Aaj hamari anniversary hain, aur mein apni biwi ko sari dehne chahta hoon!"

"Acchha, toh yeh tha surprise," realised Kasturi.

"Haan, Kasturi, aaj mein tumhare liye sari choonunga," stated Robbie.

He shook his head as he looked through the saris.

"Mujhe inme se kisi pasand nahi hain. Mein tumhaare liye kuch alag sa khareedna chahta hoon. Ek minute..yeh dikhaao, bhaisaab," he decided, spotting a flash of crimson.

The shopkeeper opened it out and began his sales prattle.

"Yeh bahut hi acchhi sari hain, bilkool nayi design. Yeh material georgette hain, isliye bahut hi comfortable hain. Pallu aur blouse contrast color mein hain, gold. Par aisi waisi gold nahi, bahut hi simple sa hain. Aur pallu mein bhi itni fine embroidery hain, aisi crimson colour mein gulaab ki embroidery hain.."

"Acchhi lagi, Kasturi?"

"Bahut hi khoobsurat hain."

Roshni tugged on Kasturi's hand, pointing to a silk sari. It was deep indigo, with a diamond-encrusted border, and star-shaped diamonds studded on the pallu.

"Kya hua, Roshni? Roshni ko yeh sari acchhi lagi?" asked Kasturi.

"Acchhi toh lagengi. Roshni ki favourite colour purple, hain na?" pointed out Robbie.

Roshni grinned and nodded as she recognised the word purple.

"Hum mama ke liye yeh sari khareeenge?" asked Robbie.

Roshni nodded again.

"Bhaisaab, hum yeh dono sari lehnge."

"Theek hain. Saat hazar aur teen sor rupaiya."

Roshni pointed to herself.

"Roshni paisa dehngi? Theek hain."

Robbie counted out the notes, and carefully put them into Roshni's hand. With a shy smile, she gave them to the shopkeeper. Robbie picked up the bag, Kasturi picked up Roshni, and they left the shop.

Chapter 46 ~ Hum saath saath hain (English)

3 months later

"Hi, Meher. Haven't met you for a long time. How are you? And Preet?"

"I'm very happy. Preet has got a new job just recently. Where's Robbie?"

"Okay. Congratulate him on my behalf. Robbie's gone to the office. Today he's going to begin a new contract."

"But .. you two are working .. who looks after Roshni?" inquired Meher.

"Monday and Tuesday, I work and Roshni stays with Robbie. We both work on Wednesday and Roshni stays with mummyji. Thursday and Friday, Robbie goes to the office while I stay at home. Saturday and Sunday we both have a holiday. Robbie's concerts are at the weekends, in the evenings. So usually, we all go together to watch them."

"That's a good arrangement. I really disapprove of those parents who just stick their child straight into a nursery. Ok .. so .. you all go to see Robbie's concert? Wow! And Roshni doesn't get scared at all? In such a crowd, with the flashing lights and fire?"

"Not at all! Roshni already has a love for music. At night, she won't sleep without being sung a lullaby! And whener she hears a song on the TV or radio, she starts dancing," answered Kasturi cheerfully.

"Come, Roshni, come to mama.."

Kasturi squirted a drop of Hugo Boss into the air. Robbie smiled and opened his eyes.

"Wow, Kasturi, aftershave! I really like this one."

"I know. That day you spent so much time in the shopping centre, gazing at it . That's why I bought it for you. Actually, even I like this fragrance very much."

"Mmm..come a little closer then."

"Robbie! You're too much!" she protested, pulling away.

"Ok, but seriously, thank you, Kasturi. I really liked it. But for your present you'll have to wait a liitle."

"Did you forget, Robbie?"

"How can I forget? But I won't tell you any more. Come on, get ready. We're going somewhere."

"Ok.."

"Bhaisaab, show us some nice, expensive saris. Today it's our anniversary, and I want to gift my wife a sari!"

"Ok, so this was the surprise," realised Kasturi.

"Yes, Kasturi, today I'll choose a sari for you," stated Robbie.

He shook his head as he looked through the saris.

"I don't like any out of these. I want to buy you something different. One minute..show me this, bhaisaab," he decided, spotting a flash of crimson.

The shopkeeper opened it out and began his .

"This is a wondersul sari, completely new design. The material is georgette, so it's very comfortable. The drape and the blouse are in a contrast colour, gold. But it's not an ugly gold, its very simple, gilt-coloured.. And the pallu has such fine embroidery, decorated like roses in crimson thread."

"Did you like it, Kasturi?"

"It's very beautiful."
