Freeze Frame

Intimidated by Iqbal Khan, newcomer Pallavi Subhash fumbles again and again on the sets of Karam Apnaa Apnaa

Reena Thapar Kapoor

Newcomer Pallavi Subhash was intimidated by the mere presence of Iqbal Khan, while shooting the first few episodes of Star Plus's new soap Karam Apnaa Apnaa in Kolkata. The debutante who has garnered great feedback for her simple yet elegant look in the serial had a tough time facing the camera.

The unit members of the show say: "She is a good actor and is very quick with her dialogues." But on the day when Pallavi met her on-screen love interest Shiv, played by Iqbal Khan, she started fumbling with her lines. Everyone on the sets thought Pallavi was unwell but she confessed losing her focus completely. "Actually, she was very nervous to act before Iqbal. It was the third episode and Iqbal was present on the sets. They didn't have any scene together before this. It was just his presence that made her a little conscious," says a unit member.

Apparently, Pallavi's dilemma did not end there. It took eight retakes before her shot was okayed. "But the director understood her plight and was very patient." We spoke to Iqbal Khan who is all praise for Pallavi. "She is a good looking girl. And from what I saw of her in front of the camera, she is a decent actor as well," says Khan.

The hunk also said that he tried to make her feel comfortable during the shooting. "Everyone is a newcomer at some point of time. I had no scenes with her during the Kolkata outdoor. Yes, I was around when she was giving her shot. I don't know if she was intimidated by me," he says. After playing a good Samaritan and a rock star in Kavyanjali and Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai respectively, this time Iqbal is playing an affluent brat in Karam Apnaa Apnaa.

"Shiv is a man of few words. He is arrogant and extremely reserved." Probably it was his character that unnerved his co-star. Being a workaholic Iqbal says that he isn't the kind who likes to throw his weight around. "I'm a simple guy yaar," he laughs. "Its because of my height and my voice that people get intimidated. But things will be easy after some time. Pallavi Subhash was unavailable for her comments.

By A.L. Chougule

With their reach restricted to cable and satellite homes in metros and big cities and watched by people with higher purchasing power, satellite channels' programming was and still is targeted at the affluent upper middle class, middle and lower middle class urban viewers. But now there is a subtle change happening in their programming content. With the number of cable and satellite homes increasing from 40 million two years ago to nearly 65 million now, satellite channels have started revisiting their programming so as to target viewers in middle-level cities and towns.

After capturing eyeballs in the Hindi heartland with Saath Phere, Kasamh Se and, to a certain extent, Jab Love Hua Zee's new show Banoo Main Tei Dulhan deals with the life of an illiterate girl from Benaras who has a fairytale wedding. As the story moves to Delhi after marriage Vidya realises that her dream of a happy and loving married life is shattered, thanks to her in-laws and husband who ill treat her because she is unlettered.

On the other hand, Star Plus's forthcoming show Karam Apna Apna is the story of Gauri who hails from a small hamlet of West Bengal. She is a simple and semi-educated girl without any ambition who puts the interest of her family before herself and dedicates her life to make her father and her sister happy. Her dream of marrying her fianc Shashank gets shattered when she is compelled to work as a servant in a rich household because of an old unpaid loan that her father owes to the owner of the haveli.

A year or two earlier, these subjects would not have even been given a thought, leave alone giving them prime time space. But market reality has changed considerably in the last three years and channels can ignore it at their own peril. The high level of competition and consumption saturation in metros and big cities has forced business houses, especially fast moving consumer goods manufacturers (they also happen to be the big advertisers on TV), to target consumers in smaller cities, towns and semi-urban areas where household incomes have shown impressive growth.

As television business in India is largely driven by ad revenue and less on subscription income, general entertainment pay channels have no option but to act in tandem with the changing economic reality.
Ashish Kaul, Zee's senior vice-president, corporate brand development, doesn't disagree with the broader changes in economic and business scenario. But he says Zee's primary focus has always been the Hindi heartland. "For us the metros and big cities are secondary unlike Star and Sony which take pride in being upmarket channels," he points out.

"The essence of our programming is determined by the elements and values of the heartland because in any case the upper middle class families don't watch these shows. The audience for serials primarily comes from C and D classes (middle, lower middle and labour classes) though majority of consumers for FMCG and durable goods come from B (upper middle class) and C classes. The D class watches TV because it aspires for economic mobility."

Shailja Kejriwal, senior creative director, Star India says the B class also watches general entertainment channel but she admits that the real eyeballs comes from C and D classes. However, in keeping with the changing market reality Shailja says Star Plus is also focusing on small cities and towns. "Having captured the lead position in metros we are increasing the weightage for viewers of smaller places in our programming.

