Rumour is Apara Mehta has been offered a role in Saat Phere again but the actress is a bit nervous about the controversy that may erupt if she accepts two shows from two different production houses. In an interview with Sneha Hazarika she explains her stand

Q We hear you are coming back as Kaakisa in Saat Phere?
How did you get to know even before me? Frankly, I don't want to get into any controversy about doing two shows from different production houses at the same time. But if things get sorted out then surely I will be seen in Saat Phere.

Q Why has your role in Karam Apna Apna suddenly been cut? Is the show being wound up or will it be aired at another time now because of KBC?
There is no chance of the show going off air. Another time? Maybe. Lately, my role too has been cut short because the story is progressing on a different angle. When I get back to the family, there will be more conflicts and I will be featured more prominently.

QComing back to Saat Phere, why did you quit in the first place?
Initially my character was scheduled for a short time only but it continued for much longer as the character became popular. In fact the creative team of Saat Phere thought of bringing me back. To do two shows on the same time slot is tough — it requires a lot of time. It is hard to manage.

QWho would you give credit to for the success of Saat Phere?
Rajshree. She is doing a great job. Ashlesha and Akshay are the other names. And of course, writer Purnendu Shekhar who has made the story interesting. Writers have written well by keeping all characters in mind. The directors Vijay Pandey and Nandita Mehra deserve to be crowned. It is very tough to keep the interest value going in daily soaps. They've done a good job.

QDon't you think sudden changes made by channels affect writers, producers and artists?
After doing more than 1000 episodes of both Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, I have seen different phases of the TV industry. Now the channel people want television to be like films. Karam Apna Apna was shot in Kolkata, Solhah Shringaar in Banaras and Saat Phere in Rajasthan. Moreover, the night sequences are more of late. So I think sudden changes are obvious from the channel's side.

Karam Apna Apna: Testing Times

"Karam Apna Apna" is the latest serial to follow its predecessors with replacements. Iqbal Khan, the hottest hunk on television decided to leave Balaji telefilms and "Karam Apna Apna" in which he plays the lead. Yash Tonk has stepped into his shoes and has shouldered the responsibility, though the audience could not accept him in place of their favourite hero. Iqbal mania is far more than expected. Audiences are hoping against hope that their much-loved star would be back in action.

Yash Tonk has gone deep into the character of Shiv Kapoor to the extent even taking on the informal yet macho look of Iqbal Khan with the stubble and the earring. Yet he cannot however reflect the charisma and the electrifying screen presence of Iqbal Khan. The fan following for the star is immensely large and now with the news of his marriage to Sneha Chhabra in January 2007, the ardent fans are left hopeless.

The serial is passing through a major dramatic turn of events as much action unfurls with the passing of each day. The love triangle with Gauri-Shiv-Ipshita has much suspense to offer. Gauri is madly in love with Shiv unaware of him cheating on her. Her blind faith and deep-rooted love has left Shiv uneasy, whose conscience pricks him leaving unsettled. Ipshita in love with Shiv cannot stay away from him augmenting his troubles. Gauri's father Alok has acknowledged his daughter but cannot completely accept Shiv for the miseries that Gauri had to and has to endure.

The story revolves around the central characters yet other characters like Kaya, Vivan and others do feature in them. Kaya's marriage proposal and the plot behind it has led to problems unfurling in Shiv's life. The current episodes feature Shiv charged with the rape of a girl, his arrest and the court case which ensues. Gauri the loving and devoted wife runs helter skeltor for rescuing him, but the witness turns hostile. Adding spice to the episode Ipshita lands in the court requesting the judge to pay heed to her plea, leaving the audience in a trance.

Ekta Kapoor's "Karam Apna Apna" is another daily soap with a difference with the K-tag attached to it. Replacements have occurred many times in Ekta's serials like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi where Mihir Virani was portrayed by three people. What needs to be borne in mind is that sometimes the replacements click while occassionally it can fail as well. "Karam Apna Apna" has to pass the acid test so also Yash Tonk who has to make it to the hearts of the audience.

Ekta Kapoor's Heroes

Mihir Virani, Anuraag Basu, Sujal Garewal, Shiv Kapoor, Jai Walia, Pradham Mithal, Kavya, Mr. Bajaj, Karan Virani so goes the roll of those who made their way to our homes with their endearing ways and charming guise. Ekta Kapoor's heroes as they are popularly branded have marketed images, which have gone on to become icons. Each character typifies a particular trait and echoes certain ideals despite many shortcomings. The serials with the time leaps have advanced over a period of time, so also the characters growing with every passing age with the audience tracing their trajectory of growth.

