Finally, Iqbal gets engaged
By: Sandipan Dalal
November 18, 2006
A simple affair: Sneha and Iqbal Khan
Iqbal Khan is set to exchange rings in a private ceremony with his long-time sweetheart Sneha this afternoon. The couple has been dating for nearly three years and has been contemplating tying the knot for some time now.
Presently, their parents are looking at auspicious days in January 2007 for the nikah followed by a private reception. Says Iqbal, "Finally, my wait is over. My parents, who live in Kashmir, met Sneha earlier this year and have grown very fond of her. Now, they're here to bless us as we get formally engaged today."
Small affair
Sneha echoes similar sentiments. "I'm so thrilled. We have been together for some time now, so we had better be getting married!"
While Iqbal is away shooting, Sneha shoulders the responsibility of cleaning, grocery shopping and cooking. Ask her about the low-key engagement and she says, "We wanted to share this special day only with our parents and family. It's a simple ring exchange ceremony followed by lunch."
Adds Khan, "And there's no surprise as both of us went together to purchase our rings."
Significant day
The couple has coordinated their outfits too. Says Sneha, "After much brainstorming, we opted for pink. I've already had my outfit stitched, while Iqbal will wear a pink shirt with beige trousers. For the nikah, we will co-ordinated outfits in blue and gold."
The couple is now anxiously waiting for their parents to decide the wedding date. Sneha wants to get married on January 15, as they complete three years of courtship on that day. "I'm hoping they agree on January 15. It's a very significant day for us as we started seeing each other on that day. It's something we can tell our kids about!"

'I hate to be tagged as an item-girl'

Nigaar Khan speaks on doing an item-number and her new show on television

Oomph-gal Nigaar Khan who currently plays the 'bitchy' avenging angel Barnali in 'Kasamh Se' (Zee) has bagged her next item-number assignment in Ektaa Kapoor's serial 'Karam Apna Apna ' (Star Plus) where she will be wriggling and swaying to 'Aaj Ki Raat Hona Hai Kya' a song from 'Don'.

Recently, she was seen gyrating to the chartbuster cabaret song 'Yeh Mera Dil', also from 'Don', as part of a wedding celebration sequence in 'Kahiin Toh Hoga' (Star Plus).

Wasn't she apprehensive of getting typecast as an 'item-girl' of the 'small-screen'? She squirms and retorts, "For heaven's sake, I hate to be tagged as an 'item-girl' as I am an actress first! Dancing and music is more of a passion which always gives me a 'high'.

Even while I am applying make-up or travelling, I need to constantly listen to rocking music. Although, I am a self-taught dancer, most people presume that I am professionally trained."

Nigaar has bagged her first-ever telly anchoring assignment and will have competition at home from her sister VJ Gauhar Khan.

"It's called 'Aaj Ki Filmy Khabar' (Sahara-Filmy) and I am looking forward to exploring yet another new dimension of my talent as a TV hostess," enthuses Khan whose 'secret regret' is that she could not participate in 'Nach Baliye-2'.

"Had I been going steady with some guy who was also fond of dancing, I guess, I would have qualified for 'Nach..'. Maybe, I should look out for 'Jhalak Dikhhlaa Jaa 2'," she quips in her husky voice.

Salil is back on small-screen
After Hours Correspondent
Sunday, November 19, 2006 18:27 IST

The actor resumes acting in 'Karam Apna Apna'

Salil Ankola, who was booted out of 'Bigg Boss' (Sony) last week due to an injunction passed by the Mumbai High Court, returned to the 'Karam Apna Apna' (Star Plus) sets yesterday.

The cricketer turned actor had allegedly flouted an agreement signed with Balaji Telefilms, which required him to commit all his dates to the production house for 'Karam Apna Apna' (Star Plus) that was launched on August 29 this year. The actor was expected to abide by the contract for the next 12 months. He shot for 20 days each in August and September on the sets of 'Karam..' but did not show up in October. It was later learnt that Salil had signed up for 'Bigg Boss'.

When Balaji moved court, Justice DK Deshmukh ordered that until the arbitration in the agreement is pending, the actor cannot act, endorse, advertise or do voice overs for programmes produced by production houses that compete with Balaji. Sony had no option but to ask him to leave.

A week later, a repentant Ankola sent a text message to Ektaa Kapoor, saying he was sorry that he had overstepped his limits. A forgiving Ekta, it appears, has let bygones be bygones, and has decided to re-induct him into 'Karam..'

Confirming the development, Salil says, "Keeping my best interests in mind, I took the initiative and Ektaa responded with warmth and positivity. I spoke to the creative head Doris and I am happy to be back working for Balaji again. Life is too short and ego destroys. It was important for me to settle this issue amicably."

