PART 6

He can see Adi, DCP, Dadi all calling his name, but he hears nothing – only an echo in his head, "Aaj subah hame Juhu beach pe ek laash milli hain."

Jai staggers and Roshni runs up to him, simpering;

Rosh: Jai, kya hogaya tumhe, tum theek to ho…..

Jai looks up at her, unable to get the words out, wanting to scream but…….

Ranveer: Mamaji, kya hua, yeh kangnan…. Mamaji kuch to bataaiye…..

Jai: Bani……. (he whispers) Bani….. Yeh kangan maine Bani ko………..

Everyone stares at him in shock. Dadi slowly comes towards him, holding his coat lapels, searching his eyes for any hint that he did not mean what they all knew he had just said.

Dadi: Nahi puttar….. nahi……

Jigs goes to comfort her but she is pushed away.

Dadi: Nahi Jai tumhe ghalat fehmi hui hai….. nahi yeh nahi ho….. kya…. Kya jawab doongi mein Billo ko?? Nahin Jai…. Theek se dekho yeh kangan Bani ke nahin ho sakte!!!!!!

Tears spill down his face and he flashbacks on every memory of Bani, his insults, his threats, her tolerance, her tears, that night……

DCP: Mr Walia….. Mr Walia…… main samajh sakta hu ap par kya beet rahi hai lekin aap ko mere saath chalna hoga, body ki identification karni hai……

Ranveer: Aap chaliye inspector sahaab, hum peeche aate hai…..

DCP leaves.

Adi goes to Jai, kneeling on the floor clutching the kangan.

A: Jai….. Jai utho hame…

J: NAHI!!! ADITYA NO WAY!! Yeh meri Bani nahin ho sakti, mein kahi nahin jaa raha hoon. Just leave me alone, go!!

Roshni, annoyed at his use of the term "meri Bani": Calm down Jai, I know its sad, but there's no need to lose your self control. Waise bhi she had left you hadn't she?!! Aur yeh shaadi, shaadi thi hi kaha??!! Tum unki beheno ko bataado, they'll deal with it, tum kyun stress lete ho??!!

Her words are cut short as Jai (finally) slaps her hard.

(*ok I know its not a good thing hitting a woman and all, but come on, she deserves it!!!!!)

J: TUMHAARI HIMMAT KAISE HUI?!! GET OUT ROSHNI!! ISSE PEHLE KE MEIN KUCH AISA KARDOON KE……. JUST GET THE HELL OUT OF MY HOUSE!!!!!!

Roshni, stunned, looks to Jigs for support, but finds none, and storms off in a rage.

Jai stands up, holding the kangan tightly in his hand.

J: Ranveer, Adi, chalo mere saath.

Ranveer: Mamaji, maybe it is better if me and papa….

J: Jigyaasa tum yaha Dadi ka khayal rakho. Koi aaye na aaye, mein police station jaa raha hu. Mujhe police ki tassali ke liye waha jaa ke dekhna hoga ke Bani ka naam de ke vo kis ki la….. kisse utha laye hai.

Jai storms out of the house followed by Adi and Ranveer while Jigs goes to help Dadi into a chair and calls Tony to get her some water.

He drives to the police station in complete silence. Adi and Ranveer exchange glances and look at him through the corner of their eyes, almost expecting him to say….. something…… anything……

Jai is single mindedly focussed on the road. Not a single tear falls from his eyes and he refuses to say a word. All he thinks is that the sooner they get this over and done with, the sooner he can get back home, to his room….. to their room……

Bani flashes before his eyes, laughing at his besura singing….. dancing with him…… jealously watching him dance with roshni….. falling asleep on his arm….. leading him towards their bed……

He shook his head and braked hard, coming to a stop outside the police station. He walked inside and Adi and Ranveer nervously scurry in after him.

DCP Yadav hurries forward to greet him.

J: Please inspector sahab, I do not intend to stay here long. Aap ko jo kaam hai jaldi kar lijiye. The sooner I show you it is not my Bani you have found, the sooner I can get out of here.

DCP: Please Mr Walia, mein samajh sakta hu aap pe kya beet rahi hai, but try to keep an open-

J: Please Inspector sahaab, I do not have all day.

The four men walk through the brightly lit corridors and with every step Jai's faade of confidence starts to crack a little more. "Bani, tum mujhe aise chhod ke nahin jaa sakti. There is so much I have to tell you, so much I have to explain to you, please Bhagwaan, please let my Bani be safe…."

They come to the room and the DCP tries to be sensitive and prepare them for what they are about to see. Jai silences him with once glance and puts his hand out to open the door. He stops and prays with every fibre of his being that he does not recognise the body on the other side of the door…..

They walk into a dark room and take a while to adjust to the lighting. In front of them is a table on which a body lies draped in a white sheet.

Jai moves forward inch by inch and lifts a shaking hand to touch the single sheet of cotton between his life and death, his death that would be certain if he recognised the body beneath that sheet.

He pulls it back and flinches as he sees silky black hair and creamy skin….. he jolts backward, turns, and leans against the wall for support, shaking and saying her name over and over again "Bani…bani…..meri bani…."
