When Rajev Paul flew a plane!

DEEPALI DHINGRA

Post his negative portrayals in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and Kavyanjali on Star Plus, Rajev Paul became a household face. And when he recently visited Maldives, he was delighted to see people recognise him. "I was in Maldives for three days where I was a state guest. I had quite a few awesome experiences there and even met the tourism minister."
The TV actor recalls how he got into the cockpit of a plane and managed to fly it for a few minutes, and in the process scared all the crew members! "They got so scared when they got to know that I'm flying the plane!" he laughs. According to Rajev, the only mode of transport in Maldives is the speed boat and almost everyday, he was cruising around in a new one. "I even went for underwater diving and snorkelling. Now that was quite an experience!" he says. But the one thing that Rajev missed was wife Delnaazz's company. "It is a place meant for couples, so I missed Delu over there," he says with a smile.
On the professional front, Rajev is busy with Karam Apna Apna on Star Plus, where he's playing a positive character. "I'm an extremely positive person anyways, so this role is perfect for me," he says. But wasn't he apprehensive of not being accepted in a positive role after being accepted so whole-heartedly as a negative character? "I'm open to all kinds of roles, as long as they're interesting. Then if they've got shades of white, black, grey, red or blue, it doesn't matter!"

Hiten's karam

Hiten and Gauri were furious with the judges of Nach Baliye 2 for the low scores and scathing comments, but now they've realised that the criticism was not a personal attack.

The duo has been putting in a lot more hours rehearsing for the show, to ensure their place in the finals. But now it looks like Hiten may be pressed for time. He has been pencilled in to play a role in Karam Apna Apna, where he makes an entry today. So what happens now? Will the rehearsals take a backseat or Ekta Kapoor? Let's wait and watch.

Interview of the week: By A. L. Chougule

An Ekta's protg, he is apparently one of the soap queen's favourite actors. In return Hiten Tejwani is equally loyal to his mentor. What else would explain Hiten's career taking off with Balaji's Kutumb and growing strong with the production house's subsequent shows like Kya Haasda Kya Haqeeqat, Kahiin To Hoga, Koi Di Mein Hai and Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai besides Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi where he plays a key character. It seems there is a place for Hiten in practically every Balaji show. If he is not part of a show in the beginning then he is assured of a role in it subsequently. Hiten did not figure anywhere in the star-studded Karam Apna Apna that was launched on Star Plus two months ago. But now he has been added to the cast of the show in an important role.

"I am playing Anupam Bhattacharya. He is a writer himself and owns a big publishing house," says Hiten who becomes the beleaguered main protagonist's saviour, guide and benefactor. On the day of her marriage Gauri runs away on learning that Shashank has not turned up for their marriage. She meets Anupam in a park. "Anupam had met her before and that meeting is shown in the flashback where he had advised her on life's philosophy and how to live positively and face all problems," explains Hiten who is the third important person in Gauri's life. "There is an interesting track in the offing and what happens next is quite interesting to watch."

Hiten's career is going from strength to strength and he admits that it's all thanks to Ekta. "Hats off to her. She has given me a variety of roles to play. Balaji is like a second home to me," says the actor who plays Karan in Kyunki. While post-generation leap quite a few characters were put on the backburner, some were sidelined and others were shown the door, Karan continues to stand tall in the midst of countless characters. Where is the character going now?

"Well he will be in a dilemma because Nandini (his first wife, played by his real-life wife Gauri Pradhan) is coming back after 20 years of remaining without any trace. Also Bhoomi is getting married to Abhir who is not a nice guy. So there is lot in store for Karan," he smiles. But the smile on his face disappears as soon as you ask him about Nach Baliye. Probably he is more at ease delivering dialogues and expressing his feelings in serials than hitting the dance floor. His performance in three episodes over as many weeks has been far from rocking.

"We have done an average job," he admits. "But I am improving and so is Gauri. I am not a good dancer and initially it was quite tough. But now I have started enjoying it. It's a reality show and it gives a different feeling," says Hiten, hoping to improve further and raise his performance to higher bars in coming weeks. "If we do well I see myself going to the eight or ninth round," he says quite positively.