If the Salil episode is the latest in the supposedly ongoing feud between Balaji and Sony's creative director Sandiip Sikcand, then it appears to be advantage Ektaa for now!

"I have a great respect for Ekta Kapoor"---Salil Ankola

What if he realized his mistake after the damage was done? What if he was shown the door before he could pack his bags gracefully? Like his stint with cricket, his innings with Sony's Big Boss ended in a disaster. So nothing new for this man with a checkered past.
For sure we are talking about Salil Ankola. The man in mention is making news for all the wrong reasons. His ouster from Sony's Bigg Boss was something which the actor had little anticipated. Adds Salil, "I realized quite late that I have signed a contract with Balaji and now I am back shooting for Karam Apna Apna."
Looks like our star of Kora Kagaz fame would have a better memory in future after being served court orders. So how was his experience being in the Big Boss show, and the stylish actor says, "I have fond memories of my stay in the Big Bosse's house. It was like living with a family we used to have fun together. I would surely remember this experience for the rest of my life".
And what does he feel about the fact that Ekta had to send him a legal notice to resume work. "Well, it's all about the profession. I don't harbour any hard feelings for this incident and I have a great respect for Ekta Kapoor. I was on a working contract with Balaji and if they sent me a notice as a reminder, it's all in the spirit of the profession."
So what is Salil busy post the Bigg Boss controversy? "I am back to work and have resumed shooting for Karam Apna Apna where I play Mahen the suave businessman. "

Talk about his co-star Iqbal Khan (Salils son in Karam....) who had recently announced his intentions of quitting the serial in December, the actor retorts, "Iqbal is currently shooting with me for Karam and I have nothing else to say regarding this matter."
Ya sure....Once bitten is twice shy. And that's not a bad policy to adopt, we agree!

Pallavi suffers a shock

She accidentally touched a live wire
Pallavi Subhash, who plays the lead Gauri in primetime show 'Karam Apna Apna' (Star Plus) met with an accident and shooting was held up last Friday.
Pallavi suffered an electric shock when she accidentally touched a live wire during the shoot. She fainted and there was temporary pandemonium on the sets when the unit realised what had happened. A doctor was immediately summoned to administer first aid.
Pallavi recovered and the shoot resumed after being held up for a couple of hours. When contacted, Pallavi grudgingly admitted that such an incident had taken place but was reluctant to divulge details. "I did suffer a shock, but I am fine now," was all she would say.

Tiff with Ektaa led to Iqbal's exit?
The two have apparently had a showdown leading to the actor quitting Balaji
After Hours Correspondent

Dignified that he is, Iqbal Khan may insist that it is the punishing work hours and 'saturation' that did him in, but the real reason why the actor quit the Balaji camp is probably something else.
The trouble started a few days before Id this year. Sources say that Iqbal wanted a holiday during Id, but Balaji Telefilms creative head Ektaa Kapoor refused it, citing that the 'Karam Apna Apna' shooting could not be stalled. A miffed Iqbal retaliated by switching off his mobile phone and not reporting for shooting for two days during Id.
This ticked off the production house in a big way, because when Iqbal returned after two days, he was summoned to Ektaa's office and given a dressing down.
Sources say that Ektaa blamed Iqbal for the all the delays and problems that 'Karam..'' is currently facing (a weak plotline and dipping TRPs).
Iqbal did take it for a while, say sources, but after some time he told Ektaa that he was not interested in continuing any further. He is currently serving his notice period and his last date for shooting for 'Karam..' is December 25.
Sources say that Star Plus, which airs 'Karam..'. did try to intervene and resolve matters, but neither Ektaa nor Iqbal would budge. Iqbal, who did a flop feature film before Ektaa spotted him and cast him as the lead of 'Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai' (Sony), has come a long way in the industry. While it was Balaji that gave him the lucky break, it seems the good times were not fated to last.
When contacted, however, Iqbal refutes the incident. "Maybe some people in the production team had a problem, but definitely not Ektaa. She encouraged me to take time off on Id. Why would she act this way? I am just tired, and want time off." But when quizzed whether he would return from his long deserved sabbatical to another Balaji show, he quips, "No, I haven't decided whether I will work again with a Balaji production."

'Dance shows? No way!'

Achint Kaur tells BT why boyfriend Mohan Kapoor and she aren't swaying in a reality dance show.