Ekta's men, her devoted army of talented heroes has always worked hard enough to catapult the serials to the top slot with the TRPs soaring high. Ronit Roy, Cezanne Khan, Rajeev Khandelwal, Iqbal Khan, Ram Kapoor, Hiten Tejwani, Ejaz Khan and others like Shabbir Ahluwalia, Akashdeep Saigal, Yash Tonk, Manoj Bohra, etc, are some of the most sought after celebrities on the small screen. Glamorous looks, muscular bodies, stylish clothes, chocolate hero or macho image completes it all. The popularity and star status they enjoy is immense as evident from the much talked about issue of the onscreen death of the character Mihir Virani, later brought back to life on popular demand! The actors have immortalized certain characters, which have taken on a life-like stature.

In spite of this one cannot ignore that monotony does creep in at times and replacements leave distaste when an actor leaves a show and someone else steps into the role. The umpteen repetitions of roles, rehashed plot structure, untimely generation leaps when young actors look double their age and play father to actors who are either of their age or older to them. Time leaps are bound to bring problems along with them when actors do not concede to playing older roles, leave the show abruptly. This is made up for with an instant replacement or the untimely death of a character.

Nevertheless Balaji Telefilms 'K' soaps' heroes are the most sought after stars on television. Ronit Roy is the most paid actor on television and Hiten Tejwani is one dependable actor who easily brings up the TRP ratings of any serial with his charismatic screen presence. He juggles in and out of every role with ease. Shabbir Ahluwalia, Akashdeep Saigal, Ejaaz Khan, Iqbal Khan are the hot actors of the television, in fact the sexy stars. Rajeev Khandewal's exit from "Kahiin To Hoga" and Iqbal Khan's from "Karam Apna Apna" has left the audience disappointed, wherein even the replacements Gurpreet Singh and Yash Tonk have not been able to recreate the magic. In fact there are even plans of winding up the serial "Kahiin To Hoga" on a good note before the audience goes completely upset.

In the history of Indian television many serials and their characters have received much recognition, but never before has the small screen amassed such popularity to even masking its counterpart, the big screen and projecting its heroes, who are nothing less than a matinee idol.

Yash Tonk, who recently replaced Iqbal Khan in Karam Apna Apna says the name Gauri has a special meaning in his life. Coincidentally, his off-screen and on-screen wives' names happen to be the same (Pallavi Subhash's name is Gauri in Karam and his wife is Gouri Tonk). Added to this is the fact that his best friend's wife is also called Gauri. "Yes there are three Gauris in my life. My on-screen and off- screen wives and also my best friend Hiten Tejwani's wife, all are called Gauri. I feel the name Gauri is lucky for me," says Yash.

Names have played a very vital role in his life. "One of my serials on Sab TV was Karam, there was another Karm on Doordarshan and again now on Star Plus, I have Karam Apna Apna. Another common thing here is the K, which obviously belongs to the Balaji camp. I think even the name Karam is lucky for me," adds Yash.

His wife Gouri admits she has been receiving many congratulatory calls over this and her superstitious side is convinced that this is a good omen for her husband's career. She hopes that the chemistry between Yash and Gauri remains only in his real life! (Sampurn)

Stress and lack of time are things of the past as Iqbal Khan is a relaxed man these days. The actor who quit Karam Apna Apna says he is very happy now as he can spend quality time with his wife and family. "I am busy spending time with my family because I was living by myself for the longest time. It's been more than a year since I spent time with them," he says. Iqbal does have a lot of catching up to do because his entire family from Kashmir and Australia came down to Mumbai to attend his wedding, which took place on January 16. In order to let him enjoy his time, his relatives even took up the responsibility for all the wedding arrangements and took care of the shopping too. With the wedding over, now the big thing to look forward to is his honeymoon, but he doesn't tell us where he is going due to his superstitions.

Although life is a well-deserved holiday at the moment for the actor, his career isn't being ignored. Though he refuses to talk about the alleged offer from Sony he does say, "Yes I am getting many offers but I am not taking them up till all my wedding related plans are over." He is so caught up in marital bliss that he hasn't even had the time to watch his former serial Karam Apna Apna, because when asked what he feels about Yash Tonk replacing him, he says, "Actually I have not seen him onscreen, but I have seen his acting. I am sure he will do full justice to this role." But once back from the honeymoon work will not be taken lightly anymore as he will then start seriously considering his offers.

'It's high time I get back to work'

Honeymoon over, Iqbal Khan is ready to work again...

