Thanks a lot for the comments everyone, it means a lot to me as a writer to get these comments with people appreciating my work.
A quick update on the drives taking place: 20,131 South Asians aroundd US have signed up in the last few months. There have been 354 drives around the country and there are 31 drives remaining. I hope that one of these people is a match and that many other people benefit from this in years to come.
Now, onto the update. Hope you enjoy it.
Bani woke up the next morning and felt as if Jai had been in the same room. But thinking that it was absurd, she ignored the feeling and instead tried to get up for herself after so long. It didn't last long as her legs gave out and she was needing things for support and almost knocked the vase down. Rano heard the noise inside and came inside to help Bani get ready.
Rano: Why are you getting up? You should just rest.
Bani: Rest, rest, rest. I am tired of resting! I need to get out.
Rano: Fine, I will take you.
Bani: No! I mean… please let me do something by myself for a while.
Rano: Okay. Go ahead.
Bani called for a wheelchair and with that she was out of the room. Ranveer saw her leaving the room and came after Rano.
Ranveer: How can you let her go alone?
Rano: Ranveer, she needs to do this. She needs to get out there, she can't be protected forever. Let's go meet the doctor, remember we have an appointment.
With that said, the two of them headed to one of the most dreaded conversations with the doctor that they could ever imagine. Even before they got there, Jai was already sitting there with the doctor waiting for them to come.
Doctor: Sit down, I have a few things to inform all of you.
Ranveer: What is it? Just come out and say it.
Doctor: We did a bone marrow test match for all of you and I am sorry to tell you that none of you match.
Ranveer: What do you mean it doesn't match?
Doctor: Usually for a bone marrow transplant, we get a family member, especially siblings, but in your case it didn't match.
Ranveer: Why? What is wrong with me? Why do I feel so useless?
Rano: Ranveer, control yourself. You know as well as I do that none of this is your fault. We will find someone who does match?
Jai: What about mine?
Doctor: As I said, none of yours matched.
Jai: How can none of us match? That's ridiculous.
Doctor: The chances of you matching are 1 in 20,000. We are looking at the registry and we have two people who might match.
Jai: That's great then, what are we waiting for?
Doctor: It's not that simple.
Jai: Why the heck not?
Doctor: There is a chance that though the match, they may not want to donate any longer.
Jai: Why would anyone say no to saving a life?
Doctor: There are a lot of reasons. When these drives take place, many people sign up because it's the "right" thing to do and not because they really feel for it. Or it could just simply be that they are in a phase of their life where they already have many problems of their own and cannot donate so easily.
Jai: Just tell me who these people are… I will convince them.
Doctor: The hospital does not disclose things like that.
Jai: So what are we supposed to do? Just sit around and watch as everything does itself.
Doctor: To tell you the truth… that is really all you guys can do right now.
Jai rushed out the door and slammed the door really hard. Ranveer, on the other side, sat down onto the seat as if giving up and for the first time since everything had unraveled itself, he broke down crying.
Ranveer: What am I going to do? She will be fine, right? She has to be fine.
Rano: Of course she will.
Rano took Ranveer into her arms and consoled him while he cried in her lap. She, herself, fought to keep her tears from falling. Both of them couldn't break down at the same time, they had to be there for Bani.
Bani, on the other hand, was making her way around the hospital and found the recreation room, the things that attracted her in that room was a piano, on the corner, untouched. She made her way to the piano, ignoring everyone's stare. It looked absolutely new as if no one had ever played it before. As soon as she put her hands on the piano, she was lost in another world. Bani closed her eyes and let her emotions play. Her mind flashed back to the day the doctor had told her that she had leukemia, to the time when Jai had played with her emotions and feelings. The first tear drop, she hadn't allowed herself to cry for a really long time but finally it dropped. By the time she was done, there was a crowd around her applauding her. A little shocked by her outburst of emotions, Bani smiled awkwardly at everyone and tried to wheel herself out but was stopped by a girl.
Naina: Bani? Is that you?
Bani took a second before realizing who that was.
Bani: Oh my God, Naina is that you!
Naina: Wow, it has been so long since we have met.
Bani: What are you doing here?
Naina: I volunteer here, to work with the kids.
Bani: That's so sweet of you.
Naina: You played that so well.
Bani: I am surprised myself, it looks really new, how long has it been here?
Naina: It is new, someone donated it yesterday, he remains anonymous.
Bani: Do you know who it is?
Naina: Yes, but I cant tell you.
Bani: Don't worry I don't need a name, but can you give him a note from me?
Naina: For sure.
Bani: Okay, wait for a second.
Bani wrote a quick note and gave it to Naina. Her hands hurt even though she had written a small letter. After talking for a few minutes, Naina and Bani went their different ways. Naina took the letter and gave it to Jai who was just standing behind the door and had heard Bani's piano playing talent. He opened up the letter and read it.
Hey Stranger,
I know its weird that I am writing you such a letter but this is just to say a quick thank you. There are a lot of people who donate a lot of money to the hospital in terms of machine and medicine (which is necessary and useful) but you donated a piano which helps me in ways you can't even imagine.
Thanks a whole lot from the bottom of my heart,
Bani Dixit.
Jai took the letter smiled and knew exactly what he had to do.