May be he is too ambitious. But then life is nothing without ambitions and without efforts. He and Gauri were not on talking terms for six months despite working together in Kutumb. The ice was broken and they opened up. They started going out and after one and half years of courtship marriage happened. It may be difficult to dance but it's not easy to win a lady's heart. Having won Gauri's heart it may not be all that difficult for Hiten and Gauri to dance better in tandem. "In reality shows anything can happen," he says.

Double trouble for Iqbal Khan
By: Tushar Joshi
October 10, 2006

Iqbal Khan and a shot of the web page with the actor's profile on Orkut

Iqbal Khan isn't particularly tech savvy and hardly ever uses the Internet. However, the actor was in for a rude shock recently, when his fiance Sneha stumbled

upon a web page on Iqbal. A fan of Khan has taken on the actor's identity and created a profile on the popular website Orkut, which is the biggest online meeting platform for people from around the world.

Woh main nahin

Giving details about this discovery, Iqbal says, "I was totally unaware of it. One day, Sneha was casually checking some websites when she stumbled upon a profile with my name and picture. The person who created it was getting thousands of queries and replies from people all over the world. Sneha mentioned that to me and I was more amused than angry."

On visiting the web page in question, one can see that the fan who has created it has not only used Iqbal's name, but also added in details about the actor, including his actual birth date, which is February 10.

The fan pretending to be Iqbal has also given a brief description under the About Me section that reads, "I can't reply to all of you. I don't have enough time to reply to all of you individually. I hope you people will understand."

Not gratefully yours

Iqbal also informs that his mobile number isn't private any more. Most of his fans already have it. "There is a website where some one posted my mobile number. After that, everyone around the world keeps calling me."

After the Orkut episode, the actor would get messages and calls from fans thanking him for chatting with them the previous night.

"I would be wondering when did I ever speak to this person? Whenever some one tells me that I have mailed them or chatted with them on the Internet, I make it a point to clarify the misunderstanding."

Does he feel threatened or worried about a fan who has taken on his identity? "Not really. I think whoever the person is doesn't intend any harm to me. I find it quite funny that someone actually has the time to do all this."

Recently, Iqbal purchased a brand new laptop and Sneha has been helping him get the hang of his new machine.
Says Khan, "I hardly get time to visit the Internet or even use my computer. Sneha does the required email checking and browsing. She is also helping me get accustomed with the new laptop."

Eye do: Shilpa Saklani

Shilpa tones it down

A co-star's catty comment made Shilpa Saklani redo her make-up. (High time!)

Mumbai Mirror Bureau

Shilpa Saklani aka Ganga in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, was upset recently when a co-actress commented on her loud make-up. Her make-up became a topic of discussion on the sets of a channel's special Diwali Dhamaka episode.

Says a source on the sets, "Shilpa had put on some weird eye-colours that weren't going well with her dress. She was supposed to dance with Eijaz Khan. There were many others present for the dress rehearsal, when someone just passed a remark on her looks. Of late, Shilpa has been seen putting a lot of make-up even for her new get-up as Ganga. Although everyone noticed, nobody ever had actually pointed it out to her. But Shilpa took it in her stride and quickly went to the greenroom to tone down her make-up. And I must admit she appeared more graceful than before."

Scissor me not?

After the highly debated film censorship, it's now TV content which is the hot target of snipping fingers!

Post the 7/11 blasts there were debates about news channels flashing gory photographs of the victims. Talking about the daily sagas - be it the rape sequence in Kyunki Saas Bhi Bahu Thi, or the multiple-extra marital affairs in almost all shows, the cozy scenes in Viraasat and Kasamh Se and the violence depicted in, believe it or not, cartoon channels…..all this and much more has come under scrutiny!

A recent censorship order was passed by the Bombay High Court blanking out 'A' and 'U/A' content aired on TV. Do we really need a regulatory body which will decide what we watch at home, sitting as couch fries?