While the primary viewer of a mass channel is always the housewife, the spread of programming mix must keep pace with economic reality. One can't ignore the urban market but one also can't ignore the emerging middle and small town markets as well," she elaborates. Nina Jaipuria, Sony's vice-president, marketing and communications, denies that Sony caters to only upmarket audience. "Our programming revolves around middle class families and values and our target audience has always been the aspirational viewer who identifies with heartland value system," she clarifies.

'Luck favours those who are brave'

Were they destined to be where they are, or did they chart their own success story? BT quizzes those in the showbiz

APARNA GUPTA Times News Network

At 16, an astrologer declared that she will be a mere housewife. Today, Smriti Irani is one of the best known faces on television. "I worked doubly hard to carve a niche for myself as I believe destiny is governed by our actions," reveals Smriti but she also believes that our relationships are pre-destined. "Though we can work our way up in the professional arena, only God can decide who will come into our lives. After my marriage, I felt that this aspect of my life was destined," adds Smriti.
Maninee De almost dismissed the prediction of a tarot card reader who once told her that she will meet her 'soulmate' within a few months. "Not just was I told that his initials will be MM but also minor details about his complexion and background," shares Maninee. By fate, she did meet Mihir Mishra and eventually tied the knot with him.
Actor Shilpa Saklani, feels blessed that God the Almighty chose this life for her, "I don't take any credit for whatever little success I have achieved but I work hard not to let God down. Though our life is pre-determined, good karma softens God." The way she met and fell in love with actor-husband Apoorva Agnihotri reinforced her faith. "I tried so hard to dodge him but the similarities between us were too uncanny, and now I feel we were meant to be a couple."
An actor who certainly feels that his actions determined his success is Aman Varma. "Nothing in life is pre-determined. Luck only favours those who are brave," says Varma who survived through many a controversy in his career. "It's what you put in that you get back. I see so many talented people around, but not many have the resilience to struggle it out in this industry."
The tussle between destiny and human endeavour continues to fascinate everyone. So, when Balaji Telefilms approached Star Plus with the script of
Karam Apnaa Apnaa (KAA), which highlights the unpredictability of destiny, the channel selected the serial for its prime 9.30 pm slot. "The story line of a young girl, Gauri, whose fate takes her on a path different from her dream plan is what most people can relate with. The concept was intriguing as instead of succumbing to the scenario she chooses to do something about it," states Shailaja Kejriwal, Senior Creative Director, Star India Pvt Ltd.
Call it coincidences of sorts but Pallavi Subhash (hailed as Ekta Kapoor's next blue–eyed girl) believes she was destined to play Gauri's role. "One day, just out of the blue, I got a call from Ekta's office asking me to come and sign the contract for the lead actor for KAA. Before that I didn't even know the location of Balaji office, forget auditioning for the role!"
Actor Iqbal Khan, who shares screen space with Pallavi in KAA, swears by the magic wand of destiny. "I started my career with two films, which now I think were destined to flop. I didn't get any work for almost a year, and not that I looked any different then. But suddenly one day, I got a call by Balaji Telefilms to play Angad's character, and God has been kind ever since," he says. To witness the dramatic twists of destiny watch Karam Apnaa Apnaa starting tonight, Monday-Thursday, at 9.30 pm on Star Plus.

I am quite like Gauri: Pallavi

Snippets

Going by the buzz and the systematic promotion being planned for the launch of Karam Apna Apna which replaces Kavyanjali on Star Plus from August 28, Gauri, the protagonist of the show played by Pallavi Subhash is being promoted as the new prime time face of Star Plus.

Whether Gauri will displace Tulsi and Parvati from the coveted pedestal and Pallavi will succeed in reaching the height of popularity that Smriti Irani and Sakshi Tanwar have enjoyed remains to be seen. But Pallavi considers herself extremely lucky for landing lead the role in the Balaji serial without even having stepped into Balaji House to leave her photographs there.

The Marathi stage actress who has done theatre with late Laxmikant Berde and Kedar Shinde for the last four years besides a host of ad campaigns and Marathi serials for Zee Marathi and ETV Marathi was quite content with her work in regional language shows. The turning point came when she made an entry in Tumhari Disha on Zee a month ago.

"Ekta saw me in one scene and decided to cast me as Gauri in Karam Apna Apna. I gave an audition and things took off from there," says the young actress who's very ecited about doing a lead role in a Balaji show. "It's not only a challenge but a big responsibility to live up to everyone's expectations because it is a big show."