Back after his brisk honeymoon, Iqbal Khan is ready to face the arc lights again. His was one the most low profile weddings that took place two weeks ago, in Mumbai. Incidentally, the actor didn't invite anyone from the industry and he has no regrets for the same. He says, "I don't like to bring my personal life in public. Even Sneha is not fond of shor-sharaba and I think we like it that way."

Iqbal Khan

Immediately after marriage Iqbal and Sneha went to Maldives for their honeymoon. The actor enjoyed every moment of it. "Maldives is a very romantic place and we enjoyed to the hilt," he says.

The actor has not been following any television soap, since the time he left Balaji's Karam Apna Apna. "I don't sit and watch television on a regular basis, but I have been told that Yash (Tonk) is doing a fantastic job," he says. The actor is now seriously looking for good offers. "It's high time I get back to work. I need to buy a house. I have started meeting people and will soon be in a position to make an announcement," he says.

The actor doesn't want to try his hand in films. "My debut film Funtoosh was not a pleasant experience as far as the box-office results were concerned. I think television has given me the recognition as an actor and I shall never quit TV for films," he says.

So, will he be meeting Ekta Kapoor again? "I never had any problem with Ekta. I didn't quit Balaji on a bad note. So, I am sure that the day I want to work with Ekta, she will sign me," he argues.

The actor was recently featured in Zee TV's Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai, but he feels that it was too early. "It's just beginning of my career and I have a way to go as a performer. But meeting old pals and my school teacher after ages was great fun," he says.

Hiten Tejwani, the actor who makes an entry into every Balaji serial is now in the news for replacing Cezzane Khan in Kasauti… He talks about taking on a popular role, his relationship with Ekta Kapoor, favourite soap and more to

Q You are Ekta's blue-eyed boy!
I really don't know. Ekta is the best person to answer this question. Acting is my passion and I love my work. I work very hard and Ekta knows it. Sincerity and hard work never go unnoticed. In the last six years many actors have come and gone. Some didn't even last for more than six months. But I have lasted for six years and grown in stature. People know me as Hiten Tejwani and this is a big achievement.

Q How come you feature practically in every Balaji show?
It's Ekta's call. She knows my capabilities and where I fit into her scheme of things. If she has a role for me she asks me to do it and I don't say no to her because I respect and accept her decisions. When things are working out very well for me and Ekta why should I say no to her? She gives me good roles, which help me grow as an actor.

Q It's okay with you even if she asks you to replace someone?
I don't have any problem with that. In Kesar I replaced Ejaz Khan and it worked well for me. In Koi Dil Mein Hai I had replaced another actor and I didn't regret it. Now I am replacing Cezanne in Kasauti. Ekta has played a great role in shaping my career. I will always stand by her because the relationship has worked very well for both of us.

Q Is it difficult to replace a popular actor?
I don't find it difficult at all and I don't feel the pressure either. People relate to the character more than the actor. The character remains the same but the actor changes. There is no demand to play the character like the actor you have replaced. I do it in my own style.

Q Of all your shows which is your favourite ?
Kutumb is my all time favourite. But I have enjoyed every role that I have done because I love my work. However, Karan in Kyunki… is my best role to date because it has had all the possible emotions and shades attached to it. It's a wholesome character.

Q How is your role in Karam… shaping up?
It is shaping up very well. In Karam… where I play Anupam Bhattacharya is a love story revolving around Shiv-Gauri and Anupam-Ipshita. Gauri's love for Shiv is unconditional and Anupam marries Ipshita. But the twist comes when Gauri will learn that Shiv loves Ipshita.

Q You must be getting offers from other production houses. Why don't you work outside Balaji?
There is no need for me to work for any other producer apart from Balaji. I have been offered lots of roles but when I tell producers I can't give them even 15 days in a month they back out. I work all 30 days in Balaji. So where is the time to do other producers' serials? My first priority is Balaji.

Q Don't you find it difficult to do three dailies?
Initially it is tough and requires lot of extra hard work. But when things settle down the pressure goes. Also when you are doing three shows for one-production house things get adjusted easily.

The two Ks in Yash's life!

Yash Tonk has been keeping a low profile post Nach Baliye 2. The actor along with wife Gauri were considered as hot favourites on the show, but eventually had to settle for the second best place. They lost to Hussain Tina-Jodi by a close margin.

Looks like destiny had other plans for him. Yash was offered Karaam Apnaa Apnaa soon after NB 2, to fill the void in his life. Adds Yash, "You won't believe how hectic life has been for me. After the NB 2 gruelling practice sessions, Gauri and me wanted to take off on a holiday; but with Karam life took a different turn. Now, it's my new work that keeps me occupied most of the time."