Riya V. Anandwala corners some actors from the television fraternity who give their piece of mind on this controversial issue!

Ram Kapoor- "Its mere hypocrisy!"

I am totally disgusted with the idea of censoring television content. It's an extremely hypocritical situation when these parents are opposing the English channels. If they intend to condemn their children from watching adult stuff, they first need to control internet through which children are exposed to anything and everything. According to my knowledge there is nothing vulgar or obscene on television that it should have a censor board! In worse to worst situations we need to have a system by which we can lock up channels, as they have abroad.

Supriya Pathak-"They also need to keep a check on"

Talking about censorship I believe apart from blanking out English films, they should also keep a check on the daily content which flows in, which includes the daily serials, music videos everything. They should see what is actually affecting people. Cutting one scene won't make a difference; it's only the themes which they manifest.

Achint Kaur-"A family is responsible!"

Everything is made for a certain age group. It's an individual decision to let their children watch what they want to. Banning all channels is certainly not a solution. In my opinion nothing should be banned, as nothing comes across as being vulgar! It's the family who should decide and take sensible actions.

Hiten Tejwani-"They should place adult content on late time slots"

Instead of banning content which is not for all age groups, they should place it on late time slots, so that the viewers who want to watch it don't have any issues with the censorship body. But censoring content from the cartoon shows is unbelievable! The daily soaps revolve around pure drama. If it's about true stories being showcased on soaps or shows, then they do need a regulatory body!

Sajid Khan-"The person thinking of banning cartoons is a cartoon himself!"

It's nothing but fair! Apart from these channels the music videos should be banned. They don't do nothing good instead are provocative. Though I don't have children, I can empathize with the parents. Even the news channels need a regulatory body to keep a watch on their content, if they continue to produce sting operations! And whoever is thinking of banning cartoons is a carton himself!

You have seen him in ads, music videos and movies but it was Kaisa yeh Pyar Hai that got all the girls week on their knees. For him life and death are perhaps the only sole truth that exists. Here Mohammad Iqbal "Angad" Khan shares his views on life.

On Myself

I am a simple, honest and normal human being who takes life as it comes and is very God fearing.

On Religion

All religions basically teach you how to reach god. Rest is all humans' creation. The basic premise is to be in tune with God.

On God

God is everything. Ultimately it's He who decides what you get - when and how. For me I prefer being in touch with God at least 2-3 times a day. If I don't, then something is amiss for me.

On Life and Death

Zindagi Pukartee hai aayo hum bhi milke pukareein... ....
Life and Death.... Bas ek yehi hakikat hai baki Sab Bakwas!
Life and Death are the two truths in life that we tend to forget and get into wordly pleasure. It's a madding world out here where we are trying to outdo each other and in this race to move ahead we tend to forget about the small but beautiful things that "life" has to offer to us. Through life we gain experience and learning, through learning you grow and through experience you gain maturity. Life is important and we have to take care of the life we are living. Its like learning to play the correct string and chord. Death is inevitable - something which we all prefer to deny but have to accept.

On Success and Failure

Failure is important in life. Failure is essential to value success. Until you don't experience failure, you don't value success. However Success is a very relative term and often people confuse success with being famous. Success can't be measured by power or name but ultimately it boils to how you lived your life and how true you have been to yourself. Where films are concerned, I have been failure in the sense that none of the films did well. One was average and the other was a box office disaster. I had no money. Then KYPH Happened. I still don't consider myself to be a famous though it gives me a high seeing people recognizing me and wanting my autographs or click pictures with me. When on my death bed, if I have this contentment that I have been a good human being and lived a life worthwhile, then I would feel that I have been successful.

On Love and Friendship

Love keeps you going and for me it's my emotional support. Love is a great motivation to live. Love and friendship are the two most important things. Friends like you and appreciate you for who you are and not what you are. I have very few friends but that doesn't mean I am not friendly. I share a very close bond with my friends. They have been with me through thick and thin. My friends are special to me. I don't have to hesitate before calling them up, I just have to dial their numbers and speak to them. Though we don't meet as often as we would like, we are always there for each other. I share a special bond with my friends and my friends are those whom I can call at midnight in Delhi from Mumbai saying I want 5 lakhs by 5 am and I will have those 5 lakhs at my doorsteps at 4:30 am.