ROSHNI OLIVERA

After a long time you are seen in a positive role on Star Plus' Karam Apnaa Apnaa...
I've played all kinds of characters over the past years. In today's life playing positive characters is very boring. When it comes to negative, it's slightly better because these roles are
Do you want to make your own shows?
I will never become a producer. That's not me... please!
With reality dance shows in focus,
were extreme and there's more to emote. In positive roles, you are either upset or you are crying!
So what kind of roles are you looking at?
I would like anything that is interesting.
Mohan (boyfriend actor Mohan Kapoor) and you approached for any?
We were approached for Star One's Nach Baliye. But, Mohan was handling Like my Kitty Party role. That was positive but it wasn't run-of the mill. The problem is that in today's TV scenario there is no charecterisation at all. Ideally, the content should be contemporary. Family drama is fine, but it should be closer to life.
You are one of the few TV actors who's very vocal about the programming on TV...
I know I've been very vocal. Now even I am fed up of that (she laughs)! Jo hai so hai... the other dance show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa on Sony. So we didn't consider it. Of course, that apart, both of us are equally pathetic when it comes to dance!
What about wedding bells?
Nothing right now. For us, we are as good as married. Even our families feel that way. Basically, they forget we are not married.

Iqbal Khan meets Ekta Kapoor for peace talks

The actor and the soap queen had a secret meeting recently

SUBHASH K JHA

Their hush-hush meeting on Wednesday morning is the most talked-about event in television circles. TV sensation Iqbal Khan had a secret meeting with Ekta Kapoor. Have the two decided to bury their differences and work together again?
Smiles Khan, "All I can say is, Ekta and I met with the same warmth, affection and feeling of solidarity as we did in the past. There's absolutely no ill-will between us. I don't know why some sections of the press are trying to sour things between us by writing about showdowns. We never had a showdown. And my decision to leave her production house on December 25 has nothing to do with any differences between us. I am taking a break because I've been working non-stop for two years. The fact is, I was a flop actor on screen when Ekta's company gave me Kaisa Yeh Pyarr Hai on Sony. Whatever I am today, I owe to Ekta. And I'm not going to be one of those actors who bad-mouth her after leaving her company."
Though Iqbal rules out the chance of an early return to her company, there's no doubt that the doors are not shut for the actor. For now, Iqbal prepares for a nikaah ceremony with fianc Sneha. "Only our immediate families, meaning her parents and mine, will be present for the nikaah. After that we'll proceed to register our marriage. If I had my way, I'd just go straight to the registrar's office and be done with it."
Iqbal intends to have a large wedding reception for family and friends. Will Ekta Kapoor be present? "By all means. She has to come. Ekta has always supported me. And I won't let that change," says the actor emotionally.

KBC strikes again...

Now Karam Apna Apna will go off air to make way for SRK's show.

Ranjib Mazumder

Clueless: Pallavi Subhash

After Ravi Chopra's Viraasat, the next show that is going off air to make way for Kaun Banega Crorepati? is Balaji's Karam Apna Apna.

Says Shailija Kejriwal, senior creative director of Star, "Since KBC is going to be the main attraction in the prime time slot, two shows have to wind up and make way for KBC. Karam Apna Apna along with Viraasat will probably go off air, at least for the first thirteen weeks after KBC is launched."

But how can a channel sacrifice a popular show like Karam… at the altar of KBC? Says, Dorris Dey, creative director of the show, "I do not want to comment on KBC's impact on our other shows. We are yet to be informed regarding the fate of the serial."

How have the TRPs of Karam… been, so far? "The TRPs of the show has been high, better than some other hit serials. We are trying for an alternative slot, but we are yet to figure out all the possibilities," says Shailija.

Pallavi Subhash, aka Gouri in Karam…, seems clueless about the developments. "We have not been informed by the production house about the show going off air. As far as the success of the show is concerned, it is doing very well," she says.

Making way for 'KBC'

Karam Apna Apna' to continue but 'Viraasat' gets axed

'Karam Apna Apna', the Balaji show on Star Plus will soon be shifted to another time slot. According to sources, it will get the 8 pm slot. Balaji's fresh offering 'Karam...' could not connect with the audiences. Hence, the shift away from a prime time slot, say sources.

With Ravi Chopra's 'Viraasat' (Star Plus) being made to bow out, Star Plus seems to be making way for the big ticket show of the season, 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' with Shah Rukh Khan in the host's seat.

On these developments, Shailja Kejriwal, senior creative director of Star, says, "Yes, we are continuing with 'Karam Apna Apna' but have yet to decide it's time slot. Where 'Viraasat' is concerned, we see tremendous potential in it and so are giving it a 13 weeks season break. Its second season will return thereafter."

The channel has grand plans for the finale of 'Nach Baliye2' (Star One). "Like the first season, we are having a live finale from the sets. It's only the other contestants performances that will be canned earlier but the finale performances by the finalists Tina-Hussain and Yash-Gauri will be live on December 18," says Shailja.
