Jai put the recorder on the bench he was sitting and looked at the beautiful garden. The weather was misty. The garden looked more beautiful than ever. A girl appeared suddenly from the bushes and sat beside him. She had an angelic face and a beautiful curly hair. She looked intently at him and smiled. In spite of his confusion he smiled at the girl. She tipped her head and spoke in her angelic voice.
'Dr Walia.. You look so tired. Stop working so hard. Look at you.. You poor thing.. .' saying that she touched his face. 'Look, there are lines around your eyes..' she looked sympathetically at him tracing her soft fingers around his eyes.
'Who are you?' he asked her in a daze.
She smiled tossing her head. Coils of curly her fell on her shoulder.
'You look so.. very..em… familiar..' he said staring at her. The angelic face smiled again but this time he noticed her smile were not very angelic.
'You are not a super man Dr. Walia…
'YOU? I KNOW YOU… OUT.. GET OUT.. He shouted.
'DR. Walia…….
Tony looked bewildered he had never seen his malik talking and shouting in his sleep.
He touched Jai's shoulder.
Jai snapped opened his eyes and looked at his loyal butler.
'A bad dream?'
'You bet?' jai tossed his quilt and got out hurriedly from the bed.
Dr. Walia was waiting for the elevator, Dr Mohan choudary spotted him.
Jai muttered under his breath.
'Jai my boy…' said the man cheerfully walking towards the elevator.
'Hello..'
'How was your seminar.?'
'good..'
Bnai walked hurriedly from the lobby heading for the elevator.
She smiled brightly at the attendant who waved and winked at her. She sported Jai and her heart beat rose. She didn't know how she was going to face him.
Dr. Choudry moved his attention from Jai and smiled at her.
'My angel..' He said.
Jai coughed and looked surprised.
'Good morning Dr. Choudry.' Bani greeted him.
'A very good morning angel…by the ways thank you.. Your suggestions worked..' he winked at her. Jai looked lost. They got into the elevator.
'well you do know Jai that I was having problem with little Robert. She helped me solve it.
Bani stole a peek at him. He looked least bothered.
In truth Jai Walia wondered what in God's name she did for that impossible child.
Dr. choudry got out at the fifth floor leaving the doctor and his assistant alone.
Bani hated to say sorry. But she had gone too far this time with her tongue. What ever she did was uncalled for. He was her employer and she had no right to speak her mind to him. She will have to gather her wits and apologize to him. She stared at his stiff back.
'I er am sorry for yesterday that was…. She stopped and looked expectantly at him. He looked least bothered about her apology. The lift opened at the 8th floor and he got out not bothering with her. She followed him hurriedly and said, 'I am sorry Dr. Walia that was a mistake.'
He paid no attention to her bantering strode to his office and shut the door.
Bani flushed with humiliation. She stood like a fool not believing what had happened. The humiliation changed its' course to rising fury.
She hated uncertainty. She hated everything about him and his work. She hated his arrogance she hated his mercy. She was her own boss. No body has any right to tell her off or show their displeasure.
She did feel safe and secure with this job that was a distant question now. She need to speak to him she needed to hear it from the horses mouth whether she was sacked or not. No more apologies, Bani dixit will not apologize. She was good at her work she knew that. With out another thought she pushed opened his door. And went in. he was at his desk. He glanced towards the door.
She looked directly at him and asked bluntly, " Dr Walia, I needed to know whether I am still working her or you have fired me..'
Jai walia looked at the fiery girl in front him and frowned.
'Sir I apologized to you twice fro my action and you seem least bothered… I have no idea whether you have excepted my apology or not..'
He looked about him pulled a sheet of paper and quoted something on it ignoring her.
This is ridiculous. 'Say something..'
He put the pen down and looked squarely at her.
'If you tell me now I don't have to waste my time here.. I can look for some other job.' She said stubbornly.
A smile tugged at his lips looking at her.
'Go to your seat and finish your work Ms. Dixit..' he said after a moment.
Bani grinned at the unexpected turn of events. She gave him a spectacular smile.
'Thank you..'
"Out..' he pointed towards the door.
Jai Walia smiled at the closed door. He had never come across some one like her. There was something about her.
Bani had shown a soft side still existed in him beneath his hard exterior. There were times he had felt he would throw her from her job.. After a moment her antics always brought smile to his lips. She reminded him of his nephew Jai who was named after him. The child was 4yrs old and got away with everything. He was a mischievous boy. He got up pushing away his thoughts. Grabbed his stethoscope and coat and walked to the door.
The door opened precisely and Jai grinned widely at his Aunt.
'What a pleasant surprise…' he said advancing towards the woman.
Mother Philomena smiled affectionately at her favorite nephew. Jai caught her hand in his and walked towards the settee. 'It's been a long time since we have met..' he said.
'Yes son… you could have visited me if you had taken time.' She said little dejected.
He looked embarrassed.
'Well what brought you here?'
'I need a favor son..' she said not taking his eyes of her. 'There's a man admitted in this hospital. His name is Andrew. He is an attendant in our chapel. A sole earner of his family consists of seven members. I want you to help him son. I don't think he can meet with the expenses of this hospital. He had met with an accident. It was a hit and run case which happened a kilometer away from this hospital..'