On Marriage

Marriage is important in life. It's a great feeling to finally settle down with the one you love. There is no other happiness than coming back home to the arms of the one you want to spend the rest of your life with.

On Pain & Jealousy

Jealousy is a very trivial thing, which shouldn't exist. It's a small mole that can be made into a mountain and can ruin relationship. It's an emotion, which occurs in most women. Mostly men suffer from insecurities. Pain forms the larger picture of life. It's a part and parcel of human emotion, an angle which one experiences and realizes the importance of many things in life. When you experience pain, you come closer to being a good human being.

On Anger

Gussa Dimak ho Kha Jaa Jata hai. Its like a keeda which can spell doom for you. Anger is something which needs to be controlled and can be controlled if your negative energies are channelised in the right direction.

On Meditation

I have heard a lot about meditation but don't know how to do it, practice it. For me Meditation is about channelising your energy and effort in the right direction.

On Spirituality

Spirituality is something, which keeps you closer to God. It teaches you to be human and lead a good life. All of us are spiritual in some way or the other - the extent to which a person is spiritual may differ. Some may be a little spiritual and some of us may want to hide that aspect from the rest of the world.

Pallavi was Rajshree Thakur's backup option

Pallavi Subhash now known as Gauri from Karam Apna Apna, could have otherwise been known as Saloni because she was the back up option for the lead in Saat Phere. The producers were interested in casting her as Saloni if things didn't work out with their original choice who was Rajshree Thakur.

"Yes, Pallavi was considered for the role due to her dusky complexion and good screen presence. But then things worked out with Rajshree as she suited the role better. She is duskier and can evoke more sympathy when it comes to this role," says a source from the production house Sphere Origin, which produces Saat Phere.

The irony of the situation now is that the 9.30 pm prime time slot on Zee TV and Star Plus is ruled by both the dusky beauties with their biggie soaps Saat Phere — Saloni ka Safar and Karam Apna Apna respectively. Wonder if the producers ever imagined that their second choice would soon give them stiff competion?

Diwali for stars!

It's that time of the year when there is magic in the air, bright lights in the sky and happiness all around you, find out what your favourite stars are up to this Diwali.

Tanaaz Lal
We started with the energitic Tanaaz Lal, she is teh new enthu-pataka on television! "This Diwali, we have been flooded with party invites. Therefore we have no plans of going anywhere outside the city. So plan number one is to shop madly for gifts. And plan number two, is to attend some of those parties that we've been invited to."

Ronit Roy
The charmer of television is going the spiritual and relaxed way...

"On Diwali day, we will have pooja at home and of course light diyas. But on the 19th I am having small party for my friends and family. This is my daughter Aadore's second Diwali. But I'm leaving all the hard work to my wife who will be doing all the shopping."

Rohit Roy
He has his hand full co hosting the ICC Champions Trophy and being the main lead of popular show - Viraasat. Let's find out, what he has for a plan!

"I am shooting for Viraasat and Extra Inning on the Diwali day. I will finish with it in the evening and go home and burst crackers. Some friends will be coming for dinner."

Hiten Tejwani
He is going the safe and healthy Diwali this year, no late night parties, no crackers, no hungama... One's guess would be that he is having lots of it being part of STAR One's celeb dance show - Nach Baliye 2.

"I have no plans as such. I will do puja at my house with my family. I have decided to not attend any Diwali parties this time around and spend time at home. We will definitely light diyas around our home. But no fire crackers as they cause a lot of air and noise pollution."

Mohnish Behl
"I will be spending Diwali with my family. We will all get together for a nice quiet dinner. My daughter loves fire crackers so I'm sure I'll join her in bursting some. I haven't had time to shop for myself this Diwali but my wife has been making up for that!"
