Bani knew in heart of heart that was it. Her days in Mcholy hospital was over.
He spoke after a deliberation. 'Ms dixit.. into my office..'
5
Bani heaved a sigh of and sat down, staring at the close door.
'I m sorry Ms. Braganza.. I have no control over my tongue. It slips before I know it.
Rita Braganza nodded.
'So that's it. It was nice working with you and Lata'
Ms. Braganza nodded again. The woman was in shock.
Dr.Walia sat down behind his desk recalling the conversation. Not conversation he corrected his thought rather an outburst from Bani dixit.
"FOR YOUR INFORMATION I DID NOT DELAY YOUR WORK. YOUR SCRIBBLED WRITING DID. I AM NO MAGAICIAN THAT I CAN GUES WHATS AFTER P, B AND OR ARE THEY REALLY P, B OR D?'
It's been years since anyone had complained about his writing. The last woman who had complained was his governess Ms. Chantal. Many years later, it was Ms. Dixit who had problems with his P, Band D.
Bani walked along the corridor to his office. She stood outside for a moment, .knocked the door and went in. He was standing near the window facing his back to her.
Bani cleared her throat.
He turned and walked towards his desk and sat on it not taking his eyes of her. Bani felt uncomfortable at his stare. Well what's taking him to say something she thought. She knew why she had been called into his office. She was waiting to hear from him.
The silence was killing her. 'You wanted me here Doctor.' She asked.
He nodded. There was no regret on her face. She stood fearlessly in front of him. She was as confident and bold. He admired her guts. She was a different girl for a change.
'Am I fired?' the question surprised him and Bani.
'Why?' he asked looking intently at her.
'I presumed the way I behaved was…..'
Unfathomable?' he finished for her.
She looked lost for words and he could see her pretty head shake in denial. Before she could say something and damage the chance of working there he said.. "okay..'
'Do you always speak your mind Ms. Dixit?'
She nodded fearing if she said something it would ruin her chance to continue there.
'Are you not afraid of the consequences?' he asked.
She shook her head bringing locks of her hair on to her shoulder.
He was mesmerized for a moment.. she shoved her hair back breaking the spell.
Jai averted his gaze.
'I have no control over my tongue. It slips before I realize.' She was honest.
He was impressed by her honesty.
"Okay..' he said getting up and shoving his hands in his pants pocket.
She looked intently at him. Catching him off balance at her innocent stare.
Jai……. Man…. she is a child. He warned.
'Ms.Dixit…' he cleared his throat. 'What do you suggest I do with my P , B and D?'
The situation looked very comical in her eyes. She couldn't suppress her laughter.
Laughter tore through her chest filling the room.
The unexpected happened. Dr. Walia, who seldom laughed, laughed along with her.
Bani's gaze softened at the sound of his laughter.
'Tell me what I do with you?' he asked gaining his composer.
'Excuse me?'
'I mean what do I do with my P, B and D?' He asked looking intently at her.
'Well you could record the letters in your voice doctor rather than noting it down and you speech too. That would be easier for you and for me it saves time.' She looked eagerly at him.
He looked thoughtful.
'Don't you think so?' she prompted.
'Mm…. now get going do your work now. Ms. Braganza will help you. I am sure she doesn't have any problem with my writing.'
'Yes sir..' she walked to the door and turned. 'Thank you..'
'You are welcome….. By the ways Ms. Dixit, how old are you?
'Crossed nineteen.'
Bani left his office cheerfully thanking God. She almost believed she had lost her job.
She promised herself not to say or do things that would cause her job?
Bani were more than delighted when she received her pay check. She would give small treat to her neighbors and take boys for a movie. She would save little money for her further education. She would take up a course in computer. Let us see.. She decided. She will have to secure her future.
She was filing the last letter Tarun Walked in.
'Hi beautiful..' he greeted her cheerfully .
'hi Sablok'.
'tarun' he said.
'Tarun.' She repeated.
'Where are my ladies?' he asked looking around the room and picking up a magazine from her desk.
Ms. Braganza went to get coffee and Lata went for a round as usual.
'Perfect,' he said towering over her head and taking interest in her work. 'Why don't you join me for a coffee in the evening?'
'well.. I ….'
'Please….'
'Okay then at 4.30' she gave in.
He smiled at her.
Tarun picked her up from the hospital in the evening and they headed to the coffee shop.
'The best coffee in town is served here.' Saying that he led her inside. The coffee shop was crowded. Bani sat near the entrance. She loved to watch people.
Tarun ordered coffee and sat opposite her.
'Tell me Bani….. I can call you Bani right?' he asked.
She nodded.
'Well where were you before Mcholy happened?'
'I was working for a garment factory.
'That's interesting..' he said starting a conversation.
'Not at all..' she denied. 'I hated there..'
'Oh'.
'What about you?
'I have been in this field for years. It's kind of interesting.
The coffee arrived with a little bite from the confectionary. She sipped the coffee and said.' It's wonderful indeed.'
'Thank you..' Tarun was beginning to like her manners the unexpected thing happened.
Bani got a shock of her life. She saw the man walk into the coffee shop.
He stood at the door and craned his head from left to right.. His eyes reverted and fixed on her face.
Bani froze. That's him she thought the man from the market.
'Are you okay?' Tarun asked looking at her white face.
Bani seemed not to have heard him. Her eyes and ears were fixed on the man. She saw him snap open his eyes. Bani wasted no time she pushed back her chair and got up grabbing her bag and marched in front not hearing Tarun's bewildered voice or noticing a waiter carrying a cake. She collided with him in her haste. The cake went flying from his hand and landed on the man.
He sweared and screamed. He took the contents from his chest and face and threw it at her in anger. She decked in time and it landed on the woman who was seated beside her. Bani wasted no time she ran out of the coffee shop. She bumped into Roshni and Jai.
'Hey you.. look where you are going..' snapped Roshni.
'Sorry..' she looked at the couple.
'You?.. Watch where you are going..' Roshni snapped again. Bani ignored the woman and looked at Jai walia.
'If I were You I wouldn't go in there..' saying that she walked briskly out of sight.
'Come on Jai… Roshni pulled his sleeve and marched in. she jumped out instantly screaming. Jai took a step back and looked at Roshni. Her face was covered with some sticky stuff.. 'What the hell?' she shouted.
Jai stepped aside and gave her his hand kerchief.
'I'll take this people to court..' she threatened.
'Calm down Roshini..' Jai looked at the shop confusingly. Precisely Tarun walked out of the shop grumbling. He looked a mess his shirt was soiled. He stopped on his track as he spotted Jai.
'Jai..'
'Tarun what's going on in there?' Jai asked curiosity getting better of him
"Oh don't ask buddy…' he said ruffling his hair.
'That bad?'
'Bad? Oh God ….buddy I took a disastrous girl for a coffee and I don't remember what happened? '
'Disastrous gir?'
'Yeah Jai you do know her…
Jai frowned.
Your assistant Bani dixit … you had no right to hire her Jai. I'll never forgive you for this.
A slow smiled tugged at his lips at the mention of Bani's name.
'I am sorry Tarun..'
'You should be… keep her away from me Jai I don't know what I'll do next time I see her.' Tarun left them in hurry.
'What do you think she might have done?' asked Roshni.'
Jai shrugged his shoulders.