Iqbal Khan, who played the suave Shiv in Karam decided to call it quits and after many names doing the rounds, it was Yash Tonk who finally bagged the coveted role. When asked about how it was stepping into somebody else's role midway, Yash says, "I would say, it's not a very easy thing to do. It took me a week to put the act together. Now, I would say I blend completely into my character and it is pulsating with my identity."

Yash is also been seen in Star's afternoon soap Kesar, wherein he plays the influential NRI Harman Khanna. Adds Yash, "I don't have a major track in Kesar these days, so it only takes 5 days of my time. What really keeps me busy these days is Karam's schedule. It's like working round the clock"

Ask about his future projects, the actor quips, "Ha…ha, I hardly have any time to think on those lines. I believe in committing to new work only when I can focus on it fully. Right now, it's only the two Ks that I am busy with."

So, it might be some more time before Yash's sabbatical plans take off. Till then, he continues to face the arclights, which we're sure he enjoys to the hilt.

Karam Apna celebrates 100th episode

Karam Apna Apna completed their 100 episodes and celebrated at Kamath Club. Gauri (Pallavi Shubhash) sent an SMS to each member of the serial's cast and crew.

Gauri's SMS read:
Hi guys.. Congratulations..
V r celebrating our 100 episodes at fm:)
v r just cutting a cake nearby 5pm..
Really love if u could join us..
Gauri..Pallavi..

We asked Pallavi what had changed in her life after becoming a star.
"It's great that in such a short time our serial has become so popular. It is totally the result of our team work. Now that we've been around for 100 episodes, our viewers will expect much more from us and our responsibility to delivering them entertainment has also increased. I wish we'll complete 500 then 1000 and then 5000 episodes!" said an excited Pallavi.

Pallavi did Marathi theatre, movies and serials before coming into Tellywood. "Ekta saw me in Tumhari Disha and I was really excited when Balaji's creative head Madhura called me to say that they were looking for the lead on Karam. 'Though lots of tapes of auditions had
come in from Pakistan as well as from Delhi, we are not getting the right girl,' Madhura told me.
So I went, got the job and signed a three-year contract."

Apparently a one-minute emotional scene in Tumhari Disha turned the game for Pallavi, "Ekta immediately said: 'this is my Gauri!'"

Having worked with the big guns of TV now for six months, Pallavi says she has matured and learnt how to get along with different kinds of people and also how to handle people in their various moods.

She is also now the proud owner of a car. "With my first salary I bought a purple Santro. "Before this, she used to travel by bus, auto and train.

Pallavi's family has a vague connection to entertainment: her father was a producer on Doordarshan, though her mother and her sister are both housewives.

Rupa joins Ekta camp

The actress has joined Balaji's daily soap Karam Apna Apna…

Rupa Ganguly, who is still remembered for her role as Draupadi in Mahabharata, is back as Suguna in Karam Apna Apna. Rupa is excited about her comeback. She says, "It feels nice to be back on national television. I am playing Suguna, Ipshita's mother, in the serial. It is one of the significant characters, who will bring in the much-required twist in the tale. I had been getting calls and mails from Balaji over the last four years, with offers. This time, their offer had been lucrative enough… The schedule will give me a scope to divide my time between my hometown Kolkata and Mumbai."

But, why Balaji? "Frankly, I did not get many calls from other production houses. I found the Balaji people professional enough to work with. Besides, I liked my role in the show."

Reportedly, Karam... is not getting good TRPs. To this she says, "Being an artiste, I only care for my character and nothing else. I am not bothered about TRPs."

So, what kept her away from national television for such a long period? Rupa says, "Actually my son Aakash was very young and I could not leave him alone. Now that he has grown up and we have admitted him to a boarding school, I have ample time to devote to my creative pursuits."

How does she like living in Mumbai? "I have stayed in Mumbai for an extensive period of time when I was doing Mahabharata. Although I have a flat at Lokhandwala, I prefer to stay in Kolkata, closer to my family and friends."

Now that Rupa is in Mumbai for some time, will it affect her film assignments in Kolkata? Rupa says, "After Ritupo*no Ghosh's Antarmahal, I did a few other Bengali movies. I had been a little busy with my family too. I know, Mahabharata gave me recognition; but I wanted to explore many other things as an artiste and therefore left Mumbai."

What about Anurag Basu's new show, Love Story? Says Rupa, "I have already started shooting for the serial. It has two parallel love tracks with an intriguing storyline. It'll be aired soon after the cricket World Cup is over. Right now, I want to concentrate on these two shows and I don't think I have enough time for any other project. As for my film assignments are concerned, I will always take time out for directors like Rituparno Ghosh and Gautam Ghosh."