But she doesn't have to worry much. Ekta, the serial's creative team and director Anil V. Kumar are helping her to understand and play the character. "Anil is very helpful and I am following his instructions till the last word," confesses Pallavi.

Karam Apna Apna is the story of Gauri who hails from a small hamlet of West Bengal. She is a simple girl without any ambition who has put the interest of her family before herself. Gauri is is all set to get married to her fianc Shashank.

But destiny has something different in store for her. "I can easily identify with character because in many ways

A look at Karam Apnaa Apnaa

After the much publicised promos, Balaji's most awaited baby Karam Apna Apna, is all set to be delivered. This prime time show, which is slotted for Star Plus, will be telecast from 29 August at 9.30 pm.

Karam... boasts not only of a strong and well sketched story line, but also an interesting line up of seasoned actors of television juxtaposed with fresh talent. The cast comprises of Apara Mehta, Roopa Ganguly, Salil Ankola, Iqbal Khan, Geetanjli Tikekar, Sumeet Sachdev, real life couple Rajev and Delnaaz Paul, Achint Kaur, Jaya Bhattacharya, Karan Patel and new face, Pallavi Subhash who plays the protagonist.

The story revolves around a middle class, non-ambitious Kolkatta girl, Gauri. It's about the trials and tribulations faced by her when she comes in contact with three families, the Chatterjee's - her paternal home, the Kapoor's - her future in-laws and the Tandon's - friend of the Kapoor's.

Keeping up with the trend of introducing new faces, Balaji introduces the young and talented actor Pallavi Subhash, (earlier seen as Preeto's sister in Zee TV's Tumhari Disha). She is been touted as the next big thing and is most likely to attain the iconic status gained by her forerunners. Pallavi states, "It's too early to be even compared with Tulsi, Parvati… I have just taken my baby steps and there is a long way to go, lots more to learn from them. The best aspect of this serial is that I get to play a character which is very much like me. Like Gauri, I too am a simple girl who wears simple attires. The only difference between us is that she has no ambitions, while I do have some small dreams and I look forward to achieve them."

Post the death of her character, Savita Virani in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Apara Mehta will stage her comeback with Balaji Telefilms in Karam..."It's more like homecoming for me. I share an excellent relation with Ekta Kapoor, in fact she welcomed me with open arms. Since it's a new show I have kept aside all my other projects. From my past experience of ten years in this field, I have realized that launching a new serial is like giving birth to a child. It requires patience and focus to make it a success," says Apara. She continues "In this serial I play a very vibrant and loud character, Krishna Kapoor who is lovingly called dadi. Her USP is that she bitches and bad mouthes about anyone on their face, while behind their backs she will be all praises about them. In fact my onscreen husband (played by Amarnath Kapoor) often mentions that my behaviour is very weird. People generally do the vice-versa, while I am the just opposite."

For cricketer turned actor Salil Ankola it's a maiden experience with Balaji Telefilms. Also the fact that he will be portraying a father seems to be interesting. He says, "I play Mahen Kapoor, the eldest son of the family, who is very self centered. His sole aim is to earn fame, for which he can go to any length and use anyone as pawn. He does not value any relationship; fame, money and position is all that matters to him, " He continues, "It 's a challenge to potray an elderly role.TV is a medium where the audience relates with the character and not the actor. So when I play this character, people will be associating me with Mahen and not Salil. It's like this, 'Television makes characters whereas films make stars'. So if such a role was offered to me for a film, I would have rejected it."

Geetanjali Tikekar aka Apoorna of Kasauti...., who went on to kill her own husband, will once again enact a bitchy and selfish character, Maya in Karam..... But for a change she will have shades of grey and will not be outright vampish. "Maya is very flamboyant and self centred. In addition to this she is the only girl of the Kapoor family, hence is pampered which is evident from her snobbish behaviour. Inspite of her uptight behaviour, nobody hates her. There is some funny element to this personality - her perpetual smile and sarcastic sense of humour, " states the beautiful Geetanjali.

Rajev Paul's association with Balaji goes quite long back. He says, "I gained recoginiton with a negative character in Balaji's Kahanii...... However in Karam....I play a positive role who loves his family and wife dearly. This is the first time where I will be working with my wife Delnaaz for a same serial. So it's going to be all the more interesting." Coming to the ever lively and vibrant Delnaaz, it's been like a dream come true for her for three reasons. She discloses, "a) this is the first daily soap of my career, b) for the first time I will be working, and also be paired opposite my hubby Rajev and c) I get the opportunity to work with one of the best production house of the television industry, Balaji Telefilms."