'Don't worry I'll look in him.' He assured her.
'I know I can always count on you…' she said smiling at him.
'Any time..' he promised.
'I presumed you were going somewhere before I came in..' she asked looking at his stethoscope.
'Hmm I was going for a round in the ward. Why don't you make yourself comfortable and then we will have our family talk…'
She looked hesitant for a second and then agreed to sit seeing his pleading eyes.
Jai left the room leaving her. Mother Philomena always kept her distance from her family. She still shuddered at the moment she told her father she wanted to be a nun .she had the calling from God. She had hell to pay. Later they gave into her and let her live the way she pleased. She kept little contact with them. She had been very close to his mother who was her younger sister. Mother Philomena was snapped out of her reverie as the door opened and a young woman stepped in with a file. The girls face lit up at the sight of her.
MOTHER….'she screamed. She ran towards her and threw herself up in her arms.
'Bani..' mother called with mixture of shock and surprise.
'Mother.. I don't believe this.. what a surprise…' she said hugging her tightly.
'Child behave your self..' said the mother untangling her hand from her waste.
Jai walia who was back from his round stood rooted at the door.
'Mother you told me I can hug you any time I want when we are alone…'
'Yes child but this is a hospital and anyone can come in any moment..' said the woman taking her hand in hers.
'Nobody will come in here mother other than that workaholic doctor.
Jai caught his breath in time.
'Workaholic dear..' prompted the mother.
'Yes mother, he is always busy, busy and more busy and edgy.. lets leave him aside tell me how are you? I miss you…'
'I am fine dear and I miss you too. I presume you are working under that workaholic doctor?'
"Yes, thanks to you mother.. Those detentions with you really paid..' she said fluttering her fingers.
Mother chuckled… she patted her hair and said..' Your hair has lost its glow. Aren't you taking good care..
'Yes mother..' Bani dismissed the subject.
'liar…' she gave a hit on Bani's shoulder. 'Take care of yourself.'
'Hmm..'
"Well mother what brought you here? Charity perhaps..?
Mother Philomena looked heaven wards blushing at her bluntness.
Jai rolled his eyes.
'Mother.. I wish I could make lots and lots of money and spend it on anything you ask for….' She said innocently hugging her once again.
'You will my dear you will….' She said holding her.
Jai knocked on the door and went in. Bani sprang aside from the mother.
Dr.Walia… the papers are on the desk…' she said and walked towards the door. She stood at the door and looked over her shoulder winked at the mother.
'Good day mother..'
Mother Philomena turned to her favorite nephew he looked lost words for a moment and then smiled to her.
Bani were in a good mood the rest of the day. She was happy to see mother Philomena. The last she met her was a year back. Mother had learned about her aunts death then.
Bani never set her foot in St. Bishop after she left with her aunt. She never wanted to be reminded of her pain and loneness there. She loved Mother Philomena and few people but hated to be there. There were sleepless nights she would sit on her bed and dream about family. She ached to be loved and love. She hated her mother for leaving her in an orphanage. Her aunt had often spoken of her father, how proud she was about him until one day he went and married a girl she never approved. Bani pushed away the train of thoughts and concentrated on her work.
The holiday season was approaching. The shops were being decorated. She enjoyed the festivities people were in. she didn't know what she was going to do about her holidays but she sure was not going to spend it with the Sahays'. She didn't want to be a nuisance to their holiday plans. Though they wouldn't mind her being with them, she didn't want to be a party to their family group. She would never forget the sympathetic look Mrs. Sayas sister threw at her last time. She hated sympathy. This time she would tell them something and stay back. She was good at lying.
Bani was at the bakery shop on Sunday she sported Roshni and Doctor. They were parked just out side the shop and seemed to be arguing about something. He looked irritated and Roshni was on the verge of crying. Bani watched them for a moment and got out of the shop with pastries in hand. Jai strode precisely at the moment and bumped into her. He pastries went flying from her hand landed on the ground in a mess.
"I am sorry miss.. ' he said hurriedly and looked up. 'Ms. Dixit…he acknowledged her and snatched the box from the ground.
"its' okay sir..' she said taking the box from his hand.
"it isn't. its' ruined everything is ruined for that matter..' he said throwing a glance at Roshni who stood stiffly on the pavement glowering at him.
'Relax..' she said noticing his irritation.
'Don't you dare pacify me miss..' he barked.
"okay..' she withdrew coolly and threw her head back at the counter and ordered.
'Freddy 8 pastries for me, hot from the oven.. this gentle man will pay.'
She turned her attention to her boss.
"Give her the pastries..' murmured Dr Walia. Bani got her pastries in seconds. She walked towards Jai and said, ' thank you sir. Nice to have met you here. I was not actually satisfied with the pastries he gave me earlier…' she pointed on the floor where pastries were plastered. "I told him so, but he wouldn't give me fresh ones from the oven. Now thanks to you I got what I wanted…' her eyes glinted at her small victory over the man.
In spite of his temper Jai smiled at the girl in front of him.
"I am glad I did something right fro someone.'
