Part 16:

Even with Jai's warm arms wrapped around her, bani still felt cold. She watches the metal doors, wishing for someone to come out and tell them how Pia was after she received the one liter blood from bani. The doctors had told bani to rest after they took blood from her, but bani didn't listen and continued to wait outside of the operation room. A childhood memory flashes through bani's mind, when Bani was very angry with Pia because she had spilled chocolate milk on her new shirt. She gave Pia the silent treatment, and made her feel guilty. Pia asked for forgiveness many times, but bani ignored her. And out of frustration, pia had said, "You know what, you're going to miss me when I die!". A tear rolls down, bani's cheek.

After another hour of waiting, the same doctor comes out, but instead of a hopeless look on, he wore a smile. He approaches bani.

Doc: Ms. Dixit, your sister is completely out of danger. She is still very weak and is resting at this moment, but if you would like to see her, you may. But only one visitor at a time.

Bani wipes away her tears and smiles, showing her happiness.

Bani: Thank you so much, Doctor.

The doctor takes bani into Pia's room, and leaves her alone. Bani slowly walks to pia, who is resting on the bed. She pulls up a chair and sits down next to her. She gazes at her little sister's pale face, with dark circles under her eyes and with cuts on her lips /cheeks. Bani takes pia's hand in hers and rubs it to give her warmth. She smiles when she feels Pia squeeze her hand. Her eyes slowly open and stare at a crying bani. Pia gives her a faint smile. "Hi, bani di…," she whispers weakly.

Pia: Di, I don't want to rest, I'm sick and tired of resting. I'm fine! (she argues)

Bani stares at pia, who is lying across the couch, watching television. Bani looks a complete mess, with her hair messily up in a clip, pieces of hair flying out, her duputta tied across her waist, no make up on, and carrying stacks of pia's magazines in her hands.

Bani: Pia, you make such a mess!
Pia: (giggles)
Bani: come on, pia. I'm telling you one last time, go to your room and rest. (serious)
Pia: (groans) I've been resting for a week now! I'm perfectly fine!
Bani: The Doctor said that you need complete bed rest for about two weeks! (arguing back) I want you to be perfectly fine, so go and rest. (she pleads)

Rano who is sitting comfortably in her chair, looks up from the magazine she is reading, and gives bani and pia and annoyed look. "God, you guys are impossible!," she says to them.

Pia: (ignoring rano) di, trust me. I'm absolutely fine. But since you're insisting so much, …I guess I will go and sleep. (she says tiredly)

Pia gets up slowly from her position and stands up. An aching pain from her body makes her sit back down. She groans. Bani quickly runs over to her.

Bani: here, how about you just stay here. I'll get some juice for you.
Pia: (smiles) thanks, di.

Bani leaves to go to the kitchen. Rano looks at pia, looking very jealous. She gets up and throws the magazine onto the glass table, frustrated. Pia ,stunned by rano's behavior, watches her leave to their room. Pia becomes puzzled. Bani comes back with a glass or orange juice in her hand and hands it to pia. She takes it from her, gratefully, and drinks it. Bani strokes pia's hair and kisses her on her forehead.

Bani: I'm so happy that you're alright.
Pia: (smiles)

Pia looks at the grandfather clock, and sees that it is 1:00.

Pia: di, shouldn't you be getting ready? Jai Walia is going to be here in 30 minutes.
Bani: (remembers) oh, yeah. I forgot. I think I'm just going to cancel, whose going to take care of you?
Pia: di, I'll be fine. You go and have fun.
Bani: (smiles) ok.

Bani goes to her room to quickly get ready. She sees Rano staring out of the window, her back faced towards her. Bani goes to her closet to pick out an outfit to wear.

Bani: Rano, I'm going to be out for awhile, will you take care of Pia for me?
Rano: (no response)
Bani: At 4:00, she'll want to have her noodles, and make sure that you take out the peas, or else she won't eat it. Oh, and make sure you give it to her cold, for some odd reason, she likes eating them cold. At 5:00, give pia her medicine, and oh don't forget to-
Rano: (yells) PIA, PIA, PIA! EVERYTHING'S ABOUT PIA!!!

Bani turns around from the closet, and faces a red faced rano, with her hands in big fists. Bani is taken aback.

Rano: (continues) Do this for pia, do that for pia, make sure pia does this, make sure pia does that! The whole world revolves around, pia, doesn't it?!!!
Bani: (angry) What are you trying to say, Rano?! What do you have against, pia?!
Rano: (frustrated) Forget it!!!

Rano stomps out of the room and bani follows her into the living room. Pia sees an upset looking rano enter the living room, looking like she's ready to punch someone in the face. An angry, but confused bani behind her.

Bani: no, rano! Tell me what you mean!
Pia: (innocently asks) what's wrong?
Rano: (glares at pia) just shut up, pia! Do you have to involve yourself into everything?
Pia: (stunned) ..rano?…
Bani: (angry) Don't talk to pia like that! She's older than you!
Pia: What's wrong, rano?
Rano: (ignores her) didi, it's always about pia for you! You never pay attention to me or anyone else!
Bani: That's not true, rano. (calmly)
Rano: Why do you love her more than me, when she's not even your real sister, and I am?!!! (she shouts)

Pia stares at Rano with shock. She feels like she had been slapped on the face, stabbed in the back. Her eyes begin to water as her face goes pale. She feels so hurt. "Rano…?".