Owing forever allegiance to the Balaji camp is Sumeet Sachdev (Gautam of Kyunki....) who will essay the character of Sashank, an accountant with Mahen Kapoor (Salil Ankola). Mahen offers Sashank to get married to Gauri (Pallavi). "Though I have been getting offers from other production houses, I choose to work only with Balaji. With Karam....I got the chance to visit Kolkatta and understand the Bengali culture," says the elated Sumeet.

Actor Karan Patel's entire career graph is based on Balaji. "This is my seventh serial with them. I play a very intense character, Vivan Kapoor. He is close only to his mother (Jaya Bhattacharya) and sister. He hates his father (Vinay Jain) and agrees to join the family business just for the sake of his mother. Vivaan doesn't like any third person interfering between him and his mother," discloses Karan.

Besides Pallavi, a few other fresh faces too will be launced with Karam....Rahul Jagtiani (runner up of Gladrags model hunt) is zeroed in to play son to Salil Ankola. Similarly Shriya Bisht (a newcomer from the corporate world) and Karan Kapoor (who has some films to his credit) will play daughter and son of Roopa Ganguly respectively.

Phew...quite an interesting plot and star cast! Karam...seems quite promising and with a daily dose of added masala to it, this show will definitely rank among the topnotchers from the Balaji camp.

Mona accuses Balaji of breach of contract

Ambegaonkar says it was a matter of principles, and not money, that forced her to quit their new show Karam Apna Apna

matter of principle: Mona Ambegaonkar

Upala KBR
upala@mid-day.com

On August 12, HiTLIST reported that actress Mona Ambegaonkar had been approached by Balaji Telefilms for a new show, Karam Apna Apna. Later, there were reports that she had been chucked out for quoting an astronomical amount of money.
Mona, who is a single mother, is extremely guarded when it comes to talking about her personal life. In February, she delivered a baby girl but has refused to disclose the father's name. Now, Mona is slighted by these rumours and wants to set the record straight on her problems with Balaji.

How I was approached
On August 5, Shalu (a production assistant) from Balaji called to ask if I had dates from August 20 for a new project. They wanted 20 days a month from me. I said that I would give 30 days if they wanted, but I would work only eight hours. She said she would get back on that. Money was never the issue.

Confidentiality clause
I had a confidentiality clause that I wanted in my contract. The clause stated that there is to be no usage of my personal life or my family to promote the show. It was a clause to protect my personal life, my family and me. They agreed.

Contract was signed
On August 8, I went to the legal department in Balaji and inserted the confidentiality clause. They made me formulate that clause and it clearly states that 'you will not use my personal life to promote the programme, in order to protect my interests.' Everything else was perfect.

Life is blissful
Audition ho gaya. I was so excited. I started preparations. I was told my flight to Kolkata (the show is being shot there) leaves for August 13 at 10 pm. On August 12, my CA and legal advisor called me late in the evening and told me about the MiD DAY article. (Mona was upset with the show's creative head Doris De's quote, "We adjust with lots of artistes for ads, serials and shows, so why shouldn't we accommodate Mona, who has a small baby to look after?" and Ekta Kapoor's quote, "She has a small baby and naturally she would want time with her.") He read it out and I went cold. I said, 'Yaar, it's a breach of contract.'

Make Balaji aware
My CA said, 'You must make them aware of it or what's the purpose of putting it in the contract?' He knows I can be bull-headed about the things that I believe in, but I don't apologise for it. If I am not that, then I am nothing.

Being obsessive
Yes I'm being obsessive, but it's important to me. It will continue being important to me until the time I'm prepared to talk about it. But I will do it on my own terms, with the grace and dignity I think it deserves. I am very clear in my head about that.

I am not unprofessional
When I spoke to Doris, she said that she meant it only in my interest. I told her she had breached my interests. Are they trying to milk me for publicity? That's precisely what my clause in the contract does not allow.

No knowledge
Then Tanushree came on the line. She said that she's Ekta's associate and is authorised to speak on her behalf. She then said they didn't know about the confidentiality clause. I said, 'If you don't know that as a corporate entity, then that is the biggest flaw in your organisation. You don't know about the terms of the contract of the person you are going to work with the next day?' Would Ekta have let me go free if I had breached her contract? No. It was 11.30 pm, and I was exhausted and weeping. I was not taking the flight the next day. I told Shalu, 'You have to respect me and respect the trust that I have placed in you. If you don't do that, I can't work with you.'

Meeting with Shobha
On Monday (August 14), I met Shobhaji and explained the situation to her. She understood but said, 'Jo kuch bhi bola gaya, fact hai'. I don't deny that, but woh fact mera hai! I will introduce it to the world when I am ready to. I told Shobhaji that I won't be able to do the show.

Back to square one
Eventually, we managed to sort things out and I was once again scheduled to leave on August 15 for Kolkata on the evening flight. At 8 am, Shalu called and told me that I now had to leave by the 4.30 pm flight. We were back to square one. It was impossible as I had many things to arrange. So in all humility, I say no. I knew they had a replacement ready (Achint). I didn't feel bad about stepping out at the last moment because I was cast at the last moment.

Financial constraints?
Paisa aata hai, paisa jaata hai. I've been working since I was 14. Work is my narcotic. I go for rehearsals when people go for parties. I can have a fight over my principles, but never over money.

Pallavi Subhash

'I don't have a problem doing bedroom scenes'

DEEPALI DHINGRA

The latest entrant to the Ekta Kapoor camp might look like a young, innocent girl — which she is — but beneath that innocence, lies a mature, confident interior. Say hello to Pallavi Subhash, who will soon be seen in Star Plus' Karam Apnaa Apnaa. This girl sets her own parameters and knows where to draw the line when it comes to that.
Pallavi isn't new to the camera. In fact, she's a popular Marathi actor. "I've acted in a number of Marathi films, commercials and have done theatre too," she informs. So what is she doing in the big bad world of Hindi soaps? "Well, I had acted in the serial Tumhari Disha and got noticed by Ektaji. I had left some pictures at their production house and they called me to play the lead role of Gauri in Karam Apnaa Apnaa. Pallavi says that she identifies completely with the character of Gauri. "She's a really simple middle class girl from Kolkata who loves her family. The entire look — cotton kurtas, flat chappals, open straight hair — it's totally me!" she adds. Pallavi shares a good chemistry with Sumit Sachdev, her co-actor in the serial. "I didn't know how we would get along but now, I'm really comfortable with him," she says.
But how comfortable is she enacting bedroom scenes, since that's where television seems to be heading now? "I don't have a problem doing bedroom scenes, but it depends on the situation and the character," says Pallavi. The actor adds that even during these scenes, there are certain movements and dialogues to pay attention to, so the actors pay attention to only that aspect. "As an actor, it's my duty to do what is expected from me," she adds.
So is Bollywood the next step? "At the moment, my full focus is on television. But if I'm offered a good role in a film, then I would love to do it. Even if that means doing three scenes in good film, I wouldn't hesitate," says this spunky girl. Looks like she has her head firmly on her shoulders!

Shhhh…..!

no kidding: Mona Ambegaonkar

After HiTLIST carried a story on Mona Ambegaonkar being part of Balaji's Karam Apna Apna, the actress walked out of the show. But we needn't worry, as Achint Kaur has replaced her now. Mona was slated to play Nikhila, the powerful and wealthy matriarch of a business family.
Says a source in Balaji, "Mona was upset that Balaji had referred to her baby in the story. She doesn't want anybody to talk about the fact that she has a child or her personal life. After keeping the Balaji unit of 175 people waiting in Kolkata for three days, she finally decided that she wouldn't do the serial."
As they say, one woman's loss is another one's gain.

Yeah right! Achint Kaur

Amit Dua opts out of Karam Apna Apna

Amit Dua aka Sameer of Star's Kyunki who was supposed to play second lead in Kasturi now tltled as Karam apna apna has opted out of the show.

"Though it's a difficult decision, I've decided to opt out of the show."

Karam apna apna would have actually been this Delhite's big break in tellydom. But owing to certain last minute changes in his character Amit decided not to go ahead with it.

"Initially, I was very excited about this show as it offered me a very well defined character. I was to play Ayush, the youngest son of the main family in the show. He is the family's brat and also has shades of grey. The contract that I had signed with Balaji two months back too had stated this very clearly. But now the creative team has informed me that I would no longer play Ayush; instead they want me to play another character called Sumit," says a much depressed Amit.

He further continues, "I found the character of Sumit to have no substantial significance in the serial. After a point of time, this character goes a bit off track and a little haywire. So, though it's a difficult decision, I've decided to opt out of the show.".

Recently, Amit has also entered the track of Kasauti... as the cousin brother of Anurag Basu. Amit was also approached for playing a significant part in Sab TV's Left Right Left and Zee TV's Mamta, but rejected them stating that he is here to work only with Balaji. Meanwhile, the role of Ayush has been bagged by Karan Patel (Kasamh se's Rohit Chopra).
